Old money decor inspiration: Sister Parrish, Mary Randolph Carter, etc. Old money doesn’t throw out their furniture, their fine porcelain china or their linens. They repair, refurbish, recycle to the younger family members.

The small crystal cups are for cider or punch…typically they come with a punch bowl; the tiny wine glasses are for port or a dessert wine, or an aperitif or degestif.

Most of the glass you were looking at were Cut Glass and not Crystal although there were a couple. Old Money is definitely Crystal! I look for it always and it typically much more expensive then cheap Crystal or cut glass.

  • @TubeTorte
    @TubeTorte 2 месяца назад +4

I think "old" is a relative term in this case. I'm a lot older than you are and none of those items seemed anything other than out of date and mostly worthless. Old money meant they had it for generations , appreciated quality and things that lasted. They did not like flashy stuff as that symbolized new money which they really looked down upon.

  • @aob6033

For Old Money style, I think that antique shops would likely be easier to find things, sometimes they can be more expensive, but not always!

It’s funny- for the dishes, the more colourful ones would be older and the more sedate ones would be more modern. In the Victorian era, more flowery dishes were the norm. Great finds!

I gravitate towards this style sort of coupled with Old Academia. I also have to throw in some degree of creepy chic. Old things, old brass or bronze clocks, silverplated champagne urns and platteres, actual vintage lighting, leather chairs and sofas and ornate wood items. And a color palette of sepia tone:, creams, ivory, browns, golds and black. Colors from nature and neutrals.

The hand painted letter box and the sweet little beaded one were perfect finds! And... oh my... those small lamps with the beaded swag fringe were amazing for the old money look. The little tiny crystal stemware are for cordials, a sweet syrupy liqueur. Loved the black ornate table at the end with the gold detail.

The small crystal glasses are used for sherry sometimes. My mother and I always sipped sherry out of small glasses like that when she would visit in the winter….love them. Great memories.

the cut glass cup with the handle is for punch or eggnog at a party, usually comes in a set with a punch bowl and a ladle. The small stemmed glass is called an aperitif glass. for a shot of cointreau or drambuie or framboise.

little cups with handles belong with a punch bowl. They were so popular in the 70s. I still have a set as they are "back" the small stem glasses are for sherry, port or after dinner liquors Oh yes! the vibe! Cheers

Here in the UK, I'm sure that silver items are supposed to have a hallmark. The idea is that you can know whether an item is really made of silver or not.
Do you not have hallmarks on silver items in the U.S.?

You're funny! Your idea of old money... Isn't really that old. The little glass cups are for a punch bowl set. The other cut glass pieces you were looking at are pretty and would fit the aesthetic. The lamp shades you were looking at are not old money. They're called pleated lamp shades. Though I do agree with you, they are nice to look at.

Your videos are captivating...as are you. As an Irishman whose family took a lot from the Anglo-Irish tradition, I can tell you the first (handled) cups were for punch. The second were for either sherry or port; they are interchangeable, although more traditional port glasses are 50ml 'thimble' glasses and so are much smaller

I admire your eye for the aesthetic. Thanks for sharing. Cut glass is not the same as crystal, although they appear similar, crystal is a different material. Some of the cut glass you put back was worth decent value to collectors, I was dying as you put it back on the shelf. On the other hand, many of us lack the time, energy, and organizational skills to resell things we find, no matter how valuable they may be. That's where my ADHD kicks my butt.

The small cups could go with what used to be luncheon sets. There would be a plate and a round ridged area, where the cup would sit. It could also be from a punch set, possibly. The small, stemmed glasses are sometimes referred to as cordial glasses and can be used for after dinner drinks that are meant to be sipped and are smaller amount vs a glass of wine. If an item is sterling silver, it will have a mark. It's likely much of what you were seeing was silver plate. Still nice but not as valuable.

Nice shopping. Your glass if a punch bowl one which should match a big bowl and others. Smaller one is for liqueur but nowadays they can be used however you wish. With silver & dishes check the back for the Hallmark (symbol/writing). It will tell you what they are. Sometimes good silver is very heavy as it has a copper base underneath. Often now sometimes left unpolished if someone likes that look. Enjoy your goodies.

The heavy glasses are lead crystal. This IS old money, but not a smart purchase as lead is dangerous. The other glassware was just that - glass, pressed glass, cut glass. It's pretty but not much value. You should have purchased the red letter holder - that was a good find.
