Great video, appreciate the honest take. Having also ridden the Varg I can tell you that the throttle mapping down low drastically changes as you up the horsepower. I would highly recommend bumping it up to 55-60hp even if you don't use it all (to be a fair comparison to the 250) just so it provides the bottom end that you're looking for. Also as others have said the Varg easily weighs 30 pounds heavier and thus will require more HP to get moving out of the corners. Obviously increasing the HP isn't going to do any favors to the range but it would be interesting to give it another go.

I don't think he was interested in finding out what the bike is capable of. He was also physically spent after the first 20 minute session. Keeping it underpowered and starting with not a full charge is just begging for trouble. Seems more like a purposeful hit piece. Disappointed if I'm honest, I'd expect better

he kept it at the exact same horsepower as the 250, whats different? how did he keep it underpowered? HP is the power of a bike, so changing it to 55-60hp would then give it an unfair advantage against a 250 as the stark would be powered as a 450, it doesnt even matter anyway, even with 40hp it ran out of charge quickly and would of ran out way before 19 minutes with more power.

Here you are, running your ignorant mouth for nothing but troll time. If you HAD ridden either one of those, you'd know what a sham this video is. for the stark to be efficient it needs to be in the middle of its rev range. having the power slightly higher to 48hp -52hp youll most probably get better range. the slightly higher power removes the power lag in 40hp mode and gives a better delivery

not true, motors don't have a "rev range" there will be a certain RPM that the motor will be marginally more efficient at, but unless the motor is spinning at that rpm constantly it doesn't matter. the motor will be changing speed constantly while being used so setting the power higher will ALWAYS result in the battery draining quicker. P=VI the battery voltage will be constant so the only way to increase power is to drag more current and kill the battery faster. its simple physics.

Battery life on them is an issue, and fast lads like you will 100% not last a full pro moto. Mine had an update a few weeks ago that sorted the power fade, apparently the battery thought it was overheating so limited power, so make sure yours is updated if its really bad. Secondly its a fair few kilos heavier than my 250 yam, so setting it to the around the same HP you're going to be down on power to weight. I guess you're not shifting etc, so maybe its fair, but I've found 50-55hp the best setting to make the bike feel good. Anything less and it does feel too slow out of turns like you said. Hopefully v2 Starks when they're out can last a full moto with no fade, but right now this is the best electric option we have.

You definitely should not feel like it has no low end power, thats where it absolutely dominates a conventional motor. I would say the power mapping probably needs some work, and dialed down that low it's super soft for beginner style riding.

Odd comment, the stark’s ability to change power modes and hp is a bit simpler than restricting a 450.
Plus, if you were to ride the stark in an MX2 class capping the horsepower is exactly what you would be doing.
Whether the power should have been maybe 50 or 55hp, to make it more comparative to compensate for weight is up for debate, as ultimately you wouldn’t give another combustion powered bike the same leniency for being ‘heavy’.
You can argue it either way all day long, regardless, the battery life is concerning and it couldn’t run a full length pro motocross race. Jake’s insight comes from years of professional racing at GP level, and is one of the few pro riders to give an unendorsed review on this thing from a pro perspective.

You'd also do a lot more riding to learn how to use it to advantage, not come off a bike you've ridden for years and just jump on and race. TBH this test makes no sense, I understand what you were trying to do but shaving hp off to compensate for shifting, that’s a benefit of the EV. Why would you turn the power down at all? Is the power to weight ratio the same? Imagine detuning a Ferrari to 70hp because you want to compare times against a Corolla…

Second one managed a 2 lap practice then a 12 min race. Had to miss race 2 cause it didn’t charge enough within the gap between races. Then out for last race. And before anyone says get a bigger generator. That completely goes against the purpose in the first place.

I disagree with the way you did your test, first of all you gave the Stark only 40hp,now most new stock 250s make around 43-44hp,it was hard to see if you had an aftermarket pipe the way your vid was done you mostly see the left side of the bike on the crf 250 ,also the Stark is heavier than the crf 250 by at least a good 25 pounds,at 40hp the Stark was at a hp disadvantage 3 to 4hp or maybe more if you had a high comp piston, cams, pipe it could be 6 or 7hp,for the battery life others have said around 20- 35 minutes at 55hp,but then again it depends on the track.

Until the battery is improved to have more life and be lighter it won't be a really viable race bike for pros. I think it may be extraordinary for novices, play riders, hare scramble and enduro riders who coast a lot and rarely use more than half throttle. If a pro mx rider can get 30-40 min from a charge I am sure my old man off road speed could get maybe 3 hrs from a single charge.

That's really articulate and hype-free rider feedback and there's no question that battery life on fast or sapping tracks is a big issue. But the lap time difference here feels very spurious and is a real outlier compared to most people's experience (who more or less instantly match their petrol-engined time), so for whatever reason I don't believe the HP figures were balanced in this test. I feel like the dashboard HP on the Stark is an overestimation.
A lot of owners seem to be gravitating towards 50hp (myself included, with 80-100% engine braking) which feels like a sweetspot for the bike, and gets rid of that limited, capped feel. Would love to see you try that and hear your thoughts. As a novice motocrosser, the Stark feels like an amazing training tool, with settable power way less intimidating than a petrol 450, but it still gives you the option of an adrenaline pump on the straights at the flick of a button. Anything above 60hp is just instant arm pump, with the full 80hp basically a holeshot mode.

Your track is a bit sandy but nothing compared to Lommel. I wonder what the Stark would be like in those conditions? I like this test and think it adds another view on electric bikes. The Stark does seem to divide people. The Marmite of MX. Would be great if you could carry on testing it. Maybe a weigh in of the 250f vs Stark would be good, different power outputs. Could even grad the track and ride one bike first then grade it again and try the other if that is possible. Great video keep it up 👍🏻

I like more 450 bikes, and when i tried the varg, 40hp, didn't liked it. 46 hp was ok, 50hp too much. So i think 48hp should work well.

    • @XCASTMedia
      @XCASTMedia 11 месяцев назад

Because if you wanted to race the stark in the smaller MX2 class you would have to restrict it and lock its output for the duration of a race day.
The stark has the luxury of being able to set its output accordingly to match the class that you would race it in, so when comparing it to an MX2 bike, it makes sense to set its horsepower to that of an MX2 bike…
Naturally the video was a ‘shoot-out’, but really it just draws attention to the pros and cons of the Stark in its current state.
Whether you agree with the way in which the test was conducted or not; there are still some obvious drawbacks, it’s rare that the first version of anything is spot on, so if I were stark I would take the feedback onboard and use it to help develop the bike further.

Plus why not try it at higher power?? You can adjust the settings for more bottom end but you didn't even try that.
And you are comparing these with a lot of practice on the 4-stroke but NO practice on the Varg? And you think that's a fair comparison?
PS. Stark Varg just took 1st place at Arenacross in Manchester so to say it's boring, slow, etc. (As you said) is not accurate at all.

Not really a fair test or comments. Firstly you came off warming yup and tiring yourself on a bike you know well, perhaps a day on the Varg, then a warm up and ride on it and you'd have seen different results. And you are getting a faster bike, retarding it, then comparing it to another bike. How about head to head with 60+ horsepower on the Varg Vs the 4fiddy. And they will in MX unless power is retarded excessively. But they probably will, anything to keep the petrol brand sponsors money coming in. But even then, I'm guessing they'l be competitive.
