This masterpiece wasn't made for stupid drag races, it was made to run fullspeed around corners on every terrain where no vw can keep up and that is important for safety, pefect balancing etc. But they are also both not original, I can't imagine the original lightweight Escort would lose against that golf, even if it got around 100hp more it is also ways heavier.

My S4 would blooter both those cars easily but I'd give both my kidneys to have that gorgeous cossie sitting outside my house. The Quattro/DSG makes any car like mine so quick off the mark but it has nowhere the feel and iconic drive like that whale-tailed blue wonder! Why did the settle for the Sierra rear lower swing arms when they decided to put the escort cosworth into production? This is the reason the cosworth rally car never really made much of an impression on the rally scene in the 90’s, shame, the whole project was rushed and only took 6 months from an idea to reality. Still my number one ford I would ever want though! Need to win the jackpot to own it now though.🤦🏼♂️

production Escort got what was essentially Sierra (Cosworth) EVERYTHING because they basically chopped the body off the floor of the Sierra and welded on an Escort mk5 body in its place. Group A stuff could be modified far more than Group N which was what the road going Sierra and Escorts were based on, although certain aspects (such as the bag for the water feed for the intercooler) had to be fitted to get homologation for Group A, as i understand it.

@@petelattimer6808just looked at one and it had a 1.9 efi engine. Also it was americanized so a little longer overall with more room, especially in back seats. All said and done I think they removed all the character compared to what we got over here. Not sure of the exact bhp numbers etc but I bet that with the slight changes a standard 1.6 GTI escort from the same era over here would give it a run for its money. Especially round the bends. driver of the cossie was a novice and messed up both starts revving the engine and getting caught out at the wrong rpm as soon as the lights went out, if the driver kept the revs at say 5-6000 rpm and dumped the clutch when the lights went out i think it would of been different result
