I just ordered one for my 2023 Subaru Ascent. They make an AE version (low clearance), since the Ascent hitch receiver is really high and the standard Trail Swing would block the gate from opening even when swung out.
I wanted something that could be locked into place, because I plan on using it with the FrontRunner table (which I also ordered from DirtCom), so it needs to swing out and lock into place.
Anyway, I love the product design and the passion from the people at the company. I made 3 calls to them so far and every time I spoke with someone knowledgeable and willing to take time to listen to my questions and get actual answers. Customer service so far has been way over the top.
Hopefully it's a good long-term product! Definitely expensive, but I wanted the best and most useful, since my Wife will need to swing out the hitch to get into the trunk. I wanted it to be as easy as possible. I ALMOST went with the Wilco brand, but saw too many reviews talking about a sticky pin. I like the Rigd and Dirtcom latch design much better.

I purchased the RigD for the Gladiator. Pro’s : Very tough and best locking design and no wobble. Con’s : 1.Wrong bolt size for wheel locks; 12MM instead of 14MM. Thus my new locking nuts do not work. 2. Say bye to your backup camera and sensors. I bought a wireless backup camera no where as good as the stock. 3. As you mentioned, it did not take into consideration optimizing departure clearance. I think waiting for some improvements would be worthwhile considering the cost.

I’ve kept my spare on the roof, but in my cargo carrier. All too often do I see people with the spare tire up on the roof in either a cargo basket or roof platform system. On a recent trip my friend in a 2018 Subaru Outback 2.5 and I, both filled up at the same time before driving up the highway another 120 miles to the ski resort. After snow camping and driving back down the mountain to the same gas station. I filled up on 11.5 gallons and he filled up on 10.0 gallons. His only mods are: 2 inch lift Cooper discoveries, a front runner rack and a spare tire on the roof. I have cut bumpers, More aggressive A/T’s, a 3.5 inch lift and about 1000 lbs more on my vehicle, I have a V6 vs. his H4. But instead of a spare tire on the roof I have an aero dynamic cargo carrier. OH! And I had this tire carrier connected to my rear hitch, I was testing it out!! Man 11.5 gallons filled vs. 10.0 gallons filled, that’s freakin crazy! We all have different preferences, but I think cargo carriers look much cleaner than the tire in the basket. It’s lockable too! Increase range and save money 😃, and look cool 😎

@@BorderlineExplorer on a trip to Mt. Shasta over a year ago, I recorded some data. So, between Leo’s Outback with just the Tire on top with the front runner rack and A/T tires, he got 15% better MPG than my vehicle. Check out the Data below:
      Reference vehicle: stock 2019 Forester
      Mods: only A/T tires
      My 2019 Honda Passport
Mods: roof cargo carrier, rear hitch cargo basket, cut bumpers, 2 inch lift, mild A/T
      44% less MPGs!
      Jeep Wrangler JL Sport
      Mods: bare roof, 37” M/T, 3.5” lift
      82% less MPGs!
      5th Gen 4runner SR5
Mods: Tepui soft shell RTT, lift, A/T’s,
      102% less MPGs!
The tire on top causes a ton of wind drag.
      44% vs. 15%
**edit, I also need to add that I now have a 3.5” lift kit, an 80 lb. awning on my roof, and a more aggressive A/T tire. The older version of my vehicle may have matched the MPG’s of the 4 cylinder Outback. I also need to add that MPG’s on my 2015 Forester XT went from 27 hwy at 80mph to 19 mpg from just putting a cargo basket on the roof. I immediately took it down. That was just bare roof basket too.
