- Conjoined twins Abby and Brittany Hensel are about to turn 16. That means they're very busy with schoolwork, sports, social activities and, yes, testing for their driver's license. To many of us, this may seem extraordinary, but Abby & Brittany have been doing extraordinary things all their lives.
They ride bikes and motorcycles. They play piano, volleyball, basketball, softball and swim - basically, anything many other people their age do. These attractive, smart, funny, outgoing sisters have been blessed to live in a wonderful family and their small rural community treats them like anyone else.
While most conjoined twins are separated shortly after birth, that was never a viable option for them. With one set of legs and one set of arms and several shared internal organs, their lives were destined to be lived together. Their story will amaze, inspire and give new meaning to what viewers think is possible for conjoined twins.

I couldn't help admiring them as I watched the video. Being so different from others, yet accepting what they cannot change and making the most of themselves is something that is amazing.

They do double face palm for each other better than most people.The put both hands on Brittney's face when she messed up, then they put both hands on Abby's face when she messed up. That was hilarious 😂.

@@NeovanGothTheir nervous systems are also conjoined. So my best guess is that each of them can both control the entire body, just like we do. So the face palm is just one person doing it, because the other person is "relaxing". If both try to control at the same time, probably the one that is more neurologically dominant of that body part gets control.
But they probably figure out how to coordinate with one another, so they don't try to control the same body part at the same time.
Even more complicated is if their spinal cords are also conjoined, as that's part of the central nervous system. But I don't know if that's the case.
No, they cannot control the entire body, like they said multiple times throughout the video, one girl controls the left side meaning left arm & leg and the other the right side. They don't feel what the other feels, meaning the left one cannot feel the right side (hand, arm, leg, torso etcetera). That indicates that they coordinate everything, but I think they first learned through conscious effort and then throughout time, effort and repetition it progressed on a sub-conscious level where they don't have to actively think about every movement and its coordination. I think muscle memory plays a role and perhaps there is also some form of connection between their nervous system that allows them to instinctively "feel"/anticipate what the other wants/needs from moment to moment, which is why they can react spontaneously in an effortless motion like facepalming and what not.
Edit:
As a side note, we had to actively and consciously learn movement, coordination etcetera, but through repetition and muscle memory we can do it without thinking about i. When you walk you don't actively think about putting first your right foot in front of the other and then the left and so on, no you learned to do it effortlessly without thinking, which is muscle memory. There is in my view something very similar going on with them, otherwise how could they do everything so effortlessly even though one only control and has feelings over her side of the body and not the other, but still, they manage every movement and coordination. Really?? I think she's the most selfish and cruel mother ever--to not only have not terminated the pregnancy, but to also have refused them separation surgery. Can't think of anything much worse she could've done to them.

They appear so happy and with lovely personalities, unlike someone who would make a comment like yours lol. Also, separation was never in the cards for them. You would rather they not be alive than be together? I guarantee they have brought lots of light, love, and joy into the world to people who know them, based on this special alone. They're friendly girls who really were lucky to have a beautiful and supportive family.

I love Abby and Brit. I grew up watching them in TLC. And I loved watching them grow.

These girls are not only 1 in many million to survive but they were also lucky enough to be born to an upper-middle class family with deep roots in a small town. Anything different and I am doubtful they would have thrived as well as they did.

Absolutely agree. Also, their parents being somewhat educated, a well rooted part in their community and a deep spiritual relationship. As you said, them having great support system has helped them immensely. But they dont go to alot of drs and specialists. They don't have tons of testing
I’m so grateful to the girls and their family for letting us get to know them a little. I am fascinated that two human beings can be so close to being one, while still being two. For me they raise very deep questions about the nature of ALL of our lives here on earth. I found the statements very intriguing by their beautiful mother and their doctor about their whole lives being cooperating with each other, because they have to. The rest of us struggle endlessly with this! These are some of the reasons they fascinate me and that I respect and admire them deeply. There’s such deep mystery about their story.

Seeing Abby and Brittney has really opened my eyes. I am indebted to them. They are so healthy minded and lively and life affirming. So individual as well and so brilliant at living together in one body. They didn’t have a choice but they really knocked it out of the park.

@@pnut3844able I guess you don’t understand the idiomatic use of the term. It can mean being uniquely grateful for something which I am since from watching Abby and Britney I have learned something about life that I don’t think I personally would have learned by any other means.
It makes me happy to see them working together in harmony and just ignoring all the people who don’t understand. Abbey, Brittney, and family don’t owe the world anything. They were born different, but are determined to not be discouraged by it.
I feel the one with the head that bends slight is at more disadvantage as her head isn't straight and she gets yanked around abit by the more willfull amd determined twin.

DUDE THIS IS SO TRUE! I wasn’t shocked at all to learn when only one twin got married it was Abby. It’s so unfair to Brittany. Either she didn’t like the guy and is letting Abby be with him at the expense of her own comfort OR Abby is being dominant AS ALWAYS and refuses to share the title of wife with Brittany or share the affections of their husband with her. Because let’s not delude ourselves they share a body. They are sharing a husband. Period. Yet only one gets to say she’s married and only one of them wears a ring and that’s Abby. The situation doesn’t sit right with me and I’m reminded of the conjoined twins on American Horror Story that had that kinda dynamic. I know Abby chose their job and major. Brittany NEVER wanted to be a math teacher. It’s always what Abby wants. I know people will say “you don’t know them!” Fair. I don’t. But I have watched every bit of media they’ve ever been in and I know enough about them to have an opinion. I may be wrong. But I don’t know how I could be.
Plus Abby gets married.
Yeah she gets dragged around like a rag doll figuratively and literally.
These girls live such a normal life because they have an amazing family and friend group who are ride or die for the twins. They were raised right, by good people . I wish nothing but continued health, success and happiness for abby and britney
They live(d) just the next town over from me and I never knew it until I saw them walking out of Target one day. I did a doubletake because I didn't realize they lived so close. I love how humble and down to earth their mother is.

I've followed the story of Abbie and Brittany since we were told about them and I love the way they take life by the horns and the common sense and love of the whole family. They will have decisions to make as they get older, maybe marriage and or children . I wish them whichever way their lives take all the best in the world.

I think one of the most amazing parts of this, is that these are two different people, who have figured out how to live together as one, often, I'm sure, through compromise. They've managed to do something that humanity has yet to figure out itself.
There is a lot we could learn from these girls.
joyful to watch. how selfassured they grew up,, how much love theiy can give, and how much love they receive. how embedded and integrated they are in their community. its normal. a different kind of normal, but just normal. and magic !! so many questions, but Brittany and Abbey just answer them one at a time. this is elevating on so many levels. peaceful coexistence being just one of them.

I’ve watched them for a while growing up and it’s seems that one of them is more spirited than the other. Sometimes she looks like she’s a little unhappy at times. It’s got to be daunting to know the each of them holds the life of the other in their hands. I have great admiration for them. I don’t think I could fathom going through life conjoined as they are. Because of the loving intelligence of their mother and father, whatever the girls chose to do, they will be and are successful! I think sewing for them would be a joy! Just to see their little faces light up. I am blessed to see this wonderful family develop; it is just as God planned all families to be.

Abby and Brittany are not the only conjoined twins that the world really knows. There is also Carmen and Lupita from Mexico and now living somwhere in the US, who are also amazing people. Their personality is just like any of us. Abby and Brittany are now, I believe 32yrs old and they are teachers to 4th and 5th grade students. They are amazing with kids and are upfront so that there are no whispers behind their backs. They all just want to be treated like any other person out there and not see them as conjoined and see them as Abby and Brittany Hensel. Wherever you are, I hope you are doing well!!!

@@pnut3844able Well, one of them is definitely more direct then the other. Their personality is not the same as the Hensel. Just like everyone else noone is the same. The one who is more direct, I guess when you go through life wth a lot of ppl who treat them unfairley, it can make you more fierce. A better way to put it.

They are now in their 30’s, and by what folks have seen/heard/read, Abby got married a few months ago.
The scariest thing about this is that one of them could pass away and I don’t want to imagine how terrifying that would be for the other

Yes, they have two brains, but there isn’t enough of anything that if Abby dies, her part of the body can be ‘cut off.’’
Abby controls the right side of the body, Brit the left.
In another video, their mother said she overheard them figuring things out, and said,
‘If Abby is touching their right leg, Brit can’t feel it, and if Brit is touched their left leg, Abby can’t feel it.’
As an individual sometimes it is hard to love yourself

It's facinating that they control one half each of their bodies, but when one one of them gets embarrased, both hands cover that twin's face automatically. And one can instinctly scratch the other ones mosquito bite without even feeling it? That's insane.

There is no doubt in my mind that could not be farther from the truth. I’m just so joyed and happy to see who they have become.
