    321 avg, 212 hits, 32 hrs, 39 stolen bases and 119 runs...I mean, he should've won 2011 AL MVP that season..Verlander was great that year but Ellsbury numbers were staggering. Shame injuries derailed this elite player.

    not really familiar with baseball and it's rules, but on that last steal while elisbury is about 6 ft. past 1st base and ready to start running to try to steal 2nd, wouldn't it make sense for the pitcher to throw to 1st to tag out elisbury? It might look easier on the slow-mo replay and perhaps elisbury is quick enough to tag up again but he just seems so far away from the cushion... forgive my ignorance if i'm missing on something, just getting to enjoy this sport since recently. you know.... european ^__^

      perhaps in hindsight, however, the runner acknowledged pretty much that the next throw by the pitcher was going to be a pitch. He, therefore, went for 2nd base. It also depends on what the ball/strike count is. It's worth stealing a base if it's full count, or close to it with 2 outs. :) It has taken most of my childhood and part of my adulthood to fully understand baseball. It is the best sport in the world to me.

    • @WilliamTyndale1
      @WilliamTyndale1 9 лет назад +1

      Alejandro Novo You have just caught on to the understanding of the cat and mouse game that is stealing bases. The base runner can lead off as far as he dares, and the pitcher can try to "pick him off" the base. Any base, whether first, second or third.
      The thing is the pitcher must step off the pitching rubber (place his foot behind the rubber as opposed to in front of it in the groove) in order to make a move toward the base the runner is at. Otherwise, should he throw toward the runner with his foot still in front of the rubber, it is a "balk" and the runner gets to advance a base.
      Pitchers work on increasing the deception of their moves to the base to try to confuse the runners so they can't tell if they will be delivering the ball to the batter at the plate or coming over with a throw trying to pick them off. The batter tries to time his "jump", that initial propulsion toward the base like a sprinter out of the starting block, so as to get as far toward the base of destination as possible thus giving him a better shot at stealing the base.
      For the base runner, it's all about reading the mannerisms of the particular pitcher and getting a good lead and not getting picked off and picking a good count to run on (minimizing the possibility of a "pitch out"--- a designed fastball way high and outside to the hitter the catcher catches as hes standing up thereby giving him the maximum potential to get off a good throw to throw the would-be base stealer out) and getting a good jump.
      Conversely, the pitcher wants to minimize the baserunner's chances at stealing the base by throwing over to the base to keep him close (as you observed in your comment) or "pitching out" if he thinks the runner will be going. All these things can distract a pitcher, however, and often they help the hitter if the pitcher (being distracted by the baserunner and not focusing enough on the hitter) should hang a pitch in the strikezone where the batter can really hammer it. Lot of strategy going on all over the place in baseball. Some disparage it for being a "slow" game, but generally these same people do not appreciate the chessmatch-like qualities that go into virtually every pitch.
      In the stolen bases seen in this vid, it is apparent that Ellsbury was allowed too big of a lead and also stole these bases on good pitches to steal on, but the catcher also made some pretty mediocre throws. A combination of factors all going Ellsbury's way--- skill both in how he ran the bases and also in exploiting the opponent's weaknesses.

      ***** that was simply awesome. really appreciate the explanation. glad not to be too far off the track too. we europeans like to always fill our mouths with the same old song about american sports being a rip-off, mainly rugby-football and cricket-baseball and how yours is merely a simplified version for dummies. not just unfair but dead wrong. appreciating the skill involved in all of them and with some "showbiz" reservations aside, I find yours way more entertaining, easy to follow and with way more fascinating history and heroes to relate to. Being the Spaniard that I am though, I can never forgive having our beloved football demoted to "soccer" (something you pick your 12 year old daughter from), but that's another story haha. thanks bro.

      Alejandro Novo Your quite welcome!
      And my soccer-playing daughter is only eleven as of yet LOL
      You'll actually have to blame the Brits for the term from what I hear: www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/06/the-origin-of-the-word-soccer/
      I have gained appreciation for the sport over the past few years, definitely a lot more skill and ball-handling than many USA sports fans give it credit for though the sport is rapidly gaining in popularity over here.
      My five-year-old son absolutely dominated his division this year scoring about five goals a game lol The thought has crossed my mind if there was a way to move overseas to get him the training he needs because he definitely shows great aptitude for the sport but where I live few people really teach the finer points or enforce the discipline needed to mold elite athletes. Then again he said he likes baseball best lol so he would get better training for that over here.
      Glad to hear back from you, thanks for your thoughtful comment!
