One thing you've got to remember about him choosing to help Vaatu when he saw the two fighting is that he didn't come from a world with Christianity's iconography, so the association of colors between good and evil is a wholly foreign concept here. Wan just saw two spirits fighting and helped the first one that asked.

Oh that’s actually an interesting idea. I know for a fact that regardless of upbringing we associate colours with different feelings, but I wonder how much that seeps into other things. Colours may not have anything to do with good vs evil as you say for someone like Wan. I know that at the very least he may have felt peace for blue and passion for red but otherwise all he had to go off was Vaatu’s word.

@@thecocoacouch As a small correction, people associate colours with random things, there is nothing inherent about colours and what they mean to people. Black, purple and lilac are connected to mourning in large parts of Europe, but white is in many Asian countries.
The associations between colours and how people feel when looking at them is cultural more than biological. Colours have an effect on mood for sure, but it's not as simple or universal as many people think.

This season really is not bad I just think the main issue is that they originally were only going to get 1 seasons then once that was developed they got green lit for s2 so they had to do more world building and try and develop the other characters more, and didn’t know if another season was coming so couldn’t originally have story lines over lapping in to the other so had to wrap them up , they just had to big of a 3:18 job for not enough episodes, Nickelodeon really fucked them over. Aangs story and co could to be planned over 3 books so they new the beginning and the finish result but with lok they didn’t have that luxury aswell as having issues with the animation studios , but overall it’s still good and it shows character growth, I love how it shows Korra falling back into old habits as that’s more realistic u don’t suddenly become perfect and u may fall back a bit but it’s literally only in the first 3 eps the rest she’s fine , also tenzins character dilemma was very interesting how the pressure of who he thinks he should be .

I watched everything so quickly that I didn't have time to really analyze everything, I was in awe with some of the ideas and the lore. Obviously, now that I have rewatched it a few times, I have picked up on quite a lot of writing and pacing flaws, but I personally still love this season more than the first one. The spirit world, the Avatar origin, and Tenzin's development as a brother, a father and a teacher... love it.

It’s mainly due to a certain moment later in the series. However it would have been way better if it actually focused more on the plot. I really dislike the Bolin acting stuff and the love triangle once again like in book 1

    • @isleofredemption
      @isleofredemption Месяц назад +6

I think it was unloved because the lore no longer matters- they killed The Avatar as a source of ancient wisdom and power, including the spirit of Aang who we were all still kind of invested in even though Korra was the new kid on the block. Felt like a slap in the face. Yes, it raises the stakes by not having the previous Avatars to look to for help and advice, but at the same time it lowers the stakes when Korra is more powerful than all of the other Avatars put together and just sort of wins.
If I'm being told through the actions of the writers that "ATLA was the story of The Avatar- LoK is killing that all off in favor of a story about this other girl" comes off like mean-spirited Fanfic.

    • @georgercop

the controversy of Wan's story is that for some people it seemingly contradicts how humans became benders. They believe that in ATLA humans gained bending by learning from the moon/dragons/bison/badgermoles, and that the Lion Turtles giving humans the power to bend goes against this.
      In actuality, it doesn't.
You have to think of it like bending being a sword. Any old Joe could buy a sword from a shopkeeper (gain bending from a Lion Turtle) and swing it about; however, to wield it effectively, you need a mentor to teach you (the moon/dragons/bison/badgermoles).

I wish Raava and Vaatu weren't the spirit embodiments of Good and Evil. It makes the Avatar feel both grand and generic.
Vaatu is locked away, yet evil is still prevalent in the worlds. Raava is supposed to be the spirit of good, yet all the good the Avatar does just causes more evil.
It would have been better if it was just an ancient spirit who fused with Wan. Not the embodiment of Good, just a really powerful spirit.

They’re likes and dislikes, but they are the same in their core. The same love of adventure and care for others. The same feistiness and determination. And the same drive to do better especially once they understand what is at stake. And it helps you to see the biggest reason the Avatar is so different to everyone else. They literally are bound to the Light Spirit, Raava. They are human and spirit. So good!

i am so glad for what you said about only comparing them in a way to highlight the unique features of each in a positive light. most of the critiques just boil down to either the person not liking having different characters, or pacing issues (which, from my understanding mostly are due to the network toying with how many seasons and episodes and whatnot there would be. like iirc season 1 was supposed to be standalone originally)
and they ignore the unique charm, good writing, and insane animation/score upgrades in LoK.
plus teenage drama (while not for everyone) is always fun- and there’s a lot more adult drama, too, which i appreciate more i think than a lot of shenanigans plot lines.

Season 2 is generally regarded as the worst of the four seasons of Korra, but it's still pretty good in my opinion, and I think it's home to the best two episodes in the entire series. Episodes 7 and 8 are a bit controversial, but I don't see any problems with them myself. The negative opinions toward the Avatar Wan flashback episodes usually feel that it contradicts existing canon about the origin of bending and the spirit world, but I see it as more of an interesting expansion on the existing lore. Some people claim that the concept of the lion turtle cities granting humans the ability to harness the elements throws away AtLA's stories of the original benders being the Moon and Ocean spirits, the Badgermoles, the Dragons, and the Sky Bison, but we still see this happening in Wan's training montage, with him receiving instruction in the Dancing Dragon form directly from a Dragon. The way I see it, AtLA gives us a vague concept of ancient humanity learning to bend from these natural creatures and spirits, while Korra expands on this lore by describing the difference between simply throwing fire at someone and channeling it through a series of precise, focused techniques. Humans may have received the ability to manipulate the elements from the Lion Turtles, but they were still taught how to bend them by the creatures with the natural instinct to do so. It's the difference between flailing at someone with a stick and mastering the art of swordsmanship.

I’m one that watched all 4 seasons of Korra while it was airing and came out with a largely negative experience. I’m a huge lover of the original series and I wanted so much to love Korra in the same way. I always felt like I loved Korra and Tenzin, but so many other characters just kinda fell flat and the story just failed to capture me. BUT, it has been QUITE some time since my first watch through. I don’t watch Korra super often so I’ve seen the series maybe 3 times over the last many years. As I’ve matured, I’ve tried to take a more nuanced and positive approach to the series. And what you said about comparing the two shows was something I was definitely guilty of. It’s great to be able to see Korra for what makes it unique and fun. There are still a lot of things about it that irritate me and that I’ll probably never quite come around to, but it’s great to now appreciate this origin story what it is. I enjoy all your reactions, but thanks for watching Avatar and Korra! It’s been a blast to watch along.

The creators actually intended to put Wan's story in ATLA but they couldn't find a way to naturally put it in as there was no real purpose for his presence and they had to focus on finishing up as well as dealing with Nickelodeon's meadeling plus limited run time.
Many were confused by the lion turtles being the ones to give them bending in Korra saying it was a retcon. After watching ATLA most everyone had the notion people learnt bending from the Dragons, Skybison, Bager Moals, the moon and ocean and that's the origin of bending but if u look back there is absolutely no evidence for this.
People observed and learnt the techniques from already experienced benders Dragons...etc. and applied those to their bending.
-Toph said she LEARNT earth bending by WATCHING the Bager Moles not that the gave her the ability, same with Airbenders and the Bisons.
-Yua told us that her ancestors WATCHED the moon push and pull the tides then applied the technique.
-Wan was the first to learn from the dragons and it IMPROVED his bending.
-Not to mention that the only time bending is mentioned to be given or we see bending being bestowed on someone in ATLA it was always associated with the LionTurtles. Their the ones we actually see give a bending ability in the O.G. that being giving Aang ability to Energy Bend.
So, for anyone and everyone ✨NO ITS NOT A RETCON✨

    2) I’m soo excited you reached Wans arc as the first Avatar!! I was blown away by it the first time I watched it. Fun fact - I recently started learning Chinese, and the word for 10.000 is actually pronounced VERY similarly to „wan“ as well

Raava and Vaatu get a LOT of hate for their introduction, but the way the other Avatar's encouraged Korra to connect to Raava means that each of them, at some point, learned from Wan the origins of the Avatar spirit. We also have these few things to consider:
    1. The Lion turtles, as we know, bend energy and by these episode we also know they protected the balance between humans and spirits. After they left, it is easy to assume people learned bending (and thus claimed their origin) from other creatures.
    2. While it is easy to characterize Raava as light and Vaatu as darkness (yin and yang), it is not so. Raava is balance and Vaatu chaos. By binding with Raava, the Avatar became keeper of the peace, bridging the Spirit and physical worlds and restraining the influence of chaos.
    3. To say this overwrote ATLA is shortsighted. Aang restored balance to an imbalanced world. He was given energy bending from the lion turtles, which we see them use. Just because our understanding changed doesn't mean the new understanding is wrong
    4. It is interesting that the sages of each element know of harmonic convergence and, by relation, the origin of the Avatar. And the sage used FIRE to detect the spiritual presence within Korra

the fire sages emphasize that "Fire is Life, not destruction", and yeah while Raava and Vaatu present themself ast light and darkness, they aren't shown as 'good' or 'evil' , as shown by Raava and Vaatu both underestimating Wan as a human, but Raava gets more character developement as she gets smaller and weaker, while Vaatu's pride and cunning only grows bigger with him.

    • @bch7905
      @bch7905 Месяц назад +1

Ok but point #2 is entirely contradicting because Raava literally says she is light and Vaatu is dark, and everyone regards Vaatu as evil, Vaatu acts as evil, etc. I think the criticism is valid especially when they are visual representations of yin-yang yet the narrative very clearly wants us to side with Raava because she is "good" and that is not at all what the concept of yin-yang is about. It'd be more forgiving if Raava was an unreliable narrator, but this isn't the case.
It's fine to like the story but people try to paint this as a nuanced backstory that makes sense of the world that comes to be when in reality it has weak relation to the Avatar world that we were introduced to in the first series (Korra never got a chance with spirits until this season) and even some side material and is only recognizable with the bit of Eastern mythology/history that they did decide to keep in.

honestly I always felt like the issues between Mako and Korra were mostly her fault. she made assumptions about Mako's intentions when he really was trying to help her, she couldn't communicate what she actually needed him to say or do for her, and it's understandable that he would get frustrated by her making him feel like a jerk or an idiot just for saying what she didn't want to hear. she was just being really immature at this point in their relationship. everyone always blames Mako because of the cheating stuff, but let's be real -- a 17 year old kid who's never really dated anyone before suddenly has two of the most gorgeous and powerful women in the world trying to date him? come onnn, I'd be confused as heck too lmao how do you even choose??? things are rocky for now, but I really like how it turns out in the end.

Conflict in Korra: Northern water tribe attempting to restore the southern tribe, southern don't like it, northern use force, civil war breaks out. Republic city refuses to get involved or take sides so there is talk of getting the fire nation involved to support the south. Big industries are capitalising on the war and even intentionally escalate it. etc etc

@@Celeborn93 In this case it was more derived from him saying during this episode that Korra conflicts are way more complex than ATLA, which does seem true on the surface level. It's only when you dig deeper that you see the politics that led to the fire nation truely believing that the world would be better off with them just ruling everything. When you look at Long Feng, the division around the earth kingdom, the rampant poverty in small towns and the lower ring of ba sing se and the sexism in the northern water tribe and compare it to the prosperity, internal equality and technology of the fire nation I can see why they would think everyone else is doing it wrong, but wiping everyone else out is probably not the solution. Besides, I'm under the impression that before Avatar Szeto they had a lot of these issues themselves...
So yeah, there is complexity to the "Fire nation bad" but that is a lot less funny as a comparison

It's interesting. I think these are both the best and worst episodes in season 2. As a contained story it's well done and I love the art style. Wan's a great guy. Buuutttt. It does kind of impose a very Western Christian Good vs Evil moral framework on what has, until this point, been a series based on East Asian, non-dualistic philosophy. Like, Raava and Vaatu are very Yin-Yange coded. Only instead of balance being harmony between the two it's Raava defeating Vaatu. I'm not a fan of that, personally. Still! Glad you're enjoying the series and love your reactions to it.

  • @Little-Dude

Idk, I think Mako trying to solve the case at his job was a lot different than him giving up Korra's plan. Korra was basically going to escalate the conflict into an all-out war. I know it was from a good place, but it was kinda wild ngl. I kinda hate that that whole setup because it makes Korra far more aggressive than I think she would be, and it turned Asami into a war profiteerer. Which I don't think is a good look for either of them. To be fair, when Mako is "on her side" in the South it was more about interpersonal conflicts with her father, uncle, Tenzin, etc. And the conflict hadn't escalated that much. It's a lot different when they make it back to Republic City. Mako is just trying to get to the truth instead of jumping to conclusions and being petty like everyone else was.
I think the breakup makes sense, tbh. But they do just make it messy all over again with that Mako-Asami kiss, which I don't think was needed at all.
