those 4.6 V8 are pretty damn good
Forget the Mustang! I want to see more of that GC8!
Owning an S197 since new in 07, I've managed to do my share of research on these cars and till this day I love it. It has just about every bolt on you can buy. Personally, for the long tube headers I didn't remove half the stuff they did, I simply placed a strut tower engine hoist across the car and removed both motor mounts, I then lifted the engine about 2 inches which was enough to get the headers in. The k&N is the power robber here. No cats ok long tube headers ok x pipe ok, k & n and no tune= not ok. For bigger gains should have gone with the JLT series 3 and a custom tune.
We'll be doing a tune soon so curious to see how much power it picks up. I can't believe that the K&N will rob power.
Speed Academy Of course it will make more power than stock, however for the price paid of the knn, a JLT series 3 is not only bigger, badder, and cheaper in price, but WILL make more power. This is due to the larger diameter of the tubing as well as the design engineered for better flow.
Can we see more of that GC in the background? That thing looks awesome!
It has a super rare Trial Japan widebody on it. That's all we really know about it. Long-time customer car at NV.
Ahh. Didn't realize it was customer car. Bummer. Would really like to see some more of that thing.
That is the nicest set of headers I've ever seen. You are going to gain hp and torque across the entire rpm range. The crossover pipe allows a pulse coming from one header go down both exhaust tubes from the x pipe back, giving it a much larger exhaust path.
With the stock engine not pushing a ton of power upgrading the intake and exhaust makes less of a difference. Once you upgrade the cam or add power some other way, these new breathing upgrades will make a big difference.
Exactly, we've got some more NA mods coming our way pretty soon.
I don't understand why you don't have more views this is by far the best RUclips channel
Thanks so much! We'll get there eventually :)
I like how it's Dave starting stuff, but 2 and a half second in, and Pete is elbows deep in the engine bay 😂
That GC in the back at 14:24 looks awesome.
6:45 If only you had an extra set of hands to catch that pipe for you...
I know you guys are super advanced hobbyists and all, but a word of advice from a dealer technician: heat and impact loosens bolts, spray and using a wrench by hand breaks bolts. Shocking the fastener is a good thing. 9.5 out of 10 of the bolts I've snapped at work happened by hand. When I should have used an impact.
Thanks for the tip! The issue is we couldnt get an impact in there to get those off.
The studs are easy to get out. Even if you break one. Because they're not torqued very tight. The nut clamping the manifold to the stud has the higher torque. You break a manifold/header bolt you're in for some hurting.
This is the best project ever. Japanese stuff is awesome but Murca is fun too.
Yup, we're loving it so far!
all that money spent on exhaust and they get the off the O'Reilly's shelf air intake😂😂
Dave, we need a video with Sasha about the juicy details from race video that's all over the place.
We recently shot a video covering exactly that. Should be out in a few weeks. Dave even took Sasha's Z for a rip.
Great video as always! Hope you guys find some amazing things at SEMA! Make sure to talk to Brandon and Travis with the RS over at the Snail Performance booth!!
We're looking forward to seeing the Snail bros!
great video guys!! like how Petes shirt went from all white to zebra patterned in just a few minutes. awesome awesome.
Haha the grime is epic on this car!
Cross over pipes deffinitely work for V8s, did wonders for my V8.
that snap-on light at 6:40 is one of the best investments anyone can make
Yes it is! WE need like three of them and our lighting setups would be perfect.
great detailed video guys! Cant wait to see upcoming mods!
nice vid, if ya wanna tip, next time use a straight edge to check header flange flatness, probably the most common exhaust leak in the aftermarket world, ask me how i know, lol
Thanks, we'll do that!
what a lot of work !!
nice move lifting the engine. I had to do the same thing do do a head job on my subaru, makes all the difference in the word for clearance.
Perfect opportunity to swap the motor out for a dirty old SR20 and make some serious grunt
Or you could leave it there for one day to see it properly run over a crowd of people (I know these mustang jokes are old but come on)
Mick D Shouldn't it be an RB26? Haha
Love the 4.6 s197's....the lightest the most simple of this gen best looking, best sounding and cheapest to mod, I must say I'm a fan of the sohc 4.6....
but the 5.0L Coyote's make such good power that we have to say we'd go for that gen S197 before the 4.6L
Interested to see what it makes for power and what you do with the car. These cars are becoming more available and less desirable, so it might be a bargain track car.
I would like to see you guys wash that engine bay though. Not for aesthetic purposes, but instead to help spot leaks or other potential issues.
God ya, the engine bay is disgusting. We have cleaned it up a bit since then but it still needs a serious washing.
You guys SERIOUSLY need to do get a traction bar/track bar! Alex twist kills these things!
Also please something with that suspension
The geometry..... stock....
No words..
Also the cross over uses the vacuum pulse from one bank tho help evacuate the opposite and gives overall better flow and sound
Otherwise you guys are doing good! Keep it up!
MyLonewolf25 dont you worry, we have something for that :)
shiftyrx7 thank good
That would be the absolute first thing I do on something like this for the track
Even before that godly exhaust
Is that exhaust equal length headers or no? It didn't look like it
+MyLonewolf25 parts dont often arrive in the sequence we would like so we install what comes in. You should know how that is ;)
shiftyrx7 figured
But
I just wanted to say anyway
I know how it happens tho
It sucks ass
But hey
At least you can have some ungodly ear gassams till then
Also have fun with more snapped bolts
It's a Ford ;)
That's coming from someone who owned one
Why is everyone flipping out about the header install? You have to remove engine mounts, starter, and steering shaft. Not a whole lot of V8 cars where you can get around not removing any of those to install headers. It's also not that difficult, but pulling out the stock stuff is a pain in the ass.
I see you guys share the pain of rusted bolts like us here in Iceland
Yes very much so, rust is the worst enemy.
Pretty mellow for a catless long tube setup....Great video! My taste would have selected a different muffler.
We love it! quiet at cruising and a monster at WOT.
16:50 Here's why these engines pick up some power with the crossover. Most V8s on the road, to reduce Noise, Harshness, and Vibration, are "crossplane". This arranges the pistons in such a way that the first-order and second-order imbalances are zero throughout the entire crankshaft revolution. One downside to this approach is that the firing order will always have two cylinders on the same bank fire in succession. When this happens, the exhaust from the second cylinder will run into the still-present exhaust pressure from the first cylinder, causing a flow restriction. That X-pipe is a crossover that balances out exhaust pressure between the cylinder banks.
On the other hand, so much press is made of Ferrari V8 engines as well as the new engine for the GT350. Those are "flat plane", which means your firing order can always alternate between the banks. It also means your second-order vibration will constantly vibrate left and right.
out here banging Westside that's what's up
quick drive after mods would be nice
Roadkills "Engine Masters" has some great videos with V8 tuning solutions with dyno results.
Yes, we've been watching them all.
Lift overdose: Putting a car that high that you can't reach it without using a ladder. :D
But anyways, it's a great video as always!
great stuff guys, keep it up!
Hey fellas clean that engine bay before you work!!! Keep up the good work. Even though I'm not a huge fan of this year mustang I'm sure this is going to be a fun project.
It's soooo dirty, we can't even describe the level of filth. It'll good a good cleaning soon.
*Torques down 4 bolts*
"I'm over it, it's time to just gun some shit on here"
That headers job seems like a pain!!
I know I shit talked this car at Dylan's shop for being a slow 3v car but I'm already having fun watching. It would be a interesting comparison when you guys are done to compare to a bone stock coyote 11-14 car to see how much better you can make it for the money saved.
They are slow when stock! But the hope is with the right mods it'll make some decent power and turn a fast lap time. We're already loving it actually.
That rust is insane!
Part of me wishes I would of gotten one of these 3valve s197's and gone full project car with it, working on it for fun.. instead I got a new ecoboost and I'm scared to mod it because I don't want to lose the warranty Lol.
Damn Ford stainless steel clamps with mild steel fasteners!!!!!!
Thats a sexy gc8!
Can we get some details on that black wide body impreza in the back?? Looks incredible.
Trial Japan widebody. Super rare stuff. Not too sure what else the car has, other than a fully built EJ and a cage. It's a Time Attack build that's on-going at NV.
"Stage 8 bolts?" Do you mean "grade 8?" (18:03)
Nope, stage 8. It's a brand name of locking bolts.
Why didn't you guys heat wrap the headers? Seems like the perfect opportunity to considering how much of a pain it is to get those headers off.
With a naturally aspirated engine that doesn't rev that high, EGT's shouldn't be too bad so we're not too worried about radiant heat from the headers. Plus wrapping the headers will trap dirt and moisture and can rot out the headers pretty quick too, although these should be pretty durable given the 304 stainless construction.
Geez, try pressure washing the engine bay before working in there...
Who knew that the dipstick bolts on? Everyone who's looked at how a metal dipstick is attached?
Taking those engine mounts out makes it SO much easier. Nice job.
NO, that intake won't give you 15/15. Get rid of that K+N filter. They flow well but let all the dust through. Much better options out there.
Also, what happened with that last stud that was still in there while you were scotchbriting?
Sounds good and V8-ish. That thing is dying for some wheels and tires. Maybe reach out and get some TE37s for that, too? :P
WE've got that on lockdown in the next episode. :)
I already smoked a bolt on 02 GT with just my 16 GTI DSG and an APR tune.
You are missing a pedal
And you forgot to mention...i am wrong wheel drive. lol
Seems even just working on a mustang is pretty dangerous :P This is gonna be a sweet project. I want to see what it can do at TMP before and hopefully after some suspension mods.
You won't have to wait too long for those results.
Now it's gonna sound a lot meaner when it runs over a crowd hahah joking!Awesome grunt can't wait to see what's next for the Stang!
why not get one of those Quick JAcks ?!
We may do that if we're stuck in our current shop much longer.
sounds great!
Jesus first time I've ever seen a entire car needing to be dismantled to install basic breather mods lol
Shoulda went Airaid bud. Waaaaay more power potential. That K&N just doesn't cut it.
You do know that AirRaid and K&N are the same company? And for us the difference in 2-5hp gain is nominal in the real world so we'll stick with our K&N for now.
I mean you do what you do, and same company or not, more power is more power. I would also challenge that 2-5hp gains in the real world. I've been doing the S197 3V thing for about 10 years, and the Airaid is a much better choice for power. Any CAI is better than the super restrictive airbox, but still. And it really comes alive with more supporting mods. The difference in intake diameter becomes very apparent. But it might be a difference with Canada regulations vs US regulations.....or lack of good tuners.
Maybe we'll get an Air Raid intake and do a quick test on the two at the dyno.
I'd like to see a cat boy size comparison with the same cpsi. For example, 200 cell cats with a 5" body and 4" body.
How long was the Mustang under water.... mould? on the engine when prepping for the gasket
Its oil spray to keep it from rusting.
Flow through exhaust with no cats, but that intake is compliant AF.
disappointed Dave didn't say like butaaaaa during this vid :)
No air tools? I haven't watched the video all the way but wouldn't an impact have not broken the manifold to cat bolts?
We tried, wouldnt budge em!
I don't know if it was mentioned, but that starter should be protected with some kind of heat reflection material. those headers will cook that thing and you'll have a hard time starting the car. just trying to save you from those F.O.R.D. (Found On the Road Dead) jokes...
is that dust in the bay? sick build
It's actually undercoating with a charming layer of dust and dirt stuck to it. We'll clean her up soon, we promise.
Any chance you will use those rally style exhaust tip cats?
Those do look super cool, but they make more sense on a small displacement turbo car that makes a ton of exhaust gas heat. We're going to keep the Mustang a bit more stealth than that for now, but if we boost it then who knows!
well it looks like the fancy oil pan isn't on it as well what happened to that.
Its always easy dealing with rusty bolts when the stuff doesnt have ti go back on:)
I love it! Where can I get an official Speed Academy ladder for working on my car!
Home Depot, Racing Department.
Oh yea! That exhaust sounds like sex to my ears. The only time I've ever wanted a V8 lol
Will we get to see the Evo go around the track?
Sadly, not this year. Winter has come way too early :(
Where do you guys get your torque specifications from when working on cars?
Pete please take that cut you got from that rusted pipe seriously
id like to see it with no mufflers or cats
you guys need to do an episode just on engine wash of the mustang...
No joke! That may actually happen.
I like the Mustangs from this gen because the fellas that drive them think that exhaust noise equates to speed...nope,I haven't lost to one yet....the new 5.0 has been another outcome for me😔.
Audiwan Kenobi the 5.0 is where is at!
Lmao but the 5.0 looks like your sisters car
will it be turboed/supercharged?
Dyno comparisons?
ranger quick jack BL-5000SLX Car Lift
is that a subaru 2.5rs in matte black i see hiding in there?
Serg Stroble you're a subaru 2.5rs
i wish i was. damn. dat 2.5rs doe.
Yea yea lets put this sticker on the intake so that way the cops know this is CA legal...nevermind the part about missing catalytic converters and breaking the decibel noise level of the car with the aftermarket setup lmfao some CA logic right there
When they just barely got a shop lol
forget the Mustang. let's see that satin black GC!
Holy hell that that underside is rustier than my sex life
Canada Life, bro :D
I can't imagine how frustrating that rust has got to be. I tried to put a TRD axelback on my TC the other day and the car is only 4 years old and it's a Texas car. There wereonly 2 rusty bolts and I used penetrating blaster (lol) and couldn't get them to budge with a big breaker bar and jack handle extension. Took a shop with power tools and a torch to get them off.
Wait till you see what we have to do to get the front control arms out!
Good morning! 1st
And people say subaru's are hard to work on lol.
can you pass an e-test?
lol PT keeps calling the lift a hoist, a hoist is a cherry picker
I respect Ford and most American brands but being mechanically oriented, seeing how much work you gotta do to rip those headers out, well any part on most ford's, pushes me away from them and dislike em. Takes a full day todo that work vs give or take 2 to 3 hrs on my g35. Nice job none the less guys.
Adrian Perez don't forget ALL the rusty and snapped bolts
Take it from a ford owner
ALL OF EM
Swapping headers on the Stang was actually way easier than doing headers on a 350Z or G35 (we've done that job on Dave's G35 back in the day and it's a nightmare).
Speed Academy could be worse. It could have been an f150
Even with raising the engine you have maybe 1/4 inch of wiggle room to get it in and out
Speed Academy huh that's interesting. Well I have a lift and that makes it millions easier but I won't deny it can be a handful.
When did ford switch to crap steal, our 04 is full stainless!
you deleted the cats what the hell is the point of the carb sticker lol
this video makes me so happy i own a 4 cylinder
get a Bama tune.
wheres the burnout?
the only thing that needs to be done on a 4.6 is swapping the engine out anything else is a waste of money
that gc8 tho......
Omg you guys did to much extra work. It really didn’t take all that. And get a real cold air intake lol
2nd
Ahh, crappy American engineering. I'd much rather be working on a Japanese or even German car.
Have fun with that!
Love watching the builds. Best channel on RUclips!
lol i love guys like you who talk shit about peoples cars knowing damn well you don't own shit yourself
You need to do some research before commenting.
Nathaniel Mathies you need to shut your fucking mouth you don't own shit
ps31871 Have you ever worked on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?
havent you Canadians ever heard of brake clean or wd40? no help?
Both of those seem to be very scarce up here in the Canadian white north.
Speed Academy thats a harsh life for a car guy. borderline insane
One dirty engine bay.
long tubes make torque.......
Ryan Rohauer i think it depends on the application, for exemple subarus' long tube headers (equal length) are reknown to make more hp and top end power but to lose a bit of low end torque compared to the unequal length headers (shorties)
Cams
Coming your way!
