I have been crocheting for 45 yrs. This is the first time I have seen the SSC. Just proves there is always something new to learn in crocheting and you are never to old to learn a new trick :-) .
It is wonderful that we (who have been crocheting for decades) can always learn new things. And I love RUclips just for that. I find I learn new things almost every day.

Thanks for explaining the reason for the square sc !!! Some teachers will say it doesn't matter but in tapestry, I think it makes a difference and the work looks so much better. By the way, my grandmother frowned on YO the other way ... she could tell !!! LOL

It's one of the old stitches that have sort of been lost with time. I guess that's the good thing about being an 'old timer', I remember a lot of the old stuff. I've been crocheting for about 52 years, and doing colorwork for about 40 years now 😊 It will take just a little bit to get used to the stitch, but you'll get it. 👍 You're very welcome.

No. It was a design my Mom and I worked on for a rock path in front of her house. I honestly never thought of putting it into an actual crochet pattern, lol. I was just working off the pictures we drew. Good idea! I've got a list a mile long, but it's now on the list.

Yes, only back loop. Doing this will keep your stitches lined up a little better. If you don't do back loop your design will lean. It is possible to use hdc, however the design will begin to look a little clunky, and it may start to bow on the sides or center. If you decide to try - make sure you keep your stitches a little loose, and only try on a small piece to start with. I hope this helps you. It's always good to hear from new crocheters.

Thank you for this trick. I'm currently crocheting a tapestry hat. As I work the rows, I noticed the hat fitting tighter and tighter on my head to the point of not fitting at all. How do I prevent this? I will be frogging the hat and starting over. Thank you.
I know this comment is from a year ago, but one thing I've noticed myself doing is tugging on the carried yarns as I go which can warp everything to be tighter than previous rounds. Tugging on the worked seems to help even things back out.

So I have a question about hook size. I'm doing a tapestry crochet cal blanket in double crochet and instructions said use a larger hook size than yarn recommendation to allow for the carried yarn. I noticed you are using a smaller hook size than yarn recommends - is that because it's a basket and you want the stitch tighter, or is that what you always do for tapestry crochet, go down a size?
On a blanket I actually like a little of the carried yarn showing through because it looks like handsewn stitches. But I agree it's not always the look one is after.

Hook size is always determined by the stitch you are using, the final look you want, and sometimes by meeting the correct gauge. In the case of a blanket going up a size might help the blanket lay better, or feel better, or just be softer. In my video I was going for a tighter stitch that would stand on it's own. I really hope this helps. :-)

It looks like those square single crochets give you a crisper design. Am I right? I'm totally new to tapestry crochet. I'm trying to make a potholder that worked in rounds, but, of course, the graph is square. My brain is having a hard time with the translation. I'm hoping you have a video for that!
Yes, a little bit. The design is -- squared up -- a little versus seeing the "V's" of standard single crochet. It honestly depends on the look a person wants. I once did a test crocheting the exact same thing both ways. Then asked several people which they liked better. The results were honestly about 50/50, lol. Can you explain the difference between the square single crochet and the cross stitch to me? They both have you "grabbing " the working end from the above position instead of the under position, but they come out looking very different.
The square single crochet is yarn over, yarn under. So it starts the same, then on the last pull through it's yarn under

Why does my design always lean to the right? What am I doing wrong? I can never seem to get the picture to go straight up. It always leans to the right.
Sorry for the delay in writing back. It sounds like you're working in the round? If you are you need to work with a back loop single crochet, not the full loop. If you aren't working in the round write back and I'll try to help.
