@@oscarsanchez3886 You assume a lot. Judges work within the confines of sentencing guidelines, can't preemptively jail or imprison people and there's no system of mental institutions in CA to possibly institutionalize insane people--which the guy in this case obviously is. Ronald Reagan--a Republican--shut that all down as CA governor in the '70s. There's nothing any judge could have done to prevent some insane person having an episode from doing what they did in this case. Just because a cop arrests someone prior doesn't equal a proper arrest that a judge can uphold, pretrial. Then there's due process of law before finding guilt/conviction and sentencing. + Judges in Los Angeles are elected, not appointed. A more likely scenario is a two-person car: a female rookie with a male field training officer who chose to do the driving. He got out to contact the suspect or do some other business, and had his trainee wait in the passenger seat. Suspect jumped in and took off.

When I was a cop around 1993 a male officer friend from Dxxx City had HIS patrol car stolen by a handcuffed female. He had the reputation of a good cop and likable guy.
You’d be surprised how many times cop cars are stolen. His was the first time I heard about one, but it does happen. It is a huge embarrassment for the officer. Before social media it used to get covered up if there wasn’t an accident.
It happens because officers leave their vehicles running at some scenes. After his car was stolen our department changed policy to heavily suggest vehicles are turned off and keys removed. There are times you barely throw your car in park and jump out.
