Gabriel has some of the best funk guitar and bass parts of the last 30 years. Not to mention the most soulful white voice still working today (RIP Gregg Allman). Those darn Brits can do anything....
It’s funny you should say that cuz actor Peter Weller who played Robocop said he listened to this song on a Walkman while filming the shootout at the factory scene.
I think the best thing about tim is those faces he pulls! That last one is a classic - `heres a great fast lick ` - did I get away with that? - Yes !! Then he laughs - just great to watch and listen to.
7:05 ... that was some of the most beautiful notes I've ever heard lol. Really. I had to go back and hear it a few times. Peter needs to call you for a 2021 35th anniversary remix edition. That is amazing work for this song. And it's work that wasn't necessary because the song was perfect before. But man, great added work on top of it.
I remember when I got this record and played it the first time. The hi-hat intro with all its intricacies and then the exploding piano. Still gives me goosebumps. Funnily enough, whenever I play over this song for fun, go for something similar to the r’n’b riff you played. But you do it much better. One of my favourite songs ever, and the parts you play would suit it very well. 👍
I've been doing this for a long time, simply because it's easier than leaning the original guitar parts. To hear a master like you recommending it makes me feel good!
Practicing over songs was the single best advice I was given when I was younger, that mixed with playing with other people is huge in learning your roles and parts! Thanks Tim!
Gabriel's songs are so subtle complex if you start listening more closely. When Rick Beato dissected Peter's work in the series What Makes This Song Great, I realized how much almost inaudible work has been done to contribute to the sound.
In your eyes, great to play ruclips.net/video/qXvTzgQGYL8/видео.html I still haven't nailed Solisbury Hill but I should I visited it daily once upon a time.
By the way, Tim: Have you seen Rick Beato's 'What if Frampton, VH and Eric Johnson had played the 'Stairway To Heaven' solo?' video? I'd be keen to hear what *you* would've played! Maybe an idea for an episode?! ;-))
Thanks for indulging us! As more of a hard rock guy, I really loved when you opened up on the soloing at the end, especially that end around 7:52, and the second time through (reminded me of Lukather on some of those faster phrases). Always enjoy your videos 🤘😎🤘
My new wild guitar fantasy is having you write and record guitar parts for my songs! Great work as always sir. I love the new textures your guitar parts added to this already great song.
It's great to hear your thought processes and instincts on how you create and manage parts throughout the song. "Increasing presence" also means cultivating and holding listeners' interest; a great lesson for us, and reason why so many of the songs you played on are so memorable. Thanks for posting this!
Great licks Tim , also my favorite thing to do, not in your league , but you always inspire me. Absolutely love your playing and approach to what you play , simply BRILLIANT!!
I've owned this album since it came out and it has remained one of my favourite albums of all time. Owned it in every format, and after all these years I still hear new things in it. Timeless yet very much of its time.
just wanted to say i purchased your master class today Tim and i think its absolutely incredible, had some time to look through a lot of it and for the money it costs you can got not go wrong . it has it all and i highly recommend to a guitarist of any level . I've already learned a few things to take away from it in the first sitting . thanks for your great work you are a truly inspiring musician and i think anybody can learn something from you . 👍👍👍
Ever since my first 4track it was such an eye opener as a learning tool to track along with my fav tunes. As if I was at the session or a gig...then ask myself "would the band be smiling or giving me the stink eye". What a great example and lesson Tim!!
With Peter Gabriel the track can be as full or as empty as you like. He finishes the song with just him on keyboard and voice, and sounds as good as crescendo time.
There’s a band called iio that often has no guitar, but drones endlessly, which serves my purpose and invites guitar lines. Some musicians really appreciate fan contributions too.
Rapture is a great song - I love that kind of music for getting inspired on guitar, precisely because it has no guitar in it. The melodies are so solid in much of that house music style
ok so hear me out: "Red Rain" is one of my favorite songs, period. not just from the 80s, not just of Peter Gabriel's... period. but i would gladly replace the album version with a recording where you play on top of it. you and your playing fit right in and feel at home in this song.
Sounds great Tim ! Awesome song indeed, but most of PG's work is. As a side note, I was lucky enough to run sound for Levon Minassian, who plays duduk on Us and Secret World Live, and he was a joy to work with, very graceful (he saw I obviously was a bit nervous) and one of the fastest soundchecks I ever went through. he required a SM57, no monitor, told me "try to make it sound natural, then slap some verb and echo, and it'll be fine". Played for 2 minutes, then went "that's very good, make sure to store that !". Then thanked me after the show. Great great guy, and one hell of a stellar musician.
What,s interesting with Gabriel is that guitar parts seem to crystallize when they play them live. Watch any live videos of this from the late 80s, you'll hear what David Rhodes is playing much clearer. In my band, we've been playing Gabriel covers for years and I usually mix what I hear from the album and early live versions (as close as possible after the album's release). That said, what Rhodes is playing is usually quite simple. Check ou Beato's analysis of of In Your Eyes. Very interesting ;) Stems from Games Without Frontiers can also be found. Also, having listened to Gabriel since the late 70s and reading a lot about him too, he wouldn't have let Rhodes (or anyone else) play an actual lead ;)
I've always done this. First it was with an album,CD, or radio. Now I put on a Sirius/XM channel and go. Whatever song comes on I have to find the key and play along. It ear training and harmonic practice all at once. And a lot of fun!
I have always loved to do this. Even with MTV back in the early days! I had a girlfriend tell me, "You're not playing the song" in a derogatory way. In my mind, I was playing what I would play to the song if covering or recreating. Now, in worship band, I can easily find parts to play and hear the chords and structure. Great practice skill!
Wonderful advice...I've been doing this since I was a kid around 10. It's how I learned ...grab an album that is beyond you and play along...and keep going round and round till your ears figure out what to play...I'm now 57 and still do this...
@@timpierceguitar hi Tim, I started playing back in about 1972 when I around 8. Back then the only way to learn was put on an album and play along. I devoured albums that had techniques and scales and styles I'd not heard before. Put it on the turntable...put the needle down...pick up your guitar...and play along....all day till you had it down. I'd use the album as a "backing track". This then enabled me to jam with anybody as to me it was just like playing along with a album. I treated sessions the same way...
So much respect man. You've got some sort of taste. It's natural and adds to the song. Great job. I love this tune too. Now it'll never be enough without you.
Thanks bud, I'm probably wrong again, I've allways seen the session guy as the person brought in to add the sophistication to the music. Respect, and please stay healthy all.
that last minute added finale at 11:25 ish made me laugh with so much musical satisfaction, you're awesome man, so slick with your guitar playing... :-)
That was fantastic Tim!!!!! I so wish you had played on that album. You're right, the guitars are pretty buried in that song. Man, you have a great sense of harmony and phrasing. You Made my day. Please go back to doing the Tim and Pete show again.
Great song and terrific playing as always, I love this 80's style and tone. A great guitar player people don't often analyze and who has amazing percussive feel and tone is Jamie West Oram from The Fixx.
80's studio records like Peter Gabriel's, and Genesis had a lot of layered production on them. Almost like The Wall of Sound. They're great for playing guitar with / over. Tim makes it sound like He was recorded on the original recording.
I used to work for Peter Gabriel at Real World studios taking care of his websites. He's a truly nice guy and has an amazing community of creatives around him.
@@timpierceguitar it’s not possible for you to disrespect any piece of music, you bring so much warmth and love to everything you play, it’s truly inspiring.

"So." is an absolute sonic masterpiece and masterclass in production and songwriting.

Great stuff Tim! One of my fav albums of all.
Love that lick at the end and your reaction to it Tim. That's what playing guitar is all about.
