Sarah, thank you for your video. I watched few of your videos before New York trips it’s very helpful and easy. My daughter and I have great time there.
I don't want to be the one to point out you're confusing people. You told people to pick Grand Central as their ticket option via LIRR from Jamaica, but then took a train to Penn Station. Would be helpful if you explained that there are TWO LIRR terminals in Manhattan, either of which may be better depending on where their hotel is. You can also use the LIRR from LGA/Woodside using the Q70 which is probably actually faster than the M60 you mentioned.
We just arrived today at 10:30am. It is UN meeting week so traffic is extra bad. Uber/Lyft/taxi $100 plus tips, Curb $80 all taking 1:15. We took airtrain to LIRR to subway in same time for a total of $32 for 2 people and no tipping. Sounds like it’s crazy but wasn’t bad and better than being stuck in a car.
Did the same (there was glitch in the Airtrain system so it wound up being free this afternoon) and I was in Midtown via LIRR in 18 minutes FLAT- no UN traffic snarl ups!
I was staying in the heart of midtown right next to Penn, and I found it so much easier to get the LIRR to Woodside (only one stop) then the free Q70. $5, one stop, more comfortable ride and luggage space, worth it for me. Love you Sarah!!!
I love the fact that you use two outfits for the journey. I'd also like just one time someone on these cheap guides to do the journey like many of us with 50 pound suitcase, back pack and wheelie in the winter with rain. Now that is a video I'd pay to watch.
How come when flying into JFK you recommend taking the AirTrain to the Long Island Railroad train and going into Penn Station but when flying into EWR you don't recommend taking the AirTrain to the NJ Transit train and coming into Penn Station from the other direction. Wouldn't the bus be prone to delays from traffic?
The Coach Newark Express from Newark to Mid-town is the best. Especially if you book a hotel near by the 3 stops it makes. jump on and relax and walk a couple blocks to your hotel and the same going back to the Airport. Pay the extra bucks for the convenience.
FYI: Many airports use the Ride App type of locations. But it is still good that you point this out, because there are also many airports that don't use it.
When I first started visiting the city I was intimidated with the subway ect. So I started watching videos like yours , printed out maps ect. I decided to make my first subway ride simple from Penn Station to uptown with no transfers to help me gain confidence. After that it was easy ! Also, just use your phone to pay . If you are not sure, ask someone for help . The police as well as other New Yorkers are very friendly . Also a printed copy of the subway system trains are a good back up plan that give one some insurance . So just do you homework and resist using the taxis and Uber - they are expensive and take much more time as you are moving through the streets slowly - at least 5 times slower ! Trains are less than $3.00. I paid $30.00 to go from midtown to downtown and the time it took was 35 minutes vs 10 minutes !
The cheapest way to reach Manhattan is: go with airtrain (free ride) to Howard Beach without exiting . Buy at the vendor a weekly metrocard or a single ride metro card (it depends how long you stay in NY), then come back (for free) to Leffert Blvd, go down and take the Bus Q10 LTD (just pay attention at Leffert BLVD, because there are 2 exit and one of that is for Q3 bus), till last stop Kew Gardens, it takes about 25 minutes. Take Subway E or F and will be in Manhattan in about 1 hour from JFK .

Remember though, only tip the base fare! Do NOT tip the taxes. They are already an extra charge, so tip the base fare only. As we'd only just got there and our driver was a nice man, I just gave him a 'Benjamin' 👍🏻😄
Definitely take the shuttle from Newark into the city. It also stops at Bryant Park and Grand Central which is a little less sketchy than Port Authority. Hi Sarah I’m going to come to NYC in 2 weeks, this video really useful..Although I do have a question. Is it possible to carry a large suitcase in buses or trains from Newark?
It depends on how large. Private busses (NJ Transit is public transport) like the airport shuttles will have luggage storage at the bottom, accessible from outside, so you won't be carrying that with you to your seat. The airport busses will stop at Port Authority Bus Terminal on 8th Ave, between 40th and 42nd. You can also take the Newark (EWR) Airtrain to Newark Airport Station on NJ Transit. There you can take an NJ Transit train into New York Penn Station (8th Ave, between 31st and 32nd street).
Went to NYC via JFK in December and had absolutely no problem getting to my Long Island City hotel thanks to this video (also booked in LIC thanks to your rec). On the way back to JFK from Midtown I took a Revel (with your discount code so thanks for saving me so much money twice!) and let me tell you: the views of Manhattan at night from the other side of the bridge were completely worth the cost, plus I was too tired to take the train with my luggage. I'm coming back in a couple of weeks via LGA now so I'm back for more tips :)
I still miss the Airporter bus that was about $13 and drop you off at Grand Central. Had power plugs and air conditioning. So convenient and nice ride.
Hi Sarah Well I miss the tokens. Lol I use the Metrocard. Trains the R46 subway car is my favorite when I was young. You were on the N train and the Subway car was R46.Yes I agree with you when it comes to the Subway " Etiquette " When it comes to the Airports ( If I have to fly. Not a fan of it) it would be JFK or LGA. Any way traveling in and out of NY can be pricey. I would still take a taxi 🚕.
@jasonpsapp17 Yes, up to and including 4 persons can use a single 10 ride pass at a time. It expires 30 days after you use it the first time. If you use the one card for 3 persons both ways, for a total use of 6, that works out to $4.17/person... half the normal cost of $8.25/person. There will still be 4 unused rides. I usually hand the card to an airport staff member or gate agent so they can use the remainder of rides.
If I'm going straight from the Airtrain on to the LIRR to Grand Central, why do I need to buy a metro card? I'm not planning on using the subway at all during my stay.
Technically, you can get to Manhattan from LGA. People forget that for $2.90+ Transfer, you can take the M60+SBS to Harlem via 125th St.; & then the subway to {insert Tourist Trap attractions here}. From JFK, Q3, 10, or B15 to Bed-Stuy, Ozone Pk., or Jamaica-165th. Most likely, you’ll transfer to the (A) to where you need to be instead of paying an arm & a leg on Airtrain. For Newark, take NJT to Newark-Penn or New York-Penn. for Newark, you can then take PATH to either Downtown, or Midtown. It’s probably still $2.75, but if not, then $2.90+ NJT Fare.
We just took the q70 from LaGuardia to Roosevelt for free and bought a metro card for 7 days unlimited. We did have a hard time finding the bus stop back to the airport and got on the wrong bus but the driver was super nice and actually drove us to the correct stop (no one else was on the bus lol). Other than that it was super easy getting around the city.
One tip for JFK: If the Train Time app is not working for you, just go to Jamaica Station and hop on the LIRR anyways. The conductor can sell you a ticket! They are really nice and understand that you are new in town! Weirdly, there was a hiccup in the Airtrain system so it wound up being free late in the afternoon today. Also: 1) The UN is in session and the President is there, so expect CRAZY traffic in midtown with a very heavy police presence if you are coming right now. 2) Havinga. car service is great if you are in a group or family!
Or use the special LIRR Ticket Vending Machines at Jamaica (They are Green) which will sell you a combo Metrocard and LIRR Ticket. The MetroCard can be reloaded for use later in your trip.
Unless you want to go to Long Island city or something ear is the better airport to fly to in this circumstance there’s an NJT train going directly to midtown
Sounds really good am going from jfk airport to the manhattan at times square hotel so which would you recommend to take i will be there for 4 days in January
Did you mention the metro express lines? Generelly a great thing, but can be frustrating for foreigners if by accident you start at an express stop but want to go somewhere before the next express stop. I saw freaked out tourists who stranded in Harlem...
after spending 3 hours in jfk waiting for the immigration check i wanted to take a taxi but you had to order one and i had enough so i took the airtrain to jamaica and it was free because they opened the gates so i paid 2.95 dollar instead of maybe over 100 to get to my hotel .
Two probably daft questions - if you're getting on the subway with a child, what age do they have to be to need to pay and how can you get them through the gates, assuming they don't have their own contactless card or metro card? Thanks!
I was recently in NYC, opted to pay Lyft, yes it was expensive, but we had it budgeted into our travel. We had some trouble getting to the AirTran because of some renovations, but a nice sir told us which way to go. All through the trip we used the subway and buses, the contactless option was a breeze to use.
What did you pay? Coming to NY in two years for a vacation....I want quick delivery, of myself, and my niece. I'm thinking of staying in Long Island City
@@Freedom_Fighter72I stayed in Times Square area and will never stay there again. Lol. The Lyft from JFK to the hotel was like $115-$130 each way. Like I mentioned we had already budgeted that into the trip total.
I reiterate what Sarah said in this video regarding Long Island Raid Road service into Manhattan from JFK as opposed to the subway (the E train). Avoid at all costs the E train into Manhattan. It is filled with homeless, assorted mentally ill, and on nights and especially weekends, is subject to not running or delays do to never ending track work. The Long Island Rail Road, LIRR, is well worth the few extra nominal dollars in order to not be subjected to the previously mentioned. As an added note, you have your choice whether to go into Penn Station or Grand Central Terminal, which is great for people staying more east in midtown around 42nd St and Park Ave. Take the Airtrain to Jamaica station, get off, walk about 200 feet to the LIRR tracks and just buy a ticket at the machine. Escalators or elevators will take you right down to your track.
There are dedicated LIRR TVMs before the AirTrain exit faregates which will sell you a combo AirTrain fare and LIRR ticket (on a MetroCard). The line is usually shorter at these TVMs since everyone else is buying one at the NYC Subway TVMs. Just make sure the LIRR conductor returns the MetroCard to you so you can reload it and use it later in your trip.
For foreign tourists, I agree that in the evenings, it is not worth the trouble to save a few dollars to take unfamiliar long bus and subway routes carrying many large pieces of luggage and dealing with beggars, drunks, drug addicts and homeless people hanging out on the bus stops and subway trains.
Take the Q70 LaGuardia Link bus to subway Midtown via the Roosevelt/61st its free. Everyone with suitcases gets off. Then get on the subway for 2.90. Easy and cheap. Time Square or Canal st. or other stops. Did this my first time last week. Got around NY for $15 on the weekend.
Catching the Airtrain then the Long Island Rail Road is the easiest way to get from JFK to Midtown Manhattan (Penn Station). Watched a lot of youtube videos before I visited New York for first time. Is so easy, cheap and quick.
I came to the jfk airport, got it through the border control, asked a maintenance worker how to get out, he directed me and fertig aus! (Ready to go). Thats how u wont get ripped off. Just ask the personal. Americans are helpful people and always happy to assist u. The skyline train to jamaica station and from there ur on the subway system. From there easy to navigate
You are wrong. if your going into Manhattan you say I am going into the city and not Midtown unless you are going to Midtown which consists of 34th street to 59th street between 3rd Ave to 8th Ave

Hi Sarah, loving your content and currently binge watching, just a (maybe stupid) question please with a family of 3 with only 1 Apple Pay can I swipe it 3 times to let us all through or do I need 1 Apple Pay and 2 metro cards please?
You can use the same card or device for up to 4 people at once, however the fare cap will only apply to the first tap each time. Definitely not a stupid question!
Nyc is expensive, but it should be a regular MTA bus from JFK to subway with free transfer. The problem is that you will spend more than an hour and a half getting to Manhattan that way.
For people that visit from europe. The rates in the metro/subway does it come with extra charges because the cards used are not from USA? Thanks in advance
I doubt that Metro wants you to pay more. However, generally, some credit card companies have a fee when using the card outside of your home country. In Germany it's usually up to 2% of the paid amount. Hope that helps.
All prices for public transportation is for one person. Consider that if you have a family and luggage.

I'm coming back in a couple of weeks via LGA now so I'm back for more tips :)
laguardia airport video starts @6:57. Also Sarah and Chat, when we want to take a bus to newark airport, do we get on at port authority?
I still miss the Airporter bus that was about $13 and drop you off at Grand Central. Had power plugs and air conditioning. So convenient and nice ride.
Thank you Sarah for another great tips on the video. I will share it with friends and family.
You are so welcome! And thank you for sharing! Appreciate you watching :)
i can see u work hard for this video, thank you...!
Hi Sarah
Well I miss the tokens. Lol
I use the Metrocard.
4:01 If traveling to Brooklyn, connecting to the A at Howard Beach is probably preferable.
Or you can take the LIRR to Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal.
16:40 - You were on the sidewalk of 42 Street at PABT near Times Square .. but .. then the Subway talk is *elsewhere* in Manhattan! ..
4:50 if you use the kiosk for 10-ride pass, it's $25+$1 for the card. If the newsstand behind you is open, they sell the pass without the $1 card fee.
So can a group of 3 people utilize the 10-ride pass? Would multiple cards be needed or it's a shared card? Thank you!
I swear I’m loving your videos. So helpful I’m traveling solo to NY. 3rd time. Thank you for your videos. 🙏🏽😁
If I'm going straight from the Airtrain on to the LIRR to Grand Central, why do I need to buy a metro card? I'm not planning on using the subway at all during my stay.
Because it is the only way to pay for the Airtrain ride
As a New Yorker, what is the city center? Midtown?
For real! I was born and raised in NYC (Brooklyn) and this is the FIRST TIME I see someone call it “City Center” 😂

What are some budget friendly hotel’s in Times Square or near Times Square ?? Going in December so excited 1-4 ! 🎉
Please do Tel Aviv vs New York food etc what’s cheaper and expensive israel vs New York thanks for RUclips
Great vid btw.
You forgot about the yellow cab it is flat rate to city $70 from jfk.. the best option
Especially if you’re getting in late at night!
This is a fantastic idea for a video, well done! Great use of your platform. Super-helpful!
Very nice and informative video ❤.
I am coming to NYC, jfk with my 5 family members.
Which budget card you recommend for me .
2) Havinga. car service is great if you are in a group or family!
but the conductor sells you the ticket is expensive, if it was me i would buy a city ticket for 5 or 7 dollars on the lirr.
Or use the special LIRR Ticket Vending Machines at Jamaica (They are Green) which will sell you a combo Metrocard and LIRR Ticket. The MetroCard can be reloaded for use later in your trip.
12:44 - That is a weird looking map of EWK Airport ... A-terminal is moved over!
Unless you want to go to Long Island city or something ear is the better airport to fly to in this circumstance there’s an NJT train going directly to midtown
I like Dial 7 car service ... rates are good and the service is excellent
Sounds really good am going from jfk airport to the manhattan at times square hotel so which would you recommend to take i will be there for 4 days in January
We are staying in Lincoln harbor, can you get off and board the shuttle here?
THANK YOU for the moving sidewalk etiquette!
We’re done the LGA to midtown before for $3 each. Great deal
Excellent. Educative. Elucidated. Superb narration! Thanks!
Thanks for the useful information. What are your suggestions for late arrivals?
Wish I had seen this video before, getting to Newark was a nightmare through the subway and the path!
Thanks for this, i'm going to NYC early January and was researching transportation options
Take the Airtrain to Jamaica station, get off, walk
about 200 feet to the LIRR tracks and just buy a ticket at the machine.
Very useful tips & great 🙌🏻
Catching the Airtrain then the Long Island Rail Road is the easiest way to get from JFK to Midtown Manhattan (Penn Station). Watched a lot of youtube videos before I visited New York for first time. Is so easy, cheap and quick.
In surprised there’s still no vid on how to get to and from Long Island airport. I seen some great deals to fly into there
I came to the jfk airport, got it through the border control, asked a maintenance worker how to get out, he directed me and fertig aus! (Ready to go). Thats how u wont get ripped off. Just ask the personal. Americans are helpful people and always happy to assist u. The skyline train to jamaica station and from there ur on the subway system. From there easy to navigate
Great video. FYI to future visitors, no one from NYC calls it “city center”. It’s just called midtown if you are going to the middle of manhattan.
You are wrong. if your going into Manhattan you say I am going into the city and not Midtown unless you are going to Midtown which consists of 34th street to 59th street between 3rd Ave to 8th Ave
I am planning a trip to NYC in early February. Will the cold weather and the snow make it much more difficult to get into the city from JFK?
I went to ny in feb 2020, no snow and it was very easy to get to the city. We took an express bus from jfk to port authority which was around 19 dollars
@@AshleyWyona I dunno whether to be glad or sad. Being from the tropics, I am afraid of the cold, but am kinda looking forward to the snow ...
@@CSTam-vy7bp it didnt snow when we were there but the cold really is something diff. In from europe so im kinda used to cold but this level of cold was a lot. Im going again in march or april hopefully the weather will be nicer
thank you very much! Your explanations are easy and clear and make planning easier. I subscribed, and good luck with your channel.
It does matter which airport to go to and into the city by taxi. LGA about $55 on average. EWR about $90-$120 on average and JFk is a flat rate of $85
What’s the best route with the bus and subway to take from LGA to the Manhattan Financial District?
Why should I get the Metro card when I use the MTA app to get the ticket from Jamaica to Grand Central?
Very useful as usual!
I’m thinking of staying at the YMCA hostel and I’m also thinking of getting a 2 day city pass so if I get a shuttle to the city centre with the sightseeing pass will I then have to get the subway ?
Perhaps a noob question but where can i get mobile phone SIM cards? Are they available at the airport?
Yes.
can we pay by Omny pay for the Air Train at JFK?
does it make sense to buy a metro card just for the Air Train as I intend to use Omny for the subway rides during my time in the city?
So this video confused me quite a bit. Do people have to take the airtrain if they come off at Terminal 4 and just want to get an uber or lyft?
Great video! Two questions. First, is there a fee to ride the Air Train to the rideshare pick up spot? Or do you only pay if you’re going further? Second, can you use contactless payment for the buses?
You only pay for the AirTrain when you exit at the Jamaica station
You could ride it in a circle and never leave for free 😂
Nice to have updated info! The only issue with Revel (and other apps) is that they only work with US or certain countries numbers. Is there a trick for that? I'll have free roaming, so getting a prepaid sim will be my last option, but I do want to try Revel, Seated, etc. Thanks!
Please help flying into jfk tomorrow and taking the air train/subway to the Gotham hotel in midtown, what station do we need to depart and how much will it cost in total for 2 people? How far is the walk to the hotel thx in advance
Really informative. Thank you.
you're a lifesaver. thank you. cowfoot from florida
Do you have an adjustments for transfers to Long Island City or anywhere else you recommend for slightly cheaper accommodation?
Next time I’m using public transportation to Manhattan. Lyft was expensive and traffic was insane worst than home traffic 😅 Clear and understandable video ❤
@@wwemario12345 Thank you :)
Great advice for my next trip 👍🏻
Loved it 🥰
Nyc is expensive, but it should be a regular MTA bus from JFK to subway with free transfer. The problem is that you will spend more than an hour and a half getting to Manhattan that way.
I’m curious why a person 50 minute bus ride is better than taking njtransit. Every time I use Newark the train was super convenient for me
THANK YOU FOR THIS! I’ll be in NYC in 2 weeks and was trying to figure out how to get to our hotel! You are a lifesaver 🫶🏼🥹🥰
Does the amount shown in Lyft includes everything like taxes and tips or that is added to the amount shown at pick up time?
