    "I didn't think I was gonna do another one of these videos, but here we are"
    And I, for one, am extremely happy that you did another one :)
    By the number of comments, I'm guessing I'm not the only one :)
    On a related note- THANK you for not making everything black, dark brown, dark greys. Seriously appreciate it.

    Old maps ( or aged newer maps), old tables for games and old games displayed. For near the candles - the vintage thing to sniff out the candle. Old brass instruments, old magnifying glass. Because of the cigars - old brass ashtrays, also for displaying trinkets. Piano roll papers. Old stamps (not postal stamps). Old printing trays and letters or letter press. Any kind of old gear, especially metallic, leather bound notebooks and leather cases, pencil cases or rolls, old used painted brushes. Easeals for painting and music paper stands, of course old.
    How i love this video ❤❤❤❤

    Not sure this comment is exactly appropos to this particular video, but while probably every DA fan acknowledges The Secret History as seminal in the genre, does anyone agree that the works of HP Lovecraft, with his focus on gothic New England settings, academic protagonists, and arcane research esp at Miskatonic University, is quite traceable as an early progenitor of the vibe look and aesthetic of dark academia?? I think its worth a mention. Fascinating how these aesthetics evolve, yet the pedigree remains grounded.

      Oh, absolutely. M.R. James even more so. He was an academic expert in church architecture and a boarding school master. His translations of the New Testament Pseudepigrapha are still highly regarded today. His ghost stories feature academic and clerical protagonists.

      @@bukharagunboat8466 interesting! Sounds like a great new rabbit hole to explore. Thanks for the lead! I also can't help but conjure up images of Mary Shelly's good Dr. Frankenstein and his research!

      What say ye, Ms. Lanchen? "A deep dive into Dark Academia: the black roots"? We can mix up a tea from one of those lovely Victorian carts, cozy up and give audience. 🍵

      I agree completely. Did not started with S.H. I am older, so i lived like this, and liked what we call now DA since I was an adolescent, 35 years ago. And many before us.

      The reason why The Secret History is so central to DA is because the story itself was about modern/contemporary people with a more late Victorian/Edwardian lifestyle/interests or aesthetic. Which is pretty much what current DA enthusiasm replicates. The modern romanticization of the past.
      HP Lovecraft and Shelley were contemporary to their times horror. Literally like Scream or Friday The 13th of their time.

    My house, a five bedroom built in 1906 is in DA. Living room and dining room are a dark mystery color sort of a green gray, hard wood floors with Persian rugs and giant over the top lead crystal chandeliers. The drawing room/ study is in a burgundy color with an antler chandelier leather bound books. We still have the kitchen and two bathrooms yet to do. Lots of fun and the house is perfect for DA.

    Inspirational, I would add an ornate brass candle snuffer and those portable candleholders that are mounted onto a small plate with a handle to carry about or set on a table. I printed a couple of anatomical sketches by Da Vinci onto parchment look art paper. I prefer mine framed but they would look great simply tacked up with torn or burnt edges in a student study. I plan to add an exotic botanical watercolor, perhaps with bugs or butterflies in the style of the times, should be fun to research and paint myself. Next project is a wall vignette of my trip to Paris, showcasing vintage Paris and now - not quite the continental tour the elite of the day sent their offspring on - but it will blend in with the travel vibe of the Academia Aesthetic. Embroidery should be heraldic not cutsie. I'm old enough to have seen a few true Dark Academia studies - male dominated studies, the only embroidery would be heraldic or a popular Quote perhaps surrounded by ivy...Great video!

    We have a writing desk that the secretary desk reminded me of. I have plans to restore it for years, but the more videos I watch on RUclips/Insta the more I learn and know what to do now. If I did it any sooner I could have ruined it.
    Few other pieces around the house that could do with a refresh as well. Yours and Rachel Maksy wallpaper has inspired me to go that direction for the sitting room. Dad was a carpenter so he made the furniture in the 80's. Going to refresh the cabinet, by taking off the huge lip, refresh it and then the shelving is in cubes, so we're removing the "cubes". Just plain long shelves. Top shelf is already like that so the ones below that are the "cubes".
    I have a 20L/5 Gallon fish tank, so upgrading that to a 100L/20 Gallon tank and the cabinet is really strong so fish tank is safe on it.
    Then we're getting a colourful patterned but dark BG wallpaper for the conservatory. Think birds/animal print. Fill it with plants and the writing desk will be for in here too. We also have an unused shoe cabinet in a similar dark tone for shoe storage and for more plants. We currently use baskets and it looks untidy.
    Our house is very cold in WInter so we're meant to be getting new windows, so we have to wait until after that before we redecorate

    Wow, my mom was decorating dark academia style before it was a thing. But since the furniture and paint are in whites/ivories/beige, I guess it's more light academia? She was looking for a grandfather clock and a drink serving cart she didn't buy them, but this list reminded me we still need those...Thanks for the fun video!

      Regarding the dark walls, shelves, tables....black, black, dark grey, black, dark brown accents, etc I'm right there with you , 100%. That's not even a "gothic" vibe.
      And I've started remaking a spare bedroom into my DA Ravenclaw inspired library room, so I wish you all the best in your Slytherin style!!

    In the 1990s, I worked with/for a young attorney who was so inspired by Donna Tartt’s “The Secret History,” he wrote his own book. This attorney is now an author of eight published books of legal thrillers and is an appellate court judge in Illinois. He prosecuted Rod Blagojevich at his impeachment trial and won.

    This video made me think of a different, yet connected version: items that are aesthetic, but functional. Vintage thingsvthat coukx have a modern use. For example, printers trays. They used to hold letters and common words for printing, but now for display.

      Functional items are the best! I don't have room for things that are strictly decorative and just sit there.

    H yes, pianos. Be aware that they are easier to acquire than to get rid of! No one wants them anymore, and you may end up having to pay someone to haul it away. Speaking from experience.

    I have always leaned towards the dark academia, long before it was a thing. I have so many of the items you listed. I've also had so many of the items you listed and have since sold or donated because space became a huge problem when I lived in a townhome. I now live in an older house (1941) and often wish I had some of the items that I've gotten rid of. I think if I were to look for a couch, I would go for the Chesterfield. I think they are better made than an actual Victorian and likely to be a lot more comfortable. Granted, Victorian looks awesome but look at how thin that cush is where your tush should go. Good old horsehair anyone? Also, we played croquet and no estate. Just in the back yard. We had a decent size backyard, but not estate standards, for sure. I like all of your ideas; however, I must pass on the bones and the bugs and taxidermy. If I thought I needed the look of a deer head or something, I would probably go for a fake one and give it a little DIY. Love your DA videos. Keep them coming.

    Along with the houseplants, I thinks Tulips are a really fitting flower, because there’s a scene in The Secret History when Charles and Camilla mention having an overwhelming amount of tulips that they picked before it snowed.

    Once again I feel at odds with a couple of the suggestions so far, as the clash of true Victorian vs. Electricity, like the desk fan being more film noir than something a wealthy undergrad might collect and the oil lamp being like the LITERAL OPPOSITE of a chandelier??? Let's just say I've never seen the latter in a cabin, so why vice-versa?

      I definitely need to collect less trinkets. Still haven't solved my bookshelf problem, anyway.

    • @Highland_Paddy
      @Highland_Paddy 4 месяца назад

      Yes, I was thinking again last night, though, about how inconvenient it is to want a vintage item but then still require some modern equivalent. I mean, some people will play dress-up every day and only play 78s on a wind-up Victrola, but I still want a CD player and a regular record player that I don't have to worry if it malfunctions that I can never replace, etc. Or those paperback books that you ACTUALLY read instead of ruining some expensive leather-bound tome, that which many titles won't be available anyway.

    • @Highland_Paddy
      @Highland_Paddy 4 месяца назад +1

      I would say the leather couch would be much more durable and more adaptable to other design choices you may make in the future, but they can also have their drawbacks like being more sticky in summer weather or something? I suppose if you could afford both, you'd already have them, but one may be lighter and easier to move than the other if stairs are involved.

    • @Highland_Paddy
      @Highland_Paddy 4 месяца назад

      I mean, you're sitting in kind of a tufted chair already or whatever?
