This is one of those songs that sinks in deeper and deeper each time I listen. If you let it, it will almost penetrate into your very soul. The Seekers are one of the few musical groups I know of that can write and perform music this well. I just can't hear enough of their excellent music. They are in a class all of their own. May they be enjoyed and appreciated by future generations, too.
Jerome Wysocki They sang this song at their 50th anniversary tour concert which I had the privilege to attend in London. They sang it with a film of them in the background from the 60's singing the same song. Absolutely wonderful and emotional. The best concert I've ever been to.
kevin heming , how fortunately indeed you folks were to be there at the concert. Here in the USA we haven't seen them in a concert since 1966. We never got another opportunity again. Had they been able to do concerts here in the USA, their popularity could have been even larger that it currently is. At least we can see and hear them on RUclips. I wish we could convince them to do at least a one night concert here in the USA.
Recently, I went back and listened to early Seekers recordings. Some of the time, music is not as great as perhaps you remember it being. The Seekers' music absolutely resonated. It is an absolute joy to listen to. It is ten times better than I had remembered it, probably because during the 60's I was too young to really appreciate it. Judith's voice is the greatest I will hear this side of heaven.
The wonderful group of my youth, that entered my life with that "when the stars begin to fall", a melody that still inspires deeply....(I am 72, now...) A warm CIAO from Rome, my dear friends!
This is a moving and timeless melody, and I greatly enjoy this harmonic treatment. We sang it as our closing hymn today with "The Gift of Love" lyrics. Thank you for uploading -- I still really like Mary Travers' solo version, but this is even better.
I think people forget that singing groups get weary after years and years of performing and being on the road. Even the Beatles said when they split up, "We just want to live our lives." Can't blame Judith for wanting a change, she had a LOT more going for her than the guys. They were popular because of her voice although I loved their voices - they were perfect for the type of music we loved back then. God bless them all.
My experience in life, is that that this song is not true. I love my wife after 45 years. My love has not grown old, it has matured. Her hair is still long and beautiful. I am privileged. Alleluia.
If Judith would have sung this, it would have been another lullaby hit for them. So love her voice in Morningtime Ride. My husband sings it to me all the time.
Since you seem incapable of using a search engine ... "The Water Is Wide" (also called "O Waly, Waly") is a folk song of English origin, based on lyrics which partly date to the 1600s. Cecil Sharp published the song in Folk Songs From Somerset (1906). It is related to Child Ballad 204.
Seek, & we all find, such, nutrients, for our soul, if any today, that ruining Mother Nature, by over-consumerism. Missing & mourning Bro Kunert Vincent. 尋覓一葉鮓艋輕舟,載走無盡傷感離愁。
@seekersarchive I asked Graham Simpson if there was any chance Judith could record it now and he thought that would never happen. But he also said she had performed it as lead singer at a concert in their reunion years.
Actually Athol was usually the most dominant member of the group. but the guys often agreed with one another and outvoted Judith. In this case I think she simply respected Bruce's wish due to his love of the song and long standing wish to record it.
Hello Seekers... Great version of a song also performed by Bob Dylan (The Bootleg Series Vol. 5), part of The Bob Dylan Project. Contact us for details.
No, they recorded it during her time there, but Bruce recorded this song because it was an old favorite of his and that's what he really, really wanted to do, so the rest of the group went along. The boys did do many things over the years with other female lead singers post 1968. Judith was not interested in reforming the group. If you can find a copy of her biography "Colours of My Life" you can learn more. I found a copy on Alibris, and you can find copies on Amazon but they are way overpriced
They are all amazing people but there were tensions between them which became misunderstandings and estrangements, unfortunately. Happily it seems those were patched up years ago.
I think at the time she wasn't always confident they had her best interests at heart, especially given that she had aspirations for a solo jazz career since the beginning. There were a number of differences of opinion artistically, personally, and business-wise that got in the way of their group cohesion and led to her decision to leave, besides her existing aspiration to be a solo jazz singer.
Ok...I enjoyed this group's recordings while attending High School in the 60's....I like Dusty's version better....perhaps cause she was a beautiful recording artist...she had a perfect wonderful voice..
Is this the same tune used for the modern Catholic hymn "An Upper Room"?? (I've only heard the first minute and a half and I knew something was familiar. This is my first time hearing "The Water is Wide" that I can recall.)
I think Judith would have been much better for this song as well, but I do wish the guys had taken turns on solo more often with different songs. The reason Bruce did this one is because he loved the song so much. But I think it would have made a lot of sense for Bruce and Judith to trade verses or something.
then do you mean that the boys recorded this sometime after the group's breakup in 1968? any historical information you can provide would be appreciated.
In these times songs like this are soul soothing and refreshing.
This is what you call folk music, so beautiful the best folk group ever, such a talented group, keep showing these please.
This song fills me with tears it is so beautiful

Amen to that, Jerome!

Indeed! They got a 5 minute standing ovation BEFORE the concert began! That says it all.

Yep
I'm glad that I was born into a world with music like this. 🌞

Her voice still dominates the chorus, ringing out like a bell

Mottledbrain: I was curious about yr question. It does sound like the same tune. Beautiful song.
Brilliant
If Judith would have sung this, it would have been another lullaby hit for them. So love her voice in Morningtime Ride. My husband sings it to me all the time.

So sorry
@@dawnjohnson3263 No apology is needed. BV my former supervisor, is great, so inspirational.
Her roots are very much Irish if you care to look through her ancestry ( Sheehan) but also of course , Judith's still Aussie through and through .
Who else can sing like the Irish!
@seekersarchive I asked Graham Simpson if there was any chance Judith could record it now and he thought that would never happen. But he also said she had performed it as lead singer at a concert in their reunion years.
If there is a heaven...can I please be there with the musicians and the border collies 😊
Actually Athol was usually the most dominant member of the group. but the guys often agreed with one another and outvoted Judith. In this case I think she simply respected Bruce's wish due to his love of the song and long standing wish to record it.
janice2274 Judith is Australian. Melbournian.

In Norway Rita Eriksen has made this very popular. Timeless.

judy's father won a DFC in WW2.
Judith Durham was not Irish, she was born in Australia.
our sister Dusty Springfield recorded this song.......
so did pete seeker

I agree.
Peter Paul and Mary did all
the time what you prefered.
I love both.
then do you mean that the boys recorded this sometime after the group's breakup in 1968? any historical information you can provide would be appreciated.
il jingle della robiola osella! O_O
I love Karla Bonoff's version best, but it's a beautiful song by anyone.
Isn't this based on the Irish folk song Carrickfergus?
no, carrickfergus is younger. this is an english rework of of an old scots sang called waly waly.
not bad,but bruce you really should have let judith loose on thjs one, that would have been AMAZING.
How much better this song would have sounded with Judith singing lead. She has such a distinctive sound as compared to this rather ho hum version.
Agreed 100%. Where were you Judith?
I think Bruce Woodley does a terrific job of interpreting this song. Sure, Judith has an incredible voice, but Bruce nails this.
Is Judith Durham originally Irish, having such a lovely and strong voice?
Who wrote this song? Composer info is too often missing here and elsewhere...
Would have been better if Judith sung it. Still good though.
Can't hear her voice in this song - at all!
lol you don't have to Irish to be a good singer. Scottish is also fine
The great Celtic bards
