This is amazing, love Barry Dransfield. Check out Steeleye Span's version on "Time", Gay Woods' voice and Peter Knight's violin are a delight. I didn't know so many people appreciated Barry Dransfield! Thanks for posting this!
I love Barry Dransfield's traditional English folk style. This version in of this song in particular makes me think of off duty sailors sitting and listening to the ships fiddler playing a mournful but soothing song about a girl that got away on a warm moonlit night.
The water is wide, I cannot get o'er Nor yet have I the wings to fly; Give me a boat that will carry two And both shall row my love and I. Down in the meadows the other day A-gathering flowers both fine and gay, A-gathering flowers both red and blue I little thought what love can do. I put my hand into one soft bush, Thinking the sweetest flower to find; I pricked my finger to the bone And left the sweetest flower alone. I leaned my back against an oak, Thinking it was a trusty tree; But first it bended and then it broke And so did my false love to me. There's a ship and it sails the sea It's loaded deep as deep can be, But not so deep as the love I'm in; I know not if I sink or swim. Oh, love is handsome and love is fine And love is charming when first it's new. But as it grows old it waxes cold Then fades away like the morning dew.
I wanna win the lottery, go to tahiti lay on a beach chair with a drink in my hand looking out to the horizon and pay a musician to sing this song over and over again
The water is wide, I cannot get o'er Nor yet have I the wings to fly; Give me a boat that will carry two And both shall row, my love and I. Down in the meadow the other day A-gathering flowers both bright and gay, Gathering flowers both red and blue I little thought what love could do. I put my hand in some soft bush, Thinking the fairest flower to find; But I pricked my finger to the bone And left the fairest flower behind. I leaned my back against an oak, Thinking he was a trusty tree; But first he bent and then he broke And so did my false true love to me. The water is wide, I cannot get o'er Nor yet have I the wings to fly; Give me a boat that will carry two And both shall row, my love and I.
When he said sweetest you wrote fairest regarding the flower also i noticed a slight difference between what he said and what you wrote which one is the more precise?
Traditionally there have always been various lyrical versions of this song, to say there is a definitive version of it would in my opinion cause something of the charm of it to be lost.
Wunderschön!!!
"Charming tune".
"And a fine musician.
We're lucky to have him".
"Yes. He is not there by chance, Mr. Nelson".
I've said it before and I'll say it again; best living folk singer from these shores.

After years, i can't hear other versions of this song. THIS version made by Barry Dransfield is the only one for me, so inspired and blunt.

By God, I’ll drink to that!
