    I grew up in Monticello New York during the mid 60’s and early 70’s. As an African-American living in this wonderful Jewish community was one of the best moves my mother made. Everyone lived in peace and harmony. I didn’t feel discrimination while living there. My mother and father worked for the Ruebens who owned the large laundry company and insurance agency. It was a safe beautiful town. I admire and miss those days.

    To a guy who isn’t Jewish, I envied the sense of community that Jewish folks had to gather during the hot summers in the Catskills to have so much fun with the beautiful pools, lush golf courses, great food and interesting activities. As I was looking for Catskills related videos at RUclips, I first found videos of the dilapidated hotels that saddened me, I had no idea that the clientele dried up, the resorts closed and the facilities could no longer be maintained.
    No one doesn’t have a favorite Jewish comedian, as a kid I loved Jackie Mason, Henny Youngman, Rodney Dangerfield, Jack Benny, George Burns and Gracie. They were all on TV often, in the 90’s Seinfeld. I could imagine spending a summer, being able to see a constant diet of wonderful comedy. Take too sad that the era is over I would have loved.

    Way back when my buddies and I wanted to see Shirley Bassey at Concord but couldn''t afford it. Surrounded by guards as hotel entrances were we made our way into hotel via the back laundry chute manual small lift or elevator two at a time. Wound up on high floor and as we entered floor guard could be seen at far corner. Straightened our ties we walked the other way but got to see Shirley and entertainment that night back then

    I grew up in the Catskills in the 50's 60's and 70's. My father operated Fun fare Roller Rink and Amusement Park, miniature golf, a driving range and horse riding stable in Ferndale , halfway between Liberty and Monticello. We were gentiles and prospered from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
    After that Sullivan Co was a Ghost town except for weekends. When all the Jewish people came up from the city they mostly stayed at the Hotels. The hotels had all kinds of shops and they had no need to leave the hotel premises.
    We prospered because of those Those that came to the area to work at the hotels and the Orthodox Jews that stayed in camps and bungalows.
    As the hotel population and entertain aged and moved on they left it in a ghost town predicament because the hotels NEVER really did anything to help the area grow. It was destitute in the Winter barely be I g able to keep the heat on so many area residents began to leave as well and places began to close up. My whole family one by one moved to South Carolina
    I've never been back since 1975

      Pam Weinberg > I ran around these areas between Liberty and Monticello year round from the late 60's til the mid 80's. I stopped going because I was paralyzed in 1988. My wife and I camped and enjoyed most everything I could when I was able. I believe I skated in the skating rink and met so many girls there and made friends so many times I lost count. But this part of the Catskills defined my youth. I grew up in lower Westchester and couldn't wait for friday which meant I would hop on my motorcycle and head up route 17 to the mountains.
      It was so different from the city. (NYC) I hated the city but had to work there to raise my family. The people in the city suck. It was so different in the Catskills. The people were nicer. It was just great.

    Interesting, yet i doubt if it will become like it was in the 1960s. I heard that many yeshivas took over the old hotels like THE WINDSOR,. It's the perfect place to create an orthodox jewish community. Perfect place for Mikvehs. Yeshivas look into Sullivan County.

      Air conditioning, cheap airfare, and less "family" cohesion lead to the failure. Now those families ship their children to 8 week camps upstate while their parents travel to Europe.

    Intermarriage killed the Catskills. The Gentile spouse had no great affinity for Jewish food like Gefilte Fish, Yiddish stories and jokes, Jews talking about their Jewish friends and places. When the Jewish spouse turned to his wife(husband) and sd where do you want to go this summer for vacation ,why would she say "oh the Catskills"! Intermarriage rate is 50%. That killed the Catskills! Sad but true!

    • @MrScottie68
      @MrScottie68 3 года назад +1

      bftime1 ....Catering to one specific target group is what killed the Catskills. If intermarriage, as you suggest, started becoming more and more common, the resorts should have gone with the flow; including different food offerings, entertainment etc. Failing to do so is a setup for future failure which is exactly what happened as the older core Jewish population aged and died and was not being replaced by younger generations.

    • @bftime1
      @bftime1 3 года назад +3

      @@MrScottie68 The Jews who went to the Catskills wanted the atmosphere as exactly presented---Jewish to the extreme They wanted the food as prepared, the Jewish Comedians, hearing Yiddish spoken. You can't have a different hotel and expect them to go. Once you do that then competition is too great among all the venues. Remember antisemitism was common during these years and people felt comfortable being with others who shared their background.

    • @RogerBates7

      As they say... The 3 A's... Airfare, A/C, Assimilation. This point falls under the latter. Once Jewish families were welcome at other (and more exotic) places, could go there affordably and no longer had to escape NYC for entire summers, the mountains lost their edge. Those 3 things undermined the culture of going there and it didn't pass to the next generation in the 70s & 80s.

    • @victorblock3421
      @victorblock3421 10 месяцев назад

      Intermarriage was a result of the filth & stench of Liberalism. That was just one of several reasons. Most of the Jews who populated the Catskills in the old days were communists. Judaism had a place but just a small place. Communism was their new religion. Judaism for them was to be mocked, ridiculed and sidelined.
