      @@erwinadriaensen Of all of Redcat's crawler offerings, the Gen8 is the only one approaching "sorta okay," and it still has matchstick axles. The Gen7 and the rest of the SCX10 clonery are all just bad, from the quality of the materials to the terrible geometry. They have somehow artificially elevated themselves from cheap cloner company to where they fancy themselves some kind of competitor to the "Big 3" (a Gen9 costs as much as an Ecto) and I don't get it. Redcat crawlers are cash pits, kings of the false economy, and I think to just be avoided. There are so many good options out there, I don't know why people suffer with Redcats.

      In my case, I was getting in the hobby to take the boys out with a friend. We started with the red cat Danchee, which short of having garbage tires, too much articulation, and very wimpy steering servos especially with the servo savers “spring loaded steering arm”, oh and the dual motor calibration is off “ Durring crawl the front will pull but the rear won’t till too much throttle is applied “ besides all that it was good and hung with my buddies element ecto on some obstacles.
      Then my son drove a Redcat gen 8 and fell in love. So he got one for Christmas. Then previously mentioned buddy bought a Gen 8 for his wife who showed no interest in the hobby. So he sold it to me for $225 still in the box.
      And then it started… performing alternate mods on each of the gen 8’s to compare and see if it helped or not? Getting info on the gen 8 and 9 site, real world crawling with friends, late night Amazon hail marries “ Guessing which parts would improve the vehicle’s “. And now I have your channel to learn/ let you do the hail marries for me.
      You are a true financial blessing. And thank you!
      Point being, it really does not matter what I started with, through lots of trial and err . And guidance from your channel and real would experience. My ultimate outcome will be a very purpose built Redcat that will probably only have Redcat batterie hold down straps and nothing else if that.
      The Redcat Got me in. But Crawler Canyon is going to help get me to we’re we want to be!
      Thank you Crawler Canyon for all the work you do for us.

    It is not your fault that it took you 8 minutes to get the esc setup. That rc4gs is FHSS (frequency hoping spread spectrum). It’s causing interference with the Bluetooth and stomping all over the connection to your phone. That’s why it worked immediately after you turned the remote off. I’m not a fan of the esc70 but I am a wireless network engineer and that’s the nature of FHSS. It destroys WiFi and Bluetooth environments. It’s also why you could make changes in the app when the remote wasn’t close to the esc.

    Good on you for trying the POS70 again. Without a doubt, that ESC is glitchy AF. It seems like they're pretty hit or miss, which is honestly not surprising to me. I bought one last summer and the programming and connection aspects of it were basically flawless. I was out trailing and would frequently connect my phone to make small changes and adjustments and never ran into the same issues you did. I did end up replacing it with a 1080 because the downhill control was pretty poor, and gave the ESC70 someone who killed it in water on the first use. Mr canyon! I know your done with this esc but I've found out something very important after getting mine that may solve most of your issues at least radio to esc communication. I have the same radiolink remote and receiver.thr rc6gs V3. The radiolink has same issue as frsky R9 does in fpv. If your radio is to close to your vehicle your car will not connect. Once I move my radio away some on desk everything works flawless. When your radio doesn't connect it will cause errors on app and give you hard time. Just wanted to let you know in case you wanted to make use of it. Working great here. 💯🤜

      Someone mentioned the FHSS/BT interference issue last year during my first tussle with the ESC70, and I even tried pairing with the radio off, or outside (and I'm in a metal building, Faraday cage style) but saw no change. The app is flaky, and they must have spent literal pennies on the BT module inside the ESC. I have a set of Sennheiser BT earbuds that will maintain perfect connection like... 100+ feet from the phone. In my (sadly not limited) experience, the ESC70 is just terrible.

      @@northernlightsrc8994 have had my GT5 for almost a year and am on the second set of batteries. I may not crawl as much as many but extremely happy with the GT5. Love the ease of the wheel and setting endpoints. Only reason for me to get another radio is for my RC4WD Bully 2. The GT5 can't do dual ESC and motor so for that either Radiolink 6 or Flysky Noble. Tale of 2 costs there if you look at them.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Год назад +4

      Lemme give you my take on the GT5: it is not nearly as capable as a Radiolink RC4/6, but it really just works. I can't really fault it. If you have a rig needing 4 or less channels, it's great-- I just pretend those knobs aren't even there. Almost all of my bashers are on GT5s now, and I have no plans to replace them. But the radios running those bashers are GT5s that have been gradually rotated out of crawler service, because I've come to want more channels, more adjustability, and more neat-o features. So if you already own a GT5, you didn't throw your money away, but in the future, take a look at the Radiolinks. I have over a dozen RC4s at this point.
      Oh, GT5s do eat batteries-- my thinking is it's because they only use 4 AAs, when most every radio is using six-- 50% less total capacity will usually give 50% less runtime.

    I wouldn't have tried as much as you did to get the ESC working. Just stick with the 1080. Once we move to software control we're going to be subjected to buggy apps and have to suffer through updates, and changes to get something that should just work via hardware. I have lots of issues with castle's phone app as well. I found my active drag brake had to be set around 15 to get good drag brake on a TRX4. I work in software, and the VP of our customer is always saying that the user experience is paramount regardless of what you can do.

    My esc70 worked perfectly, unless you wanted a drag brake that could actually stop or hold the car on even a slight grade. No matter what programming options I tried, the car would roll down a hill, or off an obstacle instead of holding the position like any other drag brake would/should. Fusion Pro that replaced it has been prefect.

    I need your opinion on motor/ ESC.
    I’m running a hobby wing 1080 with a Holmes hobby 13 turn 5 slot crawler on my red cat gen 8. My friend has an Element se with a fusion se 1200, and it is so smooth!!!
    My question is after watching your resent videos would you rather do a fusion se 1200 for $70.
    Or a 3542 9imod out runner $35. A Rino 70 amp esc $70. Rino programmer plug $10. Should be able to use my kids laptop to set up. Roughly $115.
    My plan is to do a $65. Amazon Kevlar LCG kit and a $30. Amazon center mount non-dig, non-2 speed transmission. 2200 3s battery mounted between the front shock mounts. I also have a new set of KLR/M tires and my dessert lizards are set to droop. Rear axle touches frame rail and front axle as low as I could get it.
    Other that throwing away the red cat that you despise and starting over with let’s say a vanquish, Lol. which motor / esc combo would you recommend if you had my set up?
    Oh and I’m on the face book gen 8and 9 site. And aside from very little parts available, the gen 9 seems to leaves a lot to be desired, but I would love to see Redcat send you one to test on your proving grounds.
    Thank you for all you do for us viewers, and have a great day!

      The drawback to any outrunner setup is "survivability." They are open to potential threats that inrunners or 2-in-1s (like Fusions) simply are not. So if you're building something as a pure rock crawler, I would say Rhino + outrunner. But if that rig is gonna go "out in the world," I'd still lean toward the Fusion SE. Simple wiring, clean install, and as close as we have to "set it and forget it."
      That Gen8 is portal, correct? Then it's the SE 1800. The 1200 would be SLOW. If you're going the dedicated route and the outrunner, I'm not sure on the appropriate KV as I don't know what the FDR is on the Gen8. Lots of folks like something in the 2250 range, I'm more of an 1800 and under guy.

    • @CPPDIYJEEPXJ
      @CPPDIYJEEPXJ Год назад

      Yes gen 8 is a 2 : 1 portal. I run the 12 tooth pinion with 3s. It came factory with 17 tooth. Not sure what the factory spur gear is, but it’s stock. The weight is roughly 8 lbs with 2200 battery, and 1.2 lbs factory body with trimmed inner fender wells on body and no inner fender or running boards on frame.
      I am also a fan of slow. But I do also need speed to up right , drive out of endos, and launch when slow fails. Sorry for off the top of my head verbiage.
      I just watched your fusion Se 1200kV to 1800kV comparison, and at the end you mentioned a 1800kV swap on one of your brushed portal vehicles. Maybe I should hold off and purchase the Amazon LCG kit you did a review on not long ago. And wait for the results of your comparison?

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Год назад +1

      @@CPPDIYJEEPXJ the 1800 went into a VFD Twin mated to TRX-4 axles, and it is SLOW. I had to go up 4 teeth on the pinion just to get some wheelspeed back. I personally wouldn't put the 1200 on anything portal'd, as the amount of gear reduction will result in a ridiculously slow top speed. If I put a 9T pinion on the VFD Twin, I don't think that rig could even make 1.5mph-- with an 1800. With the 1200, under 1mph for sure.
      The Canyon is down to a trio of brushed rigs, just 3 out of 24. Meanwhile, something like 14 Fusions.

    • @CPPDIYJEEPXJ
      @CPPDIYJEEPXJ Год назад

      So if I go with the fusion 1800. For $70. I could almost get the generic Amazon LCG set for about the same price as the 3542 out runner set up previously mentioned.
      Didn’t you say something about the traxxas portals being lower than 2:1?
      Oh and from your experience with low center of gravity frame builds, do they generally require different links and driveshafts?
      Thank you for your input and videos for that matter. I’m sure the red cat guys and gals also appreciate you as well!

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Год назад +1

      @@CPPDIYJEEPXJ I just know that when you put TRX-4 axles even where another portal used to be, it gets slower. So the portals are probably still 2:1 (iv'e never counted the teeth) but those are some slow axles.
      When I converted Yella to the Amazon LCG I didn't use the included skid and just used the Element skid I already had, so none of the link lengths changed-- but if you use any skid other than what you're using now, link lengths will change. If you're talking about the skid-forward LCG (what I used for the Colonel) you're gonna have to change most everything.

      That was my primary complaint about the ESC70-- that I could fuss and fight with it for hours and never get it to work, while someone else goes, "Well, mine works perfectly." That should be a cause for concern. That means the QC is effectively non-existent, and no one knows exactly what they're going to get. Mine was permanently retired when it would forget every time the transmitter was switched off. I would have to recalibrate the radio, the whole thing. It's not worth it.

      Honestly, had it worked decently from the go, the ESC70 still wouldn't get a recommendation from me, simply because of the app slaving.
      That's technology moving in the wrong direction, AFAIC. I've had constant issues with any device that relies on another device (usually a phone) to update itself, set parameters, what have you. There's always this point where the software/firmware in one just all of a sudden becomes incompatible with the other. So one day, the iSDT Go software won't be updated, it will stop working on phones, and then the ESC is a paperweight.
      A simple program card never goes out of style.

      I certainly won't be wasting any more of my money on them again. 👍🏻

    Well first, I really hope you don't get dislikes, I mean wtf is that about.
    It's such a shame they crapped the bed on this release, I got mine because it was half the price of a 1080 and my budget is tight. Fortunately mine worked (after some faffing) although the app is not well written.
    It doesn't have the consistency to compete with the 1080. Some worked and people got a great value capable ESC, some didn't. Some phone and hardware combos? Who knows, as you said it's not for the user to troubleshoot, ISDT should have done that.
    I do look forward to your review of the ESC90 though! (they made one)

    Ok, different subject.
    I see a lot of 1.9's on 2.2 rims. I have a set of cut canyon trails that I would like to try this set up on. I don't have money to waste, I'm in education. I cannot find much info about the performance of this, other than how to mount them. As none of my students might say - "Mr. T, educate me !" If you have a minute, please discuss this.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Год назад

      This is done to decrease sidewall height, and then improve sidehill performance. The Canyon Trail isn't an exotic compound, so it's not a real "squidgy" tire, and does not fold over very much, so I don't know if the overall performance will get better or worse. Better inserts will guarantee better performance.

    The people who defend this piece of crap amaze me. I've had horrible experiences like yours with the initial release, but the later release does work better...and it's still a terrible ESC. Programming issues and Bluetooth gimmick aside, there's really no better way to describe it than you already have...it drives like an RTR ESC. I guess if you're more into trailing or don't do much actual crawling it would get you by, but at that point I don't know why you wouldn't either just use the ESC that came with the truck, or spend the extra $20 and get a 1080. An overly complicated RTR quality ESC that, even when it works perfectly, is still buggy and unreliable, and costs more than half of what the second-best brushed ESC on the market costs...this just doesn't have a place.

    • @CrawlerCanyon
      @CrawlerCanyon  Год назад

      I've started to arrive at a position of "who is this thing even for?" It encourages the old "nickel and dime," where people end up paying what they perceive to be a small amount, but end up spending far more in the long run as if you do this for awhile, you find out that a $25 ESC paired to a $20 motor is better than what came in the RTR to begin with. I can't conceive that anyone supporting the ESC70 has ever driven a Fusion or an outrunner setup, because the ESC70 doesn't even compare. Not even close.
      Some folks live by an adage of "cheaper is better," where I've reached a point where it is 100% more accurate to say "cheaper is cheaper." And take that from a guy whose overall favorite tire is a tuned-up Canyon Trail. If the (arguably) best brushed ESC you can buy is $43, what does anyone really gain by trading $18 in "savings" for a buggy product shaped like a headache?

    • @idiot_RC
      @idiot_RC Год назад

      @@CrawlerCanyon in all honesty, I think a lot of people who defend the ESC70 are bandwagoneers who don't even own it, and a lot of the others are just trying to avoid admitting they wasted their money. I also think a lot of people only have RTR equipment to compare it to and have not even driven a 1080 much less the other configurations you mentioned, so, not to say their opinion doesn't matter, but their experience isn't exactly relevant in terms of what an "upgrade" is. I've given the thing several opportunities just as you have, and they've pretty well made their way through my local crawler group, and out of 18 people, one guy likes it, and he's absolutely the type to say an Axial RTR brushed motor is as good as a Team Brood or Holmes...delusional people just trying to validate their delusions, pure and simple. Like I've told everyone who's talked up the ESC70 to me...the 1080 is the baseline to which all brushed ESC should be compared, and even when it's working as well as it can and you ignore the bugs and gimmicks, the ESC70 simply doesn't perform as well. $25 isn't cheap enough to justify putting up with it...MAYBE if it were $9.99.

  • @JViello

    Credit to you that you listened to your viewers and tried it again. The fail here IMO is you and this ESC are just not really compatible. You're a middle aged guy who's tech..."competent" not tech "savvy". To be honest the fact you're middle aged and running an iphone speaks to that. That's okay. There are kids 18 who would fly through the settings and be like "duh, that wasn't hard" and to them, it wasn't. Does that make this a bad product? I don't think so, I think it's just not for you. Some of the settings you were in I was facepalming a bit because I know if you were shown how it works you'd probably be like "Oh for crying out loud...that's it? That's what that does?" The Hobbywing is foolproof for the most part. Some people love that, others like things more complicated...or at least having the options to screw around.
    Not every product is for everyone. I don't own this thing, never heard of it until you talked about it actually but I might pick one up just to play, it looks neat. I've wasted $25 on worse things. LOL Wost case I'll use it in a rig for my 8 year old daughter to play with her older brothers.
    PS. You should look into some of the more complicated settings of your transmitter. They do a lot of the same things you see in the app with the same scales and axis' etc. You're missing out on a lot of adjustment.

      @CrawlerCanyon  6 месяцев назад

      There were times when I would have to power-cycle it a half dozen times just to get it to turn on. I definitely had a delay between startup tones and when the light on the receiver came on, so I think you just got the next worse stage of that.
      You could always run an external BEC, which would cost more than you paid for the ESC70. 😏
