I am Italian and I was raised with the concept of bella figura, which means to always show at your best! I generally follow this rule: I wear and buy very basic clothes together with original (sometimes vintage second hand or handmade) unique accessories such as shoes/glasses/earrings/bracelets/bags/hats. I always add my perfume and that's all I think : )
Brava! Like my nonna would say: you should always look put together otherwise is disrespectful toward other. Shes 84 and still wears everything with 100% confidence
My nonna as well, she's 80 and she's always dressed up with lipstick, earrings, medium heels, elegant bags and shoes. She doesn't understand why young girls keep dressing like boys 😂
You know that if you look rubbish and run to the shop everyone you know will see you at the shop. But when your dressed to the Nines you won't pass by anyone
My grandfather was Italian-American, and he always called fare bella figura, “Lookin’ sharp”. He was mainly a carpenter by trade, but when he went anywhere not work related, he always wore a collared polo shirt, slacks, leather loafers and a matching belt. He had a thick mane of silver hair he’d comb up, for extra fullness, and he always wore cologne. He had swagger. Getting a “Ya look sharp, kid” from him was always the absolute pinnacle of style compliments for me. Without being able to describe any elements, my best outfits are the ones where I look in the mirror and think, “ya look sharp, kid”.
Lol you sound like my daughter when she speaks Italian! One thing I noticed in my 21 years in the states is that I get the comment “why are you so dressed up “ and I’m only wearing jeans and a shirt, but my mother inspected our clothes for stains, holes and wrinkles and that was part of the “bella figura” so wearing simple basics in great shape is one of my Italian secrets, also less is more, meaning pieces that are timeless and flattering not fussy and frilly. This video brought a big smile to my face thank you beautiful!
That happens to me as well. My Italian mother and nonno -who was a tailor and lived with us- would make sure we looked decent before leaving the house. I get a little tired of people insinuating that I' 'dressing up' to make them look bad! That just motivates me to dress up even more :).
I'm Italian, I live abroad since 15 years, but I'm there 3 or 4 times a year. I love your videos, because you bring the warm confidence and the personal touch that is an important part of Italy. This said, I think that in Italy there is a lot of pressure on women that really, really need to be always looking good and put together, this brings a lot of insecurities too. More over, it can also be very expensive, because your hair, your eyebrows, your clothes, your make up, your body shape, your skin, must be perfect. There is less a culture of second hand shops in Italy (even though it's improving), but at the market and at outlets you can find good things at a low price. I love that you always talk about being confident with your body and your personality and the impact that this can have on your personal style, because that's really the key. One Italian thing that any one can enjoy is quality over quantity (this goes for style, but also for food), enjoying some small breaks with a nice coffee or a good wine and being nice, even to the people your meet only once (a "please" and a "thank you" for the waiters, a little smile while saying "good morning"...you don't need to become besties, just be polite and remember that every one has a life that could be challenging from time to time)...maybe this is always the case in Canada, but here in Germany is not like that, so I bring this kindness with me.
Canadians are super friendly, it even became an Internet joke. Germans aloof and polite. They are more sparse with words, they rather show kindness in actions than in everyday small talk.
Ah yes quality over quantity in all aspects is a great and beautiful point. I also loved how you bring up the importance of kindness and being polite! In all situations! Thank you for sharing xx
Thank you An G, I too love the confident Italian aesthetic but appreciate that you mention the pressure and expense put on women and girls to maintain this facade of perfection. Also I think your comments on quality vs quantity and generally being a gracious and courteous person are on point regarding style.
My late and incredibly stylish Italian mother drilled into us the BELLA FIGURA philosophy, so I always try to look my best. Even if I'm just taking a walk, on a zoom call or running errands, I always want to feel 'bella'. I live in NYC which so many people equate with style, but is now the capital of frump, so I really hope people start to wear real clothing again as we come out of lockdowns.
Ahh I think Americans believe stylish=uncomfortable/repressed, and if you look at American fashion before the mid 60s, you can see why. But it's absolutely possible to look elegant and be comfortable and wholly yourself.

Definitely coming to this a little late, but I keep finding your videos. I currently live in Italy (lucky me!!!) and one of many goals is to figure out the style! People seem so obsessed with French, but that one is easy. Italian is way more fun and way more challenging! In bella Napoli, I see lots of black, especially relaxed suits, with pristine white sneakers, but as soon as I get to Rome I see bright monochromatic suits of every color of the rainbow with stilettos, and it just gets more eccentric from there! But the number one: their hair and makeup is always done, the sunglasses are fabulous, and if they wear glasses, they are fabulous, too, and they don’t shy away from jewelry. And black eyeliner.

Complimenti per il tuo Italiano and keep on doing slow fashion videos, such a great idea! 💖
Thanks, Alyssa. I think Italian people are the best dressed in the world. They are true peacocks. It would seem they spend a lot of money on quality, classic items in mainly neutral colours & put in a great deal of effort into their appearance. I think it does give you confidence to dress well. Glad you mentioned the points about proportion & fit as that is where I sometimes struggle & could learn a lot from Italians & their “Bella Figura”.
I think this is the first time you didn't begin with "Ciao," and you're talking about Italian style. I was starting to feel deprived until you got to 0:54! Love these...
I love this! My mother was born in Italy. She was so naturally beautiful and always looked so put together. She could never understand women (and men) who leave the house looking like they just crawled out of bed. I guess I have the same mentality as her. I tell my husband, the only way I’d go outside like that is if the house was on fire! 🤣. It’s a blessing and a curse. Thank you for your videos!
In hot summer weather we Italian ladies try to stick to natural textile fibers like cotton, linen, silk. They keep our bodies cooler since they transpire better. Yes, they are more expensive, but better buy less pieces of a higher quality.
I really think it's time for Italian, Swedish and Danish people to be on the spotlight and to be praised for their effortless style. Yes, Italian and Scandi are different but the way they "flow" is the same.
Italian subscriber here watching this video being like 😍👏🏻 Brava!! Classic but personal style never goes out of trend! That said italians are able to wear terrible things too, just like the rest of the world does, trust me!! Baci da Firenze 💖🇮🇹
ooooh THANK YOU! That is high praise! haha I do believe you and I'm glad you shared that Italians can make style missteps just like the rest of the world! Thank you for sharing and un abbraccio da Canada! xx
K, italian here from Rome, or I should say half Italian/half swiss, and I completely understand what you mean. I actually learned many stilish tips from my nonna because as my mum, being swiss, never put that much interest in clothing, but not my nonna. She even used to have dresses made for us by a seamstress 😊 and it's really something I want to learn to do in the future, so that I can create my own clothing.
Ahahah ahah... As italian I am feeling as I were on Discovery Channel😂 Thank you Alyssa, I never took occasion of finding out my cultural way of dressing. It is always difficult to generalize, but you took some interesting aspects. I think we use a lot of colors, crazy patterns, different textures, elegant statement pieces, unique artisanal bags and accessories. Quality shoes make a big difference together with hair styling. I am proud of all I wear. Not for vanity, but to feel really myself, always. Being put together is not just a way of expressing myself but also a way of creating a good mood with the others.. If you are waiting for guests, don't you want to let them feel good..? From the big town to the little village, you will find style and confident woman with beautiful make up that makes them bright. Even for a mountain trekking holiday I organize the color match(clothing and rucksack😁) The reality is that WE LOVE BEAUTY. We breath, eat, watch, live beauty. I wish you all the same!!! Greetings from the sun country! 😃
Esatto! I feel the same way, although I lived in different countries, my "italianità" followed me around like a faithful shadow. This is an intrinsic part of my genetic makeup. I believe Italians are born with a schematic already filled with notions of beauty, style, proportion and enjoyment. It just comes natural and easy to envision what looks good. I believe the beauty, symmetry and timelessness of the Renaissance's principles still play a role in Italian "modo di essere". I live in the States and, no matter how casual my life could be, if I walk my dog or do gardening, I have to be put together for "amor proprio", love of one's self.
Such a great video! Apart from their great style, the confidence that comes from the inside of the beautiful Italian ladies is what always keeps them looking beautiful!
Thank you!! I recently discovered Italian style in my fashion quests, and I feel like I have found my family. 💖 It was getting so discouraging seeing all the Parisian style that saturates Pinterest, and the over abundance of French minimalism that is classic, and admirable, but not for me. Everything about Italian women, from the culture, the mindset, the style- I feel like I have found my people. 💛 please do more videos! It’s hard to find content on this!
My mother is 86 years old...to this day she cares about 'la bella figura'-always gets dressed up in the morning, puts on makeup, and has an elegant, classic style. She also still mindful of her posture--a sure sign of confidence and elegance! And she loves her sunnies! Thank you for this video--a reminder to me, especially in this pandemic, that we still need to be intentional in our dress (when we actually get dressed!! :) Hai fatto benissimo!
This is SO timely for me. I am taking an online body silhouette course and really learning what looks good on me and why. Have always enjoyed the more relaxed, fun Italian style.
Haha the bella figura concept is so foreign to me who grew up in the Colorado mountains. I feel most comfortable in athletic pants, a fleece, and sneakers. But I love to watch videos like this to see new things and it's so delightful to see people who have fun with fashion!
In another one of your videos, you talked about adjectives you/we might use to describe our personal style--to me, yours is always "elegant", no matter how casual or dressed up. It must be how la bella figura finds its way into your style--always an inspiration!
My second video today on things Italian. I really love how the Italian woman is not afraid to show off as it were here best feature. You are so right that everyone has a great feature. It’s hard I think to look at yourself and say wow that is really great about me. This is harder as we grow older especially here in the U. S. I live in Southern California and it’s the youth oriented capital of the world in my opinion. Thank you for sharing things that are timeless and ageless. 💕
I do love your Italian style videos! I wish I had the confidence of an Italian woman. You’ve just made me realise that I’m never particularly comfortable in my clothes, and I’m nearly always having to adjust them - time to have a proper look at fit!
CIAO Alyssa! Me gusto tu consejo de: "dare to style your closet wardrobes without hesitate" yesterday's Sunday, we went to breakfast Wile wearing a "very Mexican top" (those hand made embroider with colorful flowers) and I got plenty of compliments, also that yesterday a wildfire turn grey our sky, and we need colors in our days. Love your video and the style advise to learn to dare, specially with the oversize shirts. Have a pleasant week! CIAO! Besos!
I have been frustrated by having a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. However, I used some of your styling pointers and put together an outfit that was stylish and lovely using things I already own. It's not a matter of not having the right things, but not knowing how to style them. Thank you so much!
Great video. I love the videos you make on this topic. I agree, Italian people have a special way of dressing. I also like how they dress casually but yet they look dressed up.
Come italiana 🇮🇹...

Hi Alyssa. I've just discovered your channel and I love it so much! I used to live in Italy (Rome) and the Italian style is so magical. I work with ladies over 50 who want to look and feel fabulous and they can learn a lot from Italian style and way of wearing things. Italian style crosses all ages. Thanks so much for this great video. XX
I'm watching you for the first time - I love your smile and energy; you present your points quickly enough to keep me interested and not overwhelming the viewer with additional chit chat. Knowing what flatters my body! Good point! I have no idea (sad face). I will keep watching your videos :)
Hi Elizabeth! Thank you so much for watching!! I'm so glad you enjoy the channel despite the seasonality difference! Australia is so beautiful - hope you're enjoying fall!
Hi Alyssa, I've been following you for a long time and I love your videos, especially the ones about shopping your closet! I'm Italian and I found this video interesting. I agree on some points, such as the one about dressing in a way that enhances one's physical assets that many Italian women have in common. Making a "bella figura", however, is more a form of respect toward yourself and others and a form of personal dignity and not necessarily a manifestation of self-confidence. In general, in Italy (especially in Northern Italy) many women have a style that, curiously enough, coincides with the concept of "French chic", even if it is a style that abroad is rather attributed to French women, i.e. it's more classic/minimalist. Anyway, a beautiful video like all your videos! Big hugs
ah thank you so much for touching on this! I should have gone into more detail about bella figura as pride of self and place and as you said, respect for yourself and others. Thank you so much for sharing this, as well as the different styles through Italy! I so appreciate this! Big hugs back! xx
I love your Italian...I am learning Italian via Babbel and I understood almost all of what you said. :) You are correct tho' I love way Itailian women in Roma dressed. I spent 3 week there a few years ago in May and was amazed at how many women wore summer dresses...and no yoga pants like here in USA.
Love it! I'm glad to see you focus on Italian style. I remember traveling to Italy with my mom and our tour guide was so chic and she rocked her wedges even while walking. She was simply ageless and I Ioved her style. Thanks for sharing these tips and would love more!
This isn't just Italian perspective it's also an American thing based on a time period here in the States. My grandparents were depression era and had respect for themselves and their belongings growing up with very little. That translated into adults that had a bit more formality as well as beautiful clothing that they took care of. My grandparents and my parents never stepped out of the house without looking their best regardless of income level. This has been passed on to me and to my kid. My husband had a similar upbringing and is very much the same. While it might be more commonplace in Italy they're just as many people here who have the same mindset. It's a respect for self and for others around you. The respect for yourself can't be taken away by someone else. We just get lost in the sea of social norms where lack of respect for self and others has become commonplace.
I was in Italy back in 1988! The one thing I noticed was that all the girls young and old looks so feminine. Girls wore skirts while riding their bikes. They just seemed confident and put together. I was a sloppy tourist who had just returned from Egypt and I felt really frumpy. I am now a 30 pound overweight 70 year old with most of my weight in my middle. I need help with my style. I do not have alot of money. Could you do a video for us older women?? I love your video.
Ciao, Bella! I just stumbled on your video, and I'm so pleased that I did. How fun to hear you speaking Italian- I'm sure it makes i genitori orgogliosi! I miss Italy and always loved seeing the Italian women, men and children! looking stylish, put together, and looking fine when I lived in the Milan area. These were all wonderful tips that, as you say, speak to the general culture in Italy and the way they tend to emphasize aesthetics as a point of self respect and respect for others, and also how they prioritize their budgets- rather different than a typical American.
That’s because 75% of Americans are fat. Most families eat fast food packaged food, and rarely take the time to cook fresh. Couples both work striving for the American dream 👎, not even raising their own children anymore, they’ve gotta have those two new cars!!Italians are not this way at all. They dress in quality garments enjoy life enjoy family, enjoy cooking, and rent a flat. They own scooters.
Hi Alyssa! Great video! How I miss travel and our next trip will include Italy! Enjoyed hearing you speaking Italian!! My parents always dressed nicely and I like to think it rubbed off on me! Ciao!!

Lol I realized that when I was editing! xx
Say more about how Italians dress for their hot weather!
great suggestion thank you! xx
Exactly!!! It’s boiling in Italy 🇮🇹 in the summer!!
@@Ingrid0410 AND here in Florida ! 😭😭😭
In hot summer weather we Italian ladies try to stick to natural textile fibers like cotton, linen, silk. They keep our bodies cooler since they transpire better. Yes, they are more expensive, but better buy less pieces of a higher quality.
Perfectly said!! That is why i love sitting at a cafe terrace in Milano, watch the world go by and get inspired!!
I really think it's time for Italian, Swedish and Danish people to be on the spotlight and to be praised for their effortless style. Yes, Italian and Scandi are different but the way they "flow" is the same.
So true, grandparents and mother is italian, spent many years in and out of italia. You did a great job. BRAVA!
as an italian i appreciated this video so much....what you say it's so true....you dress well for you and for the people around you...
You REALLY got my attention when you said PLAYFUL, PLAYING with your clothes. And COLORFUL. 💖 That's why we're HERE!!!
aw yes! That is what its about! xx
Hello there
Love hearing you speak ITALIAN 👏🏼
Aw thank you! It needs some work but I'm practicing! :)
@@AlyssaBeltempo you sound perfect!
Hello there
Italian subscriber here watching this video being like 😍👏🏻 Brava!!
Thank you for sharing and un abbraccio da Canada! xx
Hello
K, italian here from Rome, or I should say half Italian/half swiss, and I completely understand what you mean. I actually learned many stilish tips from my nonna because as my mum, being swiss, never put that much interest in clothing, but not my nonna. She even used to have dresses made for us by a seamstress 😊 and it's really something I want to learn to do in the future, so that I can create my own clothing.
Ahahah ahah... As italian I am feeling as I were on Discovery Channel😂
Thank you Alyssa, I never took occasion of finding out my cultural way of dressing.
Even for a mountain trekking holiday I organize the color match(clothing and rucksack😁)
The reality is that WE LOVE BEAUTY.
I agree - I find Parisian style kind of boring and not very applicable to the masses, but Italian style is much easier and more "personal"!
:) Hai fatto benissimo!
ah grazie Manuela! Thank you for sharing about your mum! xx
Hello Manuela
You make me want to go back to Italy! went only once! You were lucky to have both parents speaking Italian so you could learn as a child: the best!!!
Thank you! Yes it was the first language I learned! xx
Grazie per i favolosi suggerimenti! You are an excellent example of beautiful Italian styling.
wow grazie per il complimento Sally! I appreciate the kind words!
I never felt so dowdy as when in Rome . My goodness the fashion and styling is superb . Such confidence, a touch of drama as you say 😊
This is SO timely for me. I am taking an online body silhouette course and really learning what looks good on me and why. Have always enjoyed the more relaxed, fun Italian style.
Ooh so interesting Kathy! Let us know how it goes I'm so interested in that subject!
Hi Kathy
I always consider Italian dressing as just being classic Thanks for sharing and blessing to you and all in the days to come.
Thank you for the kind words Libby!
Wonderful Alyssa! I love both the Italian and French style for different reasons. So glad you're doing more on Italian style!
Italians are super stylish. They have a great aesthetical taste and that shows in style, fashion and italian design.
Bravo these are fabulous videos and mindset on the Italian Style Guide really appreciate you!
Love , love this kind of video ! Very useful and fun!
yay! Glad you liked it xx
Always a pleasure watching your videos! Such classic and beautiful looks! 😀
Hello Raquel
I do love your Italian style videos! I wish I had the confidence of an Italian woman. You’ve just made me realise that I’m never particularly comfortable in my clothes, and I’m nearly always having to adjust them - time to have a proper look at fit!
I'm so glad you learned something from the video, hopefully some adjustments will make all the difference!
Hello Keapix
I'm Zimbabwean and absolutely love Italian fashion
CIAO Alyssa!
Me gusto tu consejo de: "dare to style your closet wardrobes without hesitate" yesterday's Sunday, we went to breakfast Wile wearing a "very Mexican top" (those hand made embroider with colorful flowers) and I got plenty of compliments, also that yesterday a wildfire turn grey our sky, and we need colors in our days.
Love your video and the style advise to learn to dare, specially with the oversize shirts.
Have a pleasant week! CIAO! Besos!
This is such an important video. I will watch it over and over.
Thank you for watching!
Beautiful video lovely!!! I love the thought process behind this, well done 👏👏❤ xx
Thank you Emily! xx
Hello Emily
I have been frustrated by having a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. However, I used some of your styling pointers and put together an outfit that was stylish and lovely using things I already own. It's not a matter of not having the right things, but not knowing how to style them. Thank you so much!
Great video. I love the videos you make on this topic. I agree, Italian people have a special way of dressing. I also like how they dress casually but yet they look dressed up.
Hello Sherry
Come italiana 🇮🇹...
I think Italian style looks great on you. I always feel it's very glamorous and often a statement style. Bellissima!
Thank you for watching Tanya! xx
I'm in the US, originally from Germany but hey, I love everything Italian! So now you have a new subscriber ❤️

Hello Amy
XX
So happy to have a Canadian fashionista! Finally, hopefully, some Canadian sources for shopping.
I love love love all your content! So inspiring🎉
I'm watching you for the first time - I love your smile and energy; you present your points quickly enough to keep me interested and not overwhelming the viewer with additional chit chat. Knowing what flatters my body! Good point! I have no idea (sad face). I will keep watching your videos :)
Thanks, Alyssa! Have a great rest of your weekend!❤️ My husband is at least 75% Italian. ❤️
Thank you for watching Heather!

Hello Elizabeth
This was such a great video, Alyssa. When I traveled to Italy years ago I was in awe of how stylish everyone was. Thank you! ~ Jennifer
Ah thank you so much for watching Jennifer it means a lot! I'm so glad you liked it :)
Hi, Jennifer! ❤️
What’s the difference between French style and Italian style?
Maybe you can make a video compare them.
Excellent idea! xx
Hello Rosane
A Parisian I know once described a French man as "just an Italian in a bad mood" LOL
Maybe if you see video French style and then compared between French and Italian...
@@yankabartosova894 the intention is to compare in the same video and show the difference..it is a good way to understand..fun..
I always love your commentary Alyssa!!! Thank you!!!!
Big hugs back! xx
Hi
Hi Alyssa, I love your videos, especially the ones where you talk about Italian style. I think you cannot hide your stylish Italian roots
Hello there
I love your Italian...I am learning Italian via Babbel and I understood almost all of what you said. :) You are correct tho' I love way Itailian women in Roma dressed. I spent 3 week there a few years ago in May and was amazed at how many women wore summer dresses...and no yoga pants like here in USA.
When it comes to fashion and design the Italians have it in spades - I also love how they adore the use of colour
I'm a great fan of ur slow fashion videos Alyssa. 🔥. U r great
Thank you for watching and the kind words Arpita! xx
Sorella‼️ I toured Italy in 2001. They loved my NYC (Harlem) outfits. It’s exactly what you just said! Thank you.💖
Love it! I'm glad to see you focus on Italian style. I remember traveling to Italy with my mom and our tour guide was so chic and she rocked her wedges even while walking. She was simply ageless and I Ioved her style. Thanks for sharing these tips and would love more!
I'm glad you like it Nancy! Loved hearing your story! xx
Hello Nancy
I absolutely love Italy and the Italian women are the best dressed!
I am going to italy in October for the first time! I want to dress like an Italian
Wow! Lucky you, you will love it! Enjoy xx
I love the idea of throwing something fun into the outfit thank you!
Italians are the best! I was so impressed when i first went to Italy 21 years ago!
Delicious detail: the way your sleeve lining matches your belt! Swoon!
ahhh thank you!:)
I thought the “delicious detail” is how she hung her sweater 😂
Ciao, Bella! I just stumbled on your video, and I'm so pleased that I did. How fun to hear you speaking Italian- I'm sure it makes i genitori orgogliosi! I miss Italy and always loved seeing the Italian women, men and children! looking stylish, put together, and looking fine when I lived in the Milan area. These were all wonderful tips that, as you say, speak to the general culture in Italy and the way they tend to emphasize aesthetics as a point of self respect and respect for others, and also how they prioritize their budgets- rather different than a typical American.
absolutely! I'm so glad you enjoyed this and how amazing you lived in Milan :) Thank you so much for watching and the insight! xx
Yay Alyssa! Another Italian style video!!! My fave! 😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hi Nicole
I am a petite Sicilian/ Italian American. SOS! American retailers have only large people clothing!
Ciao!!

Loved your video on the Italian style - such a marvelous culture of style.
This was such a fun and informative video. High five on this info. Thank you. ❤
Alyssa, loved this video. Fare la Bella figura indeed. You mention how wearing clothing that makes you feel confident affects how you see yourself and how the world sees you. Yes! Enclothed cognition (Adam & Galinsky, 2012).
I'm an Australian born Italian and would love to see more Italian style. I've looked at French style and while is suits some, it looks really boring on me. Maybe it's the dramatic Italian in me! 😜
haha maybe! Thanks for sharing and watching! xx
