I'm as old as FatJoe, so I remember how it was too. I remember the world before rap existed. Here's the thing--Melle Mel been bitter since Run DMC started getting love over rap's Parliament/Funkadelic copycat style rejects. Half these "pioneers" never even thought "rap" would last past 1985, which is why they stopped rapping and started dissing everybody who wasn't them. They are still mad because 40 years ago in 1984 "all these young kids" (Run DMC, Shan, BDP, Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Fresh Prince, Whodini, UTFO, Roxanne Shante, Heavy D, et al) were getting record deals and they weren't getting re-signed by any companies to do whatever simplistic shit they were doing in 1981--which was completely played out by 1986 when "new school" artists like Rakim, De La Soul, Chuck D, Luke, Too Short, and NWA replaced Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash, and cats like Melle Mel as the "face of rap". They couldn't see how to stay relevant once the culture was no longer just about them. Just think--the rappers like Eazy E we also think of as gods alongside Melle Mel and Busy Bee got no love from either of those old school heads. Don't get me wrong. I love "The Message" and "White Lines". But I also realize that, musical styles can change rapidly and not everybody is able to make a transition. This is like street ball vs NBA. Many times, the top street ball champions can't make it to the level of NBA because they can only see the ball and not the business; in hip-hop, this is Melle Mel and MANY old school pioneers who still think its 1974 and your "street rep" is the most important thing people should know about you.

Well said. I was in elementary when rap first hit the scenes. I saw it go from the costume Parliament version to when Run DMC was making it change to having levels. Most of the early guys like Mel never evolved when artists like the Run DMC’s, the LL’s, the Beastie Boys, and so forth, which was the reason why they never got signed again. It’s sad that instead of being the historians and forefathers we should be proud of, most of them are not humble enough and full of pride. If iit wasn’t for the ones that came after them, then rap would had never changed to the powerhouse it is now. For Mel to crap on EM just because of his skin color is not The Message that he wrote and rapped to in the beginning, meaning that he should practice what he wrote and put on wax.

I don’t understand how there’s people defending Mel in this situation 🤦🏽‍♂️. People really gonna defend a man that counted down to 8 on a song, like it was still the 80’s 😭. Em is more than a guest in the house of hip-hop, and I’ll say it, but a lot of the haters, definitely racist. It’s so damn crazy how a lot of black history involves the idea of not judging somebody just off the color of their skin, yet there’s an excuse in this situation just cos he’s white. Even 50 has admitted he’ll beat your favorite black rapper. It’s stupid, that even Eminem had to CONSTANTLY refer that fact, he’s not number 1 cos he’s white. The man has expanded the audience for the genre, inspired greats like Cole, Kendrick, hell, Drake’s a fan. So in all honesty, Eminem’s a goat, these old-heads and their die hard fans are jealous haters and racists, and anyone who’s gonna say “oh you don’t understand” or “you don’t know hip-hop” or “did you even understand the bars”, a bunch of ignorant retards.

Melle Mel opened the door to rappers telling their story through the music. The song, The Message was groundbreaking when MCs were mainly rapping about parties and moving the crowd during the birthing years and infancy of HipHop. He talked about where he was from and introduced the world to the world of those that didn't have a voice in the world. I wish someone could tell Melle that he shouldn't feel the need to do a diss track to feel relevant or important to the culture. He is a legend. Stay on your throne as a pioneer, sir. You worked hard for that throne and everyone in the culture respects it. You shouldn't have to be in anyone's Top 20 list of greatest MCs of all time for validation. You already did the work and the bricks have been laid for everyone to walk the path. Be a leader, a consultant, and our elder statesman of HipHop. Leave the diss tracks to the kids and help guide the youth and find other ways to tell your story.

Mel and Em are only 12 years apart, I was a little shocked I thought it was more. You can only poke the Beast so many times before they lose thier patience and bite back. Mel continuously disrespected Em for years. Em held his form even giving him props when he was inducted to the R&R Hall of Fame. Em is smart, he knew it would be like this and he didn't want to diss Mel. Hes always given respect to hip hop, its history. Now when people look up Mel this is what will show up first and Mel is so much more than this spot of time. Like with MJ, the first thing that comes up is the crying meme, kids have no idea that he could fly from the free throw line and dunk the ball before anyone else's feet left the floor. I do wonder if the people around him just aren't his friends or hes not listening. I just dont understand how this made it to upload without a single person saying, "bro this is trash" Sometimes its better to just be silent than taking on a task you can no longer complete.a❤❤

Hip Hop Boulevard, the street mentioned by Fat Joe, is a section of Sedgwick Avenue near where DJ Kool Herc held the 'first' hip hop party, that's been renamed. Based on that it could have been DJ Kool Herc who Fat Joe is talking about.

I think it comes down to old dudes being jealous because they came first and didn’t get the huge paycheck. And even more jealous when people consider a white boy one of the best. But you can’t create an art everyone loves and get mad when they study and perfect it.

Smelle Smell legend as he may be, is making a frickin fool of himself.
Em is not only one of the worlds most famous mc's because of his style and wordplay, it's just what he says thats true, funny and smart.

A lot of ballplayers are like this too. They're a little earlier in their time and didn't get the money so they look down on the people eho came after.

What cracks me up is Em literally salutes more than any other rapper period to his OG's. Not only says it but he will put it in his music too! See the problem is the og's want abit of clout so that's why they go at em. We know tha play by now. Ems fan base is bananas so they get a reaction and boom. Look we talkin bout them now.

As much as the pioneers be complaining they shouldn’t be blocking their blessings like that . Like fr the golden era respect the golden age … I don’t know about these kids but the those in the 90s definitely do.

See the problem I have with that is. Nobody School cool hurt when it comes to you getting your own Block in the money that comes with that. If somebody would have simply gave him a heads-up and say yo you keep your mouth closed get your name get your block and the checks start coming afterwards. Then he wouldn't be sitting in an interview with hip hop Boulevard sitting behind his head when it should have been cool hurt Boulevard in the first place if he would have kept his mouth closed

If Melle Mel wants to battle Eminem let him, so what, that's hip hop. Win or lose let that man enjoy what he helped to create. To jump on his back for it is crazy.
