  • Martin Ashworth is a Leather Craftsman who uses the skills and techniques of many different leather crafts.
Every challenge is different, from making saddles, restoring and repairing antique leather goods, to even fixing the leather straps on a German tourist's wooden leg.
This short film from Artisan Media shows the final part of the restoration process of a treasured barrister's briefcase.

It is an absolute pleasure to watch you work Martin. Any decent leather worker could repair old leather goods, but it takes a true artisan to identify, match and enhance the original character of the piece the way you do.
I really enjoyed the video production as well. Thanks.

I'm so glad that people like Mr. Martin are keeping alive old crafts! I hope there will be a revival for these arts. So much knowledge has been lost over the years about things that were common place for centuries.

I have spent many years refinishing wood furniture trying to keep the patina or worn look on antiques, but to see what you have done to leather I must bow down to you. I hope you have a son/daughter or apprentice to pass on your vast knowledge. You are truly a master at what you do. Too bad I am in the USA as I have many items from my great grandparents that I have don't know how to rework only as show pieces and you are able to take old and make it usable. WONDERFUL CRAFTSMAN!!!

Thank you so much for sharing these videos. The case looks absolutely beautiful. I'm about to tackle refurbishing a leather case for a 40-year-old electrical multimeter. Your wisdom has been an enormous help to me.

amazing to see that brief case from all worn down and barely hanging on to its stitching to brand new with a vintage look

THIS is the kind of skill pool that requires apprenticeship to keep it going. Marvellous refurbishment... :)

I like the mind set of where the polish on latches should go, even down the off side of the keyhole where the thumb would spill over when you open the case, well done, a proper job...!

Lovely to see a craftsman at work, sadly these skills will be lost in this throw away age if we are not careful.
One thing I was waiting for was how to restore old dry leather.....or did I miss it?

Thank you so much this is very helpful! I purchased a very old travel suitcase, wich I assume is from the 40's or even 30's. It is generally in quite a good condition, but it was very dirty. I cleaned it with a mild soap water, let it dry and applied some good leather fat/polish. There is a little corner that might need some re-stiching so I will do that as you've shown. Since I want to make a little display cabinet for Artworks out of it my biggest concern in the inside. It had a nice stiff canvas like lining, wich is sadly crumbling apart. Just the lid has a beautiful little pouch left wich is in good condition. I really don't want to ripp anything apart from the original suitcase, and I am now thinking about how I could just cover up the damaged lining. Do you have some advice on that? I would really appreciate it :)

How did you manage to remove the old rivets? Those old rivets are very tough and solid.

I would have preferred to see more information on the restoration and care of the leather and not the accouterments. These vids should be called how to re-stich leather and shine up the brassy bits
