Thank god I have support in the anime crowd. 60 seconds in and I'm over here huffing and puffing about how there is NO TRAFFIC when he drives or very little. when hes competing against the other prefectures they shut down the roads or post people up at the end and mid. This is one of the few animes I'll argue for in any situation. at the end of the day this is someone's very personal entertainment from childhood or young adult years.
I think one of the things that wasn't really mentioned (but the end of the video alludes to) is that after Takumi grenaded the Eight-Six in Second Stage, the replacement engine used was a race-spec engine with a redline of over 11,000 (which Bunta acquired by someone who owed him a favor). Having that much more of a power threshold to play with would explain a lot of the advanced techniques being doable, and by Fourth Stage, Ryosuke was footing the bill for all repairs and maintenance to the 86, FD and FC anyway. The moral of the story: sometimes you can throw money at every problem.
also to add: Bunta initially didn't bother adding an 11k rpm tachometer when he did the swap to let Takumi figure out why it wasn't behaving as it should after the fact.

In the manga, the exact image of the engine is actually the 4ag ae101, i.e. the silvertop. But the specs and power the engine makes are way more akin to the formula Atlantic engine. Comparatively, getting a silvertop to rev to 11k is not nearly as feasible. It seems we're both right and wrong :)
Initial D is loosely based on the life of Keiichi Tsuchiya aka The Drift King, with its main character Takumi Fujiwara being based on him, and the AE86 he drifted with in real life . He helped the author of Initial D, Shuichi Shigeno, write the Manga and was also a consultant during the production of the anime. The mountain in the anime is a real mountain in Japan and Keiichi Tsuchiya has drifted on it a thousand times. Even the tofu shop is a real place.
While I'm sure Tsuchiya drifted on Mt. Haruna (the inspiration for Akina), his home course was the Usui Pass that was the home course for Impact Blue. And the tofu shop was a real place. The facade was relocated to a car museum in Ikaho when the tofu shop went out of business. I've driven the road in the early morning at irresponsible speeds, and it's really fun - though the hairpin section has speed bumps now. Usui Pass is comparatively more twisty, and while fun, isn't as well maintained, and can be quite treacherous if the weather isn't perfect (wet roads, branches fallen across the road) - the pass has been closed since September due to landslides...
The cup is meant to reflect the tofu in the water during transport. If the cup spills, the tofu could get damaged. In the US, the cup wouldn't work, but Japan keeps their roads flat, minus the paint strips to prevent drifters in the touges now. The first time Takumi had to use the cup, it splashed everywhere and the cup was dry. The movie also had the implication his father beats him if it spills.

Yet they had the GTR Driver Drifting pretty sure they took out the fuse for Attesa-ETS or much more complicated work. Still cool looking races but at least get the Driving Styles Correct I tried to turn my brain off like a Michael Bay Movie. But it was just Dragonball Evolution Bad.
I used to think the gutter run idea wasnt possible in real life, only to find out it's been done in the WRC before. If you ever think something's not possible, there's probably a rally driver thats done it.
It's very possible, but you still gotta be careful, it will beat up the ball joint, tie rod end, and control arms if done poorly. Or cause immediate part failure
Technically, I've done it when I was at a racing school years back. It wasn't anything spectacular, but essentially I hooked the inside of my tire on the bit of overhang the track had next to the grass. But it was in fact something the instructors told us about.
Reminds me of that time a nascar driver did a wall ride to pass a few cars at the end of a race - he took the outside line, all gas no brakes, sliding on the concrete barrier. Pretty cool that it worked IRL
Interesting that you mention making it loose and flowy, because thats exactly how the 86 was setup for the mountain runs. The car was initially setup for tofu delivery, so it wasn't meant to be fast in that configuration. The whole purpose of the cup was "if the water comes out of the cup, the tofu will likely be damaged". So heavy acceleration, braking, lateral G force, sudden movements and hard drivetrain forces were all a "no no" while Takumi was doing delivery runs.
I live in Japan. The scariest thing I've done here is drive country roads with typhoon-size open gutters. One mistake, and you need a tow truck and probably major suspension work.
I drove a car up and down Irohazaka and I don't remember gutters being that bad. Maybe it wasn't country road enough. Since then, I've driven around the Island of Seychelles and that was absolutely terrifying. They have completely open gutters that are like, 2 or 3 feet deep. The roads are fairly narrow, just wide enough for two cars to pass by each other and they are *incredibly steep* going up and down the mountains (which is literally any road that's not a ring road of the island). I drove one day with a car hire. Afterwards, I used their local "uber" equivalent and enjoyed the trip much more.
@@depremere3991 now they know those gutters don't play. I was in a rental and was terrified of that happening. I signed up for the CDW and incidental, but both clauses stated it didn't cover damage caused by the cavernous gutters.
We have such shitty road maintenance in Finland that the side of the road has in many place work the pavement off least partially and combination with heavy logging trucks using all the space, those areas are stamped rather tight so if i'm in hurry/driving seriously there is several spots i utilize those to go trough corners way faster than i could using the pavement it self. Similarly in couple years after i got my license i also developed driving technique to use inertia to swing the rear out with out using hand brake to drift trough the corners. After 10 years of driving like that, i come across this new thing to me coming from Japan called drifting and i was just confused "isint that just normal serious driving?"... Of course i was limited to what under powered FWD corolla and her extremely heavy rear end could do, so did this mostly on winter, but its funny how everyone were so shocked about gutter cornering and inertia drifts, when that was normal driving to me.
True fans know that everything in Initial D was actually advised by Keiichi Tsuchiya. He was consulted during the creation of Initial D and the story was loosely based on him. It's satisfying too that the clutch kicking real life example was also done by Keiichi in the video. So obviously, everything that happens in Initial D that seems plausible is legitimately possible.
0:30 If I remember right, I don't think the suspension was stock on that car from the get go, its been awhile though so I could be wrong, but when his buddy gets his car he mentions how bad the suspension is.
Indeed the only stock things in the car were the chassis and the dashboard. And maybe the seats. I think those were changed later in the series. It was Bunta's sleeper racing car.

@@Jtw0912 You might be correct about the engine being stock. Ryosuke's plan to beat takumi was to remove the big turbo from his rx7. His theory was the ae86 was fast not because it made lots of power, but because the driver didn't slow down at all. But when takumi took his friend (was it itsuki or iketani) as a passenger he was surprised they were already going so fast when the speedometer began ringing. Stock or not, bunta's mechanic friend surely had a hand in it.
The original engine was stock outside intake and exhaust. Stock hp in this car is 138 and it was stated to be putting out about 150 hp. The second engine is supposed to make about 230-25hp
Glowing red disks happen a lot when you’re left foot braking. One time, I came in at the end of a long rally stage with the disks glowing red. The timing team noted “your disks are red but your brake pads aren’t on fire so you didn’t go fast enough on the stage.”
LOL the editor is a TRUE FAN with the A/B act break bumpers. it always killed me that the VO is so sleepy going into the comercial break "initial.... d" and then when it comes back its like the threatened to fire him during the break and he SCREAMS "INITIALLLLL DDDDDD"

They have a point about the guard rail lighting up like that. Not about the thing they said, but thats pretty high quality for Anime at the time. Season 1 was still in 4:3, so thats a moment you can see how much the animation team cared about cars, apart from the rest of the show.
For a quick correction: When brake fluid boils, it has nothing to do with viscosity. Brake fluid, like most fluid, is incompressible in its liquid form. When you boil it, brake fluid becomes a gas which will compress similar to having air in your brake lines. Any force used to compress a gas is not used to press your brake pads into the rotor. That’s why boiling brake fluid is dangerous.
Hehe kinda funny how they missed the part where the "Ultra Super Late Braking guy" was the arrogant guy in his Silvia Spec-R S15 making fun of Itsuki's Corolla AE85 Levin and Iketani's S13. Then after his fancy late breaking technique got passed by Takumi driving Itsuki's car and using the gutter technique completely blowing their minds. They thought the AE85 did the late breaking technique, quite similar to the super duper braking guy thinking he was being followed by the S13 hehe

While I personally prefer the subtitles, especially because I don't hear all that great anymore, I have two friends with bad enough dyslexia to almost read them but not quite before they change over to the next line, which is super annoying. Back before it was ever dubbed into English... This series taught me how to enjoy Anime while having to read subtitles.. Indeed a skill driver could. With enough practice. And wrecked cars from said practice. But Hey, that one time I pulled it off perfectly without any damage to the car... So its possible.
there is clips of rally drivers doing the exact same thing, the line is basically just a tighter hairpin. and any normal car would be destroyed, my suspension was shot after a quarter second of airtime in my civic, but rally suspension is built to take that. that's why drivers like colin mcrae were able to thrive in rally, those cars are built tough, but also, cars are surprisingly durable when you don't care about them.

the Anime explains that the AE86 panda isnt a stock showroom car his dad was the Drift King so the car is modded and tuned. i also love how they put real world facts of the cars and fun facts in the anime made it a little more based in reality. als also there is a new Series called MFG or MF Ghost you should check it out
The initial spec of the car in part 1 aren't very modified, just some light tuning and a few aftermarket parts, it isn't until Takumi join project d that they start heavily modifying the car, you can see the specs (I think) in the manga and online

6:50 it does work. At least in snow on a gravel road. I've used that technique a few times to get around a corner I've entered way too fast. Dip the front inner into the ditch, catch the rear that's trying to swing out now and slide through it.
Y'all know that Keiichi Tsuchiya, the Drift King himself directly supervised the creation of the original manga and anime, right? And the main character's AE86 is basically just a recreation of Tsuchiya's AE86. Also, DK's AE86 is powered by a 7A-FE engine with a Corolla AE111 cylinder head from the 4A-GE Black Top. Keiichi Tsuchiya's AE86: Engine: Toyota 7A-G 5-valve w/ heads from a Corolla AE111's 4A-GE "black top" engine. Transmission: Tec-Art's T50 w/ carbon clutch Wheels: Work MEISTER CR01 Tires: Goodyear RS Sport 195/50/R15 Basically everything else is either TRD or Tec-Art's parts.
I'm having flashbacks to my worst engine blow. It was a 350 V8 and a rod let loose and smacked the cam. The cam broke in half and fell in the spinning crank! The lifters and pushrods joined the cam in the spinning crank for extra fun. There were 4 broken rods, one out the side of the block, a piston through a cylinder wall, and the oil pan was more holes than oil pan.
I wouldn't be shocked if Adam helped. IDK if he's watched all of it, but didn't he admit to being introduced to drifting by the anime when he was working in a Blockbuster?
@20:53 The reason road racers will, at times, left foot brake while at WOT on a straight is to get temperature into the brakes going into a slow turn after a long straight, not just to play mind games. Race pads are pretty useless when they get cold.
@@INFERNUM95 Races are very good, the star of the show (Datsun 240 Devil Z) is as memorable as the AE86, but the central focus of Wangan Midnight is not the techniques and hype in street racing like Initial D - It's the consequences that come to people who do those street races in the middle of densely populated highways. What leads them to race, their encounters with the Devil Z, and how many ultimately abandon street racing for good after it.
The gutter run doesn't put the wheel in the gutter he actually uses the car twist to clear the gutter and put the wheel on the inner (far inside side) curb of the gutter the bumps are the seams between the sections. It's fully animated out in a few episodes!
idea if you wanna check if the hopping over the gutter trick is possible: get a very small homebuilt "gutter" thats like 4mms deep and paint the inside of it with some paint thats very liquid and if the tire isnt painted afterwards that means it works.
I used to play wreckfest a lot. A few months in, i started watching initial D. One of the techniques i took away from the anime was the gutter technique, really helped on a some of tracks because they use a good amount of "gutter" type inside corners. Rolled my car often during races before i got the hang of it lol, but i got noticeably faster.
The gutter technique absolutely blows me away initial d did it. I grew up in a family that drove very very very hard on the back mountain roads of West Virginia. My late uncle was always the man to beat on them roads. He never was the man had real talent behind the wheel without a doubt. He taught me this gutter technique as a young teen one night we could get a car slowed on some old back roads. We hit 35mph turn in a Mazda 323 running every bit 85-90 mph. He yelled hold on boys to me and my cousin. I thought we were dead. After the turn we were still moving 60 mph. Ive used the trick a few times myself through out the years of raising hell behind the wheel and it works. Without a doubt you tare up shit but it does work and will get you around a sharp turn way faster then you ever should. From watching power lines at night time for headlight glare rev matching auto and manual transmissions to slow down, using the gutter technique, using throttle and brake manipulation to keep a car inline and so much more little tricks like this. This is the stuff that makes a wheelman .
Loved the commentary! Just have a small correction : the reason brakes fade when the fluid boils is not that the fluid loses viscosity (it does get thinner - but that's not a problem, because it still is not compressible), but because it turns into vapor. Being a gas, the vapor is compressible (like a spring), where the fluid is not compressible. You don't need a lot of fluid to boil to inject a lot of vapor into the line - and then it's just like having a lot of air in the line. Even a little air will make the brakes feel "soft" - but a lot of air or vapor in the line will result in the brakes being so soft that they are basically absent - you push the pedal, and it goes right to the floor with no resistance. (and no braking). I have had this happen to me on the track. However, you are not totally out of control - esp. on a manual shifter. You can carefully downshift and let the engine slow you down - perhaps with some damage to the clutch material, but that's better than a crash.
There is a proper rally reference for Irohazaka Jump for the blue MR2. You can find Luis Climent in an Opel Corsa A during the Rally Principe de Asturias in 1990.

"I guess I'll take the wise old man" Brother Bunta is literally the GOAT he's refereed to as the god of racing later on and is why Takumi is so insanely successful because it's revealed in later arcs that the 86 wasn't actually stock at all it was tuned by Bunta to be a ricer and he was one of the best tuners there was. So all the time when everyones like "woah that 86 is insane how can he beat a GTR" it's hinting at the modifications. There's a few other hints before it's explicitly revealed later on. The even more insane part of the story is Bunta doesn't tell Takumi about modding the car for each race, he simply gives him the best tools he needs and Takumi instinctively puts them to use
It's funny about the brake check, but I've actually used that in sim racing sometimes. You get people who are super quick, and follow you around, but don't really know where the brake points are, so what I would do is get on the brake pedal just enough to activate the lights but not put any actual force on it, usually buys me 100 feet, and then you can grow the gap from there, as you break the tow.
i do this on corners you don't need to brake on, i'll tap the brake ever so slightly with my left foot, the brake lights go off, and they lose .300ths in an instant it's especially useful in flatout corners where there's only one good line, either they try and overtake and risk flying off the track, or they sit behind me and lose that time. this also works on midspeed corners where you don't brake, but you let off the gas and rotate the car through, as inexperienced drivers will brake in those corners, so it's plausible for you to be braking. if you fail to sell the fact you're braking, they might call your bluff and that trick will run out. i try to only use it as a last ditch thing before a checkered flag just to throw off their timing enough to guarantee no drama before the finish line.

The real question is, which Initial D dub did you watch? There was TokyoPop and Funimation. The Funimation dub had the Eurobeat soundtrack and more faithful to the anime. Tokyopop was made much earlier, had their own..... interesting soundtrack, and had their own names for the characters.
The Tokyopop dub has so many differences because it was meant to match some western releases of the arcade game, as well as being intended to air on American TV. A lot of the changes were because they didn’t think the music and names would appeal as much to American viewers.
I'm so glad I found the funimation one and not the other one the first time I watched... I feel like I may not have loved the D as much as I do if it had gone the other way.

"Pizza DELIVERY!" Why are you going to deliver pizza at like, 5am to a hotel? It was so bad. I'm glad TP got so much sh*t for their version. What was funny to me is the second season was widely released (via torrent) as initially a Chinese dub with English Subtitles. I took Chinese in high school for a couple years (Mandarin), but I believe this was Cantonese. It was a little odd at first, but I was fine afterwards since I was just reading the subs. My friend from Japan also liked the series after I introduced it to him. When season 2 was being released he visited my dorm to watch it. When the dialogue started he was startled, then confused and said, "They're speaking Chinese!" I said, "yeah. I couldn't find a Japanese version." He smirked and waned a bit then said, "Okay, can we start over? I just listened to it before but now I need to read the subtitles." I said, "Oh yeah...sorry bro. I tried but couldn't find the original Japanese audio, so this is all there is for now." That was quite funny.

I deeply appreciate that they aren't insistent on trying to be so hard nosed that nothing is possible. A lot of the time you watch these types of videos and the "experts" are so big on trying to sound like experts that they can't think outside of strict norms.
I remember in the early 2000s in Sacramento all of the little Japanese street racer rides had Initial D stickers in the window. I remember playing SegaGT and Forza1 and halfway through the game they'd give you this little Toyota hatchback and I'd be like 'this crappy car again?' and you'd do the racing engine upgrade and just DOMINATE the AI racers. Then I saw the show I understood, seeing the cultural impact of this show on street racing before I actually saw the show. Awesome video.

I love cars but never heard Initial D until Donut released a video of the cars on that show. Ever since then, i have started my binge. Im absolutely hooked. Ive always have been about muscle but the show has now grew a love for JDM cars. I have a neighbor thats has a 300zx i want to buy now. It doesn't run but it will my be project!
Initial D is probably *the* anime car guys know about. It’s basically why Eurobeat is a decently popular music genre, and it’s why the AE86 is as well-known and popular as it is. The anime is why the “Tofu Tax” exists.
if you liked Initial D I highly suggest you watch MFG and Wangan Midnight. That 300zx you're talking about is actually one of the first cars seen in Wangan Midnight. You could also have a go at reading the mangas, they sometimes tend to differ from the anime and offer a bit more room for personal interpretation.
Only jump into a project like that if you're 100% committed to the blood, sweat, and tears it will give you. I once wanted to have a miata as a project car, and I ended up hating it just as much as I loved it.
The curb is very good technique. For sharp turning. You are like 3 times more stable when cornering at anything above 50km/home. Bus cutouts, difference between termac and concrete curb hight. And super fun...works great do it every corner i can.

I've done the gutter swipe maneuver in the Angeles Crest Mountains on Hwy 2 north of LA... My dad taught me how to hook and book on dirt roads and it absolutely does work....
0:19 it's called a Scandanavian Flick. What makes it so impressive is that Takumi pulls out off on tarmac. The Scandanavian Flick is mostly for ice, dirt, and gravel. It's mostly a non sealed surface technique.
Noo the black R32 did not need help to stop lol he was trying to take out the other car! He was upset at other dude who took his girl and then she died so he didn’t want to live anymore and wanted to take out dude he was racing. Luckily homie was driving behind during race and saw this was going down so when super tight turn was coming he came around to help so his friend would live because the R32 was trying to “un-alive” him.

6:00 I've had to do this before to stop from wiping out on a sketchy backroad that had a turn that was way sharper than I expected. This 100% works. It's funny to think that if I didn't see this clip way back when I'd probably have wrecked my car out there. Drive safe folks, and learn how to slide. It might just keep you on the road, especially when things get slippery.

Edit: ok so the engine might not actually exist, it seems to be a mashup of the silvertop and the Atlantic. In the manga, the exact image of the engine is actually the 4ag ae101, i.e. the silvertop. But the specs and power the engine makes are way more akin to the formula Atlantic engine. Comparatively, getting a silvertop to rev to 11k is not nearly as feasible.

Shigeno based it on Akira Iida's Tool box Mido-Natto build series aired sometime between 1996 and 1997, He's a fan of ikaten and Option magazine.
Initial D is loosely based on the life of Keiichi Tsuchiya aka The Drift King, with its main character Takumi Fujiwara being based on him, and the AE86 he drifted with in real life . He helped the author of Initial D, Shuichi Shigeno, write the Manga and was also a consultant during the production of the anime. The mountain in the anime is a real mountain in Japan and Keiichi Tsuchiya has drifted on it a thousand times. Even the tofu shop is a real place.
While I'm sure Tsuchiya drifted on Mt. Haruna (the inspiration for Akina), his home course was the Usui Pass that was the home course for Impact Blue. And the tofu shop was a real place. The facade was relocated to a car museum in Ikaho when the tofu shop went out of business. I've driven the road in the early morning at irresponsible speeds, and it's really fun - though the hairpin section has speed bumps now. Usui Pass is comparatively more twisty, and while fun, isn't as well maintained, and can be quite treacherous if the weather isn't perfect (wet roads, branches fallen across the road) - the pass has been closed since September due to landslides...
Yup, that's why all the scenes amd movements of the car are so real and doable. Because of his input, he wanted It to be as realistic as possible.
Only difference is Keiichi used a old skyline when he was takumi age instead of an 86

Was a real place. They tore it down years ago, except for the store front. The store front is in a Initial D museum.
The cup is meant to reflect the tofu in the water during transport. If the cup spills, the tofu could get damaged.
In the US, the cup wouldn't work, but Japan keeps their roads flat, minus the paint strips to prevent drifters in the touges now.
The first time Takumi had to use the cup, it splashed everywhere and the cup was dry. The movie also had the implication his father beats him if it spills.

Still cool looking races but at least get the Driving Styles Correct I tried to turn my brain off like a Michael Bay Movie. But it was just Dragonball Evolution Bad.

I used to think the gutter run idea wasnt possible in real life, only to find out it's been done in the WRC before. If you ever think something's not possible, there's probably a rally driver thats done it.
It's very possible, but you still gotta be careful, it will beat up the ball joint, tie rod end, and control arms if done poorly. Or cause immediate part failure
Technically, I've done it when I was at a racing school years back. It wasn't anything spectacular, but essentially I hooked the inside of my tire on the bit of overhang the track had next to the grass. But it was in fact something the instructors told us about.
A lot of Initial Ds inspiration is based in rally driving and techniques used by drivers.
Reminds me of that time a nascar driver did a wall ride to pass a few cars at the end of a race - he took the outside line, all gas no brakes, sliding on the concrete barrier. Pretty cool that it worked IRL

Interesting that you mention making it loose and flowy, because thats exactly how the 86 was setup for the mountain runs. The car was initially setup for tofu delivery, so it wasn't meant to be fast in that configuration. The whole purpose of the cup was "if the water comes out of the cup, the tofu will likely be damaged". So heavy acceleration, braking, lateral G force, sudden movements and hard drivetrain forces were all a "no no" while Takumi was doing delivery runs.

I live in Japan. The scariest thing I've done here is drive country roads with typhoon-size open gutters. One mistake, and you need a tow truck and probably major suspension work.
I drove a car up and down Irohazaka and I don't remember gutters being that bad. Maybe it wasn't country road enough.
Since then, I've driven around the Island of Seychelles and that was absolutely terrifying. They have completely open gutters that are like, 2 or 3 feet deep. The roads are fairly narrow, just wide enough for two cars to pass by each other and they are *incredibly steep* going up and down the mountains (which is literally any road that's not a ring road of the island). I drove one day with a car hire. Afterwards, I used their local "uber" equivalent and enjoyed the trip much more.

@@depremere3991 now they know those gutters don't play. I was in a rental and was terrified of that happening. I signed up for the CDW and incidental, but both clauses stated it didn't cover damage caused by the cavernous gutters.
We have such shitty road maintenance in Finland that the side of the road has in many place work the pavement off least partially and combination with heavy logging trucks using all the space, those areas are stamped rather tight so if i'm in hurry/driving seriously there is several spots i utilize those to go trough corners way faster than i could using the pavement it self. Similarly in couple years after i got my license i also developed driving technique to use inertia to swing the rear out with out using hand brake to drift trough the corners. After 10 years of driving like that, i come across this new thing to me coming from Japan called drifting and i was just confused "isint that just normal serious driving?"... Of course i was limited to what under powered FWD corolla and her extremely heavy rear end could do, so did this mostly on winter, but its funny how everyone were so shocked about gutter cornering and inertia drifts, when that was normal driving to me.

True fans know that everything in Initial D was actually advised by Keiichi Tsuchiya. He was consulted during the creation of Initial D and the story was loosely based on him. It's satisfying too that the clutch kicking real life example was also done by Keiichi in the video. So obviously, everything that happens in Initial D that seems plausible is legitimately possible.

Indeed the only stock things in the car were the chassis and the dashboard. And maybe the seats. I think those were changed later in the series.

@@Jtw0912 You might be correct about the engine being stock. Ryosuke's plan to beat takumi was to remove the big turbo from his rx7. His theory was the ae86 was fast not because it made lots of power, but because the driver didn't slow down at all.
But when takumi took his friend (was it itsuki or iketani) as a passenger he was surprised they were already going so fast when the speedometer began ringing.
Stock or not, bunta's mechanic friend surely had a hand in it.
The original engine was stock outside intake and exhaust. Stock hp in this car is 138 and it was stated to be putting out about 150 hp. The second engine is supposed to make about 230-25hp
Glowing red disks happen a lot when you’re left foot braking. One time, I came in at the end of a long rally stage with the disks glowing red. The timing team noted “your disks are red but your brake pads aren’t on fire so you didn’t go fast enough on the stage.”

They have a point about the guard rail lighting up like that. Not about the thing they said, but thats pretty high quality for Anime at the time. Season 1 was still in 4:3, so thats a moment you can see how much the animation team cared about cars, apart from the rest of the show.

For a quick correction:
When brake fluid boils, it has nothing to do with viscosity. Brake fluid, like most fluid, is incompressible in its liquid form. When you boil it, brake fluid becomes a gas which will compress similar to having air in your brake lines. Any force used to compress a gas is not used to press your brake pads into the rotor. That’s why boiling brake fluid is dangerous.
Hehe kinda funny how they missed the part where the "Ultra Super Late Braking guy" was the arrogant guy in his Silvia Spec-R S15 making fun of Itsuki's Corolla AE85 Levin and Iketani's S13. Then after his fancy late breaking technique got passed by Takumi driving Itsuki's car and using the gutter technique completely blowing their minds. They thought the AE85 did the late breaking technique, quite similar to the super duper braking guy thinking he was being followed by the S13 hehe

Indeed a skill driver could. With enough practice. And wrecked cars from said practice.
But Hey, that one time I pulled it off perfectly without any damage to the car... So its possible.
there is clips of rally drivers doing the exact same thing, the line is basically just a tighter hairpin.
and any normal car would be destroyed, my suspension was shot after a quarter second of airtime in my civic, but rally suspension is built to take that.
that's why drivers like colin mcrae were able to thrive in rally, those cars are built tough, but also, cars are surprisingly durable when you don't care about them.
There are youtube videos of people pulling off that exact line. I know at least one was doing it in sim until he could get it.

the Anime explains that the AE86 panda isnt a stock showroom car his dad was the Drift King so the car is modded and tuned. i also love how they put real world facts of the cars and fun facts in the anime made it a little more based in reality. als also there is a new Series called MFG or MF Ghost you should check it out
The initial spec of the car in part 1 aren't very modified, just some light tuning and a few aftermarket parts, it isn't until Takumi join project d that they start heavily modifying the car, you can see the specs (I think) in the manga and online

6:50 it does work. At least in snow on a gravel road. I've used that technique a few times to get around a corner I've entered way too fast. Dip the front inner into the ditch, catch the rear that's trying to swing out now and slide through it.
That kinda works like wallriding, but less damaging.

Y'all know that Keiichi Tsuchiya, the Drift King himself directly supervised the creation of the original manga and anime, right?
And the main character's AE86 is basically just a recreation of Tsuchiya's AE86.
Also, DK's AE86 is powered by a 7A-FE engine with a Corolla AE111 cylinder head from the 4A-GE Black Top.

I'm having flashbacks to my worst engine blow. It was a 350 V8 and a rod let loose and smacked the cam. The cam broke in half and fell in the spinning crank! The lifters and pushrods joined the cam in the spinning crank for extra fun. There were 4 broken rods, one out the side of the block, a piston through a cylinder wall, and the oil pan was more holes than oil pan.

@20:53 The reason road racers will, at times, left foot brake while at WOT on a straight is to get temperature into the brakes going into a slow turn after a long straight, not just to play mind games. Race pads are pretty useless when they get cold.

@@INFERNUM95 Races are very good, the star of the show (Datsun 240 Devil Z) is as memorable as the AE86, but the central focus of Wangan Midnight is not the techniques and hype in street racing like Initial D - It's the consequences that come to people who do those street races in the middle of densely populated highways.
What leads them to race, their encounters with the Devil Z, and how many ultimately abandon street racing for good after it.
The gutter run doesn't put the wheel in the gutter he actually uses the car twist to clear the gutter and put the wheel on the inner (far inside side) curb of the gutter the bumps are the seams between the sections. It's fully animated out in a few episodes!
The mount akina gutter run does. But one of the away races he does the lift over.
idea if you wanna check if the hopping over the gutter trick is possible:
get a very small homebuilt "gutter" thats like 4mms deep and paint the inside of it with some paint thats very liquid and if the tire isnt painted afterwards that means it works.
I used to play wreckfest a lot. A few months in, i started watching initial D.
One of the techniques i took away from the anime was the gutter technique, really helped on a some of tracks because they use a good amount of "gutter" type inside corners. Rolled my car often during races before i got the hang of it lol, but i got noticeably faster.

The gutter technique absolutely blows me away initial d did it. I grew up in a family that drove very very very hard on the back mountain roads of West Virginia. My late uncle was always the man to beat on them roads. He never was the man had real talent behind the wheel without a doubt. He taught me this gutter technique as a young teen one night we could get a car slowed on some old back roads. We hit 35mph turn in a Mazda 323 running every bit 85-90 mph. He yelled hold on boys to me and my cousin. I thought we were dead. After the turn we were still moving 60 mph. Ive used the trick a few times myself through out the years of raising hell behind the wheel and it works. Without a doubt you tare up shit but it does work and will get you around a sharp turn way faster then you ever should. From watching power lines at night time for headlight glare rev matching auto and manual transmissions to slow down, using the gutter technique, using throttle and brake manipulation to keep a car inline and so much more little tricks like this. This is the stuff that makes a wheelman .

Loved the commentary! Just have a small correction : the reason brakes fade when the fluid boils is not that the fluid loses viscosity (it does get thinner - but that's not a problem, because it still is not compressible), but because it turns into vapor. Being a gas, the vapor is compressible (like a spring), where the fluid is not compressible. You don't need a lot of fluid to boil to inject a lot of vapor into the line - and then it's just like having a lot of air in the line. Even a little air will make the brakes feel "soft" - but a lot of air or vapor in the line will result in the brakes being so soft that they are basically absent - you push the pedal, and it goes right to the floor with no resistance. (and no braking). I have had this happen to me on the track. However, you are not totally out of control - esp. on a manual shifter. You can carefully downshift and let the engine slow you down - perhaps with some damage to the clutch material, but that's better than a crash.
There is a proper rally reference for Irohazaka Jump for the blue MR2. You can find Luis Climent in an Opel Corsa A during the Rally Principe de Asturias in 1990.

Brother Bunta is literally the GOAT he's refereed to as the god of racing later on and is why Takumi is so insanely successful because it's revealed in later arcs that the 86 wasn't actually stock at all it was tuned by Bunta to be a ricer and he was one of the best tuners there was. So all the time when everyones like "woah that 86 is insane how can he beat a GTR" it's hinting at the modifications.
There's a few other hints before it's explicitly revealed later on.
The even more insane part of the story is Bunta doesn't tell Takumi about modding the car for each race, he simply gives him the best tools he needs and Takumi instinctively puts them to use
It's funny about the brake check, but I've actually used that in sim racing sometimes. You get people who are super quick, and follow you around, but don't really know where the brake points are, so what I would do is get on the brake pedal just enough to activate the lights but not put any actual force on it, usually buys me 100 feet, and then you can grow the gap from there, as you break the tow.
I have done this also haha.
i do this on corners you don't need to brake on, i'll tap the brake ever so slightly with my left foot, the brake lights go off, and they lose .300ths in an instant
it's especially useful in flatout corners where there's only one good line, either they try and overtake and risk flying off the track, or they sit behind me and lose that time.
this also works on midspeed corners where you don't brake, but you let off the gas and rotate the car through, as inexperienced drivers will brake in those corners, so it's plausible for you to be braking.
if you fail to sell the fact you're braking, they might call your bluff and that trick will run out. i try to only use it as a last ditch thing before a checkered flag just to throw off their timing enough to guarantee no drama before the finish line.

The real question is, which Initial D dub did you watch?
There was TokyoPop and Funimation. The Funimation dub had the Eurobeat soundtrack and more faithful to the anime. Tokyopop was made much earlier, had their own..... interesting soundtrack, and had their own names for the characters.
Huh... a fan of this anime for 6 years and I didn't know there were multiple dubs. Maybe because I pretty much always focused on the sub lol
The Tokyopop dub has so many differences because it was meant to match some western releases of the arcade game, as well as being intended to air on American TV. A lot of the changes were because they didn’t think the music and names would appeal as much to American viewers.
I'm so glad I found the funimation one and not the other one the first time I watched... I feel like I may not have loved the D as much as I do if it had gone the other way.

What was funny to me is the second season was widely released (via torrent) as initially a Chinese dub with English Subtitles. I took Chinese in high school for a couple years (Mandarin), but I believe this was Cantonese. It was a little odd at first, but I was fine afterwards since I was just reading the subs. My friend from Japan also liked the series after I introduced it to him. When season 2 was being released he visited my dorm to watch it. When the dialogue started he was startled, then confused and said, "They're speaking Chinese!" I said, "yeah. I couldn't find a Japanese version." He smirked and waned a bit then said, "Okay, can we start over? I just listened to it before but now I need to read the subtitles." I said, "Oh yeah...sorry bro. I tried but couldn't find the original Japanese audio, so this is all there is for now."

I deeply appreciate that they aren't insistent on trying to be so hard nosed that nothing is possible. A lot of the time you watch these types of videos and the "experts" are so big on trying to sound like experts that they can't think outside of strict norms.

If you think that initial d cars are setup/tuned/upgraded like/as rally cars, then most of the physics make sense. or almost make sense.
I remember in the early 2000s in Sacramento all of the little Japanese street racer rides had Initial D stickers in the window. I remember playing SegaGT and Forza1 and halfway through the game they'd give you this little Toyota hatchback and I'd be like 'this crappy car again?' and you'd do the racing engine upgrade and just DOMINATE the AI racers. Then I saw the show I understood, seeing the cultural impact of this show on street racing before I actually saw the show. Awesome video.

I love cars but never heard Initial D until Donut released a video of the cars on that show. Ever since then, i have started my binge. Im absolutely hooked. Ive always have been about muscle but the show has now grew a love for JDM cars. I have a neighbor thats has a 300zx i want to buy now. It doesn't run but it will my be project!
Initial D is probably *the* anime car guys know about. It’s basically why Eurobeat is a decently popular music genre, and it’s why the AE86 is as well-known and popular as it is. The anime is why the “Tofu Tax” exists.
if you liked Initial D I highly suggest you watch MFG and Wangan Midnight. That 300zx you're talking about is actually one of the first cars seen in Wangan Midnight. You could also have a go at reading the mangas, they sometimes tend to differ from the anime and offer a bit more room for personal interpretation.
Only jump into a project like that if you're 100% committed to the blood, sweat, and tears it will give you. I once wanted to have a miata as a project car, and I ended up hating it just as much as I loved it.

Noo the black R32 did not need help to stop lol he was trying to take out the other car! He was upset at other dude who took his girl and then she died so he didn’t want to live anymore and wanted to take out dude he was racing. Luckily homie was driving behind during race and saw this was going down so when super tight turn was coming he came around to help so his friend would live because the R32 was trying to “un-alive” him.
Which Initial D series is that from where the r32 is being stopped by the 350z and the other car? Plz I need to see this series
@@Loso0315 Fifth Stage. It was Ryosuke that was battling his rival in his R32. The R32's younger brother was in the 350Z. But yes if you can find Fifth Stage that's where it got animated.
