Thank you for distinguishing "G582 Magenta" with its fluorescent dye, versus "G651 Primary Magenta," which uses Quinacridone Magenta and should be very light fast. I should test my G651 though. Thanks for the testing! People say, "well Holbein is 'Artist' gouache, rather than 'Designer Gouache'," to say that the name means something in terms of light-fastness. It doesn't. Holbein uses some non-lightfast pigments in their gouache. I'm surprised that their reds are okay, actually, because they definitely use Napthol Red pigments, which shouldn't be lightfast.

It was interesting that the primary colors werent included in this set! I had to get them separately. All artist grade paints, regardless of medium, will always have colors that are fugitive. Winsor and Newton is “Designer” gouache so that tells me the paints are not LF but color chart says otherwise. My LF test of Holbein 108 watercolor set was also surprising. Colors held up well.

Ok, Holbein has been a fav for ease of use but holy smokes…that first column knocked my socks off…lemon yellow, marigold, BPink and all those reds 😻I felt the “fear of being priced out” so I bought 3/4 Irodori sets [-summer] over the holidays. I’d love to see your results, but if you say they performed well too? I’m so happy I splurged on those. Thank you so much for sharing these results. They are spendy for sure…but the quality really is there with Holbein. I’ll share your video w/my gouache instructor.

Wow, I looked very hard for Holbein gouache swatches last year, but really didn't find much! You must have done this video soon after. And you did lightfastness tests to boot! Thank you for doing all this work.
Random fact: I bought 3 out of 4 of the Iridori sets, then realized the artwork on the front of the boxes were done by assembling clip art. That was disappointing! There is a koi fish in the sky of the Autumn set, and a leaf in the sky of the Winter set. I started looking closer and realized it was clip art. :(

Ohh i’ve never looked closely on the irodori boxes. Interesting! Altho surely you would think the artwork represents the product itself? Hmm

Thanks for doing the lightfast test! I work alot with holbein gouache and I wondered how much they would fade, I don't trust 100% what the manufacturer claims

Glad you found it helpful! I also have the lightfast test for the Irodori line. I should make time to film it hehe
Also I agree about manufacturer’s LF ratings. Its always good to do your own LF test just to be sure.

Hi Katrin! I saw in some comments that you were running an irodori lightfastness test. I would appreciate it so much if you posted it! Maybe just a picture for progress if you aren’t done. I just bought all 4 sets in Japan and am itching to try it but I’m such a stickler for lightfast colors!! 😭

    Hi !
Have you ever tried to replicate one specific pigment by mixing primary colors ? Because some people say that pigment can not be replicated by mixing colors. I am a little bit confused.

I'm really surprised how well the pink did in the test! Thank you for the video and your paintings are very lovely 😍

Yes! Even the Holbein watercolor LF test were surprising. The colors expected to fade held up quite well. Even the Irodori line! Some say to avoid those paints due to LF issue but I wouldnt rely on manufacturer’s LF test. I think of it as a guide only.

@@PaletteAdventure oh thank you for bringing up their lightfast rating, I wanted to ask if your test confirm their raring but I though it might be a bit annoying to ask you to check 😅😅

This video is SO helpful. thank you so much! Could you maybe specify in which colours you see noticable change? The reason why I ask this is that sometimes video footage can be misleading due to shadows in the paper. It looks like the cobalt turquoise has faded a bit for example (or this might be true, I'm not sure). Again thanks for all the effort you've put into this!

Colors I note with subtle shifts are Cobalt Tqse - really not much noticeable, Grey No. 2 & 3 and Prussian Blue.
