Imagine being casted as a special guest on a TV show and then realizing it's Police Squad
And rex hamilton as abraham lincoln!
They took it in stride.
And I can top that: one of the segments filmed was with John Belushi as the "special guest star" (he is chained up and thrown in the river.) Belushi died before the episode aired and his scene was replaced. I think I saw it once somewhere.
It'd be an honor! They should do a remake and have my son and his friends play the cast!
Could you imagine that phone call by your agent or manager?
"Hey, we got a call about you being a special guest star on a TV show!"
"What's the show? Dallas? Magnum pi? Dynasty? Facts of life?!!!"
"No. Police squad."
"I'll pass. You're fired by the way." *click*
The voice over is so classic 70's and the conviction in which he gives the episode title wrong is gold
Was the DEATH KNELL for that particular genre of TV.
The guy doing the voice over is the same guy as in all of the Quinn Martin shows.
Like Airplane! was a tribute to the movie Zero Hour, Police Squad was a tribute to M Squad.
@@Bram25 And Police Squad would evolve into the more successful Naked Gun film series also from Paramount
The legendary voice over guy is Hank Simms
I love the Shatner intro. His over the top sense of drama is perfect!
And he doesn't get shot to death. He escapes his first death attempt on him.
and He knew who did it!
See what you did there.
Alan Norths segment is just so damn funny. Pure chaos everywhere you look. Bullets flying everywhere. Mom throwing her baby on the floor. One guy screaming and on fire. People jumping out of windows, and you just can't help but laugh because of how over the top it is.
Never noticed the baby bit until you pointed it out. And Alan North just calmly returns fire.
It's an all-time classic. Imitated dozens of times.
Even the WWF had a similar, insane commercial, during the attitude era!
Even if you're not a wrestling fan, you'll still get a kick out of it!
Also, The Rock looks like he's twelve. Lol
Cheers from Canada
Oh my lord I never noticed the baby before I am SCREAMING
One of Rex Hamilton's greatest performances
If someone asked me to pick the top ten episodes of this show, it would be impossible.
It really would be
I see what u did there
Because there were only six episodes.
Rex Hamilton's only role in IMDB.
What about "My Fair Lady" and "Love At First Bite"?
@@marywealth6475 That's Rex Harrison & George Hamilton respectively.
@@fuzzcous
Correct. Very good.
Nailed it!
They were also in "A Hard Day's Night" together.
the show was truly ahead of it's time
Shame it was cancelled for being too funny I wish it got like 20 seasons
*its
Don’t abuse apostrophes.

...Yup, that's Shatner. He spent his *entire life* preparing for Kirk's death scene.
Force choked!
My favorite part of the intro is when Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln shoots John Wilkes Booth back. 🤣
Truly a memorable series. I saw the original series on TV and never understood why it was abruptly canceled. The first one had me fooled, I waited the entire half hour for Lorne Greene to come on.
And Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln! And that was the man’s real name!
Why would Abraham Lincoln not use his real name?
They should've gotten Abraham Lincoln to play Rex Hamilton.
@@RandomAmerican3000😳...😂🤭😄
Greatest Abraham Lincoln's.
1. Rex Hamilton
2.Abraham Lincoln
3. Daniel Day Lewis
4. Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter
Thumbs down for not including Robert V. Barron from "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure."
How ‘bout Arnold Jackson on the episode of ‘diffrent strokes???
Just to drive my son nuts I'd always say at least Abe returned fire my son never got the joke
Milhouse Vanhouten did a pretty good job in that school play
Utter genius to kill off the special guest star in the opening credits! So funny! As much as miss Lorne Greene I roar with laughter every time I see him rolling out of that car with a knife poking out of his chest. Conrad too but Greene did it better.
Florence Henderson gets me every time. This show was hilarious
@@rlove07 Her and Georg Stanford Brown got it the worst. Getting a safe dropped on you is one thing, but they capped the hell out of Mrs. Brady.
@@CinemaBiohazard I liked that he was wearing his uniform from The Rookies.
Props to Goulet in my book. He kept his cool and refused to show them fear.
I feel that's why the resurrected him to be Hapsburg in Naked Gun 2 1/2.
Great intro for a spoof of TV detective/cop shows. The "In Color" ID pokes fun of the 1965 ABC TV "In Color" bumpers, the show was filmed in 1982, but look likes it was set in 1965 with the stylized police cars, the theme music was a take-off of Count Basie's "M-Squad" theme, the special guest stars all get rubbed out before the episodes even begun, and the announcer always gets the titles incorrect. Classic!
If someone asked me to pick the top ten episodes of every sitcom I've ever watched, the top 6 would be this show!
John Belushi reportedly filmed a "Special Guest Star" appearance about 2 weeks before his death. The clip supposedly shows him at the bottom of a swimming pool, weighted down with a cement block and chains. Robert K. Weiss who produced THE BLUES BROTHERS also produced the SQUAD series and NAKED GUN movies. The book WIRED claims Belushi suggested he be "an overdose victim". Chilling (if true) The footage is believed to have been destroyed.
Wow!
One of the funniest comedy series ever, and one of the most short-lived.
Robert Goulet goes from being a special guest star and dying in the TV show to being a villain and dying in one of the movies.
When you talk about the best theme songs ever, this one has to be in the running.
2:11 - Robert Goulet would be the main villain in the second Naked Gun movie.
3:06 - Bill Shatner's pose after he returns fire is just comedic platinum!!!
It was so perfect!!! Such a pity the world was not ready for it and only 6 episodes were released...
But they followed it up with "Airplane".
@@bozhijak
Airplane?.....What is it?
It's a vehicle designed for flying that has wings and one or more engines.....
The woman behind the desk just casually throws away the baby when shit brakes loose. No kidding :')
All these years of watching it I never noticed that. I was too busy laughing at random guy on fire.
Didn't even realize she was holding a baby.. LOL
It's going to land on it's head of course too. Ironically enough, that happened to me, and it was Momsie that did it. I would probably hear her bring that up probably every five years.
Lincoln returning fire with a Saturday night special...
Wow! So, Robert Goulet was part of The Naked Gun series from the very beginning. That's awesome.
And Florence Henderson made an appearance in the third film.
Briefly...
He was the bad Guy in the second film.
Bet it was probably Elvis's favorite scene that he played over and over lol
I always get a good laugh out of the Lincon bit, like lookout, Lincon's Packing Heat! lol
I remember when this came out in the early 80's. There was one opening missing. John Belushi. Shortly after filming the opening John Belushi died. I think that's when they did the one with Bill conrad as a replacement.
Too bad they didn't include that one
John died the day after Police Squad! premiered. I guess they didn't want to use his clip because of his death. That's why they used William Conrad, who dies the same way Lorne Greene died.
This show was "must see TV" for me when it first aired, and I remember Belushi's corpse rolling out of the car, just like Green & Conrad.
@@ks4isuNo you don't.
“Be sure to tune in next week for another exciting story from the files of POLICE SQUAD!”
They had originally shot a scene at the end with John Belushi, but of course they scrapped it when he died, and replaced him with William Conrad. I would love to see the lost Belushi ending.
Interesting then that the voiceover calls the episode "dead men don't laugh"
Tonight’s Episode: The Writer’s Barely-Disguised Fetish
I have watched these dozens of times and only now noticed the first sight gag - the police car, with siren howling and lights blazing, turns into an ordinary civilian car when Leslie Nielsen emerges from it!
The best special guest star, by far, was Florence Henderson! Singing "Put on a happy face" and getting shot in the kitchen. Perfect!
Part of the joke was that she was doing Wesson Oil commercials at the same time - talking about how great her fried chicken was.
This is my favorite as well -something about her looking so happy and then getting machine-gunned does it for me...😀
@@BigDave4600 It's actually bittersweet, because you wish that would happen to all those goons that are on commercials and smile as though their stupid product made them eternally happy.
And that kick at the end. Priceless!
And she made a cameo in The Naked Gun 33 1/3.
Every Quinn Martin tropes wrapped in this classic series. Six episodes worth repeat viewing
Gaddafi: Hey, who are you?
Drebin: I'm Lt. Frank Drebin, Police Squad. And don't ever let me catch you guys in America!
That was the Ayatollah Khomenei, not Gaddafi.
I was pretty sure it was Gaddafi since Khomeini was knocked out by Drebin
I don’t know who does the Voiceover for this, but he is an absolute legend. This was 1982 but he has those early 60s TV announcer pipes and speaking cadence down. Especially how he says “in color!”
The man's name was Hank Simms. He was chisen for his distinctive narration styles. I thought at first it was Bob Holt, the Control voice from The Outer Limits as well as the voice from the tape ("this message will self-destruct") from Mission:Impossible.
A piece of trivia for you - Robert Goulet later appeared in The Naked Gun 2 1/2 The Smell Of Fear.
Who?
Here's another: Georg Standford Brown directed the kidnapping episode.
The way he refuses the blindfold
Leslie Nielsen is of course unparalleled as the serious actor who wound up having a real talent for comedy, but William Shatner does a great job of it, too!
Only Edgar Wright can remake the series.
If you'll notice, the order is in the taping schedule, not the way they aired it originally.
I remember seeing the intro to
POLICE SQUAD!
when it first came on TV and I never laughed so hard in my life and still do! 😂
How to tell if a person is too uptight or depressed in life? Have them watch a Naked Gun movie or Police Squad episode to see their reactions or look for their unaware, lost comments on RUclips. There's more comedy in brief opening credits of the Naked Gun show than most other supposed comedy media, I believe.
Nobody gonna talk about how William Shatner survived a gunfight but choked on a glass of wine?
The way he's pointing I think it was poisoned.
I had all 6 episodes on VHS tape back in the 80’s. Best tv show ever!
Pity we never got a full season of this one. Florence Henderson's special guest appearance is my favorite. Mrs. Brady gets gunned down in the kitchen and I'm laughing at it.
I think Florence Henderson's is the funniest for how random it is.
I’m just to say that this shit is amazing and should’ve never been canceled
So Lorne Greene (0:33) and William Conrad (4:37) bookend the series, going out in the same manner from the same car.
“POLICE SQUAD! IN COLOR.
Starring Leslie Nielsen.
Also Starring Alan North.
And Rex Hamilton as Abraham Lincoln.
William Shatner by a mile - its hysterical. Btw is Sally Dekker still in the Penitentiary??😳
I love how he looks so smug after the shooting only to be poisoned
Along with Dutch Schultz, etc!
Robert Goulet... the only guest star (killed immediately) who did guest star in the Naked Gun movies!
Shatners intro is perfect, the way he instantly returns to his meal after shooting back.
Did you know that Leslie Neilsen was in two episodes of Columbo, one of which he played the murder victim who dies in the first 10 minutes?
Holy shit I forgot they kill Carol Brady in the intro lol.
The show has so ahead of it's time!
Police Squad 2022 in 720p!
Starring Jeff Goldblum
Also Starring Charlie Sheen
And Guest Star Robert Downey Jr. (Dies)
Today's episode THE WITNESS OF DEATH "My wife left me!"
I can’t help but notice how the guy on fire’s screaming gets increasingly more quiet
I have heard John Belushi was going to guest as a underwater corpse with cement shoes, but he died and they did not do it 😞
I love this show.. nothing compares...
Shouldn’t given Alan North aka Ed a moustache or something then he’d be like Watson 😂 I mean I’d go for that look 😂
Peter Lupus took some sheet rock on the head!! 😂😂👍
I think it is time to vote on the best "guest star victim". For me it is Shatner, with Greene a close second. Your views?
Benoit Pellet robert goulet and he starred in NG 2 1/2
Its definitely Shatner... ahaha
Shatner 1, Florence Hamilton 2
Florence Henderson #1, William Shatner #2, William Conrad #3 (he was the only one who starred in a Quinn Martin show, which the opening spoofed.
Shatner, Goulet, Florence Henderson, Georg Stanford Brown, William Conrad, and Lorne Greene in that order although the last two are pretty much tied. Conrad gets it on facial expression.
Man by the time the last one was over, you start to go a little nuts with that music for 4 minutes straight LOL
2:29, I've seen that episode intro on a 1992 Dutch subtitled VHS release of that show. And It's so funny before the episode even starts!
OMG!! Poor Florence Henderson! (3:52)
🤣🤣😱😂😂
3:53 - No! Not Mrs. Brady!
Half of them are Canadian.
Coincidence? I think not...
So was Nielsen.
Leslie Nielsen actually trained at the Lorne Greene School of Broadcasting in Toronto.
omg, this is the best. Big big shame that this serie had just 6 parts.
I wish they got like 19 seasons
@@the_criminal_mastermind, surely you can’t be serious?
@@Keithustus I am serious and don't call me Shirley
I dont know why this show only lasted six episodes but at the same time was able to spin off a successful film series. The show was just as funny and campy as the films.
Three letters: A B C.
The problem was you had to watch the show to catch all the jokes. As a film, you have to watch it, not just do other things while it is playing.
@@sha11235my 10yo ass was right in front of the old Zenith console for every second this show was on.
Crazy series.
It really sucks that two of the greatest tv shows of all time didn't make it past a dozen episodes!
The other one I'm referring to is Faulty Towers.
I was never the biggest Monty Python fan but John Cleese had a perfect cast and they made comedy gold!
Just don't mention the war! I might have slipped up once but I think I got away with it :)
Cheers from Canada
Just a summer replacement.
I distinctly remember this airing during winter (early 1982). @@rockvilleraven
Tonight's episode:
the writer's barely-disguised fetish.
This was such a hilarious show! Today, Angie Trifecta is an attempted revamp of this comedy styling. I don’t think it’s working...
It almost feels like the fact there only 6 episodes feels like a joke on its own lol
Theme song is on point.
Georg Stanford Brown’s credit is my favorite, it’s just so stupid
And rex hamilton as abraham lincoln .LOL!!!!
Wish they could somehow bring back this show and keep the original feel.
Writers too dumb now, making cookie-cutter episodes with resolutions 4 minutes before the end then a mini cliffhanger with 1-2 minutes remaining of every episode.
@@Keithustus you mean like how they were doing this in the 60s and 70s with this show directly parodying those decisions?
Funny series cool!!!
lmfao florence henderson
If you ask me, I'm just glad it's all in color.
Robert Goulet later played the villain, in Naked Gun 2 and a Half
The Grand Tour totally copied this. Last season they had this segment where famous guest would arrive and die before coming to studio.
They copied it but forgot to make it funny
@@JesusBehindtheWheel you can blame that on BBC screwing over them until season 2 when amazon got the word
I have this theme in my Spotify play list
Here's the real irony: With all the spoofing of Quinn Martin-produced shows that Police Squad specialized in, it's ironic that Leslie Nielsen actually starred in one of QM's very early works. It was a series called "The New Breed".
R.I.P. Leslie Nielsen!
John Belushi's (guest star) opening was replaced with the Florence Henderson open...
Why does this only have 6 episodes rip police squad yet I was born like a few decades too late D:
It was a summer replacement. But they didn't advertise it much. I think it was too funny for it's own good.
It was about 20 years ahead of its time - the specific timeframe depends on which comedy sitcom that did not have a laugh track you think was the first to really take off
The OG UK Office
Arrested Development
The US Office

Trivia fact, the William Conrad opening was originally shot with John Belushi dumped in the water with cements shoes. He died so they cut it.
I don't see why they couldn't do it as a tribute to his memory.
1:27 when the black guy dies before the show begins
On the William Shatner intro his "girlfriend" starts falling down before the shooting starts...
This show was so funny
Can anyone upload another version of the intro of Police Squad with the CBS StereoSound Where Available logo when reruns originally aired on CBS during the summer to early fall in 1991 during the theatrical run of the 1991 Paramount Pictures movie The Naked Gun: From the Files of the Police Squad!?
Stewie Griffin on his trike
Grey skies are gonna clear uuuup...put on a happy faAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!
My favorite Special Guest Star is Florence Henderson , although they were all good. Does anyone know if they used the same announcer as Quinn Martin (whose openings they spoofed beautifully)? The funniest show of all times. Too bad there were only six episodes.
Yeah its the same one.
Hank Simms
@@simonbyrd6518 I think he did all the Quinn Martin things, including The Invaders, The FBI, and The Fugitive (was Route 66 QM?).
@@charles2241 I don’t think so. It didn’t air in “acts” or have an “epilogue”.

It's a Mad Magazine-style spoof of Lee Marvin's M Squad.
