  • Hey everyone this is my first tutorial video and if you need to replace/ rebuild your locks I hope this helps. All credit goes to www.billswebspa... the man who made this page for the tutorial I used. I used his tutorial to do the job and filmed it so there is a second tutorial that covers some areas that weren't covered in the online one. Get a kit on ebay for like 26$

    Thanks for this video. I bought an e30 with no driver's door lock so I really needed to see that the first 2 tumblers you took out on each side are the "S" or special type of which there are a smaller number in the kit. What was also interesting to me it appears that you replaced those tumblers with the standard ones and I'm assuming the lock worked just fine? My understanding is there is some "deadlock" function that is enabled by the 4 special tumblers but they are obviously not required to simply make it function as a door lock unless you went back and fixed that later. Which is also interesting and useful information. Life is a learning adventure!

      Doug Beuerman Hope the video helped! I just replaced them one for one. I didn’t know there was any special tumblers? My issue was that the old ones had made the key kind of sloppy and annoying to lock and unlock so I replaced all the tumblers to restore the tightness and so you couldn’t just stick random things in there haha. I think different car keys could open my old car..

      Ben Spoolin notice the 4 tumblers furthest from the key insertion side (2:45 and a bit after) have smaller tabs on them than the 7 closest to the key insertion side. Those are the “special” tumblers that come in the kit. But it seems the lock works just fine with the standard types in all 11 as can be seen after replacement. So what the heck. 👍🏻

    With the rebuild kit you need the old pin from the old lock cylinder? The new rebuild kit don't come with new tumblers.

    Hi, can you rebuild the right door lock with a left kit as I can only find left door lock kits. Thank you

    while you have the tumbler out, can you still lock your car? i'm going to this soon, while my car sits parked on the street.

    • @BenSpoolin
      @BenSpoolin  9 лет назад

      No you cannot lock the car, there will be a gaping hole in your door where the cylinder used to be. I duct taped over the hole so nothing could get into the door from the outside. Maybe sit at a window or something and check on it periodically if you can? the rebuild part shouldn't take so much time, it's more the removing and putting back in that takes a while, just make sure you don't have to leave it without a lock overnight.

      Actually, yes you can if you have central locking. I have an 84 318i, which is like the bottom of the barrel when it comes to E30s - I can lock/unlock any door and it will lock all of them, but the trunk lock works best for me, seems like it is the smoothest

      ^ he's right. I wasn't even thinking about that because my locks are super clapped out haha I'm envious of your central locking. There will still be a hole in your door though

      there was a hole until i completed my own tumbler rebuilt. I also installed a remote entry. it's been a good day.

    Hey, I was doing this, and I can't find the roller bearing in the packet.. I guess I lost it. Can anyone tell me the size of it so I can replace it?? thanks!

    • @BenSpoolin
      @BenSpoolin  7 лет назад

      It's small. (No idea how to quantify the size of it) That's a bummer man did you ever find it?
