My 1978 Datsun mini truck had a similar spare tire carrier system. I had a hex nut welded to the end of the 3-piece bar so I could use a ratchet to lower or raise the spare tire. Today a battery powered tool instead of a ratchet may be used. Surprised you did not do something similar. Great video and loved the ending. Thanks for sharing.
Good to know a 37 will just fit. I’m on 37 inch Ridge Grapplers on my Gladiator. I have a 35 inch Ridge Grappler under the jeep as a spare. I will simply use the spare on my right front axle in 2WD to get off a trail and easily still be able to drive down the highway at 65 mph until I get a new 37 inch tire. The FAD system on the front axle will also allow the slightly smaller wheel to spin freely with no differential issues. This video is the best demonstration that a 37 will fit under a gladiator. Keep up the excellent content.
I was just watching some of your old JK experience videos and thinking, I sure miss these epic short movies. About 30 seconds later, I thought I bet that was a lot of work. Today, I think your current content is plenty enough for me lol It's nice that you guys are still doing this channel after all these years.
We really appreciate you saying as much. As much as we enjoyed making videos from trips like the JKX, they cost a lot of money to attend and took a tremendous amount of time and work to produce. Now that everyone and their mother make RUclips videos, there's just not enough return on investment to keep doing it. We hope you can be understanding of that.
@wayalife Of course, and thank you for the time and effort of producing those gems. Perhaps you can teach these one hundred or so channels how to make a professional video. For a small fee lol
I have a 37” BFG KM3 aired up under my gladiator without any modifications. I used this tire specifically because it fits. run 38” Nitto Ridge Grapplers on rhe truck.
@@wayalife I know! Thats why I chose that specific tire. I mentioned i use this specific tire so some one can use the 37” BFG as a spare and not need to make any changes
Another fantastic video! Did you remove the heatshield from the driver side, no issues I assume with it getting hot from the muffler? I had to bend mine a bit and lowered my psi to like 10 for it fit. I have the Metal Cloak track bar. Also how do you keep your jeeps so clean, all your videos your jeeps are spotless, it looks like you never drive them but Im sure you do😛
Glad to hear you were able to make it work. I thought going down to zero might help just squeak it in but then, I didn't like the idea of it 'just' fitting and don't want to have to deal with airing up a tire to replace a flat tire.
If anyone is curious I have a 38 inch ridge grappler that fits underneath, running the same track bar and I ground down the hitch reciever just barely before flush to the weld on the backside receiver, it’s a pain getting it in and out and it hangs so low, that for any serious wheeling it goes in the bed. Also something to note if your running real beadlocks and have a matching spare be aware that water will pool up into the bolt holes when it rains or during winter so it can corrode and seize the bolts on the ring if you don’t use anti seize.
@@in435 Yeah the 38 inch ridge grappler is a great tire! Super stoked I was able to get mine to fit underneath. It looks like I might’ve trimmed the heat shield a little bit on the side that’s to the front of the vehicle, since the radius of the shield was too small for the 38. Hopefully if that makes sense, but it’s hard to tell it’s been a few years since I did it… I know some people have removed the heat shield completely and I haven’t heard of any issues with the heat from the exhaust but I’ve never personally done it so can’t say you’d be good with confidence. Let me know if you have any more questions!
@@FeleniousGru Yes, it does make sense, thanks! The 38 is great but not always in stock so I placed an order and just playing a waiting game. I have an on board air compressor so I’ll probably air it down as well.
Great vid. I knew about these, but it was nice to see one in action. Have you ever driven the gladiator without the rear track bar? does it wobble like a drunken sailor?
A track bar is essential to keep your axle in place. Without it, your axle will be all over the place and yes, I have broken one on the trail and it required a repair to continue on.
what's up man love your videos my jeep's lease is about to end the one thing that's holding me back from getting another wrangler is the way the jeep handles on the freeway do you recommend a mod that will make the jeep feel more grounded in high speeds
I would need to know a lot more about your Jeep. How much lift does it have if any? What kind of tires are you running and how much air do you run them at?
Well, assuming you keep it stock, it should drive fine at highway speeds. Maybe not like a BMW with rack and pinion steering but as steady as a solid front axle with a steering box and links can be. Running a more reasonable tire pressure like 30-32 vs the 35-40 that normally comes in them will help too.
@@wayalife I have 37x13.50 nitto mud grapplers and the Accuair lift. Wanting to tuck the 5th in spare location, do you think the Clayton track bar will contact anything at full drop?
That's why I specifically stated what 37 we're running. Just because it says 37 on the sidewall doesn't mean it's actually 37" in size and no 2 tires made by different manufacturers measure the same. Nitto typically make tires that sit on the big size and closer to what is advertised.
@camaroboi13 No tire measures what is stated on the sidewall and while your 37" Toyo's fit fine, that doesn't mean a 38" Nitto Ridge Grappler will. As I show in the video, my 37" Nitto Trail Grappler did not.
Considering that it measures 37.7" and the 37" Trail Grappler you see in this video measures 36.5" and it just barely squeezes up between the frame rails, I somehow doubt it.
@@camaroboi13 To each their own. Me, I find that I get by okay with 4.10 but never really see 8th gear anymore. From personal experience testing out 37's with 4.10, 4.88 and 5.13, I personally would say that 4.88 brings you back to stock performance best.
@@Jacob-bf5zu As mentioned, with 37's, 4.88 will bring you back to stock performance. 5.13 will give you more power but it will also have you run on the high side of RPM at highway speeds. 5.13 is a much better fit for 38's.
Oh just great, Eddie is back to showing off. how to carry 37 inch spare this time. On a serious note, have you had any issues offroading and dropping off a ledge subsequently hitting your spare?
LOL - as of yet, I have not had any issues but then, I've only wheeled totally stock on easier stuff and only recently installed this 37. It's a legit concern but I hope to mitigate it by being aware of it. Same as I do with the oil pan 😎
