    I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Brett in 1981 in a television production of Macbeth filmed here in Los Angeles. Piper Laurie played lady Macbeth. During the six weeks of production Jeremy was a kind man and a giving actor. I was 18 years old and starting my career. He was kind enough to agree to come give a lecture at my previous high school theatre class. I drove into Hollywood to his home and picked him up and off we went . Me a teenage actor wanting to learn from him and he a world renowned actor willing to teach. For two hours he answered questions and recited dialogue for us. It was a marvelous day and it was always amazing watching him work. For a short time we stayed in touch and I will always think of him kindly.

      William E. Wright, Jr. Correct, Jeremy one's said:"he wouldn't cross the street to shake the man's hand", but Jeremy was an extrovert and Sherlock was most definitely an introvert, that and some other quirks the man most have had (those are obvious in the books) made Jeremy Brett say that, I'm sure.

    • @thatdutchguy2882
      @thatdutchguy2882 8 лет назад +6

      William E. Wright, Jr. Agatha Christie said she really detested her best character Hercule Poirot, that she wanted to kill him off many times ➡🔺Spoiler alert⬅ before she eventually did.
      Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had the same relationship with Homes in the end and tried to kill him off in a waterfall in Austria before, fan protest and commercial interests brought him back.

      The stories may remain faithful to the originals...but that has no bearing on this man's depiction of Holmes. I never saw the appeal. I've seen a number of people play Holmes...I was never quite satisfied with any of them...I DO find both of the Watsons from the tv series believable...One emphasized the warmth and kindness of Watson, while the other seized upon the machismo of the character, being very believable as a retired military man...But Bret was never what I pictured for Holmes...

      I disagree respectfully, because I think Cumberbatch and Brett are different types of Sherlock Holmes. Brett is the best Sherlock Holmes of the 19th century. No other actor comes close. When the time came to make Sherlock set in the 21st century, the creators of the series and Cumberbatch did something very clever. They did not try to do a Sherlock Holmes of the 19th century, because competing with Brett's Holmes is like Emily Blunt competing with Julie Andrews' Mary Poppins. It just does not work. So instead, they completely remade Cumberbatch's Sherlock Holmes as a asperger syndrome type (which is very topical) and they created a 21st century context for his cases - and the result was a very entertaining series which did not have the disadvantage of feeling like a retread.

    Brett was simply an angel on earth, he was Holmes, and is the face of the character. The old episodes used to run on my VHS all the time, just as background ambiance.

    I don't just love this man, I adore him. He embodied Sherlock Holmes like no other, even better than the inimitable Basil Rathbone, who remains relevant to this day. If anyone remembers, Brett was part of the cast on Audrey Hepburn's My Fair Lady, where he played the love struck Freddie Eynsford-Hill. He was a dashing man with a keen intelligence, and his character of Holmes was so deviously developed, it felt so real.
    This interview was posted in 2007, but Sir Jeremy Brett died in 1995. Peter Jeremy William Huggins (3 November 1933 - 12 September 1995), known professionally as Jeremy Brett, was an English actor. He was a scion of the Cadbury (chocolate) family in UK.

    Batman was done badly for years, then a director created batman begins. He gave us the batman everyone hoped for. Well, jeremy Brett gave us the sherlock homes that technology and cgi and effects will never be able to improve on. It was absolutely brilliant. And his own health suffered and coincided with the parallel story of homes 'candle lit at both ends' victorian excess. Needs to be recognised more.

    I'm really disgusted by this interviewer insisting that Brett's illness was related to alcohol addiction when he clearly told him that it was his wife's sudden death and overwork. Basically, he was clinically depressed. The interviewer's insistence on talking about that difficult time of his life forced Brett to politely ask if they could move on.
    Btw: Brett's cause of death some years later was heart failure related to a damaged heart from a childhood illness. In the final episodes of the Holmes series, you could see the toll his illness was having on him.

    This interview by ex Fleet Street editor Derek Jameson is shocking. Jeremy Brett would have been in a fragile state at this time and it was Jameson’s responsibility to know that. The fact that Brett kept his composure is a tribute to the good grace of the man. He should have punched Jameson in the face.
