I have re-started a tapestry crochet afghan too many times to count because of so many reasons, one being the lines were just never straight enough for me and another reason was because, no matter what technique I used, carrying yarn on top, behind, etc, my carrying yarn was almost always visible. With this "yarn under" technique, the stitches are so much tighter so the carrying yarn doesnt show through!!!

Tapestry crochet is surprisingly easy to learn. Once you have a few basic skills down, you're pretty much ready to go! You won't be a baby on tapestry crochet for long :)
I am doing a blanket using the tapestry crochet method. At the end of my row, I have to turn my work, so would I just continue to crochet in the back loop? Or would I do that on the RS of the pattern only?
I don't understand how pulling the yarn through with the yarn the other way around the hook can possibly make a difference. Surely, once the yarn is released, it's exactly the same? Can you explain what this step actually does please?
You can't. You would have to learn to crochet in reverse. Which once you learn it you will be glad you did. Or you can chain said 10 then add back at the beginning of the work if you're not making it in the round or cut yarn at the end like they fo in mosaic crochet. I hope I made sense

Hi Donald! You can still make a diagonal line with a MSC, but it would have to be done a little differently. With the MSC, you can have straight horizontal, diagonal lines and vertical lines in the same pattern. With the SC, you can only do straight horizontal and diagonal lines. Diagonal lines done with the MSC kinda resemble stairs, whereas with the SC it's just a basic diagonal line.
After I do 3 rows the stitches start looking crazy not uniform or as it should. Could you do a tutorial for several rows so that we could see all steps with color changes

If you want you can cut yarn at end of each row Or do what I do. I just chain 10 or more depending on what you want and then fold rhe work and then start back at beginning. Oryou can learn to reverse crochet. If you are rigjrhanded it's just going in thru the back of the work and flick kf the wrist. You might fond a video or 2 somewhere. To see it being worked.
Omnia omnia For the first part of the stitch, the hook goes under the yarn, then hooks it and pulls it back. The yarn loops over the hook from back to front. For the second part, it's reversed. Once the yarn is pulled back through, it goes over the hook from front to back.

Absolutely give it a try! It may even work better for you than this method. I have a theory that every factor about the way a person crochets (tension, how they hold the hook, the angle at which they crochet) affects the way a stitch turns out. So it's very possible that yarn under then yarn over could work better for you. Let me know how it goes!

The best way to do diagonal lines with the MSC is to make them three stitches wide, with 2 of the 3 stitches overlapping on each round. If you look at what I was working on, you can create diagonal lines 1 stitch wide but it doesn't really connect well on diagonals that go down from left to right. Diagonal lines 2 stitches wide still aren't very smooth looking. 3 stitches will give you the smoothest look without the lines being too thick.
Thank you. It would seem the msc stitch works best with vertical and horizontal lines. However, the standard sc will work better on diagonals. I plan to have some outlines which run on a diagonal line, and I think a 3-stitch wide outline may not be what I'm looking for this time. This is good to know as I plan out other patterns, though. Ok, it's hard for me to figure out the "yarn over" and "yarn under", the only thing I can figure out is that the yarn over, the yarn is actually beneath the hook, and yarn under, the hook is turned down and the yarn is beneath the hook. Right? Then you pull through, aren't you technically doing the same thing? "pulling through"? Also, I find the "yarn under" awkward. I'll just have to try it and see. I'll come back!

lol that seam in the background is gonna give me nightmares, what happened there? are you working in the round without a slip stitch, that does not usually work great for color work imo, using a better method with a slip stitch will make it line up better especially at the seam, it's a beautiful piece but imo that seam ruins it even if it's hidden later or not seen while the piece is being worn, I like that piece that's actually why I initially clicked on the video to check it out since I already know this method for lining stuff up vertically, but that seam is rough, just a protip lol, also in the video you call this tapestry crochet but this is actually more like a faire isle method, tapestry crochet isn't faire isle, it's a completely different form often also called mosaic crochet, but it looks beautiful and its a fun method I like all different types of methods, and that piece is definitely cool definitely a lot of potential, just the seam is the only huge issue, anyway have a good day, happy crocheting

I believe the hook was 3.75 mm and the yarn was size 4 :)
