    I’m on week two and my acne is definitely getting better , the irritation was pretty uncomfortable for the first 7-9 days but I found a great trick to help it. I wash my face with cediphil gentle wash then while my face is still wet I apply cevae night lotion let it dry then I apply a pea size of differin gel let it dry again and lastly I apply one more layer of moisturizer.

My skin care routine has become much more simpler and effective. I love cetaphil and cerave products and use their foam cleansers/ gentle scrubs and moisturizers with spf. Besides drinking lots of water and wearing makeup as little as I can :)

    Hi Doctor! Quick question. I've seen a simple and effective night acne routine using the following:
    1. Benzoyl peroxide wash 10%
    2. Differin adapalene gel 0.1%
    3. Facial moisturizing lotion
    You've mentioned that using benzoyl will make the adapalene less effective. What should I do first? 😥

    • @ArsalanAspires
      @ArsalanAspires  3 года назад +6

      Hi thanks for your question. What I meant with less effective is that it can over irritate the face, especially if you use benzoyl peroxide over 2.5%. Epiduo contains adapalene and benzoyl peroxide 2.5%, but this is prescription only, which means a dermatologist must see your skin first before recommending. This is the safest option if you want to use benzoyl peroxide at the same time.
      Some dermatologists will recommend alternating days, one day Differin and one day benzoyl. Have you seen improvements doing your skin routine that way?
      I always recommend using the Differin at night as the last step on a dry face, so you can use the moisturizer before this.

    ..... it is absolutely ok to use benzoyl peroxide with adapalene. It's called epiduo, and it's sold as a prescription. Differin even makes a benzoyl peroxide face wash to use with adapalene. These are complimentary ingredients.

    • @ArsalanAspires
      @ArsalanAspires  3 года назад +1

      Hi, galderma laboratories, the manufacturer makes the epiduo and they have a formulation that uses both. Yes. However there is a reason why it’s still only prescription. Your provider must see you in person to make the recommendation to use both. I personally would not use it until I have the clearance to go ahead and add an extra ingredient like benzoyl peroxide. Yes they are chemically stable to use, but are they still effective when mixed with other manufacturers of both products? This is what I was getting at.
      Also, because the free-radical reaction of benzoyl peroxide can break down the keratin, therefore unblocking the drainage of sebum (comedolytic), this level of oxidation can lead to it being less effective when used with differin. Efficacy measures as Acne appearance. Differin has worked for some people while epiduo has not. Everyone will react differently. So it’s best to have that consultation first.
      Benzoyl peroxide comes in 10%, which epiduo and epiduo forte goes up to 2.5%. Using a formulation of bpo over 2.5 May increase risk of chemical burns, which ultimately is counter productive and ineffective. More ingredients is not always better. I will make a separate video that goes into more detail. 😌

    • @ArsalanAspires
      @ArsalanAspires  3 года назад +7

      Hi thank you for your great questions.
      Your 1st question: usually once daily at bedtime. Do not use more than once a day. Before using, gently clean the affected skin with a mild or soapless cleanser and pat dry then apply.
      Question 2: If your skin is too sensitive or gets easily irritated, you can alternate days, on days off you can use the BHA. Just make sure not to use it with differin. It is best though to wait to see how your skin adjusts to the differin before adding the bha to your routine. So personally I would wait wait off until maybe after the skin purge. The benefit is knowing whether or not which product is doing the job.
      Question 3: This is entirely up to you. On days when you don’t use differin you can exfoliate. However avoid exfoliating to prevent over exfoliation and thinning on the differin day.
      I think bottom line, the goal is to use the least amount of ingredients to provide the greatest amount of results. More ingredients is not always better.
      I hope this helps. 🤞

    hey doc, i’ve been using differin for a while now but i’m worried that i’ve been using it incorrectly. i was confused about this when initially starting treatment-whether i apply it all over my face or just on the affected area-and i ended up just applying it on my cheeks (since that is where my acne is). additionally, is it better to apply face moisturizer before or after using the gel? i’ve seen some dermatologists recommend the former, while others recommend the latter. lastly, my acne has “gone away,” but the acne scars it left behind are very prominent: hyper pigmentation, skin discoloration (etc). should i purchase the differin acne scarring treatment, and use it alongside the differin gel, or will just the different gel suffice?

      Hi, thank you so much for your question! Although you may hear of using benzoyl peroxide at the same time of differin, I’m personally not a fan of using too many ingredients especially if one of them is working already. The chance of skin irritation increases.
      However with that said, some dermatologists may say it is okay to use benzoyl peroxide while using differin, but if you decide to do so: I would stick to a 2.5% one as this is the amount used in the prescription products of epiduo.
      I hope this makes sense 🤞

      I use a 5% benzoylperoxide wash in the mornings! Not yet started with Differin though. I can say that leaving BP on for only a minute seems to have helped with acne a lot! Not entirely, that’s why I am considering adding Differin. And by keeping it on for a minute only (not a full night or day) it has never caused any irritation! Before I used BP as a leave on and that was horrible. Maybe try BP in the morning and then rinse off, see how that goes?

      Hey thanks for your question. Epiduo is an exception as the manufacturer has figured a formula to combine both and is FDA approved and is Rx only. There is more irritation involved and a dermatologist needs to see if it is necessary for your skin or not to add two strong active ingredients that both promote skin turnover. You would be surprised that most people can do fine with one or the other with consistent use. Exceptions do exist however.
      I hope this clears that up.

    • @ArsalanAspires
      @ArsalanAspires  3 года назад +4

      Hi, thanks for your question. Although it is appropriate to combine benzoyl and Differin. To avoid over medicating your face and increasing irritation, especially if it’s your first time using it, I would advise using Differin for the whole course of treatment first and if it fails to provide relief then I would add the benzoyl and alternate days.
      Others recommend using it at the same time, but the best measure is to have a certified dermatologist look at your skin and recommend a regimen tailored just for you.
      So that you don’t overdue it. I recommend not going above benzoyl 2.5%, as prescriptions like epiduo and epiduo forte only combine the adapalene at this strength of benzoyl. I’m sorry about the confusion.
      I hope this helps 🤞

    I have been using this for 40 days and my acnes are bigger (before they seemed smaller). Yesterday some were itchy. I reduced the amount applied and the itchiness went away. From the other video I noticed that itchy is not the sign of purging. Is it irritation then? No new pimples, I guess. Just the old ones getting bigger and they kind of pop out. Is this a step back in my fight, Doctor? Thank you for the advice.

    Hello Dr. Arsalan Aspires I was wondering if Differin is right for me.
    I have mild blemishes (during that time of the month, PMS ect) and breakouts when stressed the usual...I have constant sebaceous filaments in the t zone and microcomedones, clogged pores. I feel like I have reached a plateau with my skincare and I am not sure if I really NEED Differin but could possibly benefit from it, to keep everything under control. I have already incorporated a retinaldyehyde in my routine and figured I could eventually bump it up to Differin. Would this also help with reducing the eventual purge period/sensitivity to Differin? I am 26 years old. Thank you for your quality content!

    • @ArsalanAspires
      @ArsalanAspires  3 года назад +6

      Hello, thanks for your feedback and question!
      If this is in the form of a moisturizer you can use this beforehand. However make sure you apply the adapalene onto a dry face. There is also the option to doing the niacinamide/zinc in the am too. Whichever you can be most consistent with.
      I’m glad you asked because not all skin care ingredients pair well together but since studies have shown that niacinamide reduces the irritation of retinoids, I am in favor of them. 👍

    Hi Dr Arsalan,
    Tretinoin 0.05% cream and Differin Gel is the same powerful level?
    I used Tretinoin 0.05% cream for two months every other night and follow all the steps of Moisturizer and Sunscreen but I am concerning that I don't get any purge, just tiny bit of irritating but I can see my skin texture starting change so it is normal not getting the purge or this means that Tretinoin not working on my skin?
    Thank you

    • @ArsalanAspires
      @ArsalanAspires  3 года назад +3

      Hi, I really appreciate your thoughtful question. Most of the studies when comparing differin 0.1% vs tretinoin 0.05% conclude: “Adapalene gel 0.1% showed equivalent efficacy and was significantly better tolerated than tretinoin cream 0.05% in patients with mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris.”
      The small irritation may be your skins way of purging on a smaller level. Purging does not indicate if it works. A clearer skin texture indicates if it has worked. 😀
      I hope this helps 🤞

      Hi, thank you for your question! Yes, it will help clear out existing pore blockages and keeps new ones from forming. For the closed comedones, they have the added benefit of smoothing and softening the skin too. The first month or two on retinoids is going to be usually rough, but afterwards you can see a big difference with the texture.

    • @ArsalanAspires
      @ArsalanAspires  3 года назад +1

      Hi, thank you for your question. It depends on how severe the acne is. For most people I recommend just starting off with differin and using it for the recommended amount of time.
      If it doesn’t work, then I would recommend possibly adding an additional product. This is because of the excess irritation that can occur. So separating them is generally a good idea, and some recommend that. But personally I wouldn’t overwhelm the face with 10% bp during adapalene.
      If I had to choose a benzoyl solution, it would be 2.5% and not 10% because of irritation. I would also seek advice from a dermatologist as a second opinion.
      I hope that helps. 🤞

    Is it okay if I use differin gel and Cerave resurfacing retinol serum together but on alternating days?

      Hi, thanks for your question, Journie. Using the gel and serum on alternating days would be fine.

    hi!! I’ve been using differin for quite some time now and at times I see changes and other times I don’t. it almost seems like the product made my skin break out more in areas it never did before and I don’t know what I should do. I use there clear skin line but it’s not helping. I have heard people use benzoyl peroxide and the gel together and it works for them? I just bought there face wash of it which is 5% should I try to use them together or just start the benzoyl peroxide because I’m aware of the gel not working for me. Would you recommend me using other face washes and moisturizers and still using the gel to see if anything changes or should I completely stop. I haven’t started using the benzoyl peroxide yet cause I’m aware it can cause more irritation especially with me I have noticed the gel has made me more red then ever. I feel like quitting it because it isn’t helping me I just don’t know what I should use next? please anyone let me know good things to use, I have heard a lot about cerave I think I might try their stuff

    Hello dr! I am on my first week using adapalene on mild acne and i already see improvements. My question is, if after this my skin has completely cleared up, when should i stop using it? Or should i use it forever?

    Would you recommend using differin twice a week washing with cetaphil before use, and on the off days using a 2.5% salicylic acid cleanser?

    I like to use Paula’s choice exfoliant. Should I alter between the exfoliant and differin. Is the result still going to be the same even if I’m using differin once every two days?
