I’m actually a supervisor at the plant that builds these skid steers, and I found this video satisfying, that same machine was built in my hometown of Sanford NC and I started building these when I was 18, I’m 25 now
I have a 2018 299D2 XHP with the land management package & it is an absolute beast, love it. I use it mainly for forestry mulching using an AFE disk mulcher. I also have extra machine guarding on the cab & that covers the engine compartment. I'm glad I watched your video to see how it does in the snow & it is quite impressive, never expected that. Happy New Year to you & your family! God Bless!!!
Had two wheeled Cat skid steers and thought they were great. There is a reason Cat has been at the top of the industry for 50+ years. Visibility was the only reason I went with the John Deere when I switched to a tracked machine. Awesome visibility in the Deere
Well it had snow tracks, so that’s why it performed well. I think Cat has improved their compact equipment recently, although I dislike the serviceability and it’s impossible to see out the back.
I have the same exact machine, I had a brand new 289 before it, And you aren't kidding with a Night and day difference. Is worth every penny, Puts Every Other machine Something to work for. The other machines have features that are good but all the features are good on this machine. I should be a spokesperson for Caterpillar.
I was a Case guy till they dropped the cummins engines, I am now converted to Takeuchi (they have hydraulic pilot controls), i put snow track on my tl8 and snow tires on the ts60v and have no issues pushing snow, the tl8 did suck with stock track, i installed narrow winter tracks and run them all year, but my track machine only sees dirt in the summer.
I have a Kubota SVL 75 that is also used for snow removal in the winter. Now I did spend the money on some camoplast winter tracks. I also bought traction m studs. I can honestly say those studs are still sitting in the box in my shop. I have never needed them. This machine has a 8’ box on the front for plowing. Pushes that box without a struggle. I also have a snow bucket for pushing back banks in the HOA it’s left at for the winter. Though the cab is fairly noisy the machine itself has been extremely reliable and performs way beyond my expectation in the snow. My one big complaint with Kubota are the pins and bushings. Not so great.
2003 john deere 2210 is what I use,I plow a quarter mile long driveway, today it's a john deere 1025r, they both are very easy to maintain and very easy to use in small areas or in larger ones.
I have a 299. I can't wait to terminate my lease on this piece of junk! The tracks only last 500 hours ($4,000 from cat dealer). Replace instrument screen, replace seat suspension, replace quick attached motor, replace 2 speed sensors, replace alternator, had problems with the DPF I can go on and on and on. I'M NOT IMPRESSED AT ALL WITH THIS PILE OF JUNK. I own a New Holland L175 with 8000 hours and still runs like a champ. That's a real American tractor!
No complaints about the stupid large quick attack that blocks all view when loading a trailer? Or the hoses in the tracks where mud builds up? Or ...... Yea glad I didn't buy
Alex G, I know what you mean with the New Holland, we had to sell ours, it was over 10,000hrs, and we needed the money for a down payment on our new Bobcat, still mad we had to get rid of it.
glad you went with a RAM. 2500 regular cabs are not very easy to find! you 100% will be happy with your choice. I have a 6 speed with a cummins diesel and its been an amazing truck so far.
I prefer case skid loaders over all both track machines and tire loaders. It's always operator preference but I like case controls over cat or Bob cat controls. I been plowing for 14 yrs now and use only case skid loaders and I have no complaints. I live in Minnesota as well and we just had a bunch of heavy snow come through and my skid loader didnt skip a beat! We also put an oversized pump in our machine for more hydraulic pressure to run mill head attachments for paving and it doesnt skip a beat.
Stanley, can you help with a suggestion? I bought a Takeuchi TL6R track loader. It came stock with “block style” tracks. If I bought “multi-bar style” tracks will it greatly increase my snow traction for pushing snow, or minimal improvement. Also how much emphasis should I put on thinking about “ground pressure” of my machine. I’m comparing “ground pressure psi” to that of my 3/4 ton pickup with a snow plow and also that of my Yamaha ATV with snow plow. What’s a better number for pushing snow? My ATV is fantastic at snow plowing but it’s a small blade and I’m sitting outside. Thank you Stanley. By the way, I’m plowing on compact gravel streets and driveways, not any paved. I bought a snow pusher, I don’t have a snow plow for my Track Loader
Stan some track skid loaders like John Deere and Cat have great traction and floatation on soft surfaces and try the John Deere 325G it's a 75 hp track skid loader
Hey Stanley! Check out Millennial Farmer's channel. Ziegler Machinery let him use a Challenger tractor during harvest and let him do an honest review of the MT series Challenger tractor after he used it for harvest. He did a great job of reviewing the tractor against his Deere belted undercarriage tractor and I was impressed with his review. I see you are at a Ziegler dealer, maybe they might do something like that for you. As a Cat Dealer tech when I saw your new video I thought "Oh crap, Stanley don't like the bells and whistles" but it sounds like a "long term test drive" and an honest review might be in order for you. Looking forward to the other forestry video that you teased us with for sure. I've seen the damage one of those 299D loaders can do with that tree/brush hog on it. Some satisfying work for sure!
Best heavy snow mowing equip I have used is JCB Fastrac, Huddig articulated loader/backhoe and Ljungby/Scania wheel loader. We keep most of the best machines for our self i Sweden. Maybe sell them to Canada! :) I haven't seen a BobCat in heavy snow use here. For that type of work we use small "Communal" 4wd 50kph tractors with hydraulic angled blade/iceripper and sand or grit spreader.
I work on a farm and I run a 242d and I love the thing I scrape manure so I'm always on slick concrete and I runs wonderfully. And when it comes to bucket work it's nice and fast but still controllable with a experience operator in the seat.
Monsters of the Midway I also like moving snow, just got a 69 international 444 and it runs good, haven’t gotten to use it in the snow but it’s looking good so far.
I have a 2016 299D2 that I used to dig swimming pools in hard clay here in Houston, Tx. The machine has worked well for almost 3 years, so powerful and its the best investment I ever made. The only issue I ever had was a drive motor broke the planetary gears, but I replaced under warranty and its back to being a beast!
The best snow removal piece of equipment I've got the opportunity to run? I got to try out a Case 321F compact wheel loader with a Kage angle blade. I've been doing commercial snow removal for 20 years and have used a lot different equipment- plow trucks, graders, rubber tired backhoes with snow pushers, skid steer with pushers, and big wheel loaders with pushers (in fact I spent close to 10 hours today in a 644 John Deere with a 16 foot pusher strapped to the front). The reason I liked the compact wheel loader and the Kage plow was plain old comfort and manuverability. It had enough power to get something done, wasn't a tank to get around with, and I didn't feel like I'd been sitting in a metal cage with a peep hole in front all night-which is how I feel after sitting in a skid steer. If I were to start a commercial snow removal company from the ground up tomorrow, my first piece of equipment would probably be a compact wheel loader and a Kage plow or something similar.
Well and Southeast Kentucky where I live it doesn't snow a whole lot but the only thing I really ever used that I like to use was a little Yanmar 1401d with a Quaker loader on it same to push the big heavy wet snow that we get a rare occasions here pretty good
I don't care if I can't see nothing out the back, I want one, I had a fastback one time , couldn't see out the back of it ,but it's still was the cats meow, loved it
We have had a few 299D's, both D and D2, and the John Deere 333 series will out work the cat. Mostly in hydrolic force. We plow snow and do power line ROW restoration year round. The cat does ride nicer than the Deere but for pure lifting and break force of the bucket, even our 329 with 3000 hours out worked the cat 299. Track pattern has a lot to do with traction and the camso W looking track transformed it's ablity to plow snow night and day. The cat is much quieter to opperate inside and outside the machine but the front glass distorts your view very badly in the lower corners when your trying to do fine, light work. The sad part in all of this we have a 333D, 333G Deere bobcat t770 and a cat 236 wheel skid loader. We've had 299D's to demo and had nothing but issues. Had a 279D and it was flawless while we rented it. We traded in our 329D for the 333G and they have done huge improvements. They both have their ups and downs to both if you wanna know shoot me a message
Got my dodge put in an aftermarket remote starter, it works awesome, even over a mile away it still starts at that distance. Plus remote start is a really good thing to have for the 6.7, they don’t like to run when cold plus it will prolong the life of it, also it can take 15 min to warm up on cold days because its a diesel
I've ran bobcat for years,my work bought a 257b and Its love hate for me.the cab entry is garbage and some of the interior parts broke easy.but in mud it's a beast.its fast hydro wise.it does not lack power.u can push n cut for days lol
I have no experience with bob cats but I would have expected every bob cat to be able to push snow. I know they are extremely powerful. I’d love to see a standard bob cat move some snow bc I just feel like how can it not. They are all a power house!
Hi. great vids, have you or will you do any test or checked into JCB 3TS-8T TELESKID. Its heavy 12,600 LB, they say its 74hp but run forestry masticator great. It would be nice see true test on unit instead commercial demo videos. Thanks for all the fantastic info put out here
you should try out a Takeuchi. we have a 07 TL 150 with camopast snow tracks and its monstrous we can't buy the buckets we need we had to build the right manure bucket for it. we did buy a snow bucket and the dealer told us that we would never need a bigger bucket. if you see it now with side and back extensions we put on it almost looks like we cut the bottom of a large dirt bucket out and welded it to the top. now the back is actually caving in from us pushing so we have to put a weld on plate to save the bucket
Bad to the bone brother awesome video some Machine Congratulations on the new dodge truck new plow will look sweet on the Happy Healthy New Year to you and your family brother god bless you and your family
Straight lift is what you see in this video with the black bar. It means the bucket lifts straight vertically in the air. Radial lift is when you raise the bucket due to the changed fulcrum point it lifts at a light angle back towards the cab. Makes it harder to load trucks and what not. Hope this helps!!
By far the best way to move snow if don't have obstacles to throw against is a large tractor mounted snow blower, a snow blower on a cvt tractor would beat anything for road clearing. not so much parking lots. Good view, great comfort, the ag industry is years ahead in comfort. The perfect situation would be a front mount blower and rear blade. On a euro specd(high road speed, front 3pt, pto) 140 horse tractor.
I have this at my work and it’s never let me down snow removal is awesome for it and it can’t really be stopped yea it’s got limits but it’s a work horse
Reason it pushes so good!? The tracks!!! We have the older 77/87 series that came with those tracks. When they went to the 89/99 series they started putting the hard Mini excavator tracks on them, HORRIBLE in the snow! I'm glad u can get these with that new style bottom track frame
Like the video know the feeling of going into a demonstration knowing your going to hate it and then leaving impressed. Just wondering how the side door Volvo unit works in the snow. As I get older that side door looks inviting.👍 Great content 👍👍
Nice video, I own Cat 287B MTL and i can say it's great on snow, i used before S300 bobcat wheel it's not better than Cat also I tried bobcat track and that didn't work good. Last winter i tried on 20" wet snow grip studs and it almost able to push mountain. Grip studs can be used on track or wheels that is really great for deep snow or icy surfaces.
A hybrid. An Hla snow wing or a metalpless maxxpro. It’s a box that can angle and turn into a straight blade, it’s the best of all worlds and blows a box or a bucket out of the water
Wheeled skids are definitely better for if you are just plowing with it in the winter. But I run a 279 tracked skid for plowing with winter tracks on it and the only downside I’ve found is speed roading it between properties. My traction is right up there with the wheels but when I have to push back piles or go through deeper snow tracks is the way to go for sure!
it must be 1 inch of snow that you are pushing, I also do snow removal , some of my friends use a wheel loader and my 257b runs circles around them, and I even see wheel loaders stuck in deep snow
For tracked skid steers, if your looking for reliability and simplicty Takeuchi and Kubota would top the list. If you want best performance for snow removal, Cat or ASV with MTL undercarriage takes the cake
I’ve used my 277 for years pushing snow, even pushed a few bobcats out of the snow! Love the MTL ASV tracks! Very little slippage and great traction. Connects great, able to push large quantities at a time. I have a 84” bucket and 2 blades, 8’ and 12’. I don’t use the 12’ too often, difficult to get to the jobs. Usually I leave it at one of the big commercial jobs that I had. All machines have what they are good at. Just find the best match. Today we still have the 277, and added a 2, 299’s last year. Also picked up a Kubota, but that machine may be looking for a new home. Good machine, just feels off, underpowered. Had to take it in for service several times already. A lot of little things that should not happen on a brand new machine. But I love the swing up door.
I own a CAT 299D2XHP and I’m blown all the time how amazing it is over my John Deere 333G and Volvo MCT135D. I’ve come to learn they all have their special niche. The Volvo is a one arm boom which I prefer for safety, especially when working with a forestry cutter but it doesn’t have the lift capacity or power. The Deere excels as a loader and the CAT as a dozer. Everybody constantly tells me if I want to push snow I need a wheeled skid but that is not true with the CAT. I’m really happy to see someone with your clout make a video showing this.
I do believe the down shift is a part of the 2 speed. I haven’t ran one of those in about a year so I’m not sure if it’s hi or low speed but one of them does torque down under a real heavy push.
Had the opportunity to run a couple cat skid steers a while back by far my favorite skid steers to operate. With that said my experience is limited to cat, bobcat, and mustang. The cats just seemed better thought out and ran more seamlessly. With that said though they are pricey and would likely go with mustang if I had to buy one
I love my Caterpillar machines and Cat has a lot heavier duty undercarriage and you can actually put steel tracks on the 299 but I prefer the C model because of fewer emissions deal and it has hydraulic quick attach versus electronic of the D.
@@danbell6616 ya that's what the C models had and came out with electric on the D's and It was winter in north Dakota and the grease was so stiff because it was cold and wouldn't unlock and it finally broke 2 days later and cost just over $900 to replace the electric ram.
@@danbell6616 they are way over priced! And when the cat mechanic came out with the new part it was the wrong one so he took parts from the broken one and put on the new one to make it work and he said that since it was a new machine that he'd just say that it had a factory defect so I didn't have to pay for anything which was nice especially since there was no factory defect. You can't beat Caterpillar's service!
How much does this Skid Steer cost? Compared to other machines to push snow, maybe a 3/4 ton with a plow can push more efficiently then this expensive little loader?
We are a cat owners of a 259d, 226d, 304e2 all of which have been really good machines. We choose cat because of there service-parts and they stand behind there equipment in are area. That doesn't mean every cat dealer is great, I have heard bad stories of expensive fixes in other parts of the country. I also have been burnt tooooo many times buying from the under dog
We've got a handful of em with the oldest maybe 14-15 years old and they're all reliable. Ours are relatively low hours but have a lot of years on them and only have typical age problems. The biggest issues we've had are a main hydraulic seal on a mini-ex going bad but that's after something like 1400 hours so a fair few hours on it and we have had DEF issues with a newer skid steer but when your fluid goes bad if it's too hot or too cold or too sunny or whatever else it's kind of bullshit.
Exactly! This is very misleading. He never used to be like this. And he calls himself a christian. Same thing with wrangler guy. Unsubed both. This thing keeps popping up on my fed. The comments are the reason for coming hear. Can learn more about what machine to buy from the ones that own one and comment about them.
I someone who is not familiar with heavy equipment specs, I was like there is no way this is only 107 hp... I go look at the spec sheet, actually 276 lb-ft torque at 1500rpm 😍
Stan two things. One) dump that truck if they installed an after market remote start. If it is OEM then fine it would be plug and play. The after market ones butcher the factory wiring harness. I have had two cars that came with after market systems that caused me thousands of dollars in repairs because of the harness damage and how that effects the modern security factory systems. Two) If you seriously looking at a track machine look into the different tracks they have for gravel/dirt work and snow. I have a JD 333 and I love it for finish grade work and the floatation. I did not like it on hard surfaces pushing snow the first year as the tracks would not bite hard packed snow or ice very well. The second year I bought a set of winter tracks. They have a taller lug that is made out of softer rubber. They bit way better on nice and snow. They cost around $900 each IRC. Just remember to NOT use them in the summer on dirt/gravel. They will wear supper fast.
I’m actually a supervisor at the plant that builds these skid steers, and I found this video satisfying, that same machine was built in my hometown of Sanford NC and I started building these when I was 18, I’m 25 now

It's not bells and whistles that a problem. It's a dodge.
I can't give this comment enough likes!!!!
Agree, actually its not even a dodge, it's a RAM.. Fiat motors 😵 wow
Then there’s the gay ass tow mirrors that Ram puts on the trucks.
Couldn't be that the dealer did a shitty job installing the remote start system.

U got a Dodge..
God bless u my friend
Hi. great vids, have you or will you do any test or checked into JCB 3TS-8T TELESKID. Its heavy 12,600 LB, they say its 74hp but run forestry masticator great. It would be nice see true test on unit instead commercial demo videos. Thanks for all the fantastic info put out here
Really appreciate that Smitty, thank you !
Thanks for the reply, its a nice skid steer. and for us big folks it has a side door, no climbing over attachments to enter or exit the machine
you should try out a Takeuchi. we have a 07 TL 150 with camopast snow tracks and its monstrous we can't buy the buckets we need we had to build the right manure bucket for it. we did buy a snow bucket and the dealer told us that we would never need a bigger bucket. if you see it now with side and back extensions we put on it almost looks like we cut the bottom of a large dirt bucket out and welded it to the top. now the back is actually caving in from us pushing so we have to put a weld on plate to save the bucket
Thanks for watching and for the tip!
Snow at the beginning looked like cookies and cream
Bad to the bone brother awesome video some Machine Congratulations on the new dodge truck new plow will look sweet on the Happy Healthy New Year to you and your family brother god bless you and your family
Happy New Year Thomas and thank you for the support!
I'd like to know what you think of the difference between straight lift skid steers and radial lift. Excuse me if I have my terms wrong here.
Case SR200. I will be trying a case TR320 next winter.
As I get older that side door looks inviting.👍
Great content 👍👍
Appreciate it, thank you !
Thank you !
Nice video Stan
Thank you Jamison
Gotta check out the HLA hydraulic plow for skid steers. If u do get one lemme know so I can point out benefits over the snow wolf
What’s the best attachment for a skid loader or tractor loader for moving snow? A Standard bucket, a pusher box or a plow? Pros and cons of each?
Derek
Biggest plow box it can handle. Bucket likes to dig in
A hybrid. An Hla snow wing or a metalpless maxxpro. It’s a box that can angle and turn into a straight blade, it’s the best of all worlds and blows a box or a bucket out of the water
I would like to see how it works in the dirt and muddy ground..!
Were im from! Forget the skids we run wheel loaders and metal-pless or farm tractor with plow in front and snowblower on pto
Not really seeing the awesomeness... What am I missing? I run a wheel skid for snow.... maybe its just good for a track machine?
Bryan Ostrander Kubota’s can take a beating without a doubt.
Thank you and thanks for watching !
I love moving snow! I don't know why, its just really fun!
Jonathan Cook Less messy dirt lol
So when are you getting this cat loader you were talking about on Facebook?
I love my Caterpillar machines and Cat has a lot heavier duty undercarriage and you can actually put steel tracks on the 299 but I prefer the C model because of fewer emissions deal and it has hydraulic quick attach versus electronic of the D.
Clyde Acor they went to hydraulic quick attach on the 2019 models single horizontal cylinder that operates both locks.
@@danbell6616 ya that's what the C models had and came out with electric on the D's and It was winter in north Dakota and the grease was so stiff because it was cold and wouldn't unlock and it finally broke 2 days later and cost just over $900 to replace the electric ram.
Clyde Acor dang that sucks. These oem parts are crazy overpriced.
Compared to other machines to push snow, maybe a 3/4 ton with a plow
can push more efficiently then this expensive little loader?
Well done vid!
Thank you !
Do you have a video of how to properly use a snow box on a skid steer??
Anyone know anything about Avant Tractors with a snowblower and cab? I only just heard of them, how do they compare to ventrac?
I was thinking about buying a 289 in the spring but now I think it's going to be a 299
The only ones l used in the snow was cat grader and 580 case loader&boxblade to with John Deere tractors...
We are a cat owners of a 259d, 226d, 304e2 all of which have been really good machines. We choose cat because of there service-parts and they stand behind there equipment in are area. That doesn't mean every cat dealer is great, I have heard bad stories of expensive fixes in other parts of the country. I also have been burnt tooooo many times buying from the under dog
i use a 279 d caterpillar
love it
Can you test a case tv450. That's case new track loader which is comparable to that 299d
What are your thoughts on the avant 500 to 700 series for Landscape purposes
Hey Stanley I want to know how was your Christmas holiday did you get any tools for Christmas this year ?
Stanley have you looked at the camso z pattern tracks best tracks for snow hands down and I would like to see a review on the kubota svl series
Appreciate the suggestions, thank you !
Well the kind of coin you drop on one, it should be the best snow machine
have you tested case skid loader models?
Stanley do a video of a TL150 OR TL12V2 A BEAST
Thanks Angelo, I will keep that in mind!
Why isn't it comparable to the t770? Aren't they both skid steers
WAIT A MINUTE, THAND ZIEGLER, THE MILLENIAL FARMER JUST DID A DEMO OF ONE OF THEIR AGCO CRAWLERS, I thought you sounded like you were Minnesota
About to buy a 299 d2 Xhp mid year for mulching!
Might want to check out the ASV RT120F, especially if you expect mulching to be the bulk of your work.
dvosberg39 the nearest ASV dealer is like 2 1/2 hours away and the cat dealer is 45 minutes away.
I've loved the few cats I've run but I've never had them long enough to know about reliabilaty
John deere 110 tlb. Smokes on skids power wise. Plus four wheel drive
cool machine but you didnt test it like people will actually use it. Put it on slick pavement. and see what it can do.
Yeah this has the bar style tracks which give decent snow performance. The standard pattern Pad style H/C/ etc style won't be as good.
Exactly! This is very misleading. He never used to be like this. And he calls himself a christian. Same thing with wrangler guy. Unsubed both. This thing keeps popping up on my fed. The comments are the reason for coming hear. Can learn more about what machine to buy from the ones that own one and comment about them.
We run a 279 with the bar style tracks that Cat calls their all season tracks and the traction is right up there with wheels to be honest
I someone who is not familiar with heavy equipment specs, I was like there is no way this is only 107 hp... I go look at the spec sheet, actually 276 lb-ft torque at 1500rpm 😍
Wacker neuson tracked bigger machine 107 hp and 368 torque 136 inch of height to hinge pin waaay better
That guy is a good operator! He's hired!
Nice machine
It is, thanks for watching !
Try case. My brother in law works for Tormont (Cat) and compared to all the skid steer makers out there I will only ever drive either a case or a cat
That’s the variable piston motor swashing back allowing the motor to increase piston stroke increasing torque, decreasing speed
Keep your tracks on ground when pushing use the weight from bucket to put more down pressure on tracks you will move 40 percent more snow load
