    He was a superb singer and a romantic leading man who, initially did not want to portray Sherlock Holmes. He was a very handsome man and Twiggy is beautiful here. He had a childhood illness that left scarring of the heart valves, leading to an enlarged heart and to his early death. He was the greatest Holmes ever, insisted on keeping to Conan Doyle's dialogue in the stories. He left behind a body of work as Holmes that will never be surpassed.

His beautiful face would have been hidden, but his power, grace, and leopard-like sensuality, along with his gorgeous voice, would have blown everybody else off the stage. I have no doubt every woman in the audience would have ended up on the floor. I know I would have. I wish he'd had the chance to do it. He would have made a great Phantom Of The Opera. He was a great actor. His performance as Sherlock Holmes proves that. I watch it regularly. The acting is superlative. He had to literally drain out his own ebullient personality to portray this dark and eccentric character. That really took some doing. It it so brilliant, that I almost believe that he existed. David Burke and Edward Hardwick actually looked like Victorian gentlemen. They did not have as much to say, but their acting was brilliant. In real life, Jeremy was a really charming man. The difference between him and Holmes is remarkable.

    His singing is so beautiful I wish he'd recorded an album of traditional songs or something. It's not just that he has a good voice and an attractive timbre which he does... but his enviable diction in ordinary speech carries into his singing and his phrasing is, as a consequence, exquisite. Add to that a natural talent for emoting and he's really perfect for this type of music, and needless to say this is my favorite rendition of the song "she moves through the fair." ^_^

    The nearest thing is "Bending the Willow: Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes" by notable Sherlockian Scholar David Stuart Davies. It is not actually a biography, as it focuses mostly on the Granada production, but as Jeremy WAS that production, it has a lot of first hand interviews and interesting tid-bits about him and his life during his years making the show. Sadly, it's incredibly rare and copies sell for stunningly high prices. I wish you the best of luck finding it.

    Unbelivable that this sensible man played Sherlock Holmes this way he did. No wonder the role has killed him, as they are used to say.

    • @AlydiaRackham
      @AlydiaRackham 4 года назад +12

      Actually...I think it helped him a great deal, rather than killing him. He had depression, and an enlarged heart, but he dearly loved playing Holmes. And after his wife died, he used it to process, and to focus on something else. I think what killed him was his heart, and the smoking. He had a very difficult life.

    Oh this is just delightful ❤ Came here via a kind fellow watcher of Neil Sean’s Podcast about the forthcoming musical of Twiggy’s life. Always loved Twiggy, such an icon and inspiration in my teens. An unstarry multi talented star if ever there was one. First fell in love with Jeremy Brett as D’Artagnan and loved everything he was in. Such talent and charisma. Shed quite a few tears at his solo, as it was one of my late mother’s favourite songs. I can see this becoming a favourite video. 😊👏🏻❤

    @JuanMacready: And I assume Rathbone was a gentleman like Brett, he would have respected him for masterfully portraying the real Sherlock Holmes and maybe envied him for being able to play the role in such a great production so true to the original stories instead of the trash he had to be in. ^_^

    And Twiggy is cute. I didn't knew she could sing.

    Oh dear. I feel I am very late to the party. I hadn’t even HEARD of Jeremy Brett til a couple of months ago. But here I am watching old shows and series with him in it just because of his Sherlock Holmes! I feel like Rip Van Winkle just awakening from a long sleep. I’ve never been a tv watcher, but it is rather nice to be able to catch these things, when i want on RUclips. After his Sherlock portrayal and his Max de Winter role, I’m hooked! There’s just something about him..... Very mesmerizing.

      @AMT yes, the studio didn't like Jeremy Brett's singing voice, so they had a studio singer, Bill Shirley, dub him.

      @AMT my late partner and I saw Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke recreate their rôles onstage in 1988 in London, in the stage play by Jeremy Paul, "The Secret of Sherlock Holmes." We went to London twice a year for 27 years and pretty much for me these trips were all about the theater. For this particular show, the tickets were present from the woman who was our agent for the short-term holiday flats we rented for many years.
      Unfortunately, she gave us tickets that were first row center -- unfortunate because there was a fog machine used to recreate 1890s London to which my other half was severely allergic. After the First Act he left, and I finished on my own, while he recovered at a pub off the King's Road in Chelsea, where I met him after the show was over.
      We also saw him once before that on Broadway in a revival of the Frederick Lonsdale play, "Aren't We All," starring Rex Harrison and Claudette Colbert in the mid-80s. What was particularly interesting about that is that Jeremy Brett replaced the actor John Michael King. John Michael King was the original Freddie Eynsford Hill in the very first production of "My Fair Lady!" That was a lovely evening. The late Lynn Redgrave was also in the play, and the first time I saw her on stage was at age 16 in 1967, in the Peter Shaffer one act plays "Black Comedy" and "White Lies," but that is his story for another day. By the way, "The Secret of Sherlock Holmes" is on RUclips with Brett and Hardwicke, but not having seen it I can't vouch for the print.

    • @cynaraslover
      @cynaraslover Год назад

      @AMT I was very lucky to have seen Rex Harrison on stage three times. In addition to the Lonsdale play, my other half and I saw him, also with Ms Colbert, in William Douglas-Home's "The Kingfisher," in 1978 when I was 27 years old. Ms Colbert, then 75, was absolutely ravishing, but Harrison's was by far the bigger role. The show is stolen by the great character actor George Rose, playing Harrison's manservant.
      We also saw Harrison in Maugham's "The Circle," with Glynis John's and Stewart Granger, in Boston.

    • @cynaraslover
      @cynaraslover Год назад

      @AMT Glynis Johns was about 67 or 68 when I saw her in "The Circle."
      I saw Gielgud on stage twice -- when I was 15 I went with my aunt to see Gielgud in the title role of Chekhov's "Ivanov," co-starring Vivien Leigh (an obsession of mine since age 9, whom I also saw in "Tovarich" when I was 12) at the Colonial Theater in Boston. Ms Leigh was only in the first act as her character dies. I still have my playbill from 56 years ago. Then, in 1988, we went to his final West End show, "The Best of Friends," which is essentially three people reading letters they have written to each other. By then he was in his mid-80s, and although he was marvelous, clearly had issues remembering lines. I have had really a charmed Life as a theater-goer. It wasn't until my 50s did it occurred to me that as a teenager I was very blasé about having seen Vivien Leigh on stage not once, but TWICE. Now I am absolutely marveling that I had such experiences.
