Completely agree with your hot take on Hurley, he isn't very funny. But what he is is an extremely positive, endearing, and kind presence. So that every time he appears onscreen, I think many people - including myself - feel warmer and happier, and that things are going to be safer and calmer with the characters and story with him around. In that, his character goes way beyond simple comic relief, and to becoming a much deeper kind of relief for the audience. And that is the beautiful way Hurley is acted and written.
The attitude of ‘the fat guy is the comedic relief’ is a holdover from late 20th century media. I really resented all the comedy being foisted on Hurley this watch thru. So glad he got a lot more to do later on because he wasn’t always funny but he was always the one who picked people up, dusted them off, and said ‘let’s build a golf course’
It’s my absolute pleasure! I enjoy doing this work very much, so it gives me great satisfaction to know that LOST fans are engaging with and enjoying it. 🙏
I actually like the orange peel smile it serves his character well with optimism and hope. Afterall he is the self-described "man of faith." When everyone around him is sad and crying, he tries to cheer them up. Never saw any mean malicious intent behind it. Just hope that things will get better and they're lucky to be alive.
In the first episode it appears creepy but in the final flash it retroactively looks wholesome which is a fun spin. However not sure about John being an optimistic nice person? He’s basically a sociopath.
12:11 Personally, I absolutely LOVE the iconic orange peel smile scene, and I find it extremely cool that the writers decided to include it in Locke's flash-sideways "awakening" moment! The scene is bizarre, extravagant, comical, intriguing and memorable all at the same time (honestly, it comes close to the epic "Walt...do you want to know a secret?" scene for me). It perfectly captures how Locke's perception of what was happening to the castaways completely differed from the rest of the group right from the start. And let's say it: Locke is rather an ambivalent, multi-faceted and perhaps even paradoxical character, which is quite well expressed in his one-of-a-kind smile pointed at a confused Kate haha :).
I love that scene too! I love that from our perspective in the pilot, it's creepy, but it completely changes after Walkabout, and you realize he was just exuberant, experiencing small joys in the light of his miracle, maybe kind of punch drunk from the experience. His joy is only disturbing when contrasted with everyone else's trauma, and the question of why he's acting differently.

My little brother hated Lost, bur even he will say WE HAVE TO GO BACK!!! Every now and then
Hurley is the heart of the show, not just comic relief.

This is going to be fantastic!
this is going to be great! looking forward to next one :)
i am excited 🎉 journey begin...😊
