Karen’s very first note starts on a low E flat, below middle C, displaying her incredible lower register, her “chest voice” that became her signature. She is absolutely one of the greatest vocalist of our time. Keep the Carpenters coming. I love them.
Mad props, indeed, Deep Track Reacts! Richard was all over the duo's arrangements, production, and orchestrating to a level few knew or appreciated! As someone noted above, 'twas Richard who wrote the song with frequent collaborator, John Bettis ("Top of the World," "Goodbye to Love," "Yesterday Once More"). Bettis, from Long Beach, and at 73, still with us, later wrote hits for Michael Jackson ("Human Nature"), Madonna ("Crazy for You"), Jennifer Warnes ("Nights Are Forever"), Ronnie Milsap ("Only One Love in My Life"), and co-wrote the theme song to the '80s sitcom, "Growing Pains," "As Long as We Got Each Other." In 2011, Bettis was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
She was very self conscious, she felt most comfortable behind her drum kit. Definitely a once in a lifetime talent gone to soon but she left us all an amazing gift.
Had she stayed behind the kit, as she'd have liked to, she'd quite likely be with us yet. KC would be 70 now. There are a few videos of her drumming and, when you compare her facial expressions in those to the ones where's she's out front singing, there is no doubt which of the two musical pursuits brought her joy...
@@stevetournay3731 No she wouldn't lol. Just because someone looks happy doesn't mean they are. 🤦 There were so many other factors that played a role in her development of anorexia, her mother's lack of appreciation and affection for her, the publicists/journalists or the media judging her, and the lack of control she had to express herself and being under her brother's shadow all her life. 🤦 if she couldn't accept John Lennon's compliment about her voice, then no amount of her being back behind her drums would have fixed all those problems. Her and her brother also did a lot of touring and public appearances, what makes you think she wouldn't still be venerable to others judgement and suffer media pressure?
@@stevetournay3731 That's what I thought about an hour ago! Jamel called that "her happy place". She didn't get enough "drum time" with focusing on singing and she got despondent over that. Well, it was a contributing factor.
In a world where everyone is looking at you, some kindly and others more often critically, it must be hard to keep in touch with yourself, yes she was loved but she was treated very badly by some too, and it stuck, she deserved so much better.
I see Carpenters and automatically hit the like button, LOL But that lyric "In my own time, nobody knew the pain I was goin thru." Such a prophetic line. :/
Sad words for sure. I remember how upset my friends and I when we found out when she died. 1983, I was helping plan our 10 year high school reunion. Shocked about her. BAck then we didn't hear about stars problems until they got arrested or died. She was too good for this cruel world.
There's a ton of that prophetic-sounding stuff in the lyrics they recorded...whether or not Richard and John (Bettis) wrote a particular song. This one, Goodbye To Love, Eve, A Song For You and a slew more. I remember one afternoon in 1983 coming through the front door of my folks' house, and my younger brother (who is a musician himself now), sitting on the couch, blurting out "Karen Carpenter died"...I wouldn't have been any more shocked if instead he'd walked over and punched me...
Her death probably saved many many more lies. 😭 I don't think anorexia nervosa was talked about much before her passing. So tragic. I just loved her so much when I was a kid, I just wanted to sing just like her.
That's an interesting one because the lyric dates to the '40s...written as a Christmas poem by Frank Pooler, and set to music by Richard Carpenter in 1970. Carpenters released it as a single, then later on (1978) it was on their first of two Christmas albums, "Christmas Portrait". It is lovely indeed.

Her voice is utterly angelic. I imagine her up there at God's right hand, welcoming new arrivals with a song, and everything is as you expected it to be from then on. Perfection in vocals, and i'm a metalhead!
She closed her eyes in this studio performance . Like you said when they close their eyes they are no longer there but in that place where the music takes you ❤️

Isn't her voice ANGELIC. She's one that when I first heard her, I fell in Love with her. There's not many voices like that, but she's one. I LOVE YOU KAREN !!!!!
What a sweet and gentle and beautiful soul. Such an amazing gift she gave the world, if only the world could have been a little more forgiving and a little less cruel.
Her voice is pure lovely. One if the things that makes the Caroenters songs so so so beautiful, is 1. Her voice, best female voice ever. 2. Her pitch, her range; so, she goes from low to high in one sentence, or two sentences, and the human mind is keyed to react to that. 3. The harmonies and arrangement. 4. These songs obviously mean something to her and them. So there is heartfelt feeling to the lyrics, and how they are sung. 5. The songs deal with melancholia, loneliness, despair, struggle, etc. And because we all experience these things, it's so easy to relate to these issues, so it touches our hearts. All this, and more, makes the songs just... brilliant. I've never heard a female voice like this, ever. Their songs are timeless.
I've been listening to the Carpenters since 1971...and this song gets to me everytime I hear it. It's one of my top 5 favorites by them. Just an astounding song.
Karen, the greatest female voice of all time, she sang with real emotion, just a super natural talent. I was lucky enough to grow up with her voice, i miss her so much. No need for tacky trashy videos like these days, real music, real talent.
They never had to do retakes Karen got the first time! Karen had perfect pitch. What you hear is what you get. Auto-tuned wasn’t invented and there was no need. Love you Karen, RIP
Jamel, your afterthoughts made a enlightened connection between the song lyrics and overcoming the unavoidable personal damage which we all must endure. You spoke wise words, my friend. All the best to you and yours!
We all try to define Karen’s voice because it touches us all so deeply, from note one...it’s like we stop in utter fascination & amazement saying “what is this I’m hearing?!?” Tone, inflection, diction, pitch....strong, solid, soft ....perfection....guess angelic is best
I remember listening to this song and thinking, "whatever studio drummer the Carpenters had was really good." I felt like I kept an idiot when I found out who the drummer was.
I'm going to out myself on how old I am, but the Carpenters were my first concert ever. I was six years old and my parents were gifted the tickets by a doctor my mother worked for. The parallels between the lyrics of this song and her fight against the demons that plagued her are amazing. "In my own time, nobody knew the pain I was goin' through"... It's like she was giving a peek into her thoughts. When she sings the line "maybe things will be alright", the curse of hindsight is biting because, as we now know, they would not be alright. She was never able to "throw (her) sadness away" and move on with her happiness. The most prophetic lyric? "Free as a song, singin' forever". When she died, she was freed from her pain and now lives forever in her songs. What a tormented, but beautiful, soul! I think that Karen's voice is probably the most elegant instrument that has ever been played, and I will mourn its loss until "Stars fall down from the sky" and It's "Yesterday once more". Richard was is a genius. The way he arranged and orchestrated his music to complement Karen's songs was simply amazing!!!
Absolutely 😎 Richard is a Musical Genius
Richard was great Karen was extrodinary and without her there was no carpenters!!
Plus many of the harmonies were sinply multiple layers of Karen and Richards own voices, so a perfect match and no need to hire background singers.
Karen's performance on the drums in this song is superb.
It hurts me so much when she says, “in my own time nobody knew the pain I was going through.”
I got chills from the first note she sang. What a tragic loss.
I get chills, too! And teary eyes to boot!
Her voice has an element of melancholy that goes straight to the heart.
Also shout out to Richard for orchestrating and writing these great songs.
Deep Track Reacts Dont forget to give a shout out to the great John Bettis...
Most of their songs were from outside songwriters but this is a Carpenter/Bettis original, with great guitar work from Tony Peluso.

The saddest thing is I don't think she appreciated what a wonderful gift she was to the world. We know she was more than a voice but, she didn't.
