You did not mention that the portrait mode on the Xr only works with people in comparison to the 8plus which is not limited to only human faces. That may be important to people like myself.
But you don't have variable aperture in the old iphone generation... It's just a software thing and they should activate it also on the old a11 cpu iphone but they don't... I hate apple

Unchained Spirit however on the 8 plus portrait mode is unfortunately limited to the back cameras and not on the front which saddens me as an 8 Plus user but I think that may very well be this phones only flaw

The 8+ is the last smartphone in its category..so its well built and improved from his past models...am happy to keep my 8+ for a couple of years..3 GB of RAM is still strong for iOS.

Just purchased an 8+ after watching this video. Coming from a slowly dying LG G6(fingerprint sensor stopped working, battery is going bad, tired of burn in on the screen), that I bought because the screen cracked on my iPhone 6 and I wanted to try the android side of things. Just realized I prefer iOS, but was unsure whether to buy an 8 plus, or XR. I I can live without portrait selfies, as selfies aren't a big thing for me, honestly, and I'm not really worried if the main camera isn't the best. Mostly though, I prefer the fingerprint sensor, even if the 8 plus doesn't look as sleek as these new all screen phones, it at least is functionally solid and is all around great device.

I came from a 7 Plus to a XR, no complaints at all about the screen.
I own the XR and my wife has the 8 Plus. The biggest difference for me is that videos on the XR are smaller despite bing a bigger screen due to how Apple puts black pillars on the left and right of the screen to compensate for the notch. You can zoom the video if you want, but then you're purposely removing video content so that the video will fit the screen. So videos are better on the Plus. Also Safari is far more readable on the Plus due to the wider aspect ratio of the screen. The XR is very skinny and thus causes the text in Safari to shrink and Apple still doesn't let you manually adjust font sizes.

You would have the same issue without a notch, as the screens are wider than 16:9 these days.

Ok so for all the people saying it’s a downgrade from the 8 plus to the XR because of the LCD display, 3D Touch, Fingerprint sensor and the camera then you haven’t seen the phone or used is it I used for 5 minutes the display was amazing colors on it were sharp and nice and you can check out the video were they compared the iPhone XR display with a 1080p one everyone said the XR was the better display let’s not forget we are talking about Apple here they know how to make things so that’s the display let’s talk about the camera It’s a one lens camera sure it has advantages and disadvantages For the advantages The One lens portrait mode will not tell you to keep backing up or moving forward because it’s all done by system and it’s also a wider lens camera even in portrait the only thing you are missing is the 2x zoom on the iPhone 8 Plus which nobody used also you are getting the same camera on the Xs max front and back so it’s an upgrade, For 3D Touch everyone knows it was annoying and no one used it because it was ass whenever you were on the control panel you had to forcefully press on the screen for the volume or brightness, For the fingerprint sensor 97% said that Face ID is way faster and more secure for example If someone puts the phone In front of your face while sleeping the phone will never turn on as it requires attention for it to turn on but on Touch ID I can easily hold your finger and open your phone also you are getting a better battery, better size but a bigger screen, full display and a A12 bionic chip all am saying is on paper the phone may seem like a downgrade but when you use it it’s an amazing premium feeling Phone and for the record I don’t own any of these so I have no reason to hate they are both amazing devices but am pointing out what people don’t see sorry for the long comment but my point is for the average consumer like most people the XR will be just perfect

i was so sure i will buy the the iPhone 8 plus after having my iPhone 6s plus for three years, but I saw the XR in the shop, and I really liked it, it feels new, thin and smaller, the display is just fine for me, and I compared it to the XS, and I could not feel any need to spend 300 euros more for an OLED Display. The camera was amazing, you don't see any differences to the XS or XS Max , you really need to spend minutes to find the differences. The only problem is 3D touch, I learned really to love it, but I am sure apple will have software updates bringing back this feature

My Iphone 6s plus had just an accident and my insurance company paid a for a new one.... so I guess I will stick with it two more years. Battery life will suck a little bit and camera, but it still a decent phone...I will wait for a really a great innovation before upgrading
The XR’s A12 Bionic chip allows it to be given more software updates in the future, meaning that the iPhone 8+ will stop supporting sooner software and the XR will still last a little longer.
🤷♂️ difference between A11 isn't that big. for example iOS 13 which is releasing this year is not supported by iPhone 5s (A7 chip). 6 and 6 Plus have newer cpu than 5s - Apple A8, but still those are not getting iOS 13 update. so Apple might do the same thing with A11 and A12 chips in the future.

The XR design is the future and the 8plus is from 2014 design. But remember this the XR is not a flagship phone and people will laugh at you with a 720p 330 PPI in late 2018.
save your money and buy the iphone XS series way better and resale value is extremely high.

I upgraded from the 8+ to the XR and just like it better. The only place i notice a “lower resolution” is apps that haven’t been updated yet which has gotten a lot better over the time being. I like the newer look of the XR it felt new and exciting where as when I got the 8+ it felt like a bigger faster iphone 6 that I had previously.
the XR is gonna be a new experience that you’ll enjoy more and appreciate more. The 8 + was a great phone but just got boring immediately when the X came out.

@@BC08 You are aware some people have enough common sense to prioritize quality rather than a design. And as someone who's gone from a 6 to an 8 plus, I prefer the bigger phone.
8+. I have one and it is basically in brand new condition. I put A tempered glass right out the box from Apple and had a back protective glass installed as well. The battery life still lasts around 13-14 hrs and is just brilliant. No bugs, and super reliable.
I finally got a full time job and I'm debating on the 8 plus or xr. I want to save for the x max but i feel that isnt worth it. Trying to join Apple from android

I would get the 8 plus. Maybe the iPhone XR has newer chipset, will be supported for a year longer, it has the notch, but the iPhone 8 Plus has better cameras, its screen resolution is wayy better than XR’s, and it has the good old home button.

@@mr.ditziiiiii116 I bought iPhone Xr. Is a good deal. It doesn't really bother me that it doesn't have 3D touch (I never really used it). And the resolution and pixel density complain I think you may notice something if you had an Oled phone before. But if You upgrade from an iPhone 6, 7, 8, you won't see any difference.

Hey I retract my statement after getting the Xr in using it I have to admit the Xr it’s a pretty goddamn good phone it beats the iPhone 8 Plus and it’s a hard thing for me to say because I love the 8 plus but the Xr Battery life and the screen resolution surprisingly is really good

Thanks so much for this review. I was considering the upgrade. My daughter passed her 8 Plus down to me a little over a year ago and I think I would surely miss the home button!
I traded in the 8+ for XR, really like the XR, doesn't feel as big and bulky, XR seems much faster to me and the battery life is a lot better imho, worth the upgrade to me for sure.

Played with both extensively today. For my hands the 8+ was just too big. I kept almost dropping it. The XR is not without that issue somewhat as well, but overall just felt better in my hand. Also interestingly found that running Microsoft Word on all models of the 7 or 8 caused the phones to get QUITE warm. The XR only got slightly warm when I did same test. I also really like the gesture navigation and am ready to leave the button behind I think. That design just looks archaic to me now. And despite what I anticipated beforehand, the notch doesn’t bother me in the least. So for me, the XR is the clear winner. I just wish all these phones didn’t cost so much. If the mid range models were about $100 cheaper it would be more reasonable I think. The upper oled X's need to come down even more though. They should top out at $800. No phone should cost over a thousand bucks...that’s just ridiculous.
The iPhone 8+ is as well, way to big for my hand, and popsockets don't help.
8 plus is far better for reading text because has a wider screen and the letters are bigger

128g is a no brainer with the XR.

Honestly Saki you're unique.....no one and I mean no one gives a more sincere review than you. I can come in here and calm down and look at iPhones and not get into arguments. I like the 8+...I've always said that if I had to get an iPhone it would be the one and now it's cheaper.....here's the irony you guys have jsut a 50 dollar difference...while here it's about 200 dollars cheaper and I get the traditional iPhone design which I happen to like alot. It has the same chip as my iPad 6th gen which I bought this year and it's fast no doubt about it. Not a fan of Face ID....I prefer fingerprint scanner. Next to each other they look the same size....screenwise....and I ove the display on the 8+ I would get that one...at the end of the day it's a flagship smartphone, no compromises. TY Ski

I ordered a 8 plus from amazon and a XR from apple, both renewed but the XR is renewed certified by apple, so....
I don't care about their differences! they're phones at the end of the day, you call and text from them, they both can get apps, and they both have cameras.

I think Xr is the best. Camera, chipset, battery and all. I also got an Iphone 6 to 6plus to 6s+, 7plus and Iphone X.
I think I’ll stick with Xr for now and upgrade soon if Iphone releases a new better phone.

Very informative video; thank you! I was wondering about the differences in the screens and you covered that very thoroughly. I am upgrading from SE (basically the 6s but using the old design). I had been leaning toward the XR but now I am thinking that the 8 Plus is the best choice for me. The transition away from the Home button wasn't covered much here, but I saw how much trouble the lack of a Home button is giving other people, and I don't see a huge advantage in having the taller screen for how I use the phone (reading/watching videos).

some random guy go for the 8 plus for $699 vs the xr at $749.99 they’re both water resistant, fast, but the 8 plus has dual cameras, 3d touch and the perfect screen size. Touch ID on the 8 plus is amazing and far more convenient. Face ID on the XR is great and all but I wouldn’t recommend it . In the mornings if you want to unlock it you gotta put that thing in your face vs picking it up, one touch and boom you can still have your face lying down or whatever. The 8 plus comes with a $9 headphone jack dongle. Not a big deal but come on now. Apple can’t include a cheap accessory in their $749 phone? 8 plus is 1080p HD vs 828 on the xr. Not a big difference but you get the point.

I just upgraded to iPhone XR from iPhone 8 Plus. Battery is a lot better than 8 Plus. Yes the pixels are less but I doubt you can make out the difference if you didn't know the specs. Speed is yet another thing, I'm sorry but yes I do play PubG and the game loads way faster than on iPhone 8 Plus. switching between apps and other functions are faster as well. TBH, I just miss the telephoto lens on my new XR. Other wise its a good upgrade.

Great review and unbiased. Excellent job on pointing out the pros and cons. Because of your review, I upgraded from an iPhone 7 to the iPhone XR. I like the bigger screen and having the more current iPhone model with the aster processor for gaming. It is actually better without the home button and I learned all the new gestures I navigate around the iPhone XR screen in less than 30 minutes. There is no learning curve as some complained about. Clearing things up. IPhone XR is the best choice to go with. Not because I prefer the XR over the 8 Plus, there is just much more stuff you can do with it.
Point #1 Screen Resolution :
Although the iPhone XR is a maximum of 720p over the 8 plus, is still not a noticeable difference unless you look at it super up close where the pixels really look sharper. 720p and 1080p are both nearly the same a hardly noticeable.
Point #2 Build :
Both iPhone XR and 8 Plus are built of aluminum and glass. You have a all screen design versus the 8 plus rectangular screen design. XR will fit more with the next future phones and will end up out performing the iPhone 8 Plus. Both are great phones but that notch won’t kill you, people hate it because they are not used to it.
Point #3 Hardware : IPhone XR has the A-bionic 12 Chip which is much faster than the A-Bionic 11 chip. With the next Neural Engine well make the iPhone XR feel a bit faster. They both have the same ram, but since the iPhone 8 Plus has lower specs than the XR, it won’t use as much making the XR faster.
Overall : People just don’t like the IPhone XR Because of the screen resolution. As I’ve seen both it’s actually nearly impossible to notice a difference and also apple also applies the feature to make it feel like your watching 1080p on the XR to get the most of your XR. XR is not worse in anyway so for
Conclusion : IPhone XR is much better and will fit better for the future.
