  • Today, we're checking out a Gundam game that may just be older than you:
    Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack
Released in Japan for the PlayStation 1 back in 1998, the gameplay and mechanics presented here genuinely surprised me.
While visually the game may look a bit dated, it actually holds up pretty good considering its age.
Let me know down below which Gundam games you would like to see covered in the future!

While it's true that AEUG vs. Titans didn't see a western release, we did get Gundam vs. Z Gundam, which has all of the previous game's content AND all the units, pilots, and stages from the earlier Federation vs. Zeon, plus lots of extras!

  • @Renorick1
    @Renorick1 Месяц назад +42

Western Gundam fans are most definitely starved for games content in the current day. And, in my experience anyway, what little we do get tends to have something wrong with it. (GBO2 PC port, I'm looking at you.)
["And another thing!" EDIT]: And unlike Macross, they haven't had their hands legally tied for the past 30-ish years!

Gameplay is fine, good even (if you pay attention to the tutorials), if a bit of an adjustment compared to other titles.
For the port it's the infrastructure, the network, that's been the biggest pain in everyone's ass. Matchmaking that takes forever and fails more often than not. Laggy, drop-prone game sessions when you do miraculously get a session. Compound the auto-bans that result from dropped connections on top of that, and you have a recipe for a pissed off playerbase.
And don't get people started on the pay tokens and how they handled clan rewards after some folks hacked 'em.
      Dumpster.
      Fire.

It's pretty wild how good the models look for PS1. I mean I'mn sure you're upscaling the game, but still the devs really took advantage of every polygon they could use. The only thing that looked off to me was the blocky Zaku II heads, but that's super understandable with how low the polygon budget was.
Game basically looks like a PS1 Encounter in Space to me, and I mean that in the most positive way.

In my country moded PS1s and PS2s were the norm, you could buy burned discs everywhere for a couple of bucks, there was a store that focused mostly on Japan exclusive games, that is how I first played this game many years ago, I knew very little about Gundam but I really enjoyed it, the Z Gundam game is also really good, I believe it uses the same engine. Zeonic Front made me feel the same fear that Zeon pilots felt when they saw the RX-78-2, the mission were you have to spy on White Base was nerve-wracking 🤣🤣🤣

I remember playing this game on my PS classic back in 2019 [the last decent year for me] and I actually got to see the movie it was based on in theaters the same year. It was one of the best movie going experiences of my entire life. I wish I could go back in time to relive that moment. I dedicate my comment to Michael Kopsa [1956-2022], who IMO will always be the definitive voice of Char Aznable

One thing I love about older Gundam games is the way they handle the camera. A lot of the modern titles default to the standard right stick 3D camera control. But the older titles are a bit more intentional with that design choice and it contributes heavily to how the games feel to play and the way they convey the feeling of piloting an MS.

This game is gving me super strong prototype Gundam Federation vs. Zeon vibes and I love it. Despite being made in the 90s, the game looks fun and the story does a great job in presenting some parts of the OYW and Char's Counterattack. Still say that Char was super stupid as hell in the movie to drop a huge ass Axis on Earth but at least the Nu vs. Sazabi fight was dope. Great job looking into this game!

    Awesome as usual.
Also the thing you said about gundam fans in the West being starved for content is so true.
After the PS2 Era there are significantly few gundam games. Like in the Ps3 era we got Crossfire (God forbid), The Dynasty Warriors Gundam Series with the last one being digital only and only getting a physical release in Europe. G Generation Series had like 5 releases.
Out of which we got 1.5.
Like I am not sure if Genesis counts while it did get translated in English for some Asian regions. It never came to the states side. And War, World and Overworld on PSP are still on the PSP. Untranslated.
Overworld did actually get a fan translation though.
So other than that we had Cross Rays and then Battle Alliance.

Honestly, would really like to see Bandai try to remake any of the Gundam games that was released on PS2 and even PSP. We need more people to know about the ealry UC timeline, including the OYW.
Another thing to add is that I want to suggest a Gundam game for the PSP which part of the Gundam Battle series (Or Battle Operation series as of recent), Gundam Battle Universe. Other than Gundam Vs NEXT, GBU is one the best in the PSP line up of the Gundam Battle series I've played. The game allows you to play as an MS pilot who take part in the war between EFS and Zeon from the OYW to the Char's counterattack incident.

If you want a game that really emulates how the horrors and how powerful the RX-78 was, look no further than gundam crossfire! It's an absolutely brutal game, and it was clear it was a bit rushed; but if you can fight your way through it, it's a really cool and unique game! Don't worry about playing on easy, for the first playthrough you really need it, and it's suggested to go up a difficulty each loop around anyways.
Enemies can have parts blown off like arms, and sometimes legs, but you aren't protected from that either! You die just as fast as them on the harder difficulties, and when you have to pay for repairs, miss out on days, and sometimes missions, it can be really difficult t o manage.
Bonus note: the game got an english release too!

Still have a copy of this game stowed away despite not having access to a PS1(used a PS1 emulator Bleem,CVGS, and epsxe on a Pentium). Used to play this game with my cousins and they kept wondering why I can easily beat them (did not told them that there is a way to target specific parts and often disabled them and toyed with them dodging repeated shots to prolong the battle after they lost the head and legs).
Was actually disappointed with the movie Char's Counterattack after finding a copy of it to learn that it did not include the 0079 scenes which was quite good.
After this game, ended up playing SD Gundam GGeneration F to get better understanding of the 0079 story (vcd copies of gundam were expensive back then and vhs copies are even rarer).
Loved the weapons load-out of the ReGZ

On the topic of great gundam games that aren't released in the west I'd consider checking out some of the psp titles specifically Gundam Battle Universe, it's similar in ways to gundam vs zeta however the story goes up to I believe CCA and the main story has you create a character and go through scenarioes increasing your attributes similar to that one game mode from encounters in space, the only issue is most of the text is in japanese and it can be quite hard to get a grasp but the controls are all explained with visual guides in the tutorial, it's just navigating the menus

if try a srw game and eyeing the english localized versions strongly recommend srw V first then 30. mainly it got more gundam series in it showcasing zeta, zz, chars, hathaways flash (note this is before the film version released), crossbone, seed destiny, 00 movie, and unicorn. story wise is more focused with the main lead of that game is the yamato warship from space battleship yamato: 2199 the remake of the original yamato series and interesting story intereaction with them and crossbone gundam characters.
srw V is available on ps4, vita, switch and steam but only japan steam. you could try to play the pc version but warning that ppl say you could get your american steam account banned. i own the switch version.
