I think Toad Town from Partners in Time may be my favorite area in any Mario RPG ever. There's just something about wandering through a destroyed town that was seen as so bright and happy in every game it appeared in before and after. The music screams that it's a desolate wasteland devoid of almost all life. The few remaining inhabitants are terrified of the Shroobs that have taken over. Everything is covered in the ominous Shroob-purple mushrooms. The enemies are robotic Shroob soldiers, skeletons, and evil angelic balls. It all combines to create an atmosphere that is despair-ridden without ever losing the charm of a Mario game. Overall, that's why I feel Partners in Time deserves more than it got. It was a dark and disturbing game that never stopped feeling like a light-hearted mario game at its core, and that's something that no other Mario game (besides possibly Super Paper Mario) has accomplished.
Honestly, Toad Town is one of my favorite areas in PIT. Considering all the cheery incarnations in the other entries, seeing it deserted and gone is very depressing. Seeing those old toads asking Mario and co. to buy as much as they can to calm their loneliness is also very shocking, they barely escaped the shroobs and the fact that only those toads survived hurts. The music. Do I need to say anymore? The enemies in this area are also really fun. I don't know if Chugga runs into them here, but the robot shroobs and heart enemies are some of my favorite enemies in the game. Needless to say, this area is fun for me :>
And you guys thought Holli Jolli village was bad. Toad Town is where you learn that the shroobs don't mess around. It shows their simple desire to destroy and destroy all life and that is what is so depressing about this area. This is where the game perhaps takes its darkest turn and one of the darkest turns in the series.
Personally, I'm a bit disappointed that he didn't acknowledge the fantastic music in Toad Town. It's one of my personal favorite songs in the whole game.
Sorry, guess this is one song we don't agree on. I don't dislike it or anything, but it hasn't personally been among my first picks to listen to. Plenty more soundtrack gushing happens before the end, though!
This zone, the Yoob, and the underground are part of why this game always remained in my mind as a pretty mean game. Three times the game throws you into a new area without anyway to return to the hub, so if you are even slightly under-leveled, you will have a hard time learning the new enemies and their attack patterns without dying a few times.
tankman45210 this is very true and it certainly gave me trouble on my first playthrough, but if you have alot of times by getting to toad town, the gear keeps your stats up even if your under leveled so it doesn't turn out too bad.
Wait a minute, if Princess Shroob already took over the mushroom kingdom of the past, then the mushroom kingdom of the future would also be taken over, so what's the point of taking over the future mushroom kingdom if it's already taken over??????
Could be, that since the Time Holes exist, Past & Present are coexisting on their own. By that logic, when the link between the two eras is severed, then everything that happened in the past will become history in the present. But hey, what do I know?
People keep saying that this game is really short, but even if there are only ~10 episodes left, it'll still be longer than Superstar Saga. Superstar Saga Total LP time : 822 minutes Partners in Time Total LP time (so far) : 615 minutes
Meme Injector People whining about it being short just want something to gripe about In this game. List of short games people have no problem with 1.)Sonic games 2.) Portal 3.) Kid Icarus Uprising 4.) Kirby games 5.) 2D Mario games 6.) Star Fox 64 7.) Shovel Knight
You thought Luigi was the most beaten down character in this game? Try these elderly Toad Grandmothers who just happen to be the only known surviving Toads. I'd shop at their place all the time if I got to know more about them. Unlike the Hag sisters in Super Paper Mario, these ladies should have had more development. Is one of them Peach or Toadsworth's missing mom? Partners in Time has so many cool NPCs that I wish would return.
Dude you forgot the blue pepper AGAIN!?When in all mighty bowser's underpants, 'Can't believe i just said that' are you GOING TO TELL about the blue pepper!?
Wait what a bone pokey? I thought pokeys were plant like enemies... Also those poor Toads...Never saw it coming and I feel bad for those Grannie Toads. They probably had family, and they are the only ones left. Makes you sad if you think about.
Pokeys are kind of weird enemies. Sometimes they're considered plant zombies, sometimes they're considered animals, sometimes they're considered a mix, half plant half animal.
EDIT: "Hypothesis Transistor" is what Stuffwell is saying I always wondered how to get past that damn flag attack. never realized you were supposed to jump when he raised his flag.
*Fun fact:* It _is_ possible to counterattack the flags the Shroid throws at you if you fail it's challenge, however it doesn't deal damage back, and the timing is so tight that the only way you could possibly do it (without using cheats in an emulator) is by jumping aimlessly and doing it by accident.
I was going to say this the first time we say the level up but I forgot what I was going to type. I was going to say that I thought SPEED increased your ability to dodge attacks faster.
Safety badge, good for when you have a stockpile of items and aren't good at action commands? Also good for when you have a boss that you want to show the moves of without completely annihilating it.
Never really thought about it, but the Paper Mario series does have some good hub towns. Toad Town, Rogueport, Flipside/Flopside, Port Prisma, and even Decalberg are all fun to explore in their own right.
One of the darkest parts of a mario game to exist. Even if I hate toad town as a level, as a concept, toad town of partners in time does a great job showing how ruthless the shroobs are. Going from the happy land of paper mario to. . . this just really hits it home.
Are you kidding me Chugga? Skelokey is just like Shroid. One is Shroob + Droid, the other is skeleton + Pokey. They're even combined in a similar way, taking the parts of the words that sound similar and mashing them together. How dare you call Skelokey bad when it's on the exact same level as Shroid.
Ok Emile, I live in Massachusetts, and I have Partners in Time. During one of my playthroughs, I did not gain access to the basement using the gear. I waited until after the Star Sanctuary, and the pipe was already there
In this case, the word Stuffwel was looking for was "Hypothesis" which is an educated guess based on little knowledge. Using Autocorrect logic, the end which is just "sis" somehow got elongated to sister.
This was one of my favorite areas in the game it the complete opposite of what normal Mario is instead of sunny and happy dark and griddy and I appreciate the community you kind of revived with this playthrough
Just as the Toads succumbed to the Shroobs, so too was the Mushroom Kingdom succumbing to the Purple Fungi. This is getting more and more like War of the Worlds with every encounter we make with the Shroobs.
I have Paper Mario downloaded on my Wii U as a N64 virtual console game but I still haven't played it yet; I still haven't played it to this day. The only person who I have seen a let's play of is MasaeAnela. Sooner than later, I'm going to play that and Super Mario 64.
Kinda like "Jokes end" in concept, how you split up the team, each doing things to let the other progress, but for an area, instead of a tiny screen, I found it really cool when playing this game
I was a huge Paper Mario fan when I was a kid. When it was coming out, I was addicted to it. I just replayed it recently to relive the good times. Oh, my goodness, it is undoubtedly one of my favorite video games like ever!!!!
Not a fan of the overly-enthusiastic commentary, but I do appreciate the screen changes you make when showing off certain enemy attacks, and especially the portion of space you add between the screen when you do. Not a lot of Mario & Luigi DS videos bother with keeping screen continuity when editing, so I wanna let you know that your attention to detail and mindfulness of your audience's experience hasn't gone unnoticed and is appreciated.
MarioIsAwesome8 No, but apparently 10 is equivalent to infinaty. It's nowhere near as infinite as infinity. Buzz Lightyear doesn't aim for something so low.
Super Gengar Gamer I mean even then that's not even a hard challenge. As a singer, I could tell you that at 10x your normal talking speed, you could just keep saying "Shroo Shroo Shroo Shroo Shroo..." and not fail because you're speaking so fast that no one is going to pick up the "b" or the "m" since there's naturally going to be more emphasis on "sh", which is a far more plosive sound than the other two.
Considering how evolution works, you'd assume that every toad in the present would be the very definition of extreme. After all, the only known toad survivors of the shroob attack were the gramma toads and the extreme toads over at Thwomp Volcano.
i felt like the toad town area was the saddest and lonliest place in the game. sad music. ruined town. And not even the shroobs are around, they just let their robots run around
Eating dinner while watching Chuggaaconroy? Yes please!
Nothing beats a meal with a side of Emile!
Chef Jeff shut up xD
You mean an E-meal
GD_GamingWalrus Seriously though, the fact that he uploads at 5 pm makes dinner so much more enjoyable!
Pokémon Trainer Connor ポケモントレーナーコナー
Damn I actually wish I had written that instead :(
Chef Jeff 4pm where I live

I feel like Toad Town was still made of paper when the Shroobs invaded it, because they really *teared* the place apart.
Perfect
Teared isn't the right word
you mean tore

Maniac of Doom Oh yeah, my bad. Thanks man!☺

Something Pretentious, Probably Yeah same, I was humming the music while he was talking, and I was disappointed that he didn't acknowledge it.
Sorry, guess this is one song we don't agree on. I don't dislike it or anything, but it hasn't personally been among my first picks to listen to. Plenty more soundtrack gushing happens before the end, though!
chuggaaconroy Fair enough

I like that Toad Town, as a level in this game, more or less just exists to remind us of how terrible the Shroobs are.
Wait a minute, if Princess Shroob already took over the mushroom kingdom of the past, then the mushroom kingdom of the future would also be taken over, so what's the point of taking over the future mushroom kingdom if it's already taken over??????
Bomber Bros yes but it's pretty obvious that you beat her in the past so in the future the kingdom isn't taken over anymore.
Bomber Bros Meh, time travel, whattayagonnado?
Bomber Bros But you beat her in the past so......
IT'S PINKIE PIE DON'T QUESTION IT! I mean IT'S TIME TRAVEL THE DOCTOR AIN'T GOTTA EXPLAIN SHIT
Could be, that since the Time Holes exist, Past & Present are coexisting on their own. By that logic, when the link between the two eras is severed, then everything that happened in the past will become history in the present.
But hey, what do I know?
The music here fits the mood of a destroyed town pretty well
For those playing along, don't forget to grab the Dynamic Badge A that's a bit later on in Toad Town, It's in a house on the adult side.
It would be faster if you waited to get it until after you get to the blue pipe, but do you boo.
0:52 they worked as a duo just as we do-*o*
3:50 "Using your Lucky Eggs every battle"
Sounds like Chugga has Pokemon GO on the brain.
Not really, I don't think.
13:51 "I guess this makes you... DOUBLE DEAD!"
"fighting as a duo, much as we do!"
...no "o"? Emile, what a missed pun opportunity.
People keep saying that this game is really short, but even if there are only ~10 episodes left, it'll still be longer than Superstar Saga.
Superstar Saga Total LP time : 822 minutes
Partners in Time Total LP time (so far) : 615 minutes
True
Meme Injector the Mario RPGs are all short, at least by RPG standards.
fair enough
Probably... Less than 10? maybe 8? Because this is literally the third to last area
11:46. Possible reference to Chugga's Splatoon playthrough.
2:25 is that a bean spot on the step
I like to imagine that every time Stuffwell opens his mouth, a short, slurping sound is played.
Naturally his first attack on the love bubble deals 69 damage
I'm TOADLY happy to see this area.
Dude you forgot the blue pepper AGAIN!?When in all mighty bowser's underpants, 'Can't believe i just said that' are you GOING TO TELL about the blue pepper!?
Wow, the toad town theme here is also such a good song! It's melancholic and kinda sad and also beautiful
Well, there are also Bone Piranha Plants in NSMB2.
EDIT: "Hypothesis Transistor" is what Stuffwell is saying
I always wondered how to get past that damn flag attack. never realized you were supposed to jump when he raised his flag.
I love the oppressive, defeated tone this area sets. It makes the player's fight feel more important.
Chugga! Hypothesister is a combimation of Hypothesis and transistor.
Since this is a Paper Mario referenced episode, Skelloky's look like Cortez mated with a Poky
I was going to say this the first time we say the level up but I forgot what I was going to type. I was going to say that I thought SPEED increased your ability to dodge attacks faster.
"The more I get thrown about like luggage!" Stuffwell, you ARE luggage!
Safety badge, good for when you have a stockpile of items and aren't good at action commands? Also good for when you have a boss that you want to show the moves of without completely annihilating it.
It was the Dire Pow Badge you got.
To Chugga, if you like exploring toad town, wait till BiS (Bowser’s Inside Story)
I guess we can say that the Toads got turned into MUSH!
Get it? Mush? As in mushroom? And squashed? Ah, forget it.
MIXED FLOWER IS THE BEST AND MY FAVORITE ATTACK NEXT TO THE CANNONBALLER!!!
Speaking of Luigi's accomplishments in the past; remember that time he blew up the moon? Awesome.
Never really thought about it, but the Paper Mario series does have some good hub towns. Toad Town, Rogueport, Flipside/Flopside, Port Prisma, and even Decalberg are all fun to explore in their own right.
Super Luigi Galaxy episode 2:
"These guys here look like the Shroobs from Partners in time"
This was foreshadowed since 2010
One of the darkest parts of a mario game to exist. Even if I hate toad town as a level, as a concept, toad town of partners in time does a great job showing how ruthless the shroobs are. Going from the happy land of paper mario to. . . this just really hits it home.
The ad was Froot Loops and it had Toucan Sam jumping down at the end and this starts with Mario falling down and I'm like "WAS THIS PLANNED?? WHOA!!!"
It's time *Go to Town* on Toad Town.
AHHHHHHHHH
I just absolutely love the music of Toad Town
Are you kidding me Chugga? Skelokey is just like Shroid. One is Shroob + Droid, the other is skeleton + Pokey. They're even combined in a similar way, taking the parts of the words that sound similar and mashing them together. How dare you call Skelokey bad when it's on the exact same level as Shroid.
Chuggaaconroy: '(says "paper mario")'
Me:'(likes video)'
Jokes end memories coming back...
Skellokey? Really? Why not 'Dry Pokey' as 'Dry' feels like it's a staple of undead enemies in the Mario games.
How fitting that the ”Love Bubble” first took 69 damage 😏.
Who's ready for another episode of Partners in Time?!
I'm not ready help
I AM MAM
Gotta get some gud Emile for dinner.
Smack Jack
about time.
Trust me im not
My body is fucking ready
(14:07) Is that you, Chippy?
Ok Emile, I live in Massachusetts, and I have Partners in Time. During one of my playthroughs, I did not gain access to the basement using the gear. I waited until after the Star Sanctuary, and the pipe was already there
What I love about this stage is the music, its so gloomy and has this Halloween feel to it which I love a lot!
In this case, the word Stuffwel was looking for was "Hypothesis" which is an educated guess based on little knowledge. Using Autocorrect logic, the end which is just "sis" somehow got elongated to sister.
I just *love* baby Luigi's idle in attack. just waving his arms up and down amuses me.
I was shocked when Luigi stuck the landing at the beginning.
Apparently the Shroids fancy a game of Shy Guy Says.
This was one of my favorite areas in the game it the complete opposite of what normal Mario is instead of sunny and happy dark and griddy and I appreciate the community you kind of revived with this playthrough
14:16 erm... this WAS a love bubble
I always thought the giant shroom mushrooms look like Oreos. I
Mean the purple platforms
Just as the Toads succumbed to the Shroobs, so too was the Mushroom Kingdom succumbing to the Purple Fungi.
This is getting more and more like War of the Worlds with every encounter we make with the Shroobs.
I have Paper Mario downloaded on my Wii U as a N64 virtual console game but I still haven't played it yet; I still haven't played it to this day. The only person who I have seen a let's play of is MasaeAnela. Sooner than later, I'm going to play that and Super Mario 64.
Yes, finally something to watch! I had 2 hours of nothing to watch on RUclips. Then you, my hero, saved me from my suffering!
Man I feel the burn already
Man that UFO has taken chugga an extra
*E-MILE*
I HAVE NEVER SEEN THE SHROIDS DO THAT CRYSTAL THINGY ATTACK AND I USED TO ALWAYS PLAY THIS GAME
Stinkin' love this song. Fits the environment so well. Also plays a ton in a certain ongoing sprite series.
Hypotheses and transistor.
Gotta say, Mix Flower is my favorite of all the Bros. Items. Making and watching a giant ball of fire drop onto a enemy is amazing.
Toad town tumbles to the tyrannosaurs Rex to topple the tower of trouble
Amazing attempt at alliteration!
So, does anyone remember when chugga said he'd do together mode on Kid Icarus: Uprising?
Yep I remember.
Nintendo gallery... Wind Waker...?
Keegan Rodgers I still remember the trial gates of Okami too
Boi I got news for you.
@@slimsagey64 I got news for ya
Kinda like "Jokes end" in concept, how you split up the team, each doing things to let the other progress, but for an area, instead of a tiny screen, I found it really cool when playing this game
Star hill is my favourite area in this game
I was a huge Paper Mario fan when I was a kid. When it was coming out, I was addicted to it. I just replayed it recently to relive the good times. Oh, my goodness, it is undoubtedly one of my favorite video games like ever!!!!
Does Emile not know that Hypothesis is a real word?
The toadtown song sound like super smash bros brawls opening theme song in the first bit of the song
When I first saw the love bubble, I thought it was a Kirby enemy cameo.
Emile missed a bean spot. Comment section, you know what you must do.
Yes, my job is clear now, my job is clear! *HEY CHUGGA, YOU MISSED A BEAN SPOT IN THAT TOAD HOUSE!*
On the off chance that it matters, you forgot to replace the thrilling pants on baby Mario
(9:33) Considering Toad Town appears in Bowser's Inside Story, they most certainly have not forgotten it.
14:12 69 damage dealt to the Love Bubble xD
6:20 - so basically if all Mario Parties were an enemy. Got it. I would shred them to pieces then.
Hypothesister probably means "a system that makes hypothesis"... I don't think it's that hard to understand stuffwell's language lol
"Mario's biceps are practically exploding on us!"
Hmm do I smell a xenoblade reference?
Yes, yes I do
Any ever wonder why the shop equipment in the past is so much better than the present?
Shroob shrooms shroob shrooms.
You can't say that 10x fast infinatly without making a mistake.
I don't think ten is infinite.
MarioIsAwesome8 No, but apparently 10 is equivalent to infinaty. It's nowhere near as infinite as infinity. Buzz Lightyear doesn't aim for something so low.
I can see why You would fail, if You did it infinitely. You would die.
10x your normal talking speed.
"the bros ball gets the shaft"
Mind: *rolls into gutter*
But love bubbles are flying pink things, you should think theyre amazing
Considering how evolution works, you'd assume that every toad in the present would be the very definition of extreme. After all, the only known toad survivors of the shroob attack were the gramma toads and the extreme toads over at Thwomp Volcano.
Alliteration
Two Trouble Kings - Toad Town Tumbles
i felt like the toad town area was the saddest and lonliest place in the game. sad music. ruined town. And not even the shroobs are around, they just let their robots run around
The hilarity of all that is Emile never ceases to amaze me!
Transitioning into another world without re-entering a time-hole. That's new.
I cannot help but scream "2 for the price of 1 grandma" at the screen when I see this store. Is there something wrong with me?
Today my car got toad...
Still horrible
Mario and Luigi Partners in Time: You can't save the past but you sure as hell can save your story progress.
