I just bent one of mine on my last trip to Ouray CO after a downpour with hail. I was able to straighten it out to work but had to disassemble it to roll the awning up. I ordered the poles from Amazon and got everything assembled. I tried cutting a little above center but the gap was too wide. I ended up measuring the pole with calipers and transferred the measurement to the tee and cut a little above that and with a little filing it snaps in like it should. Great info. Replacement poles are difficult to find, ARB notified me when they were in stock and 4 days later they were all gone.
Great modification. just completed that mod for my teardrop which is a bushwacker headed to overland expo East and wanted to make sure that I had enough support when I used the awning room. thanks again! great ideas coming from you guys!
@@daveinohio9383 thank you very much. The side arm supports are just one part of the system we have created to improve the straight pull awnings. Stay tuned for more videos

That's awesome, glad it helped. We have a new mod coming out soon that will keep the water from collecting on the roof. It will be a must do .od for awning owners!
I used your videos and modified my room almost exactly as you have and am sitting in it right now. Love it. I don’t have a sewing machine so what I did was use strait pins to create the pocket around the bungee cord and used P6000 glue versus sewing and glued the area from the straight pins to the edge of the cut line. I probably has about 3/4inch material I kept for glueing. Once the glue was dried, I pulled the straight pins out. Of course you have to be careful that you don’t let the glue get into the bungee cord pocket area. Worked great. You can see minor discoloration where the glue seeped through but it is minor in my mind. Seals up tight to the camper and no bugs. I will try to send a photo but haven’t figured that out yet.
Glad it was a help to you. Just remember to drop a corner if your expecting rain and add additional tiedowns on the side arms if there is going to be a big wind. We also use a paint pole with a large softball sized tennis ball on the end to support the center of the roof. That way water runs off better and I have enough headroom to stand up!
Genius! Living off the grid ourselves, we are constantly having to come up with alternative ways of doing things so we really appreciate it when other people are able to think outside the box and give us additional ideas that we can use! Two heads are better than one, three better than two, etc! Ha! Also, the mod you made to attach the room to the camper is amazing! I wish my husband or I could sew! 😅 I hot glue gun everything! 🤣 It might hold together for a minute or two...🤔🤣
Thanks also, great idea, I've already ordered two extenders and will do exactly what you said before the damage in question happens to me. Big thanks again.
Glad it helped. Use cation using just the side arm supports if it rains. We have video coming out with a mod to prevent water from collecting on the roof. It will be out soon. I feel its a must do to prevent Awning Anxiety when there is a chance of rain.
Very useful indeed, really appreciate it. I'm off to the west coast of Ireland in 2 weeks and I dare say it'll be a bit windy!! Thanks for your hard work.
@@adventuresofthememorymakers we are doing the Wild Atlantic Way, a route covering the west coast, I'm unsure of those locations. Were England we visited Scotland last year it was great, thoroughly recommend it.USA is on the bucket list, but it's so vast I simply wouldn't know where to start.
Watched this video yesterday and then went to Lowe’s and bought the extended poles and fittings. On vacation at Bull Shoals in Arkansas so I can’t cut the fittings. I am using the one with a tennis ball inside the room. Great mod and thank you so much for this idea. We have had several thunder storms and one of my poles on the arbor room has bowed. Won’t know if it will retract yet, so may have to remove and order another one. They show out of stock, arggg, or I would have one waiting at home when I get back. I have had water in the room so I am hoping I can get that figured out soon because I love this room and my teardrop but that has been my biggest frustration so far. 😢
Totally understand your frustratiob. Please keep in mind that when the Australians designged these awnings and rooms they were just shelter from the sun. We get them here in the states and we expect them to be 3 season rooms. We have created several mods to help them handle the weather better but at the end of the day they are still tent rooms.
I do understand that. Probably better than my partner does. LOL I think I need to raise my arb awning a bit so that the bottom sides are a little higher to help keep the water out. It’s even more of an issue when you have to lower a side but I started using bungee cords across the top on the hooks and then roll some of the bulk up from the inside a clip with clothes pins to the bungee straps. That has certainly helped on the last two rains. Now to figure out how to raise the entire tarp up a few inches. My trailer is low. I have my thinking cap on!! Thanks for your reply. I would love to do more of the mods you have done, but I don’t have the tools or the capabilities that you have.
Awesome mod! Thank you. I put together a pair of poles as instructed. I did away with the screws since the t connector slips on perfect with a few taps of a hammer and is very snug. I also had to file down the inner pvc pipe for it to fit the top pole, now it clicks in like you showed. Thanks!
Good deal you can also use them if you drop a corner If You're Expecting rain. Just shorten up the sidearm supports. I just picked it picked up a big box full of the long arm paint poles last night
Excellent advice and solution, a big time thanks for sharing. This is now my next diy project. Do you have any ideas or tips for rain proofing the side walls and zippers?
Thank you for watching. The poles make a huge difference. Not much you can do for the exposed zippers that I know of. The rooms we are getting today have been updated and the zippers are now covered with a flap of material. I am sure it probably helps but it makes the zippers a bit harder to access. The fabric is waterproofed with silicone but I guess you could use some of the tent waterproofing sprays on it if you wanted to.
@@philipking8426 we have developed our rain retention elimination device system, RRED for short, that works amazingly well. We set owners up with it that come to the shop to get work done. The new version of the system also holds the ceiling of the room up off your head as well. We've just started setting owners up with that version.

Do you have some cleaver tricks for the Velcro also? For us the awning is three years old and the Velcro just do not work any more - slight wind and they are open... Think its also issue for all the owners who use their gear much like us :)
Yes, typically when velcro fails to work it is because the loop part if it breaks down. The hook section or the stiffer prickly part of velcro tends to last much long. If you just remove and replace the loop section you will be good as new. When I do projects with velcro, like our wing walls, I always put the loop part on the side where it will be easiest to change knowing at some point in time it will break down and no longer latch onto the hook side.

If you have to make mods than the design sucks. I was looking into one of these but apparently they don't like wind and aren't really that sturdy. I think I will be looking at a 180 degree awning with a room as some of those can take winds up to 30 MPH.
