      It’s true. Just like when the camera first pans up from the casino table to Sean Connery in Dr No, “Bond, **lights cigarette** James Bond,” Brett’s Holmes turning around in his Baker Street chair in their very first episode was right on the money from the beginning! “I can strongly recommend a seven per cent solution of cocaine **turns to Watson** would you care to try it?”

      Only in having been popular in the film dept and the silent films have never really been seen. When you are the only one that has been seen, then you are labeled the best, but now we do have more choices and I feel that Brett did the most convincing of the Victorian/Edwardian age Holmes's. Rathbone did a "modern" version in his time and thus was not in keeping with the original character.

    Brett's comments about children watching are very interesting because I fell in love with the programme aged 7, it was the one programme my mother allowed me to stay up late on a school night for. She still talks about how I looked in my dressing gown, with glass of milk, sitting in the rocking chair in front of the fire and the theme music echoing through our small terraced house, definitely one of the highlights of my life.

    • @colinluckens9591
      @colinluckens9591 7 месяцев назад

      I had exactly the same feelings about it as a 12-year-old at the time!!....that first series became an absolute highlight of the week for me....I'll never forget particularly The Speckled Band (watching it for first time - how totally gripping and atmospheric that was!) and the final episode (of that first series) The Blue Carbuncle: I remember sitting on the sofa after the final credits rolled (the day after as I had recorded it), and thinking that it was a bit strange showing an episode set at Christmas at the beginning of summer! But primarily of how powerful and poignant an experience the series had been, showing the true potential of TV fiction when done right (along with slight disappointment it being the final episode of that first series!)....
      Like you I adored that opening sequence, its atmosphere, taking you into the world of the series, and that the original Sidney Paget illustrations featured prominently (at least in that first series) not only in actually showing them during the final credits, and at the commercial breaks, but also in the fact that they DELIBERATELY TRIED TO MAKE THE ACTORS LOOK THE WAY THEY APPEARED IN THE ILLUSTRATIONS, AND ACTUALLY SET UP THE SCENES TO ALSO MIRROR THEM!!
      The makers were obsessive about HISTORICAL AUTHENTICITY down to the smallest details - even the way a striking match would flare up (apparently due to the chemical composition of matches at that time it would have been different)!!!
      Sorry for going on a bit, but all-in-all an unforgettable and superlatively-crafted set of series during a time when television programmes in general were of an infinitely better quality than they are nowadays ❤❤❤

    The tall, dark, handsome Jeremy Brett suffered from rhotacism, dyslexia, an enlarged heart, bipolar and addiction to lithium. His mother died tragically young. He didn’t play but became Sherlock Holmes. He literally shortened his life to complete the series. RIP Mr Brett. Unprecedented. Unique. Unequaled. We are all in your debt.

    • @PointyTailofSatan

      You cant really be addicted to lithium. Believe it or not, the lithium drug is in the form of powdered lithium carbonate put in capsules. It's actually a form of rock, very similar to limestone. The problem with lithium are its side effects, especially with the kidneys, because lithium is not a natural component in the human body.

      I knew this before I saw this video just now, and that he felt he was becoming Sherlock Holmes, in like paranoid, as another personality.
      So while i am watching this interview I thought "he looks much thinner, this other personality hasn't happened yet" but I listened how he talks and if he says "i did" etc.
      But this is just my wacky imagination, when she asked "Do you get letters to you as real people" and Brett is looking off like an alien beamed into his mind. I can't imagine today people thinking they are real, i never did, what a strange question, but i am sure it was popular with kids back then

    I had the great good fortune to see these two wonderful actors in The Secret of Sherlock Holmes, at Wyndham’s Theatre, on a visit to London. I had been told to line up in Leicester Square for last-minute theatre tickets, where you never knew what might be available until you got to the head of the line. I couldn’t believe my luck, because I had watched every episode of the Granada TV series and was a huge fan, and when I got to the theatre that night, I was absolutely spellbound. BTW, Mark Hamill is and always will be the best Joker. I was just making an example.

    • @kavinskysmith4094
      @kavinskysmith4094 4 года назад +2

      I seriously didnt pick up on the casting change until I started going through the series top to bottom just a few weeks ago after literally having grown up with the show as a kid, as its as if Watson just simply aged 15 years with the jump between his fight with moriarty and sherlock coming back 3 years latter in the first episode of the next season, which was his first, as unkind as that sounds, although I do miss Burke (young watson) abit now in knowing that.
      as he matched Holmes Energy and seemed to foil it abit more, Which Hardwicke doesnt seem to do, he just stands back and lets it run off it seems. although yet again, you could easily write that off being a change to the character with the time and him just being glad to have his friend back and thus now, atleast temporarily being abit more forgiving of it.
      but if you must replace a good actor, best it be with a good actor, which is what was done lol
      and thank bloody god they didnt replace him with a bafoon like they had watson be in the Basil Rathbone movies, like such an excelent sherlock, surrounded by a bafoon who is more of a threat to him than the enemy, like regardless if they were friends or not, or he was intended to be the comic relief, he really was far more of a liability than anything else.
      and then you had that idiot named lastrad with a D, who couldnt be anymore the village idiot with a badge if he tried, like wasnt one comic relief enough?

      mark prescott Some actors die "as their role" ... just as Heath Ledger was brilliant as the Joker in Batman and died "on the job". The death underlines the brilliance of their work and might be better than having them to live long lives always being "defined by" that pinnacle of their career ... like those one-hit-wonder music groups from the 70's/80's which are touring with their one hit nowadays.

      In terms of speaking voice yes in terms of temperament completely no! Brett had a nervous breakdown from constantly having to be a repressed utterly cerebral Victorian figure when in reality he was a larger than life jovial happy go lucky fellow. Did you notice around the middle of the episodes in his partnership with Hardwicke how severely his hair was cut back? He did that himself in a moment of madness trying to escape the role!

      Michael James
      Yes after The Sign Of Four, His hairstyle had changed. Jeremy was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Work, the death of his wife all lead to his breakdown.
      Putting all of this aside, JB is the quintessential and definite Holmes.

    The best Sherlock Holmes ever! Our Russian is unique and perfected, but Jeremy Brett was the best, the most fascinating, original and impeccable. He knew the stories so meticulously! I adore Jeremy, he is in my heart forever. He is iconic! But as a teacher of English, I can't resist saying a few words about his posh accent. It is perfected by him! I learned it listening Jeremy, and his pronunciation is the best, most appealing and so infectious. It is such a regret he passed away...

    The only dreadful thing in the otherwise completely unmatched Granada series is watching Brett’s health obviously deteriorate over the episodes. You can just hear the effect of all that smoking, voluntary rather than part-related, creeping in under Jeremy’s perfect voice in this interview. His mental health suffered terribly too for the reasons he hints at here. Their filming schedule was also a deeply punishing one which is why his first Watson, in a dynamic I actually preferred, left the production so as to be there for his children growing up. Which is not to say a word against Hardwicke who’s Victorian voice, manners and easy heroism were perfect for the role, Brett’s chemistry with Burke was more one of equals, however, and the latter made a more convincing presence in terms of military bearing and romantic lead.
    Brett was a sunny, sanguine and jolly man who nevertheless - and how his Holmes could pronounce that word alone! - took his craft desperately seriously and occasionally felt totally trapped by the role as a result. Sometimes wish they hadn’t made the last episodes as they’re painful to watch, especially as they contain the story of The Dying Detective, which is as ever brilliant but also awfully close to the truth.

      100% right on David Burke-- his speaking style and enunciation was a match toe-to-toe with Brett's. The only thing that could make me accept Hardwicke's Watson is knowing that it was Burke who encouraged him to do it, and that his Watson is *supposed* to be older and perhaps a bit broken by having thought he lost Holmes once. (and also now by hearing how enthusiastic Brett was about working with Hardwicke here-- it helps to know that he didn't resent Brett off camera like his Watson sometimes seems to toward Holmes.)
      The real proof is Burke's performance at the end of the Final Problem, versus Hardwicke's in the same scene at the beginning of the next series. David Burke does not get enough credit for being half of what made the first series sing!!

      I agree Jeremy Brett and David Burke had a nice dynamix. I did like David Burke as Watson better was a little disappointed when he chose to leave but understood why. with that said though I think Edward Hardwick did a great job as well.

      Great point. Indeed I grew up with Basil Rathbone as a kid in the 1960s. However on seeing Jeremy Brett, I never looked back except to wonder what it was I saw in Basil Rathbone in the first place who now comes of as shallow, tacky and cheesy. Well as they say everything is relative. When I was kid I bought an awful single, 'Ballroom Blitz' by the Sweet. Utterly dreadful and I regretted it after about two weeks (Led Zeppelin were a lot better at the time). Then I discovered genius: Mozart, Bach, the Doors, kd Lang, Billie Holliday, the Beatles and Cab Calloway and never looked back!

      Ihaba S I agree with the first sentence but my point is: how can you not be compared if you take on the role? Brett's Holmes is like Rubinstein's Chopin - everybody who tackles it will be compared to that perfection and found to be lacking in some way or another even if only slightly. It's a pity in a way but I think a more than fair price for the gift of their performances.
      I've not seen Cumberbatch's but I think I'd spend the whole time feeling sorry for him not quite measuring up and that would ruin the enjoyment for me.

    • @Sabrintb
      @Sabrintb 9 лет назад +8

      Ihaba S They're different portrayals of the same character, even if immensely different, comparisons are inevitable. I like both too, but I'll agree with @CommissionerSleer. There'll never be a Sherlock Holmes quite like Brett. Even today I still can't read a Holmes story without picturing Jeremy Brett. I imagine he's the exact Holmes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle imagined when writing his novels. David Burke too, nailed Watson magnificently.

Is check it out for a few days then when I had to return it I would ask if I can re check it out again right now they would say yes as long as there's no one else that's requested it. My fingers were always crossed as they checked and breathed a sigh of relief when they said I can have it again cuz there's no holds on it. Then the excitement of knowing that tape was mine for another few days so I can go home and re-watch it again .... Ah good times and memories.

    Such wonderful actors with such a handle on their roles! Brett is Sherlock Holmes to me...so completely realised...because in the stories he isn't just this calculating, controlled, machine...Conan Doyle describes him as a 'bohemian' full of gestures and enthusiasms (and of course addictions) which feed into him as a character and make him believable and Brett really brings that out! But one shouldn't ignore Edward Hardwicke...just because his character is the straight man...his Watson is excellent! They both really got into their roles (especially Jeremy Brett by all accounts!) and they are definitive!
