Let me know what you think about dedicated farming in your favorite Borderlands games. Do you like it?, hate it?, or think it needs changed?
One more thing I should have mentioned is the Hunt community event is in trouble if dedicated drop farming isn't added to future titles.

I definitely think there should be a base of dedicated farming so you can find an enemy to farm for a certain item you want.
I do also like having a decent world drop rate on top of that as I find it a nice way to try new weapons. My personal issue with the world drop rate for BL3 wasn’t so much the amount, but more the amount of just bad legendaries like the woodblocker. And those bad legendaries carried over to Wonderlands it seems.

My friend and I started a BL2 run literally last week, and I couldn’t agree enough with this video. The farming is what lets players find fun skips through the map, it definitely expanded movement in this game over time because of it, and the routing of dedicated drops adds a basically infinite amount of replay ability. BL2 is lightning in a bottle

I dont Min Max either but it gets annoying when you want to try content or try some of the harder content like in OP levels in BL2 or even you fall behind in a gear in a normal playthrough and find yourself farming XP or new gear. Personally I like pushing Story, Quests and Content without worrying about gear or xp falling behind. Dedicated drops also get annoying in BL2 when they arent scaled to your level. For me BL3 is better than BL2 since I had less time stuggling and dying and more shooting and pushing for content which is a problem for me when I play BL2 causually.
Dedicated drops arent really a big issue for me, its scaling of content throught the stages of the game, especially endgame OP levels in BL2 when I want to run through the whole peak since I never have and still havent but its a chore if you dont have the right gear or setup and takes too many tries that I'd rather end up playing a different game. BL3 mayhem levels is my kinda of thing that I like but I get that people that prefer BL2 for various reasons. BL3 is much more relaxing than BL2 in the sense of a complete playthrough that I can just chill while playing which is what I prefer.

Honestly, legendaries should be a bit more common than they have been in normal gameplay, and 'dedicated farming' while it seems fun, I found that I liked Borderlands 1 a lot as well, mostly because every orange drop you had was something special. I guess I'll die on this hill, but the weapon in 2 I am the most hyped about still is the Shredder. It sucks as a weapon and it's about as useful as a wet towel launcher, but I love getting one just cause it's not 'spend time and you get the gun', it feels special. I played a lot of BL2, and it is a great game, but I feel like dedicated drops have just kinda lead to this whole "here is the route for your build" mentality? That special feeling is just kinda lost with all the dedicated stuff.
I get that people want farming or whatever, but it shouldn't be dedicated honestly. Maybe instead, every boss gets buffed for endgame, and you can re-fight them to gain random drops at a decent rate, and try lots of things on the go. But then that would also require Gearbox to really make many legendary items worth using, and I kinda have my doubts they could pull it off...?

my opinion is opposite to yours , I believe the game should reward for you just playing it since you have already buyed it , a game that need you to search on internet builds and drop spots to get further is not respecting your time well. I know not many people will agree with me since a youtuber comment section is like an echo chamber so you only hear the same opinion over and over again from people dedicated to borderlands since it went out, but the fact is that most borderlands 2 players never actually stuck with it to the end game because it was overly complicated ( multiple story playthrough , obscure drop spots for specific legendaries, most legendaries being gimmicky), getting to the hardest difficutly without any help would take a ridiculous amount of hours and let's be honest most people have jobs, family, a life to actually tend to so they just do not have the time to kill every boss a ridiculous amount of time to see what it drops.

@@tolmir2929 I definitely see what you’re saying, but I was looking at dedicated farming from a systemic standpoint rather than from the view of bl2 specifically. The reason why I enjoy dedicated farming in bl2, bl3, and even tps is because I’ve invested the time to know where and what to farm even though it’s not really required to progress. The reason why I enjoy the system is because you don’t need to interact with it in order to enjoy and play through the game, which is sort of the crux of my particular opinion. The fact that it rewards time investment, but not requires it. Also as someone who’s played a lot of co-op I enjoy having to stretch my creativity and make setups around random stuff that drops. I def agree with you that most people probably don’t enjoy bl2 as much as I do, since I had the freedom of highschool when I got into bl2. 11:30 I think it's worth mentioning that in BL3, there's a common trait among weapons that can spawn in multiple elements including non-elemental: the non-elemental variant has a much higher chance to spawn compared to elemental variants. Go to Lootlemon and check the Redline, Flakker, Sickle, Craps, Prompt Critical, Dowsing Rod, Anarchy, The Monarch and many more, you'll notice the drop chance of the non-elemental version is upwards of 55% while the non-elemental versions are much less than that, typically 8.2% for weapons capable of spawning in all elements. There are exceptions such as weapons that always have an element (Maliwan guns, the Blood-Starved Beast) where all elements have an equal chance to spawn, the Light Show which has a 26.5% chance for the non-elemental version and 14.5% for elemental versions and the AutoAime which is 25% for no element or the three elements it can spawn with.
I don't know how it is in BL2 or Wonderlands, but maybe going forward it's worth changing the spawn rate of each element (including non-elemental) to be even with all other possible elements for that item and having a 10-15% legendary drop chance in most cases. There may be a valid argument for having non-elemental versions of weapons be much more common than elemental variants, but like Joltz said the chances for a specific roll of an item you want gets much smaller when you consider parts and elements. On top of that, BL still works on the archaic method of save-quitting to reset a drop source, unlike other RPGs such as Xenoblade Chronicles where you don't have to take the time to go through a loading screen for every run as someone else here stated.

    1. I agree with dedicated drops, bl2 did it best but I think a balance of both. I think bl3 cheapened legendries but I would like everything to have a source but also raids/major bosses would be good sources of world drops. World drops can be a lot of fun but not as the only source. Its like used record shopping, you don't know what the store will have to you look until you find a hidden gem.
    2. When TPS came out the community was also in a bad place to communicate with GBX, the biggest influencers were all quite toxic and just insulted gearbox and the devs pulled back a bit from communication because every time they did things went ugly quick.
    3. I appreciate your comments about wonderlands just wanted to be a place to celebrate games and not rag on them.
    4. I also found farming in wonderlands dull, and I didn't keep playing it
    5. I also like going back to maps and enjoying the whole game and different maps. In bl3 it turned into kill the same big boss over and over for a world drop and that was boring. I like variety.
    6. Knowing where to get guns as you go is another great point, sometimes you can't get your preferred gun until later but there is a b or c tier that will do. I remember when UVHM first came out I would keep going back to get a new lascaux every few levels because I had fun with that and it was effective.
    7. The route comment, yeah in the dust jumping your car to get to gette and mobley, or I liked to run routes where I could farm multiple guns. So go the back route to them, farm for chubbies for pearls and legendary coms, then get and mob for lyuda and veruc, then jump to the back area for the black queen and a nukem I think, its been a bit. But you also had a spot in front of ellies to look for a gwens head. So one run could look for so much gear. I found that more enjoyable than a quick run for one thing. You could do a similar thing in the frostburn canyon for a few guns and some other maps. This is that repeatability that bl3 and wonderlands missed for me. I don't know why but I always enjoyed kingmong farming as well.
    8. Balance of gear and where you find it is tough, the harold I think was bad that it was that easy and that early. Having people get god mode guns so easy isn't good. The norfleet orginally you had to kill vermi, which was fitting I thought. If the harold was behind the warrior maybe it would be better and maybe something a bit less OP with savage lee. But so the game grows patches happen and guns get better and worse. I think gbx should be in a better place now to understand power of guns and do better with where guns drop related to power. But this will never be perfect because the community will find ways to break things.
    9. Save quit does suck, especially for consoles and low power PCs. They should be able to reset maps at this point.
    10. The 10/15 I agree on, 30% with parts, elements was bad.
    11. Crowded loot pools need to go away, one item per unquie enemy/boss. No heads or skins to dilute it.
    12. The easter egg guns to just find were great and should stay. just goes to show how well bl2 did it
    13. The parkour tower idea, they kinda did that with vault symbols in bl2, I agree hidden gear would be fun.
    14. For the mission rewards being moved to the boss, I like this but I also think if you made them item for the day in vendors just in that map it would be better. Each map maybe has 10 side quests at the most, so the pool would drastically decrease.
Great video, you should do more of these. You can do these while still being positive and constructive. This is why im glad people like you and k6 are the bigger voices in the community now, its much better than it was before. Cheers.

One of my favorite things to do in any BL games is to do a new run. I like to try other characters and idk, it’s just fun. But it isn’t fun when I have to rely on really bad white-blue rarities for parts of the run and then sometimes I can get purples. Legendaries don’t need to drop at level 5, but at least make the guns they’re wanting us to use, useful. I STRONGLY agree. I have been addicted to borderlands 2 since release, when I was only 12 years old. 22 now and still play it when other games get boring for me. Dedicated drop farming is what got me hooked! I remember being 16, hopping in a voice call with my friend, and us each farming bunker in our own worlds for hours every night for a sham. Not even a 94 sham! Back then, even getting a single sham drop was like striking gold 🤣 I could never get as hooked on BL3, or wonderlands. It’s just not the same feelings as bl2. I know it’s divisive, but I HATE the drop rates in the newer games. 5+ legendaries everytime you kill a boss? Common mobs giving word drops every few levels on a play through? It just completely kills the hype and progression of the game for me. In my opinion, when the game first comes out, and everyone goes into their first run blind, the average should be 1 or 2 legendary drops per playthrough, if you are not intentionally farming. I LOVE going blind through my first playthrough, and having to look at every chest, every drop, to see if these whites or greens have higher stats then my current load out. In bl3, my first playthrough I just jumped from legendary to legendary, didn’t even bother looking at ground loot. It’s boring.
End game bl2- you farm named enemies for their dedicated drop. You are HYPE when you see a single orange beam fly out of their body. Yes parts can be hard to farm for, but it’s not ALWAYS necessary. I’ve never really cared about parts unless I’m really enjoying the farm, and I’ve still been able to easily push through endgame in bl2
Now look at bl3- I did play it quite a bit for the first 6 months after release. You kill a boss, and it literally drops 5+ legendaries, every single run, and you just routinely walk through all the orange beams, quickly scanning if you got the one you were wanting. It’s just lame. Where is the legendary hype? Where is that “YES!” when you kill Savage Lee or King Mong and see that orange beam fly out of their body?

Not sure if someone commented this already but an idea for the quest reward vendor you talked about, what it could be is that the vendor sells the item at the level you got it at then at the end of the story it scales up to the highest level for the playthrough.
eg. you get the sand hawk at lvl 40 in TVHM, then you kill the warrior you can buy it at lvl 50.

8:50 concerning the OP legendary items in early game. I think most people don't inform themselves how drops work or who drops what strong item before a first run (at least i don't know anybody who does). And even if you get lucky and find that Harold or Fastball, it is as you said: You get a fun toy for the next 10 levels, with which you can oneshot almost everyting. But that also makes you wonder what other awesome items you can get from all the uniqe enemies.
I, for example, didn't even realize there was something like dedicated drops until I started watching your videos! I just played the game with the color progression and started finding random legendaries in the endgame. I still remember how surprised I was when I found my first Unforgiven in a red chest.
After watching a few of your ultimate runs I started planning my own playthroughs more in depth and got another 500 hours out of BL2. And even though I don't much enjoy minmaxing I love making noticeable progress in my builds and equipment. And that is definitely easier, more versatile and, quite simply, much more fun with dedicated drops.
Because everything is better than farming Graveward for half an hour just because he is the most eficient world drop farm.

It would be cool, if fast travel stations from borderlands would work like the bonfires from Darksouls.
For example: the moment when u press „e“ on the fast travel ststion, every enemy will get resetted.
So you dont waste time with thinks like quit the game and reload the game

This could not be more true, what a great video. I absolutely love this franchise but Bl1 had the chest farming which was super fun and Bl2 had the dedicated drops which was amazing. Sadly the other games haven’t been able to come close to the longevity and just out right enjoyment of these 2 juggernauts. Hopefully there’s a borderlands 2 remastered soon. Love the vids Joltz🤙🤙

Boss Coins or Tokens. And it takes a certain combo to unlock a boss arena. So you can fight bosses in the arena and they only drop their dedicated loot pool. Like the Slaughter Shaft but just bosses. The drop chance could stay the same but say you put in 3 Graveward coins, you fight Graveward 3 times no reset. Or Savage Lee and 2 Road Dog all at once to get their dedicated drop. And certain combos could unlock higher tier gear such as chaotic takes 2 of this and 1 of this and 1 of that in order to get the chaotic variant to drop. And then you have a fun endgame that while is repeatable, isn't just 5 sec wipe everything rinse repeat.

I think you could maybe tie the rarity system into your level like say 1-10 whites are most common with some greens, 11-20 blues start to drop and green/white becomes the common, 21-30 epic starts to spawn, blues become a little more common so on and at 31-40 legendary starts to drop at maybe a little lower chance than once you reach max level.
Might not be to everyones liking, but I could support that kind of dropsystem, almost like it is in most mmo or rpgs. It would let the developers design the early game for you going up in rarity over time and by the end of normal mode or once you start a TVHM-like mode you can than destroy the game with legendaries if you like.
Mission rewards could be added to the specific minibosses like in the BL2 community patch is a good way to do it I think, I like on my Maliwan Maya to run in a kill Toothless Terry for the Pimpernel and hope I get a good roll and element.
I agree with everything, the lack of dedicated loots in Wonderlands is what has made me not even buy it yet and waiting for a good sale to try it for the story. Right now I play BL2 the most and drop in to BL3 once in a while, it got better with dedicated loot, but I still don't like the mayhem modifiers to the weapons/grenades/shields.

Amazing video, whenever I was thinking "But there's this and that" you just said right after, this goes to show how close we from the community want the same thing.
~And just to add I think a good idea to make farming cool, also without save and quitting, would be to bring Underdome back, *BUT REWORK IT* a lot of people disliked the underdome, but I think it was because it was way too long and had close to no reward, cut at least in half the duration for it, add new mods(maybe one with just bosses), and make it rewardable, it's a Slaughterdome+
~Also for the mission reward, I think one way to do it, is to just make those items parts locked, since they're uniques easy to get, I don't think making those specific items part locked would be a bad idea, Borderlands 3 did this(except when it was a legendary) and well, you didn't have to keep farming over and over quest rewards...

Joltz, your personal opinions and translations of the community’s opinion are always so, so appreciated. Never worry about whether people won’t enjoy a non-playthrough video or just a video talking about stuff like this, like that pearlescent video you did a little while back. We need voices like yours, people who love the games so much and truly just want to see them shine and have so much of the community look up to them. Let’s hope that the community banding together can get Gearbox to take more notice to what we’re saying and the worries we genuinely have about upcoming titles. As always, phenomenal vid 👌

I think there needs to be a variety of drop tables for dedicated and generic loot. It gets way too boring only having one or the other.
Having a button on fast travel stations that respawns unique enemies/resets the map would be a nice way of keeping the search for better skips while also enabling co-op farming and getting rid of save quit farming. Could also be used to re-issue quests that you’ve already completed, or maybe have that as a station in the hub of the game.
I’m also a fan of having low drop rates for high tier loot, but for some items, trying to get a good roll takes way too long.
My perfect system would be to have a grinder like machine that requires some rare end game resource and allows you to swap the parts on unique/legendary guns. It would be limited so you had to have the same gun so the parts would be “compatible”. And I’d probably also make it so that the donor gun gets destroyed in the process. That way there’s always an incentive to farm for the dedicated loot because you can combine all your farming efforts without feeling like you wasted hours without getting the drop you wanted.

  • @richpitch

I think it would be nice to have a system implemented that would allow us to get the specific parts on a weapon we want, maybe something like the grinder from tps where when you put three of the same legendary guns you get out that same gun with new parts and the matching parts would stay. I think the would help counter the problem of needed to farm for specific element/part as it should make it more unlikely to get a drop 10 times but in the wrong element/prefix.

  • @TheWarriorXander

I think a way to deal with the balance issue would be have separate versions of items that drop from bosses. Not just based on level, but like first time killing a boss they have a really high chance to drop a blue or purple version of their legendary item, which has the same special mechanic or gimmick, but does less damage or something to make it inferior. Then when you go back and farm the boss, the drop chance lowers, but you can try to get the legendary version of the item with whatever rolls you're looking for. Kind of like some dungeon rewards in MMO's like WoW, where the base version of the dungeon drops a blue item, but the hard mode of that same dungeon drops a purple version with vastly better stats. Just an idea they could play around with to make the loot more interesting. Would also give players something to look forward to on repeat playthroughs, if they know a certain boss drops a really fun weapon to play with.

I couldn’t agree more with Joltz! One thing a lot of people tend to forget as well is Borderlands is a FANTASTIC co-op game! But the way farming works in BL2 it’s so jumbled if trying to farm dedicated drops with friends! I would love if you traveled out of map and back in enemies/bosses would reset! Then you could have fun farming with your friends! Imagine having 2 or 3 buddies huddled around a loot pool searching and reading stats for a legendary after FINALLY getting it together!

  • @imaginari8013

The issue I see with mission rewards is, once you turn in the mission, you are locked in the menu with no way out but to accept the reward and move forward. Imagine if you could hit the "escape" key and back out of the menu without turning in the mission, then save-quit and get another roll at the reward. This would be functionally identical to read-only farming without the drawbacks.

what do you think of a parts bench for weapons? let's say you can take the matching grip off a gun that has bad parts and put that good grip on a nearly perfect one. you'd still have to farm for that gun both times and get the lucky rolls, just not all at once

I'd say the Last Rites has to be one of the funnest weapons to use, and for me, Mistrial of The Gull is an underrated but very strong Assault Rifle, I always do every single quest so it's relieving to find them in Vending Machines, especially if you'd want one at the max Chaos Level.

dedicated farming would be better if we had a workshop system
have you been wanting a perfect legendary to your needs? you can farm a couple and scrap some of the legendaries in the workshop (found at the sanctuary hub area) for 1 part of their respective gun/shield. so, you can scrap a harold for the torgue grip and then later on fuse that grip into another harold you have to make the perfect dpuh. this system could also be used for every weapon in the game. and for legendaries, maybe you can only have 2 parts stored at a time to make farming a necessity still. but maybe not

On pre there’s a shotgun that can carry you for a long time if you get lucky at a vending machine or at red belly.
The boomacorn is a shotgun that shoots one of every element type, each pellet is a different element. I got it at redbelly for the first time, it’s best if you shoot at the ground beneath the feet of your enemy cause it’s basically a splash damage weapeon

Hard agree, I finally got around to making a Blightcaller in WL and hit lvl 40. I'm now trying to figure out what I want to farm for and what direction I want to take my build. I looked up some of rhe gear I wanted and it basically comes down to Chaos Chamber or the Wheel of Fate. Like I just want to be able to go to a specific boss and get stuff. Sure some things do have dedicated drops but you have to go through a whole dungeon or mirror just to get nothing. It just a horrible time investment. Like I don't mind if Chambers and the Wheel were an alternative, but they shouldn't be the only option.

Though there is in fact dedicated farming in Wonderland but you do get more sent to de the bunnies making it a afterthought. I dont think the problem is the amount you get but the part variety.
In bl2 weapons only had a few parts (about 900 variants per weapon) making it easier to get a legendary that you want, from bl3 onwards the part variety (about 80000 variants per weapon) makes it near impossible to get a good parted weapon.
Part variety has to change just change the drop rates the same and no dice.
