  • Hitman 3's Freelancer Mode shakes up the Hitman formula, get people to play in different ways. It also has four key flaws as to why it feels repetitive and demotivating to play.

EDIT: At 10:54, What was lost in translation here was that I mean that mastery levels got harder to earn, not that XP is harder to earn, hence the comparison I made to Battle Pass levels in Paladins and Fall Guys (which are static, not Dynamic as it is in Hitman) - I did try and fix this in the timestamps. I didn’t notice all this until I uploaded it to RUclips, and by that point it was too late, and I wasn’t going to be waiting another hour and a half to upload and re-render it.

Level 80 is about where I tapped out and became more of an occasional player. The problem then arises that once you get out of practice, you then die easier, lose all your stuff, then quit faster out of frustration. I also don't like how there now seems to be triple the enforcers for every disguise.

The biggest problem I have is losing all your equipment on a failed mission. I mean even at your safe house? That really blew my mind. It really is so dumb to me. Yet I keep playing 😅

True, i guess it' something between rookies as us, and experts like Dribble..... they have to find a middle-road. Really have troubles with dying in freelancer............maybe that's the fun.............. maybe it's death..... who knows

    • @Dribbleondo
      @Dribbleondo  24 дня назад +2

That's a very good way of putting it yeah. In game balance, you find a middleground. Too casual and the mode is not pleasing for hardcore fans, or even experienced fans like myself. Too competitive or speedrun focused, and then you have the problem of the game being punishing, unrewarding or just off-putting. Freelancer is fun to play, but it gets tiring very quickly in my opinion.

  • @mattishidayeo
    @mattishidayeo 2 месяца назад +4

Never played Freelancer, but probably won't ever just by looking at its premise (and more).
    1. Randomized targets isn't inherently new. Contracts Mode basically does that too and you can trust that those that make featured/trending would usually be good experiences.
    2. Same with identifying the syndicate leader. It is fresh and interesting the first few times, but yeah it becomes routine.
    3. When you are asked to repeat 1 and 2 multiple times, the novelty wears off very quickly.
I would very much rather a new map, or new levels like the Bonus Missions and Patient Zero campaigns from 2016 (Not the Special Assignments in HITMAN II or the 7 Deadly Sins package in HITMAN III).

It's kind of interesting people always dismiss 7DS, yet never the deluxe escalations, despite being worse imo. I liked 7DS, as it made escalations more like game modes, and are quite fun in their own right. I feel like 7DS constantly being excluded, including here, is unjustified.

    • @mattishidayeo
      @mattishidayeo Месяц назад

@@Dribbleondo to be fair the only reason why I even mentioned 7DS was because I view them, at least content wise, as the best that escalations offer so far. Kind of like a "if I don't want a new PZ style campaign to be like 7DS, why would I accept it being something like a deluxe escalation"

Very nice video - well made and accurate on many player concerns for the mode. I'm at Prestige 7 and personally the increases should have been more apparent from the beginning at Prestige 1. Gaining 500, 450, 400, 350 and finally 300 merces on top of Prestige Objectives is too little in my opinion and the bonuses should be applied to Payout Objectives too because that would really lessen the grind and actually incentivise the Prestige mode itself as a way for players to permanently increase their likelihood to accumulate many Merces. It's not a perfect solution but I think for what they intend, it is a better one than what they have given us now.
Secondly, this game-mode would greatly benefit from a difficulty setting where you can restart and dying will not fail the campaign and lose potential hours of work due to one small mistake - to name a few examples. It would help give those who can't play for long or newer players who struggle with the game and make them feel more welcome to playing the mode as well as increasing accessibility.
Let's see what happens in their August patch - I just really wish they'd communicate more and actually comment on whether they've seen player feedback regarding what they've done in Freelancer since launching the gamemode.

definitely agree with flaw 3. i recently beat a normal campaign just to spend all my merces, and i'm pretty sure i only got 2 mastery levels (level 53).
especially considering that a campaign can take 2+ hours to casually complete, that is a VERY small reward for the time spent. i can't even imagine how slow it would be past level 90, where the exp curve is at full effect.
not to mention that i don't have deluxe or any of the other freelancer DLCs, so a good portion of the mastery levels are just meaningless to me

See that's the thing I'm failing to understand as a player lvl 1880 mastery 100 freelancer, this mode doesn't seem to be working for long time veteran ones nor newer players that are struggling. So who is this mode for exactly? Don't get me wrong I largely enjoyed my time with freelancer but there are a number of fixes (bug fixes) or QoL that they can do. Dribble summed it up well

Oh hey, that's a name I've seen before. I didn't expect to see a modder on my youtube home feed today
Very nice video, the quality surprised me. The occasional stopmotion/claymation style scenes are a really nice touch.
I think you're main points are all correct, although part of me wants to disagree with "the mastery level should be static instead of dynamic".
I think I prefer the dynamic system because it gives more importance to reaching a higher level. I don't want the leveling up from 99 to 100 to feel like/take the same amount of effort of 0 to 1.
That said, there should be a cap limit to how much the required XP should be to level up.
This would work by either getting the first 10 mastery levels in one mission because you've done all the objectives and the XP required is extremely low, but the higher levels would take more missions
    OR
You still need a few missions to reach mastery 10, but after a certain level (say mastery 50, since I see it's easy to reach levels between 60 and 70) the XP required gets capped out at... I don't know, 30k XP?
I'm currently at the final stretch for Mastery 100, and even while doing perfect runs it still takes _forever_ to level up.
And this brings me to the hopes I had for the Prestige system.
On paper, the Prestige system is actually great. You essentially start from 0, excluding the mastery, but your leveling up and recovery would be easier since you get more money and XP.
But in execution, the problem comes in two places: dedicated Hitman players and the gain bonus.
With dedicated Hitman players I refer to those who had already reached Mastery 100 (or close to it I guess), had a ton of Merces because they didn't need to spend them anymore, and completionists. RUclipsrs who show the game, which need to do pretty much everything in order to show everyone else in advance.
I'd imagine it's heart-wrenching to lose EVERYTHING for what is at that point essentially an achievement.
Resetting *ten times* (which btw I found like a low blow on IOI's part. They said it would have been 5 levels but it actually requires 10 resets) in order to complete the game.
In regards to the gain amount of XP and merces, I felt it to be barely noticeable.
This may just be me, but it doesn't feel worth it to go through the trouble of filling up the gun wall, which in and of itself isn't easy since the suppliers *don't always sell you things* even if you are still missing weapons. I'm missing a couple of pistols at the moment, and the suppliers sometimes greet me with an empty shop. The only thing I have to do is complete *an entire campaign* in order to get _one_ weapon from Diana.
Do I even need to mention the nerf of merces from the NY Vault, or the removal of guns from maps?
And that's just the gun wall problem.
Also quick side note, the rarity system.
Is it just me or it doesn't super duper make sense?
Like sure, ICA19 silverballers should be legendary, krugermeier epic and whatnot... but the "rarity" is only noticeable in cost and objective requirement.
I have come across more legendaries than rare weapons... How? I'd expect the opposite to happen.
    Regardless
Even at max level, I find it hard to advance Mastery. Buying weapons isn't as much of an issue. I don't think you still get enough merces but the rate at which you can get weapons is the bigger problem.
You mentioned you can only level up 5 times in the video, which is true. But from my gameplay there's the possibility to still level up beyond Prestige 10.
I don't know why they made it so, my best guess is an oversight from the devs. I've reached Prestige 100 (I made a video on my channel if you're interested), and there's (quite expectedly) no bonus gain after 10.
Point is, the Prestige system asks too much and gives too little. At least I haven't felt a good enough boost.
This gets added on top of how easy it is to fail an objective or die in a mission due to unpredicted circumstances.
NPCs occasionally seeing through walls, conflicting objectives (kill only targets + eliminate guards, for example), the unfixed viewcones in Haven, Colorado being extremely difficult to deal with in any kind of SA or generally difficult to navigate due to practically every spot being a 5v1 gunfight...
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Freelancer. The Safehouse, the new playstyle, the concept of random or unknown targets...
It feels like a nice continuation to the universe after 47 is done with his story and is now choosing where to go himself.
But unfortunately instead of being a "high risk high reward" scenario it's a "high risk low reward", which is what makes it tiring to deal with.
I think we get... 5 suits from it? Which are the only thing that can be brought from Freelancer to the main gameplay.
For 100 mastery levels, I would have personally liked to see more stuff that's globally unlockable.
Whether it is the assassin's pistol, certain exits (I'm pretty sure some are only available in Freelancer), adding suspect options to contracts (aka whoever plays the contract needs to identify the target like in a Showdown), adding assassins or lookouts to contracts, adding "gain [X] amount of merces" as an objective in contracts, the option to have the vault lasers disabled in contracts...
Things like that. The ability to unlock and use Freelancer features in other parts of the game would have been nice.
Freelancer is an absolutely great gamemode, and the fact that it's free instead of being a paid DLC is amazing. But it doesn't feel refined or complete.
I hope these months can be treated as a huge amount of playtesting in IOI's view, and I hope they don't drop the game entirely before many obvious and major changes need applying.
Freelancer has a ton of potential. We're just not fully there yet.
Sorry for the long comment lol
    Once again, great video

    • @Dribbleondo
      @Dribbleondo  Год назад +1

Thank you for the paragraph. A truly fascinating read, and a lot of things I agree with here.
While i'm not against a dynamic mastery levels system, it has to feel fair, which it currently doesn't. As I tried to get across in the video, I just felt like I was staying in one place, which is not a great sign of success.
The NY Bank nerf did need to happen, even i'll admit it was bad for the games' economy, so the way they've done it incurs a lot more risk and the reward is more reasonable (one contracts' worth of Merces instead of two).
I've used the stop-motion style interludes a few times now on a few other videos, and I plan on doing more =)
Really curious to know what modding scene you know me from? (Like the beach boys, I get around in that sort of area)

My main issue is it doesn’t seem like the targets were actually assigned targets, the game just chooses an NPC at random. The main game targets are targets so you can isolate them and kill them, here an npc can spend their whole time in a very crowded area, making the mission impossible.

Absolutely. Your objectives are Melee kill, Collateral Explosion kill, no firearms, your Prestige options are SA/SO, Timer challenge, or Epic SMG kill, and the target is some guy who never leaves the bar of the Himopan Hotel. The payout, 500 merces to just kill him and not die escaping.

I agree 100%. The thing that is most bothersome to me is the repetitiveness of the game you mentioned. I killed that dock table worker on Santa Fortuna back to back from one tier of a campaign to the next where I told the map again. I started feeling the same way at around the same level. The grind to continue to level 100 was exhausting and borderline emotional.

Lowkey you wanna know what I think would of worked better for failing or dieing on a campaign. I say you loose all your items that you took but you get to decide to either pay a fee which is the default half mercers and freelancer tools or you get to defend the safe house against guards with like automatic rifles and whatnot and if you fail that you loose all of your mercers and all rack weapons but if you defend the safe house you only loose the items you took on the mission and still have to restart.

I think one way to mitigate the boredom of freelancer is to incorporate new targets/locations. Like I wish they would include Morocco and Sapienza at night and their layouts. From what I understood when the franchise got rebooted I was under this impression that the hitman games were to be constantly adding new locations and targets. I just wish I/O could turn this more into a live-service game and really push the limits. As for freelancer, I wish they could include what you said in here. Hell, I wish they would just re-release old hitman levels from previous entries into the new reboot and just label them as "flashback episodes". Since you know, this man regained his memories and stuff.

honestly I wish you could find a way to get more uses out of merces + weapon collecting without it being a chore
you have a computer in the armory, so you could theoretically source what you want at base price, with there being special discounts from time to time
during missions suppliers could charge more for gear if it's a last minute pick-up, but they could also reduce it if you assassinate a side-target or retrieve contents from a safe
at the very least it'd give an incentive to grinding out merces & getting gear without it being as much of a slog

I think i see your point and as a player who has 2 accounts and played up to prestige 7 and 17 on the other i feel that rinse and repeat on the maps tideous - i can almost forsee the possible targets just by my experience and that's ok - i most of the time avoid SA prestige items but after prestige 7 i guess you get 7000 mercs for SA and SA/SO grants you 8500 mercs - thats very good in compare when you start the first time freelancer and get only 3000 mercs for SA !!! MAP knowledge is very much needed to get weapons for your shelves at home to reset and increase Prestige so SA objectives make actually sense to do so - the game has challenges where you have to finish at least ONE full campaign on HardCore and if you never played Story mode on professional (which is not incouraged anymore sadly i remember challenges SA SO sniper on every difficullty but thats patched out?!) you know what you face in Freelancer HardCore - as every guard can headshot you in 3 shots - never to mention Sashka cocain guards that pop you in 2 bursts ... if you go on rampage mode in HardCore than be aware to hit and run/hide and bloody kills ruin disguises :) but thats ok for me!

I really don't see the appeal of freelancer. I look at this game as a puzzle too and in freelancer the pieces to the puzzle are either broken or missing. Go to berlin to get the sniper rifle for an objective in another mission? Its removed from the map. Go to Dubai so you can get a suppressed pistol to complete another objective down the line? They've all been replaced with regular ones. I guess I just misunderstood what this mode is supposed to be but what's the fun playing this when its literally impossible to get the tools you need to complete objectives? This mode feels like a silly RNG arcade mode except when you fail it gives you every reason to stop playing because the initial struggle for gear is only fun and interesting once. Honestly don't know wtf the devs were thinking when they made this. It feels like you're constantly at the mercy of RNG from your spawn location, to what useful items have been wiped off the map. I have over 1300 hours combined across the 3 games and all my map knowledge and understanding of the game mechanics went completely out the window in this mode.
TLDR: Freelancer mode takes away everything that makes this game what it is.

A couple things that made me stop playing:
    1. you cannot buy things unless your in a mission, so if you find a bunch of things you want, you have to kinda pick only one thing at a time. Also they can be in hard to reach places in some levels risking your money before you even get the chance to shop.
    2. once you have all the tools, going to one of the store people losses its meaning, they only have weapons at that point and its just odd.
    3. you still, STILL cannot get all of the tools the coin for the tools is STILL glitched and impossible to get it felt so lame trying so hard finally running through a whole campaign finding ALL the tools and filling those three cases as i went to get to the last item and find out you cannot get it.
    4. there is no way to reroll your bonus objectives sometimes i get "Kill someone with a gun" or "poison someone with dart gun" as an optional obj, and silent assassin the highest payout bonus and its SA -NO GUNS- Dx
    5. and speaking of that, your point about silent assassin is good, but they put it in there as a bonus obj and make it the highest payout bonus too, kinda making the whole thing moot, yes play loud, unless you want that big payout, i got SA on one mission and the guy i had to kill had NO pathing, was sat on a bench in front of two non moving door guards, on one of the main game vip routes which was basically impossible to complete i gave up on it so quickly it was disheartening to not even be able to try for it because of something out of my control.

There's always a way, it may not be easy, but there's always a way to get SA. I've gotten every single one I've done. I don't except failure though, I just close the game and re open it and start over until I stop screwing up. Sometimes the solutions take some deep thinking but there's always tricks.
For your situation you described two guards in front of your target on a bench? Could have placed guns on the ground so the guards pick them up giving you a window to your target. Or put an emetic mine in a briefcase, walk up to him and trigger it. Easy peasy.

Having prestige objectives that contradict pre-set objectives. Suppliers selling screw drivers for 1000 when you can find 2 or 3 if you move around. What if you have 5 of them? Still lose them all! Frustrating. I found out its worth it to build the house. Now i can get a free banana, go fishing, and sip wine...however i was very frustrated in the start so i didnt bother hanging pictures, now the prompt to select posters is gone and I can't find another way to select them. The repetitive hospital bed when failing missions, can we do without the formality overkill?! Im annoyed, but i cant stop playing it. This reminds me of how challenging it was back in the old original hitmans. I get pissed! But I noticed I'm learning more about the maps and new ways to do things since ive started freelancer. The random starting points in trespassing areas while having NO GEAR, not cool. But still makes things more fresh. I didnt even know mendoza has a sniper nest. I figured out a way to leave with the sniper rifle. First you need to get mr fords briefcase in the beginning. You will need it to smuggle out with the rifle. I cant stop playing.

Safe to say you nailed all the reasons why the game mode is not fun, the disapointment was really big hit and Hitman 3 was quite short game to play (fearing for your computer as the fans spin out of control) so the hope of getting new actual content in long time scope did not see even a sniper scope in the actual game time

i quit the freelancer mode after two failed missions, i wanted to have a perfect run but due to hitmans random shit sometimes happening, i failed two missions that i had technicly in the bag. And just to get punished by the game i thought to myself, "yeah this mode is dogshit". I dont have a problem doing some of the harder challenges from the Base game and i really liked the idea of a actual hitman based system where you get more equipment if you are succesfull. However, this quickly became just shitty, due to the randomness of the bonus mercy objectives. Sometimes, its very easy to do them and sometimes its just plain old bullshit. So, i think this game mode is trash. In every way really. Just thrown in there withouth much thought about balance. Nice idea, terrible execution

Very epic video, alot of these flaws only mildly effect me since I'm a different kind of gamer but for the avarage gamer it's different. Also I don't use Alt+F4 smh smh :bigbaby:

I personally love how punishing it is, but I get why other players don't like it. That being said, if IO does decide to change it, I hope they do it by adding a new easier mode. If they change the normal mode as-is, I'd lose a lot of interest in the game.

Do you speak English? Have you played freelancer mode or even Hitman 3 at all? Next time you don't understand something, how about going into some detail of what it is that is troubling you.

My biggest issues have to be losing half of your current Merces , & losing all your tools. Merces is easy but t takes to long to build up your tools when yu can lose them at any point , however I think yu would care less once yu complete the collector freelancer tools.

    • @Dribbleondo
      @Dribbleondo  Месяц назад

Part of the problem is that Collector Freelancer Tools are expensive, prohibitively so in early runs, and some of those tools are all-but-required to complete objectives, sometimes even the prestige objectives, so it comes off as punishing new players or people who struggle with the game mode. It's just an unneeded punishment that makes failure too painful to justify giving another run a go.

my solution to all this was modding. More specifically, rogueless freelancer and a normal cheat table for invisibility to the game's ai. That made wonders, really. The 30+ minute missions turned into 5 minute speedruns that gave me entire campaigns in the same time where I used to complete a few missions. And the addition of the "full targets" configuration in the mod lets you have 5 targets in every map, which increases significantly the number of syndicate members you get to kill (20 or so to 70 in a single campaign), in the case you are like me and want to complete every challenge in the game, including the not very hard one that states that you need to kill 2500 members and 500 leaders. without these mods, it would take me ages to complete these. and even though there are people out there with the will to spend another thousand hours in this game just to complete these, i'm not in the mood or have the time to invest so much in the game.
About the mastery level difficulty: the thing is they used the same mastery algorithm for normal missions, which have the top mastery level 20, so it usually took 40k-45k xp to get from 0 to 20, which was fine. The problem with increasing the xp gap between mastery levels takes us for the need of around 150k to get from level 90 to 91. If in an ordinary mission in which everything goes wrong and you kill 1 or 2 targets, you get 3k... and the maximum xp i ever got was 15k (as with the rogueless freelancer mod you get to raise the prestige levels faster)... you would need to play between 10 and 50 missions just to skip to the next mastery level. yikes.
with the mods and everything, right now i'm on mastery 97, have killed 905 members, 164 leaders and finished 37 campaigns. the xp I gained in freelancer, in total (only for comparison, Sapienza, one of the maps with the highest amount of replayability and challenges, gave me 77,180 xp in total so far) a mere amount of 3,535,250 xp. I could have all the mastery 20s for all the maps with this amount of xp. For you to have an idea, I was roughly on level 1000 when I started freelancer, now I'm on level 1695. It's wild. It's time consuming.
I don't usually use these facilitator mods and cheat tables in games in general, but for this one... I just can't play it the way they intended. I really don't want to trade my soul for this.

I honestly don't blame you. If the balance is that dire, then it's going to cause people to try and fix the issues themselves.
For the record, I use Rogueless Freelancer too, but only for the persistent tools.

    FREELANCER SUCKS. (Imo)
My experience: Spent about 8 hours in total get to to a final syndicate mission, (17 levels in total) out of literally no where a guard 2 floors down spots me and alerts the masses😡 100% bug/glitch. Suddenly, all 6 suspects start to escape.
I try my best and kill 4, but the leader escapes, and boom, a day of work is gone. In less than a minute. 🤬🤬🤬 I'm actually pretty good at this game. Global top 100 in a few of the challenges, but goddamn this mode is far too unforgiving. Take away all my collected poisons and whatnot but losing all campaign progress over a glitch is some cruel ass Nazi tactics.
Hitman is going on the shelf now. Waiting for the next one with 🤞that the developers over at IO put the bongs down and do better with Hitman 4.
What's sad is they (IO) even addressed all the complaints about Freelancer yet, acknowledging how frustrating it is, yet didn't changed anything, and pretty much said they like gamers having heart attacks when they lose hours of game play over a games flaws.

Freelancer is mid at best but mostly ass after lvl 30 & aft lvl 80 have wasting ur life to level up.
Its repetitive cheap & often cheats on hardcore mode. Im not the best but ive platinumed (or 100% i think 1 didn't give a plat) all 3 games & brainlessly can get through missions with ease never actually died in any of them until Freelancer hc. How u may ask? 1st time i was wall banged pro, 1 shot on the last level of the whole playthrough 😒
Door closed me killed target & booking it in a area without guards once i closed that door i should've been safe till i heard 1 shot & died.
2nd time after weeks away due to hax bs deaths, tried hc again for the suit. This time halfway through finals & in a brief gun fight which was unavoidable as the target was in a bs spot & barely moved & making them sick they had a bs garbage can next to them & countless eyes on them. So after blasting i crouched dipped around a corner got 3 ft around the wall bang bang bang, i hit the ground. Nothing was in front of or behind me so i take it they Wanted pro curved the bullets around the corner into my ass.
I deleted that game from my system so fast my console had to restart. I hate io now blood money was their last great game & despite them idiots saying they wanted to take what B.M was & build upon it & improve upon it they shit out the worst hitman game then 3 meh but pretty games that were basically all just 1 game 😒 Freelancer was their shot to do bloodmoney & they blew it again.
Lazy suits no shop no gun customization no buffs like bp vests better lockpick etc then to top it all off removing the electrocution phone for that they are a dead studio to me. Removing content i worked for is an immediate no no. Last i checked we payed for the game right? Who gaf how we play as long as we like it & return for the dlc & next games.
