There are some pretty good Irish rock bands that use violins. Some of the Metallica songs on the S&M album are good - they recorded it with the San Francisco symphony Orchestra
its not better than HIM cover, his voice lacks something for this song in particular, dont get me wrong, i like the band and ive been listening to it for a long time but this one is not good at all

Chris Isaak is the original artist, he released it in 1989. There are several versions, but none as soul satisfying / hauntingly great as the original.

Even the original gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. It's something about the combination of the melody and lyrics. It doesn't seem to matter who is singing it or if little changes are made, it's so powerful.
