I'll add that if you are going to a broadway show, do it a few days after you arrive if you are from a different time zone. My mother, father, sister and grandmother all fell asleep during the Lion King thanks to jet lag lol
Great video! Good tips! That said, regarding midtown... I've stayed in NYC four times so far and each time I've gone, no lie, I've stayed somewhere in the midtown-ish area. The furthest north was on West 51st and the furthest south was on West 35th. Apart from one now closed hotel on West 42nd and 10th, I've had a good experience on all these properties. I would love to explore elsewhere but I have not had any reason to yet. Of course, I have ventured outside of Midtown to do other things. One of the benefits of this is having most of the subway at your fingertips. When I come to NYC, there is usually some event going on in the midtown area like New York Comic Con at the Javits or a concert at the Madison Square Garden, and I usually come in on Amtrak at Penn Station, which makes these hotels fairly walkable from said point. That said, if anyone wants some recommendations, I stayed at the Michelangelo on West 51st, which is quite luxurious. I also stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn on West 35th/6th, where I had a nice Empire State view. Also, the Hilton Times Square may be around all the touristy stuff, but my room was very clean and spacious as far as lodging in this city goes. That, and the view from the 40th floor, where I stayed, is downright picturesque.
Great tips. I take the train and visit the city about every 3 weeks ! I found that after about 5 visits it's easy to navigate around. Do some research and have a plan. I arrive at 9: 00 AM and leave at about 5: 00 PM . That gives me plenty of time to see one major attraction with some more time to chill & eat. If I am staying overnight there is enough time to see more events. For me it's best to see one major attraction and enjoy it instead of cramming in two events. Yes- stay away from the typical tourist attractions . As mentioned before, have a good plan for you visit and don't get stressed about the negative reports about the city. With millions of people around there is bound to be a few problems. Just use some common sense ! I have never felt uncomfortable during my visits ! After 40 plus visits I still have many places & experience to see. The list is endless !
Hi Sarah, Thanks for your indispensable tips on NYC and what to look out for. I always get good advice and tips from your channel. Thank you so much. Best Wishes, Peter
Foreigners may actually be interested in going to chain restaurants since it's something they don't have at home especially if it's their first time in the U.S. Something to keep in mind
Once again Sarah a terrific effort filled with voluminous information. I have watched your videos for almost a couple of years now. I am actually starting to memorize many of your tips. The ones that come to mind immediately are The fake monks in Times Square, and your intense instruction NOT to eat at a chain restaurant. Maybe in another year or so, I will be so well tutored that yes, I might even visit. Being from Michigan, I am a big hockey fan. I have always dreamed of seeing my beloved Detroit Red Wings play The Rangers @ MSG. So that would be on my itinerary. The rest of it I should be able to put together as I continue to follow your tips. Once again, I wish you the best on the birth of your second child.
Yeah, the tipping aspect is why I almost certainly will not be eating at very many, if any at all, sit down restaurants. Especially when the 'Tip' is expected to be 20%. 10% to 15%, that's more like it, when in Rome I guess, but if they expect an extra 20%, nah, will take my business elsewhere to places with no waiting staff.
Thanks, another great video. We’re heading to NYC in December, are there cloak rooms to put coats in most places? Conscious will have big heavy coats everywhere. Also do most eating places cater for gluten free or should we seek out specialist places? Your map sounds great, will check that out .
As a native New Yorker for over 60 years I find it so ironic that scammers are still operating in Times Square just a few yards from the police station.
@@AlanNobleNE Don't You are NOT obligated. The guild tripping about 'rude to the server' is unnecessary. You'll probably never going there again, it's not your friend. If no one participates the ratrace, the workers will finally get to stand up.

I too decided to use the hotel lobby strategy when I suddenly needed to poop. I was in Brooklyn and saw that there was a big Marriott just a few minutes walk away. I walked in and was greeted by a big ass sign that said "NO PUBLIC RESTROOM". Fail lol. Thank you to a courthouse a few blocks away though that saved my ass.
Olive garden taste like at home spagetti and ragu sauce! Ugh! Go to eataly! Thats real italian food! La pizza la pasta! Trust me! Best pizza u ever have. And pasta! Near memorial place.
Not always true about the price of hotels in Midtown. It can depend. I just stayed cheaply in Westgate grand central. Though not in times square, it was on 42nd street near the UN building. It was very reasonable.
I’ve known a bunch of restaurant workers, they make loads of money off tips. No need to feel bad haha Although, the tips usually get split up between everyone so it’s not just for the person delivering you food so keep that in mind
It's all fine. Dont Listen to Trump and Fox News propaganda. Been there in March and it felt just as safe as european cities because there is police presents everywhere.

Nice Information in all Videos :D
One Question, where is the link for the restaurant map? ^^
Hey Sarah ! Thanks for your work and your beautiful videos. Btw where is the link for the map and restaurants ? 😊
When I used to go downtown on the weekends. The 3rd bathroom hack is the best hack ever, I did it all the time!!!
This is so cool, thank you so much!!! 🤩❤

I went to one restaurant in Manhattan where the tip was automatically set to 25%, with options to change to either 23 or 20 as the lowest option 😮
Thanks, another great video.

Hi I love your channel and am a big fan , I’m visiting in November, could you recommend places to eat on thanksgiving
All agreed apart from tipping! It's mad to think I'm paying for the food AND I need to pay for the servers salary... very odd America, sort it out.
A lot of NYC restaurants in touristy areas are now automatically including 18% tip on the bill 🤷🏻♀️

You are NOT obligated.
The guild tripping about 'rude to the server' is unnecessary.
You'll probably never going there again, it's not your friend.
If no one participates the ratrace, the workers will finally get to stand up.
You tip waitresses at a restaurant. Period. 20% if the service is good.
DO NOT TIP ANYWHERE ELSE! period.
@@drinny26 why though? Why are they working for free? We don’t tip waitresses in the UK because they get paid. Some even refuse tips. Why should I pay for their salary when the restaurant should?
Offensive is to charge 20% tips to customers

I always stay in midtown. I've never overpaid
My trip in Oct it's just 4 days long... Hence Midtown around Bryant park seemed to me the best option... But yeah it's expensive!
Now i know what i must do . Eat at Olive garden in Manhattan . Thank you .
Done that ... Been there ..
Not really recommended ..
Try Red Lobster instead :+

Where is the link for Sarah's favorite restaurants (map) ??
And when someone comes to clean your room? How much is the right tip?
Snuck a clip of Chicago in there at 7:40 huh? Lol
The neighborhoods in Nyc is a lot safer than before, but do not shop in midtown Manhattan if you're trying to save money
Nice
Be sure to try pilot sport cup 2 at the Michelin restaurant 😂😂😂
My tip is stay out of dark alleys at night 😂
im going in october im hoping to book one our your food tours
Be sure to check your bills as some will put a 20% gratuity on it .
When was this filmed?! I didn't see Anastasia listed on the currently playing Broadway shows but I see the posted up in the video.
Anastasia closed in Mar 2019 so it's probably stock footage or b-roll Sarah used
