  • My 1998 Ford F150 with the 4.6L V8 has a clogged and cracked catalytic converter. Causing the engine to run horribly and have smoke come up from the drivers side.

    @bcoverss I had this setup installed at around 125,000 miles or so. It had replaced all the original exhaust piping. These were high flow cats that got clogged.

    @infinity3jif It was the flange from the manifold to the downpipe. New bolts and its all good.

    My truck was well maintained. Stuff just goes bad. Stock cats clogged up and cracked. I replaced them with aftermarket since it's nearly $800 for catalytic converter per side. These cats on here were fine. Exhaust fell apart at the bolts from rust. A lot of parts were going due to age causing multiple problems. All was fixed after this video and truck ran great except for poor mileage for its age, traded it in for 2011 f150.

    Fixed that problem with my truck just took off the cats.

    After replacing the cats, O2 sensors and other parts that crapped out the truck ran great.

    If it jumps up like that it could be a vacume leak. Look at the rubber hose coming from the PCV valve on the passenger side, pull back that insulation on it to check for holes.
    The computer is on the passenger side under the dash by the kick board.

    @TheCatHimself yea but was just pissed that it happened to the high flow cats that were only 3 years old not the original stock cats. All is good since then with other repairs. Truck is running very well, decent mileage for its age but its got that dam oil leak now.

    You will need to cut somewhere. The oem system is bolted to the manifolds and its all welded from there on if still oem.

    @reub3ngAs Doesn't matter now. I traded her in and picked up a 2011 F150 Supercab 4x4 with the 5.0.

    97 F-150 4.6 clogged cats, might chop out and go the other way, any pointers or set up recommendations?

      If you dont care about the emissions and if they still make the plug in harness to trick oxygen sensors to run normal then remove them, 2 1/4" all new pips to an h or x pipe then out the back.

    I have a 1988 ford F150, I start it in the morning and when I shut it off it cranks up to 2500 rpm's. I am trying to figure out where the computer is on this old fart.

    does it rattle sometimes?

    • @2005GLI
      @2005GLI  3 года назад

      Turned out to not be the cats but the exhaust flange connection separated. So yea, it rattled.
      But bad cats can rattle too if the internal filter portion cracks and breaks apart.

    I have a 1997 ford f250 light duty, the 7 lug.. I tore the upper intake off and did new plugs and new intake gaskets hoping that was the problem but I started it up and it ran the same as it did before. I am almost sure it's got a clogged cat now. Did you replace them or just put a pipe in their place?

    FORD _ Fucking Old Rebuilt Dodge! I have the same truck. It just turned 100K. Motor has problem that even has the mechanics scratchin theri nuts. When under load, she farts and pops. Under highway cdx, purrs. I have replaced the spark pack, egr valve and the pcv valve. Computer sez misfire on cyl 4. New plug, wires and the spark pack. Last but least, I am going to replace the right side o2 sensors. Yes, there are 4 on this hulk. If that don't work, I am going to drive to the scrap yard
