We invited British engineers in the 19th century and laid a railroad. We also imported small small locomotives and passenger cars like match box from the UK. After that 150 years, the UK bought a high - speed train made by Hitachi, Japan. It is for granted that our bullet train runs in Japan. Hitachi runs in the UK, is the greatest pride. Ladies and gentlemen, Thank you for your guidance so far.
Some of the finest preserved steam action footage I've ever had the pleasure to observe. Well done. When I was a small boy, such sights were an everyday event and with my then small child inexperience I thought they would be around forever. Thanks to those that cared, many still are.
Yeah ? But unlike other countries we preserved our steam locos which now play a part in our tourism trade, where steam trains take passengers on daily trips around the country ! All countries have a heritage, whether it's cars, motorbikes, marine vessels or aviation etc etc. We just happen to take pride as the above comment states.
As a kid I was always interested in aircraft, still am. But having watched YT for years, I have found these rail beasts just so incredibly impressive. To be speeding and on the footplate must be one hell of an experience for any man. The last train must have been doing 70/80 mph! Nerves of steel needed! Many thanks for sharing your experiences.
As a fellow railway enthusiast from India who is more emotionally attached to diesel locomotives and these steams, this video provides me a lot of happiness. Will have to visit UK for these beauties sometime in the future!
I just think its Heaven to see these fine Machines roaring down the track at such high speed next to modern fast speed lines too.And the way your country has really kept them sparking clean and refurbished so beautifull. We in the usa take great care of ours, but you have the fastest steam locomotives around and thats what interest me.Thanks
The real problem is the American Railroads scrapped their high-speed steam before preservation groups could really get any traction. I'm sure a Milwaukee Road F7 or A class locomotive, or maybe a NYCRR J3-a would be stiff competition for a British streamliner. But we'll never know...
10:23-11:20 My most favourite part of the entire video! I love that low, rumbling noise of 2 steam locomotives roaring down the gradient but a steam loco speeding past a station at night and whistling is 10 times better, whether streamlined or not.
I'm living in Argentina, and in the past, the argentine railways were build for british enterprises. And, when i watch this movies, I almost see the past of my railroads. All the British infrastructure is present in the Argentine railways. I have many memories of them

Awesome shots bring back great lineside memories of my youth. Dodgy old track in some of the shots made the locos buck and rock. Great to see the fives giving their all.
The big GW 4-6-0s were bucking all over the place!!! No wonder the other three of the Big Four used Pacific power - the trailing trucks were a great asset... (Sorry for late reply BTW).
The 'joggled' front bogie design was to enable Collett to put the largest diameter inner cylinders into the design, which meant that the leading bogie axlebox had to be of an outside design. In their early days this bogie frames had an habit of misbehaving, too...
Great shots. Interesting to note just how many of those trains had a diesel on the rear, it seems an unfortunate fact of life that we now have to put up with the majority of "steam" specials with a snot-box at back.
struck2soon I wonder in what proportion of those the diseasel is actually pushing. Or is it being pulled, adding quite a bit to the weight of the train?
The diesel can't be there for braking purposes because if the brakes on the train were inadequate without it the train would not be allowed anywhere near a railway. The use of diesels seems a bit arbitrary. There have been plenty of cases where the steam loco has only just enough guts to keep going e.g. Hemerdon and Dainton West and no diesel in sight, thank God. It may be that the diseasel, snot-box, gronk is there simply for train-heating purposes.
More often than not the diesel is there in case of failure, it means that stock can be moved off the mainline as quickly as possible without incurring the massive fines for causing delays on the national network.
Nothing fills me with greater pride and nostalgia than seeing these beautiful engines still going strong. Doesn't it add considerable weight to have those diesels supporting at the back?
It's not that they were slow in operation. It's that they were slow out of operation, and prior to post-steam understandings of railway traction, lacked tractive effort compared to a locomotive that was powering all of its wheels like an electric or diesel-electric.
Plus you had to fire them up, gently, keep the boilers sound, make sure everything got lubricated, and so on. After "work" the engine had to get rid of its ashes, and the boiler cleaned of those small coal pieces (clag?) that wound up in the front of the boiler. A diesel you can just basically fire up and go, an electric is even simpler: All you need is enough air pressure for the brakes, and away you go. But got to give it to the Britishers for their love of their old steamers, in such magnificent shape! I dare not think of the amount of man-hours spent to get them to where they are now! :D

The Tornado, a modern monster.
There are still other modern-built steam locos today.
