      Even better: in the 2004 ALCS, Game 4, Dave Roberts was the pinch-runner. Everybody knew he was told to steal second...and the Yankees couldn't prevent it.

      This is one of the toughest plays for an umpire. He has to call
      1) the pitch
      2) possible catcher's interference
      3) possible batter's interference
      4) a balk if the pitcher speeds up his motion
      5) out or safe

    No argument, Ellsbury went off the cliff when the Yankees got him, and even in Boston he was brittle. His MVP runner-up season of '11 was flanked by 74 games in 2010 and 18 in 2012. But what an exciting player at his best. "If only he'd stayed healthy..." might end up being the view of posterity. He leaves some great highlights: this home steal, escaping the rundown in the '13 WS, his offensive and defensive heroics as a late call-up in the '07 WS.

      @TRK516 stealing home doesn't make you a good player. He really fell off the map when he went to NY. I liked Derek Jeter because he was a good player. Same way many people liked David Ortiz. No Red Sox fan is happy to see a player leave for the Yanks. Doesn't change the fact that he never ended up being all that good in NY

    Ellsbury is one of the fastest guys in the Majors and is well known for stealing bases. That said, stealing home is almost unheard of. You're right, it is a pretty desperate play all things considered. Basically, Ellsbury stole home because he could. He took a big lead off of third base, took advantage of the fact that left-handed pitchers have their back to third base, and waited for the pitcher to start a long wind-up pitching motion so he would have enough time to make the run.

  • @WinstonTheFrog
    @WinstonTheFrog 10 лет назад +1

    Come on bro, nobody pitches from the stretch with bases loaded. Besides the fact that there's virtually no downside with the wind up (the above video exemplifying such risk), it often calms down the pitcher's nerves by putting them in a more comfortable mindset, which helps when you've fucked up enough to load the bases in the first place. A lot of pitchers will even pitch from the wind up with runners on first and second, just to help them out mentally.

  • @csamson11
    @csamson11 10 лет назад

    It'd be allowed sure, but to see it actually happen (a full swing) would be very rare. When a runner is heading home and the batter is swinging away, this poses a huge chance of injury for said runner. Most the time if a runner is going home and the batter is in the box actually looking to make contact, it'll be nothing more than a bunt, which is called a squeeze bunt. If the batter is swinging away, I'm sure there would be big problems between the runner and batter after the fact.

  • @VictorMinchihLee
    @VictorMinchihLee 11 лет назад

    Yes, but there are at least two potential problems with this: 1) there is a risk of the bat hitting the runner; and 2) if the hitter connects with a line drive that is caught, a double play is possible.

    So this must be where Vanderbilt got the idea from when they pulled off a triple steal in the SEC tournament against Florida last year. It's almost the exact same scenario too. Bases Loaded, 2 outs and with a 1 run lead. Of course, this was in the fifth, while Vandy pulled off their heist in the 9th. Still, this is a impressive and gutsy call for Boston to try this.

  • @erad67
    @erad67 10 лет назад

    Not really. Pitchers tend to watch runners on 2nd & 3rd closely. Stealing home is so rare it's common to completely ignore runners on 3rd, as happened here.

    • @MrLandscraper
      @MrLandscraper 10 лет назад +4

      No..... he wasn't offended, that would require emotion. It's because it was J.D. Drew who had the emotion of a turtle yet was a very good, above average player when on the field. That's because unless he was feeling 110% he would sometimes take himself out of the lineup then go 4 for 5 each of the next 3 nights.
      He was the most frustrating player (one of) in Red Sox history. Frustrating because, like I said, one day he could look like fred lynn in the outfield and 3 days later he's got a hang nail. A fucking asteroid could have slammed into home plate instead of Ells and he would have had the same reaction. TRUST ME..... any Red Sox fan will tell you the exact same thing!

    And also is this runner know for stealing? It takes skill to steal home, especially in this situation.
