- To test if tracks work in deep snow I took the ASV skid steer through heavy wet snow-right into a 9 foot high pile to see if it would get stuck. No mercy- no holding back. I also hooked up with the Experts at ASV and discussed how to get the right tracks for your jobs.

I’d never heard of ASV before your demo with their forestry kit. I now have a RT120 on order which is the same machine without the forestry kit. One of the things that attracted me was the power, wider track and high clearance. Flotation is important to me. I don’t plow snow with skids.
Seeing all this new equipment makes me drool...I'm out plowing in a Michigan 55 rear steer lol
This was all figured out during ww2 in tank suspension disgn, not only with traction but keeping the gun level while on the move to get faster accurate shots off

I was going to comment about where he said "it drives like a tank". Not actually because tanks did sit on the drive wheel and sprocket. They run on road wheels or bogies. But in this application you need the idler for lifting.

I have a small ASV RT40.. The 48" bucket doesn't really work very well for snow around here in Maryland. Heaviest snow is about 2 ft. Really needs a push Snow blade. I bought a 60" wide ATV snowblade. and center mount, and added a power tilt using a ATV Winch and welded it to skid steer plate. Now that's a Snow Mover!
you could consider a 4 in 1 bucket although you wouldn't be able to angle it like a true snowplow it still has a bulldozer mode

Good detailed information on this ASV loader. It came down to Case and ASV for our skid choice.
We were discussing rubber tracks the other day and how when we started in the late 80’s they just weren’t about. Even the 2 ton komatsu 360 backhoe had steel tracks! And now we are seeing track frames that step up to rubber tracks, rather just an old 1950’s style frames with rubber tracks. And the frames on your machine smell right :o)
OK I never thought about machine design or actually who designed them until now and from say a Bobcat standpoint they were possibly are designed for the lever being more in the rear so lifting dirt and rock and heavy pallets it appears the fulcrum point as the man said is on the rear suspension which makes sense and this ASV unit probably wouldn't do as good trying to lift higher because its point is lower and more center to allow for the lateral power transfer. I can see it now makes perfect sense.
As for tracks, I know even the ASV with their snow tracks will get stuck. One of the first things being taught at say a snowcat grooming class is once the tracks start spinning stop or back out. they will just cheese grate there way deeper then you have to dig out. As for tracks the narrower grooving makes sense verses a dirt wider lug because you have more less surface area but more because of the tread so that makes sense also.
I have a John Deere CT33D with the Ext track and it works well for me year round, granted I use it for everything not just pushing snow and I have lots of varying property conditions I use it in like muddy creek/ pond areas, old quarry, agriculture use, clearing snow from drive and road. I am not a professional excavator or a snow removal so but I will have more information this spring when I trade off the JD.

I have an 80 hp cat and I use an 11’ bucket for snow
I’ve used my ASV RC 60 since 2004. Still only about 1100 hours. 4 in 1 bucket allows snow removal in winter (I’ve got five feet on the ground as I type this) and log moving summer( I drop, buck and spit about ten cords a year for personal consumption) I could not survive on my rural property without it! Original Tracks are wearing a bit so I slide sometimes in the slick snow (especially trying to push uphill) I’m going to supplement with iGrip carbide studs. We’ll see if that makes a substantial difference. These machines are incredible!

And haul it away.
CTL loaders have dozer style undercarriage. We have actually put steel tracks on CTL loaders while working in solid rock environments.
MTL loaders have a more forgiving undercarriage for landscape.

Used to have an ASV loved it. Never tried a Terex but wanting to get back in a new ASV and see the improvements.
I’ve had a pt-30 (PT series is the predecessor to the RT series) since 2011, and a pt-75 since 2014. These machines are incredible. They can go places and do things no other machine can. The only time you will see excessive undercarriage wear is in very rocky conditions. I put a tear in the track in my pt-30 5 years ago and it still works just fine. I would have a very hard time convincing myself to switch to a different brand!

We use a 2013 Terex PT60 which is an 60hp ASV machine. Use it in the dirt rough and finish grading lawns most of the year but snow in the winter. It does great job and smooth riding machine. 1st set of tracks lasted 1800hrs and still using the original bogie wheels. Set the machine on high speed for snow removal and cruise around at 11mph which is slightly faster that a new Case wheeled skid loader. It can climb an steep dirt pile too. Like scary steep. The new machines look like they have some even better options and serviceability has gotten easier. Those that have steel bogies, your tracks wear out before your bogies because they have no give thus bad track life which is $$$$$. If ASV tracks last twice as long as competitors, thats 3k savings every 1500hrs.
My Father is getting close to 3,000 hours on the steel imbed Bridgestone tracks. Both track patterns have their upside and downside.
I own a asv pt-80 essentially the same thing but the outgoing model. It's got 3000+ hours I work in dirt gravel sand rocks I have not replaced any tracks or anything on this machine, great design. I do like the way asv opened up the drive sprocket for easier cleaning. I've demoed all makes and I think asv is still the king.I will not hesitate to buy another one.
A telehandler is a great machine to move snow with. You can pile it much higher.
Until you hit a curb going 10 mph. I seen $30,000 worth of boom damage on a CAT telehandler.
Last year I plowed my parking spot with the tele on my site with just the forks on. Worked great!
I plow walks with an asv RT-30, the little brother of this machine haha. Honesty never felt this safe and stable in another machine. I have to jump on and off curbs all the time and that clearance really helps. This machine is so well balanced.
Definitely better design then the bobcat setup. Even 70 years ago they put rubber rollers on the idlers. Everything about this setup is improved.
I want an ASV for snow and land clearing with mulcher!
When I read the title, I expected to see track loaders and wheel loaders doing the same work with the same attachments. Unfortunately, this was just a ridiculously long ASV sales pitch.
Their product does look pretty good though.

I run a cat 247b3 which has the exact same track system as this machine and it is incredibly smooth compared to the other tracked skid I run, a Kubota svl75.
Wish the boss had a track skid steer. His has tires and I used it to clear 4 feet of hard packed snow. If I didn't watch it she got stuck. Got stuck 4 times. 3 times in used the bucket to get unstuck. The 1 time had to use my old ramps I made to load my Craftsman tractor in my pickup. Lifted the skid steer up put the 2x6s under the tires and got it unstuck. Looks like the track is a lot better. Oh my Toro walk behind just wouldn't touch the deep snow. Got the 4 feet all at once in my driveway. Of course it was drifted snow 4 feet of it all the way down my driveway. Took me a while to get my driveway cleared but I got it. I am not new to using equipment but I am no professional running it. I used skid steers, loaders and bulldozers. Haven't used a bulldozer in many years though. We got a loader at work with a roll off bucket to load the semis. I use that all the time. All together I say I got 5 years running equipment. As I said I am not no professional but I can get it done. Learn something new every time I run equipment. If you think you know everything about running equipment hang up the keys cause you will only get hurt or hurt someone else.
Made me chuckle when you brought up MTL and CTL. CTL is an industry term for a tracked loaded and a Cat MTL has ASV patent tracks on it. But they sell so few of them the only model they have left is the 257D3
I gave up on tracks. I had an ASV just like the one in this video. Tracks worked really well until everything froze and you had to run off cambers. I don't know how many close calls I had with sliding uncontrollably sideways down a hill on rubber tracks. OOT metal tracks weren't any better. I even welded tabs on the metal...helped some but very uncomfortable ride. I sold the machine and bought a bobcat with tires. I run cross vbar chains in the winter, and metal OTT tracks for the rest of the year...That is the way to go. If you only have to move snow in level conditions, tracks will work fine. If any off cambers are involved, your going to get in trouble sooner or later. Its only a matter of time.

Ok im sold im going to buy a set of those tracks to hang on the wall for art. You have got me sold. Do they start the machine up in the morning for you to? Hell that one made me chuckle. It is a well designed machine . I mean that. Lot of good features. Im pretty sure that my wheeled Bobcat will push that thing backwards through the 35" of snow. I got a grand says im right or we could go for pinks. That what we used to do on the race track.

I have an RC 60 it's an awesome machine goes anywhere and is an absolute snow dozer probably the best machine in the woods and that's where it spends most of its life
My buddy has an rc60 and the little guy is a tank, runs a brush cutter well, struggles with the heavier loads in the grapple though just because it's a very heavy attachment for the machine
We had a 1/2-inch of snow yesterday...it was horrible. Now, I have to wait for the sun to melt it today.

Where I'm at (Minnesota) a half of an inch of show is a pissant quantity that would barely slow us down, and the sun won't melt it off until April.......

I had a older asv rc 50 always had problems from day one getting parts sucks. Bought a new svl 75-2 kubota in 2016 1000 hrs on it now problem free so far. asv tracks do last along time
After seeing this video I'm likening the ASV machines more and more also it looks like the artic snow pushers are working amazing and a simple design

Love this video Stan I've ran tak gehl cat bobcat and asv I'll take asv over any others.... Ground pressure is lower hard to get them stuck and weight vs HP is nice too....I did a job for a VP from cat and he wanted me to use a cat skid on job so he got brand new one brought it out used it for a couple hours and brought out the asv and parked the cat

Hi Stanley it was nice to meet you today.
Ok. So this is for anyone that has a real interest in the negatives of tracks and wants a a comparison of those and these in a mulcher and snow application. I am in Maine. We have rocks, ledge, sandy soils, clay soils and SNOW. I have run a Bobcat T770 for 3 years in every kind of terrain and condition you can imagine.
Hates.
Clay and debris will freeze up behind my sprockets and behind my front idlers. ASV looks to be a superior design to handle this challenge. My standard bobcat tracks will be fully encased in frozen debris at the end of a -10 degree day if the ice over puddles hasn’t frozen enough to stop me from falling though. Also as a mulcher, I get 1-2” diameter branches that will push themselves behind the drive guards into the belly pan on occasion. Had one catch on fire once! There is no room for hands so trying to pry them out is impossible. Open design has the upper hand. My only concern is throwing tracks. Not sure how that flex and stretch will factor into tracks staying where they should be while debris lands where it may. Also service. Downtime costs money. My machine goes down, who’s gonna fix it? There are a lot more cat and bobcat service sites than ASV. I just checked my area and the only 2 within 2 hours drive of me are 2 “ag tractor” dealers. Not sure if I trust them to get me up and running before I fall behind in my payments. Still. This has me thinking about making a switch. My bobcat tracks are completely not functional past November at best.

L70 sized machine with a Multiplog is all you'd ever need for clearing snow.

Tracks are fine on a parking lot. For a 20% grade covered with ice I'll take rubber tires with a good set of chains.
Literally today. John Deere 323e. Plowing one of the city bike paths because our tractors couldn't get through some of the drifts. Had to go up a hill with cliff on one side. Got to the top, stopped driving so I could carefully back down. Once I stopped it started sliding. Thankfully didn't go over, but yea, needed a change of underwear for sure.

@@mjpopp I tried to buy a 75HD from a new dealer and got the runaround like it was a used car dealership so I bought a forklift instead. After negotiating, I went and test drove them with money in my pocket. While in the showroom, he tries to sell it out from under me and that guy backs out, so I walk. Then he says he's dropping the price for being a schmuck and sends me an invoice for a grand more than our prior deal. Clown shoes ruin a dealership quickly. No ASV for me, sadly. I believe what you’re running on matters about as much as far as tracks. I’ve only ran CAT skid steers, but for textured concrete parking structures, the lug/block pattern tracks work excellent, and work terribly on asphalt. CAT’s MTL tracks that resemble the tracks on this ASV are better on asphalt than the concrete I mentioned. Wheels act the same on both from what I’ve experienced, the regular skid steer wheels.
There's a company up here in Brainerd that plows our apartment parking lot and they use some mini dozer/excavator brand, I can't think of the name but it has an independent boom swing. The colors are Black and Orange, it's like a ride behind excavator but it has a carriage on it. Thought you might be interested in it.

You need to consider income vs expense, not just expense when comparing tracks. This ASV Posi-Track system makes you more money than say Takeuchi tracks. Considerably more. These tracks pay for themselves. Expect that. I build gravel roads with these ASV tracks, in addition to dirt work and mulching. Their 2,000 hour statement is accurate. That's what I'm getting. Better than any other CTL, not worse. There's lots of guys talking out their rumps here. They've never ran these tracks and are parroting rumors, not experience.
And ASV's 15" of clearence is almost by itself the most important stat in deep steep forest. That one design feature has by itself practically paid for this entire $100,000 RT-120 by allowing the machine to work where others can't. When you combine the balance, track design, and clearance with the 120 HP, you get productivity no other CTL can come close to. You won't be able to climb, decend, or go through mud with any other machine where this ASV will go. And your tracks will not come off. I've never had a dropped track. That's money in the bank. Your tracks are long long paid for with this machine before they wear out. I bill between $1,500 & $2,000/day for this skid steer's productivity. You do the math.

I have seen guys buy these machines here in Australia and proceed to wear out tracks and rollers in our Dry hard dirt environment in no time compared to a tyre machine ! It doesnt snow here and we dont have swamps . Its an expensive machine to own when its not needed most of the time !

Bought one of those single stage pros. Almost 10 hrs on it...little auger cable wheel froze wearing into the cable covering. On/off switch wouldnt work for a couple days so had to choke it out and recoil froze at 22 below minutes after the toro hd got to cold to run past idle. Lol. Works well though.

i will say that the asv undercarriage works great ran them on the cat comparable 257 and 277 skid steers but i can tell you there are way too many moving parts on that asv undercarriage and they are not nearly as durable in heavy earthwork especially while working in gravel or crushed stone those asv tracks will be whooped in no time

I would agree. I own a 257b3 (same track style as this) granular A and granular B will tear them to shreds. 400-500 hrs max on them

jspaz 500 completely agree, we own a 257b and it has held up great but the track design gets whooped in concrete chunks or small gravel. Eventually your front and rear idlers wear out and your left with a mess and downtime
That it interesting. My dealer rep told me their test track is a giant sand box. Literally sand. They've run the steel inbed tracks and wore out gears and such much quicker than the ASV undercarriage design. That being said, the undercarriage that was on the 257 was not designed to fit the 257. Cat, in their infinite wisdom, put it on a much to heavy machine. Things wore out way to quickly due to the extra weight they were not designed for.
So coincidentally your video popped up day after my first deep snow experience( talking 4 feet) for my cat 277c which I believe has the same setup the ASV machine has, looks almost identicle.tracks are new and bogies are rubber small and metal big big money for the bogies from cat wish I hadn't done them after watching this. My issue is the snow would melt around the cogs but only on the middle rollers then freeze up only in the middle..tracks haven't been tensioned since they were put on. Also the front clean outs don't work 100 percent more like 15 percent so ice can build up there. I don't know if I'm looking for answers or if I answered it myself😂 anyways great vid man you run good w no sleep

My 277 cat has same bottom. He is wrong about the snow build up on that single rain. It gets so packed the machine wont move next morning if u shut it down during a snow removal/push back process. The 4 rear big wheels actually get so full of ice if operator keeps running it it bends and rips off the scrapers in rear idlers. Also it wont move in morning if u dont clean them out before leaving machine. Just my experience. We replaced the 4 rear idlers with steel ones cause 3/4 & 1 1/4 stone just destroys those rear wheels when turning. A bad operator that doesn't do 3pt turns can tear up all those wheels in a day on stone
My thoughts exactly! We run a 297C Cat with that undercarriage and the big bogies will load up with snow, warm up and melt into ice and the next thing you know they're full of solid ice, sometimes even bulging out far enough to make the machine surge. Crushed stone will tear up the bogies as well as getting lodged down beside them. I've replaced MANY of them over the years, they don't self clean.

I have a Cat 257D that has the ASV undercarriage and it works excellent in the snow. The best undercarriage for a landscaper also because it can go on turf and not tear it up. (Within reason)
Usually you can figure out a way to plan you trajectory and drive in/Back Out on sensitive turf areas that you don't want to tear up. Any turns on Turf (Even very gentle) can brutalize the turf. And if it's muddy, wait a couple days! Easy to dig a hole in Mud.

Recently saw a side by side comparison between A.S.V., CAT, Kubota, Case, Bobcat & Deere. While the Deere had the superior lifting capacity over most of the brands, the A.S.V. lead in most of the other categories. Now running a J.C.B. skid steer with the extendable boom and a A.S.V. Compact Track. Wish I could get the mono-boom and side door in an A.S.V. My ASV is outperforming EVER other brand of CTL I've every operated or owned. Still feel my J.C.B. is the best skid steer out there. Love the reach and ease of access.
they did not test takeuchi in the bunch the reason is they make the best track loader out asvs bottom does not hold up in heavy excavation use . snow they may be great but in an excavatin dirt use the bottom does not last.
@@andrewslagle1974 . They wanted to compare a Taka but there isn't a dealer within 350 kilometers of our area. Never seen one around these parts.
The reason Deere has the highest lift is because of how close to the cab the coupler is. So it can lift more without tipping but you lose some reach. Cat skid steers (as an extreme example) has the coupler probably 8inches further out from the cab. And lifts nearly the same. I'd rather reach over lift any day.
I've been very interested in an actual owner of a JCB Teleskid. I've been really considering one of those for many reasons, this ASV track design is very compelling. But I really love the idea of a telescoping boom, even though the track design of the CTL is now very archaic now that I've seen the difference here. Does the extendable boom trump the track design of the ASV in your opinion? How about power on the JCB? Is it useable with only 74hp?
@@shadofax96 . My JCB skid steer has the teleskid boom. The extendable boom is an incredible time saving option. I can remove pallets from both sides of a 53' trailer from one side and load a dump truck from one side. The boom reaches 13' in the air. When I'm working on a waterfront project, the boom works right along the water's edge without getting the wheels in the water or more importantly, the mud. I love it. I haven't yet had an issue where I couldn't lift a required load. I love the ASV TRACK but the teleskid trumps the track. I also use "Tweels" instead of the standard rubber tires. No flats, last longer. Wish I could get the ASV track on a Teleskid.
Slick conditions and grades I would be way less stressed about going for a ride with tires and chains.
Wish we could have saw a side by side comparison of both types of tracks in action

Those asv skid steer are pretty nice. You know cat gonna to come out with same tracks for their skid steer too. Asv put lot's of time in to that Rt-75 skid steer.
That SUV has the exact same undercarriage as a 277c, 287c, 297c

That a hell of a system. That track drive lug my 1970 scorpion. The drive sprocket worked almost the same way. The undercarriage looks like it from a snowmobile.

That is a very good observation. Considering ASV was founded by Edger Hetteen and Gary Lemke, there was definitely some snocat influence. Edger, of course, started both Arctic Cat and the Evil Empire (that other company out of Roseau). Gary was a huge Arctic Cat dealer back in the day.

Everything has trade offs. That smooth ride on the ASV track equates to more frequent track component replacement and at very high cost relative to other steel bogie and steel teeth drive sprocket design. In the winter it may be better than the other track designs but it also does not handle mud as well as the other styles of track. It is just a choice, I choose undercarriage design by wear costs and track design based upon the type I do with mine most, snow removal is a very small percentage of its total work. You just need to be honest with everyone, the ASV design is not all a win/win.
That heated n cooled enclosed cab seems very very badass to me. Just what a brilliant piece of machinery...how do people like asv skidsteers btw??

if you are saying that a broader track will give you more traction on compacted snow and ice, that couldn't be further from the truth. maybe i misunderstood though. we all know on snow and ice you want MORE pressure on a smaller contact patch. that's why we don't want 12" wide tires on our plow trucks, tall and skinny wins the day. but again, i might have misunderstood something. i believe a broader track will have more traction on dirt. same way when there is a lot of traction to be had, drag tires are very wide.
So can you please do some kinda comparison between the asv and the comparable cat multi terrain loader (257D,277D,287D, 299D?? Their design is based off of asv and at one point even had asv stamped on the carriages. I ask because I put about 450 hours on a 277D cat doing fence work on a national wildlife preserve and loved it. Looking at buying one until I started seeing your asv videos and the price is a decent amount less and the machine seems to in your tests and videos beat bobcat.

I've owned both types and our asv undercarriage was the first to go in heavy excavation compared to the normal type of undercarriage. In snow it worked good but that was not worth having especially if when it was all said and done the undercarriage was over twice the cost of a conventional.
i have seen the same the asv bottom does not hold up under hd dirt use.and the bottoms are big money.
Waste of time in Australia ! We don’t have snow . It makes me laugh when blokes tell me “ when are you getting a posi track “ . I say never mate , the hard dry clay and rock in Australia 🇦🇺 destroys every track system. Tyres rule here .
Although, despite this, the Terex and ASV machines are quickly growing in popularity in Australia. In addition, there are now %30 wheeled machines and %70 tracked skid loaders being sold in AU..... mostly kubota svl75's.......tyres are now the poor man's investment.
When I see big piles of snow like that I just think big dozer with a huge blade and just push the whole pile back in a few swipes. Probably would wreck the concrete though. Wonder if a large rubber tracked farm tractor with a massive blade would do the trick without damaging things.
Ive heard of people ripping the lugs off from the inside of the tracks can Buck answer with any experience on that?

On the farm we have had a Bobcat and it was excellent no repairs except a new windshield and battery. I personally would not consider tracks as they are going to have way more issues than a tire skid. They seem cool but if you don’t like down time then I think tracks are a nightmare. Did ASV pay you for this video? Show me one 10 years old and let’s see its repair list.
@Michael Brown While you are correct that a tracked machine is more complex and could cost more, in mud or on surfaces you don’t want to tear up, such as grass, you can’t beat a tracked model. In demo work or if you’re constantly on hard surfaces, then I’d take a wheeled unit.
I have a 1997 ASV MD70 that I have had for 19 years and for what I do a tire machine would never work
Id rather have a name brand skid steer you can get parts pretty much anywhere. Not bashing it, but I've never seen a asv dealership anywhere in my area.
I gotta say that ASV would be way easier to clean mud out during winters here in Iowa.

Tacks tracks trax!!! A lot depends on the operator, but out of all the machines I’ve run , I will only buy trax, I own 2 Cats , the old boy ASV track system is smoother than the newer ASV track system , an that’s about my only complaint.
I have a Gehl CTL 80. Made by techeuchi, sucks on compacted snow but unbeatable on dirt.

I have a bobcat t-200 with c lug pattern. The first time I plowed my driveway I was greatly disappointed. Totally sucked and would barely move

Got camso winter tracks for our JD323e. Had to use it a few times. I got stuck on nearly flat ground today. Had a small pile behind me and a slight slope in front. Could turn a little but would not go forward or back, had to do a quick dig to get myself out. Hate that thing on ice
