YES! so many doing cams and don't upgrade the oil pump. Lost my expedition to oil pump failure and nearly my mustang to low pressure. Have Melling M340HV in it now. Phasers are locked out. car runs way better than when I first bought it.
alot of people dont know this champion makes a one piece spark plug for the 4.6 so you never have to deal wwith the two piece spark plug again. part number 7989
Good to see the old 4.6 running again. I can't wait to see what the future holds for the Rustang. Whatever it is, I have no doubts that it's going to be sick.
Loving the Mustang project. I realize you guys were strapped for time but dropping the subframe to get the race oil pan in is a snap on those cars. Place jack stands under the pinch weld, remove 4 small bolts on the rear out rigger ends of the subframe and place a jack under the center of the frame and remove the 2 rear bolts and just loosen the 2 front. They are long enough to just drop it about 1.5 in rearwards with leaving everything else intact.
It's good to see some 4.6 high revving Crown Victoria lineage back in the spotlight. Keep up the good work and soon the true power of the mullet will be yours.
It's about time you guys move to another location so you can get a actual car lift, it will make things so much easier, can't wait for future updates on this project!
Don't get a proper lift most of use don't have that luxury! Makes these episodes more special since this is what most people struggle with. I know that's why I love watching the struggle is real!
I don’t know if you guys read these comments but I have 09 GT and in 08 Ford re-designed the head to accommodate a single piece spark plug. Was a good video! Using it as a reference when I replace my leaking timing cover.
Again vary impressed by the determination and patients shown by PT. I still suspect there is some editing for curses and thrown tools. Still good to see this PITA (pain in the ass) job done. correctly. Really interested to see how this goes. the non 5.0, 4.6 mod motors have a rep for being fairly insensitive easy HP mods. that is they don't give much for bolt ons.
You aren't wrong. :) There were parts cut out where the cursing was a little too rampant. We are too, we've heard these engines dont respond too well to power mods but we're gonna fine out!
Speed Academy I have same car same color with tons of bolt ons you should consider doing rear main seal mine just started dripping a tad and I read it's common👍🏼
I to use the anti seize compound for the plugs however, I put it all the way down near the electrode. I have never had an issue with the plugs being difficult to get out. They come right out, I use the Autolite HT0 because I have done major mods to my car. High performance cams, Vortech V3 supercharger and the Ford Racing Aluminator all forged internals from Ford. Hope that helps for future videos. I got 606 RWHP with 560FTLbs of torque, they are good motors but have a oil starvation issue on cylinders 3 and 4, it WILL cause the cam followers to seize and then the cam bearing caps break, guess how I know. This happened on the my car just a few days ago requiring all new heads, cams and valves, thank God the pistons and block are perfectly fine. Also, you guys, like me (50 years old) should not being using the word RAD when referencing the radiator, go ahead and add the other three syllables to it, we will still think you guys are cool!! lol Good videos guys.
+1 for anti-seize on the spark plugs. Modified cars get the plugs changed more often, but you never want to risk cross threading or corrosion in an area like that.
Great job guys, you have to spare a thought for the Ford service techs that have to do this day in, day out. Also surprised you went for such a thin oil on a high mileage motor you plan to be beating on. I know cold weather start in Canada is a concern heading into winter, but engines run at +100C regardless of ambient conditions once up and running and being beat on.
The 20w factory fill is just for street duty. Typically we go to Valvoline Pro-V race oil for track days and will step up to a slightly heavier oil too, especially on a higher mileage engine like this that has loosened up over time.
I suspected that might have been the case as Ford spec some light weight oils. Was also honestly quite surprised how clean the inside of the timing case was for an engine with so many miles. enjoy.
I know your guys long term plan is to have a lift but I highly recommend a set of 12 ton jack stands in the short term. I used to work on smaller stands like you guys are using but the stability and lift height of 12 tons is well worth the $200usd for a set of 4. With my set on the lowest setting I can get under a car on a creeper with more then enough room above me.
Ya I realized after getting mine that I needed a bigger jack got a low pro one that goes to 24in. Every inch is worth it considering how much time is spent under the car. I have seen people get hurt from jacks tipping over so its something I always notice. Don't want the best automotive DIY's not able to make videos because of an injury.
Did this work? I'm seeing other videos where they're way more convoluted about the timing and not moving the cams.. talking about removing the rocker arms just to do the timing.
Definitely made a sub here. I'm about to drop in cams in my 09 and replace the timing set as well while I'm in there. Think I'll have enough clearance for the pulley puller if I just remove the fan? Not trying to pull the Rad and shit. I've had mixed answers.
Ok, here's the thing about wrapping chains... you're putting pressure on the links in all sorts of crazy directions. Another thing with using the bolt on the block instead is, yes, it maybe small, but it helps spread that tension over the length of the entire bolt. (That's kind of a guess to be fair) All I know for certain is, I've seen those chains snap when wrapped like that, never once have I seen one of those bolts snap though.
That was a great educational video. I wish that same mechanic could work on my 2003 F-150 which I just got told my issue with bad idling is with the timing chain :/
If you want Subaru builds, watch mighty car mods. Im sick of watching their jdm builds. Its good to see a naturally aspirated rear drive v8 build for a change. Keep up the good work Speed Academy!
great video, great attention to detail. just one thing i disagree with is the antiseize on the spark plug threads. wouldnt that be considered as an insulator? inhibiting the circuit completion of the spark plug? just my 2 cents, ive encountered individuals putting pipe thread tape on their spark plugs and complain to me of hard starting and loss of spark. great choice on one piece spark plugs.
In all our years of working on cars, we've never heard of anti-seize ever inhibiting or disrupting spark. In this case, the engine has run well with zero issues.
Thank god you finally posted the second the video. I'm still debating if I should replace the timing tensioners on my 01 Bullitt or wait for it to break. I'm wondering if you would have had the same problem with the new oil pan if the car was a manual?
Actually, the successful method is to lower the rear of the transmission which in turn allows the front of the engine to raise providing the additional front subframe clearance needed to maneuver the pan into place.
Haha, well now you've got nothing to fear when you do your tensioners. And dont wait till they break because we lucked out and you may not. It could take out all the valves in both heads if the chains snap.
Ford recommends 5w50 for track use in vehicles that regularly run 5w20 and 5w30. Just some internet info for ya. I am a Ford tech and noticed that on an oil chart. Despite what the oil cap says.
Thanks for the info. We usually switch it out to thicker oil but being that its getting near winter now it made sense to stick with the regular viscosity.
Speed Academy no harm there. I live in Michigan so we are familiar with cold climates lol. Excited to see you guys at shift sector next year. Keep up the cool builds!
I'm doing lash adjusters and rocker arms on my 2010 mustang gt. I can't find any specific videos on proper install. Is there any advice or special things I should take note of with these motors? Thanks
I got an oil leak coming from the crank seal on my turbo 3v. Was gonna upgrade to a billet oil pump when I take the cover off. Can yo get the pump out without dropping the pan?
I wasnt the biggest Ford fan before this video, this has sealed the deal of me NEVER owning one. Man what a pain in the ass, im sure the motor is strong but it sure looks frustrating to work on.
my 06 stang is ticking and today when i started it it had the clacking chain sound BUMMER I have to do this job on mine whats your thoughts on ford racing cams plus pulled valve cover and had a worn down rocker that wore on the cam and was sitting in the head detached from the lash adjuster
Had the same problem with my 06 4.0L. We took the motor out to do the job. Now after putting the motor back in the car wont turn over. I'm only reading code p1000 and checked all fuses. I cant find the problem and I refuse to give up on it and take it to a shop. Afyer watching I'm gonna go mess around with rhe crank sensor cause it's touching a pully and not secured all the way..... Hope this is it! Thanks guys.
where did the headers and exhaust go from episode 2? i looked back at episode 2 and the new oil pan wasn't installed when you guys swapping the exhaust system.
Ya, we decided to post these timing system videos after some of the performance stuff so that we didn't put people to sleep before getting them interested in the project.
Andy Toledo Yes, get some good brake pads and tires and get out there! Find a NASA based track day and they can help you go through the graduated system so you learn safely.
Peter Tarach I had set of spot tech pads and rotors already along with a Dunlop direzzas (sp) that are doing me good along with brake fluids etc just need to make sure I don't need anything else
Question, why couldn’t you just remove the pan from the bottom of the car? What’s the point in lifting the engine? Idk if you can or can’t I’m genuinely curious since I’ll be doing this job myself soon.
Didn't expect so much work for the Headers and timing chain. Should have gotten an LSx powered car. More power and a lot easier to work on. Header change alone is way easier.
This video explains why I am not buying a newer kind of ford car with SOHC or DOHC cam... Right now, I have a 2000 ford expedition. It only has a SOHC. Over the past 5-10 years, I have owned this 2000 Ford Expedition 5.4 ltr engine. The problems I have had in my opinion are due to lousy engineering designs (or built in job security for Ford Mechanics)! My past problems are many of the "SAME" problems others have had with these vehicles. Shifter not going into park, 4 wheel drive shifter mechanism getting stuck in 4 WD, engine heater coolant lines breaking, fuel pump failures, spark plugs, Coil Over Plug (COP) ignition system, rear axle oil leaks, sun roof breaking, vehicle air suspension system lousy, and the latest problem is with the engine (engine SOHC timing system using bicycle chains). I would like to switch out the 5.4 liter new engine with an old fashion non overhead cam engine with push rods (instead of timing chains), but the USA's EPA does not allow this. What a bunch of $+i# !
Worse thing to do, stock oil pump sucks. After 20k, it loses oil pressure due to the back plate weaking and deflection. Cam phasers will wear out, CVT soleniods will go out. Melling high volume oil pump is way better then factory, edelbrock water pump is way better then stock, VCT cam phaser lockouts make the 4.6. 3v run way better. You do not have to wait for oil pressure to build up to get the cams to advance, you no longer have cam phaser play. A modded 3v is way better then a stock 3v. Period.
@@javimel13jm wow crazy. I actually got rid of that 2002 does expedition Eddie Bauer edition like 6 months ago. Had to sell it to the junk yard for 1k. Hurt to do that but i had no choice :( the car was perfectly fine other than that knocking sound it would make
@@robertswift6101 yeah I eventually built up the courage to do the cam phasers and vct solenoids myself at 129k and runs great now but I know the chain and tensioner is next
performanceparts.ford.com/category/91/TimingDriveRelated They're all listed in here with their respective part numbers (M-6004-****), just pick the one for your engine or use the part number to find it from other vendors like Summit (sometimes has cheaper prices).
YES! so many doing cams and don't upgrade the oil pump. Lost my expedition to oil pump failure and nearly my mustang to low pressure. Have Melling M340HV in it now. Phasers are locked out. car runs way better than when I first bought it.
The mullet mustang series has saved me sooooo much trouble.. thank you guys.
alot of people dont know this champion makes a one piece spark plug for the 4.6 so you never have to deal wwith the two piece spark plug again. part number 7989
i am using a brisk performance 1pc design rated for 450hp i got on american muscle and they have given me 0 issues so far
You guys are the best car show on youtube!!!!! All my friend think I have a Canadian accent now lol !!!
Come on peoples get these guy past 100000 .
Good to see the old 4.6 running again. I can't wait to see what the future holds for the Rustang. Whatever it is, I have no doubts that it's going to be sick.
We hope so too. So far we love this project!
Speed Academy Oh, if your previous builds are any indication, I'm sure it will be. You guys really do good work.
3:28AM in Vancouver right now, and I am watching it. Just can't wait!!
YES! we love to hear that!
Your videos gave me to confidence to dismantle my motorbike's old engine, now I just need to put it back together...
Loving the Mustang project. I realize you guys were strapped for time but dropping the subframe to get the race oil pan in is a snap on those cars. Thanks for the info, next time that's exactly how we'll do it.
I worked like that for over a decade before we got our lift. But have meet ford gmc etc., that doesn’t come with a tight fit. Nice work
It's good to see some 4.6 high revving Crown Victoria lineage back in the spotlight.

Using it as a reference when I replace my leaking timing cover.

thanks for the video guys really was a big help on my project S197 really enjoyed every min
BMR K member gives so much more room for headers and pan removal
Lol even I had my fingers crossed when you went to start it up. Sounded good right off the bat though. Nice job.
Got to love it when an afternoon job turns into a 3 afternoon job hahah. Also "I need a lift!" Something I say every time I'm wrenching...
Yeah this one turned out to be a lot more work than we expected!
I love this mustang build series so much! Liked before watching
Thanks! We're digging it too :)

+1 for anti-seize on the spark plugs. Modified cars get the plugs changed more often, but you never want to risk cross threading or corrosion in an area like that.
Agreed, it never hurts right!
Just became a Patreon. Thanks for the awesome content guys!
Thanks so much Mitchell! We really appreciate it.
max Jax portable lift system works with low height ceilings. I'm saving for mine right now

can we see you guys work on some subaru wrx or stis?
boutthatboost you can se me do that LOL
The internet has spoken!!! Bring them a Subaru project!!
How about a 2J BRZ ? @N.V. Auto
Lee Forget working on the next episode for the 2JZ BRZ right now.

Great job, great video. Man, you should have plopped in a couple of cams while you were in there! My '05 with Ford racing Hotrod cams was amazing!!
Then we wouldnt have known the power the bolt-ons make. We'll go back and do the cams in the near future.
Great! I look forward to another great video.

Thank you for the #s197 #mustang videos
Good job guys motor sounds great!
16:40 that's what she said 😂......... Awesome videos (part 1 and 2). Thanks guys, just gave me the motivation to build a bare 4.6 3v modular motor.
Glad we could help!
Ford recommends 5w50 for track use in vehicles that regularly run 5w20 and 5w30. Just some internet info for ya. I am a Ford tech and noticed that on an oil chart. Despite what the oil cap says.

This timing belt took longer rebuilding a 13b #rotarypower #vh8
Bahaha, thats because we have to film everything. #threetimesaslong
Good 👍 work
I'm doing lash adjusters and rocker arms on my 2010 mustang gt.
"Don't ask us how we know." :D i smell doubled work
should drop the K member 3 inches since you had the engine on hoist
Thanks
I wasnt the biggest Ford fan before this video, this has sealed the deal of me NEVER owning one. Man what a pain in the ass, im sure the motor is strong but it sure looks frustrating to work on.
Looked like fun! Sorry i missed it lol
my 06 stang is ticking and today when i started it it had the clacking chain sound BUMMER I have to do this job on mine whats your thoughts on ford racing cams plus pulled valve cover and had a worn down rocker that wore on the cam and was sitting in the head detached from the lash adjuster

where did the headers and exhaust go from episode 2? i looked back at episode 2 and the new oil pan wasn't installed when you guys swapping the exhaust system.
We shot this before installing the intake and exhaust.
front cover then oil pan
it's that you uploaded the intake video first.. when it's way later then this ;)
but I love you videos anyway :)
Ya, we decided to post these timing system videos after some of the performance stuff so that we didn't put people to sleep before getting them interested in the project.
David Pratte makes sense.. love the series, although I'm not a fan of the American cars :)
With an extension on the torque wrench, it can change what the torque value is.
not true
Do you guys have any advise for people who want to do a track day? I have done a couple autocrosse events and I think it's time to go on to a track
Nope, just a helmet and some common sense :)
That's one filthy Mullet engine bay
i have a qestion tho, if i suspected that a mechanic didnt time it rite, if i re-follow this procedure, it will re-time and b fixed, correct?
I really Hope you guys added silicone to the corners of the timing cover.
Left side is drivers side.you put cam phasers on wrong banks
Did u guys take out ur rockers, and lash adjusters ect. ?
nope, we know that's the Ford way to do it but it's not necessary.
Question, why couldn’t you just remove the pan from the bottom of the car? What’s the point in lifting the engine? Idk if you can or can’t I’m genuinely curious since I’ll be doing this job myself soon.
What if the timing chain broke.... How do you find TDC and get both cams lined up properly?
the cam lobe indicate TDC
No priming the oil pump first ?
Would this process work for a 2008 4.6xlt
Now you have to dyno it again since timing is right!
Didn't expect so much work for the Headers and timing chain. Should have gotten an LSx powered car. More power and a lot easier to work on. Header change alone is way easier.
GoodSpeed150 Ive got an LS sitting on the shelf just need a car to put it into!
is it similar for 2v 4.6s? Gonna do my head gasket soon on my 2v and gonna use this vid
Yes, I think the only difference is that you dont have the phasers on the cam gears.
What size was the two oil pick up tube bolts?
Can you give me the link to the ford motorsports website where you bought this stuff??
performanceparts.ford.com/Default.asp
I know this is probably a RUclips UI defect, but it would be nice to have a link to part 1 from here.
Just fixed that! Thanks

WESTCOASTJIM Probably because most people would have lost interest if this was the first thing everyone saw.
That is exactly why
_Gross is correct, we pushed these videos back because we didn't want to put people to sleep before doing any performance mods to the car.
+David Pratte I enjoy all your videos but I get it...
If I send you guys money, will you post videos more often?
Twice a week isn't often enough? You're killing us, Nat, you're killing us! :P
It's the only channel worth watching!
How many hours would you estimate for the work for both part 1 and 2?
Oh man, for us it was a solid 2-3 days work, but an experienced Ford 4.6 mechanic could probably bang it out in 8-10 hours.

your a tidy man Pete!
I love a clean and tidy work place even though most of the videos only show how messy it is!
thank u very much, i have an 05' basically the same, thank for the info as i have to re-time mine😔
Its not a great job but once you get the hang of it, you'll have no issues doing the timing. Good luck!
Been nice if you showed how to time it
How much would a mechanic typically charge to replace a timing chain system and a oil pump?
Greetings from 2022, Ford in Colorado quoted me 4 grand, oof
@@javimel13jm wow crazy. I actually got rid of that 2002 does expedition Eddie Bauer edition like 6 months ago. Had to sell it to the junk yard for 1k. Hurt to do that but i had no choice :( the car was perfectly fine other than that knocking sound it would make
@@javimel13jm thats a rip off
@@robertswift6101 yeah I eventually built up the courage to do the cam phasers and vct solenoids myself at 129k and runs great now but I know the chain and tensioner is next

They're all listed in here with their respective part numbers (M-6004-****), just pick the one for your engine or use the part number to find it from other vendors like Summit (sometimes has cheaper prices).
I am working on the same type of engine, but my biggest problem is to get the timing right.
wow, that's a lot of work! but now I know!
Improper timing and hammering crankshaft pulley potentially fucking up crank shaft bearings. A lot of yikers in this vid.
is that the 2v or 3v
3v
so this should be the same for the2v
I'll get ya'll tix to the Brickyard 400. Bring your mobile garage and fix my 2002 Explorer which is making a timing noise and throwing a misfire code.
didn't change the oil filter
Damn 3v mustangs.
You left out priming the oil pump and pre filling the oil filter!
Unplanned episode??? It's a high mileage ford v8 it was going to need a chain kit xD
