    Geophysicist and surfer here who lives at the beach on the northern Oregon coast. While this may have occurred _during_ a King Tide, it has nothing to do with it. This is properly called an _infragravity wave_ (see Wikipedia), also known as _surf beat._ They are almost always present, but unless the open ocean swell that day is large, we don't notice it. You can see the large surf in the background. Those distant waves, which likely have a period around 10-15 seconds, set up an additional dynamic along the coast -- a sloshing in and out -- that occurs between every 1-5 minutes. So when the water recedes, it can be for a fairly long time, which lulls people into thinking the "coast is clear". But then a few minutes later it sloshes back in and can be tremendously powerful and dangerous, and usually catch people off guard. No wonder infragravity waves are what everyone calls _sneaker waves._ So, you were right the first time!

    • @k80_
      @k80_ 2 месяца назад

      1-5 minutes… are these waves the reason why some surface wave “sets” are stronger/ bigger than others? Or is “that was a weak set” just a colloquialism for not getting any waves by SoCal surfer types growing up?

    • @xyzct
      @xyzct 2 месяца назад

      @@k80_, infragravity waves are distinct. In contrast, ocean waves of different wavelengths - which travel at different speeds - self organizing into groups or sets. The group velocity of ocean waves is the speed at which the wave's envelope, or modulation, propagates through space. The modulated groups/sets can vary in size from set to set.

    As a rule, the tide does not come in this abruptly. I think this is an exceptional wave that presumably came ashore during a king tide.

    • @shea-theriseofdaun2114
      @shea-theriseofdaun2114  3 года назад +7

      Yeah, I've had people tell me that. I've also had people tell me that it could have been a sneaker wave on top of the king tide because the tides weren't coming quite that far in every single time... I don't know, but either way I'm going to be more cautious when the tides are like that. It was enough water it could have knocked me on my butt and probably been bad.... so anyway thanks for the comment! Blessings.

    King tides come in just like any other tide -- gradually. King tides just come in a little faster and more persistently than normal tides. They do not come in all at once. Those waves were much bigger than previous waves. They were sneakers on a king tide.
