"My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the armies of the North, General of the Felix legions, Loyal servant to the true Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Father to a murdered son, Husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next"

Russell Crowe hated this line and tried to improvise his own version multiple times. Eventually the take containing the originally scripted line was used, but he still had this to say; "It was shit. Some apparent plot holes were resolved with added scenes from the extended edition. For instance, it's revealed in dialog that Quintas apparently sent out some scouts to see why the soldiers who were ordered to execute Maximus hadn't returned, and they reported what they saw which Quintas dismissed as the aftermath of a barbarian raid. It's also implied that he knew or at least suspected that Maximus was still alive, but he kept the knowledge to himself and later let his scouts wrongly take the blame for not reporting it and was forced by Commodus to order their execution as a test of his loyalty.
Yea this leads a lot into Quintus siding with Maximus at the very end fight
Half-swording is actually a viable strategy and I don't doubt that as a warrior he knows what he's doing. So yeah grabbing the sword actually would work. I suggest the video by Skallagrim about it

There's videos on RUclips of guys demonstrating a technique called half swording where you grab the blade halfway down to get more control and leverage to either stab with like a spear or even swing like a hammer. Depending on the style of blade the sharpness varies greatly and what parts of the sword were sharp depends on what it was used for.
REAVER 14 yea I absolutely believe those swords wouldn't be that sharp. After how many battles and away from supplies.
@@Davidsworldtravels Blades generally were very well kept, since a soldier's life honestly depended on it. It's not a matter of replacing, but more of sharpening the edge on stones. Roman armies had massive logistical elements with them. As for safely holding the blade, a solid grip with the edge in one of the folds of your hand/fingers, you can easily and safely half-sword and murder stroke.
Yeah it was literally a way of fighting for knights aswell with far sharper thinner blades. As the other guy said firm folded grip you can do whatever and literally hammer someone to death w the pommel if you wanted (obv not w the roman sword but ye)
Not to mention the Roman (Spanish) sword was a stabbing weapon.

Correction: Quintus is still alive because he didn't take responsibility for the error. It's in the extended edition.
I I did'nt know that but assumed that's was what happened. Thanks for the info.

well the soldiers under him that waited for the others to return clearly did not send the message further up the chain. or they decided. shit this emperor is fucking crazy, if we tell him they never returned he might punish us, because he is a horrible emperor.
Knowing the actual power the Praetorian Guard had, it never crossed my mind.
You missed the biggest battle scene sin of them all: Roman soldiers would *never* randomly break ranks & pair off with some opponent in a battle, in fact no organised army of any time period did that. If you did that you'd be dead in seconds when their buddies flank you. It's such a ridiculous movie trope.
"historically accurate" battles aren't as exciting as how hollywood does them
@@MrAlittleofeverythin I think it's possible, especially with the way the Romans periodically rotated their ranks to bring fresh soldiers to the fore. And things get really animated after the route.
@@aidanjt that's a lot of money on extras unless they cgi them in and it would probably a good chunk of filming just to do those battles
I totally agree. HBO's "Rome" talked about not breaking rank, so did the movie 300. I understand that a busted up fight scene looks cooler, but yeah, should have got a sin for historical inaccuracy.
They did sometimes. Read De Bello Gallico
Now don't forget : -1000 sins for soundtrack, which is awesome.
I think it's not just the word 'surgeon' , it's the whole english language
They're arguing that the word is inappropriate, not the language but they are actually wrong. @@Gobtikthey weren't called surgeons. Medicus would be correct.
I literally told someone last month that Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator reminded me of Rufus Sewell 😆

There is actually a really good deleted scene that explains #71. I really wish they had left it in because the film really doesn't help Quintus out very much. I always wondered if there was more to him because it seems like there should be. Turns out there was!
-1 sin: Rufus Sewell in "The Man In The High Castle". Check. And. Mate.
-1 sin: Of course the lanista (gladiator owner) talks trash during purchase to drive the price down, but it's only natural to do the pepp talk later. Also, gladiators were well taken care of. Good food, spa treatment and so on.
-1 sin: The lanista wants a return on his investment (with profit) so he can't just grant Maximus freedom like it's no big deal.
-1 sin: There are rules to these fights so one on one fights are par for the course instead of several ganging up on one guy.
+1 sin: No naval battles in the Colosseum. If James Cameron had directed it you'd be damn sure those would've been on screen with several underwater scenes. For symbolism or something...
I was hoping this day would never come.

“ Do you remember Rufus Sewell?” Never forgot him. He was brilliant in Man in the High Castle.
He was great in Dark City and wasn't the villain.
Movie Sin Timer: 1:40
Me: holy shit! Its Dumbledore from the first two movies!!
Just a few things that I thought you should take off.
1. Those were members of the praetorian guard, the personal bodyguards of the emperor of Rome that were sent for Maximus's execution. They are some the best soldiers in the entire Roman military, so those weren't just 4 nobody's.
2. Both Qintus and Commodus have known Maximus for years. One of them more than likely told the soldiers where to go.
3. Yes, none of the soldiers survived the execution but no one probably wanted to tell Commodus that he escaped because if they did then they would probably get executed themselves. The fact that they lied shows they don't have any actual loyalty to Commodus that they only serve themselves.
I still enjoy the moment the chariot falls over in the arena and you see the gas tanks in the cart.
If it hasn't been said before, holding a sword by the blade and hitting someone with the hilt/pommel was a real thing. I'm not sure why, but you can look it up.
2:51 no it does not. In fact there were historical techniques that involved gripping a sword by its blade and striking with the pommel or guard.
Barehanded?
@@Jbot123 Yes. If you grip a blade tight enough you will not cut your hand when using it to bludgeon someone. Movement of the blade is the thing to avoid. Half-swording is a thing, but I do not recommend doing it on a lark to test it out, just look up a video.
@@Jbot123 usually You would wear gloves on the battlefield, but it is possible without them. The trick is to either Grab it by the flat without touching the edge, or Grab it tightly, so that it doesnt move and slice. As soon as it starts moving a bit, it draws blood and gets slippery, which will make it move even more and it might slice right through your hand. But usually that shouldnt happen, especially with gladiuses, which werent tbe sharpest swords in the first place.
The suckling bit had me in stitches. Thanks for a much needed day brightener Cinema Sins!
Sin 28, that technique of holding the sword by the blade to use it as a blunt weapon was an actual thing.
another sin is, in the scene when Comodus kills his father, where are the pretorian soldiers? they're just napping around or what? that scene is just like the other one in the movie Blade Runner(1982) when Roy easily kills Tyrell with no problem and with no high-powered weapon soldiers to avoid it.
Well even though
this part is fiction anyway it is still a son visiting a father. The Praetorian Guard would have no reason to believe that the emperor is in danger. Also it's not like they actually stared at the emperor 24/7. They would have been outside of his tent making sure nobody enters that shouldn't be in there and ready to be called upon by the emperor if needed. Plus you have to remember that this was a tent most likely surrounded by guards in the middle of an army camp after the enemy was defeated. There would be no reason to suspect anything could happen. Again he was his son, if it was anybody else I would have been there with you in making this a sin, as they would have accompanied the visitor inside.
Commodus didn't kill his father. Aurelius died of natural causes. The two were actually close.
@@crystalward1444 If im not mistaken the real Aurelius made Commodus joint king/co-king(dunno how to say it) when he was 16 in real life, a dual monarchy and Aurelius was AGAINST the idea of handing power to the senate and he himself restored hereditary succession, sorry for bad english.

Maximus' proof that the emperor was slain was that Commodus told him that he was to be named emperor, whereas Maximus knew from his previous conversation with Marcus Aurelius (that Commodus didn't know about) that he didn't intend to let Commodus rule. So take that, CinemaSins!
15: Uh, I'm pretty sure that's red wine. It was the closest thing to sterile they had to wash their hands in.
