    Had Rombauer to win and the exacta Rombauer over Midnight Bourbon. Liked the jockey switch to Flavian Pratt and he was working great and his third in the Bluegrass Stakes was much better than it looked, because he closed into a slow early where the first ran one two at every call. Won me $325.

    I had it... Midnight Bourbon-Ram-Rombauer-Crowded Trade. I figured Concert Tour an Medina Spirit would run each other outta gas. I like the switch to Irad on MB but I didn't figure he'd run so close to the pace. That mile was fast (1:34&3!). I thought Ram ran a good race last out, but, hey Irad was riding him in that race. Switching to Santana didn't work out.
    I should have had the exacta on a 3 horse wheel, but I didn't play it 😡. I did the same thing on the Pletcher box in the Wood 😡😡!

    Rombauer's workout on May 8 in comparison to March's tipped he is now a different horse. .Midnight Bourbon pressed Medina Spirit all thru-out and outdueled Medina Spirit, who ran out of gas. I guess the KTD really took a lot out of him. Concert Tour disappointed Baffert's fans twice.

    if you look at that race he ran before the Preakness he was a solid 3rd and had forward momentum. I just saw Rombauer's previous races and thought he had a good closing kick. He looked like a late developer on the improve and he was not up against the strongest field this year. He looked super-fit before the race and just looked ready. The rest of it was just this weird gut feeling that this was his day. :-) No logic behind that! I had the same feeling when Vino Rosso got his Breeder's Cup win so I don't argue with it when it happens. Definitely pace was in his favor, but his Beyer's fig backed up my visual impression. I was so pleased to see him have a big win and hopefully he keeps growing into the potential he just showed. I think Midnight Bourbon will continue to improve (hopefully) too. I like what I've seen from him this year in terms of ability - maybe just needs a bit more maturity. If he doesn't get there this year and doesn't get injured, I think he might be one to watch when he turns 4.

    • @Weekendhandicapper

  • @JL-1123

    I had Rombauer for the win, and also considered Crowded Trade... I figured there was no chance Medina Spirit would go unchallenged, and that the pace up front would set up well for a closer (during the race I thought MS and MB would stay 1-2 the whole way b/c the fractions were relatively light, but my script obviously ended up working). This being said, my $10 win bet and $1 exacta paid just under $180 - this is nice, but pretty disappointing considering we had such a big upset winner. The odds really were out of wack, as you highlighted, so even as a "winner" I was a bit underwhelmed. Hopefully Mattress Mack makes the trip to New York in a couple of weeks...

    What did Mike Smith mean when he said “put my hands down”- did he mean releasing the reins? And like you, I lost a little in this race- I was counting on MS, but luckily at literally the last second I threw in an exacta box of the closers over the favorites, which broke me even! Whew.

    • @Weekendhandicapper
      @Weekendhandicapper  3 года назад +1

      That was a smart way to cover yourself. I am glad you didn't lose money and broke even. We lived to fight another day. I think Mike Smith meant he asked the horse to go and hit the gas pedal and nothing was there. No response! It was an odd performance from that horse.

    • @historyandhorseplaying7374
      @historyandhorseplaying7374 3 года назад +1

      @@Weekendhandicapper I got this explanation from a young lady who rides regularly: apparently the horse responds in different ways to different angles that the rider puts the horse's head at, because the angle determines which vertebrae are "popped". And if you hold the reins and "put your hands down" while holding the reins, it makes the horse's head bend at a certain angle that "pops" (her word) certain vertebrae that causes the horse to widen its stance and "be more effective". In other words, like you said, it would be like opening the throttle up on an engine, allowing maximum amount of O2 to enter at exactly the most efficient rate for combustion.... but even after doing that, under the most ideal conditions, the horse did nothing.

    I think the Midnight Bourbon was the anti Buffett bet plus I listened to about a half dozen analysts that picked Midnight Bourbon that influences people’s betting
    I liked MB and the race played out kinda how I thought with the exception of Concert Tour I’m not a big fan of his but thought he might influence the pace more which he didn’t he was hung out wide through the first part of the race and that was it for him
    More pressure on the front and Rombauer was closer to the front that normal which may have helped him do what he did he had less ground to close into int being closer to the lead
    I think MB and MS faded a little but I think it was more Rombauer just coming hard at the end
    I saw him as a 3 or 4 spot horse not 1 or 2 but he ran awesome nothing in his pp would indicate him to run like he did
    I thought Risk Taking was going to get the aRombauer trip and run well I liked MB and him 1 and 2
    Risk Taking ran bad again I drew a line through the Wood as he took a pebble in the eye and was hoping he would run back like the Withers but no way he did not
    I was leery of the race and did,not bet but a small win on MB and an exacta on MB and RT

    Obviously people saw MB as a good win pick. That’s why his odds were low. The only way his odds would be good, is if they didn’t bet him at short odds, leaving someone else to benefit from those odds. Why would they want his odds to get better if they are not going to benefit? You seem to be from the Yogi Berra school... MB was only bettable if no one was betting him! You’re not likely to be the only one that saw that he had a good shot!

      MB at 5-1 was a good bet. Worth the risk. MB at 5/2 or 3-1 not a good bet and not worth the risk. Sometimes you bet horses that you don't think can win but you can pass it up because the odds are too good to pass up. It sounds weird I know but it works in the long run.
