i remember seeing this as a kid on tv (i think on channel 9 out of ny). the ending freaked the hell out of me and started me on years worth of nuclear war based nightmares.
Toho has long been reluctant to put out this movie for release anywhere in the world, because of the controversy the film was met with in Japan during its theatrical release with anti-nuclear activists regarding scenes with mutants, which they felt offended survivors of chemical and nuclear attacks. Even a foreign release outside Japan, they feel, would risk bootlegs being reverse imported back to Japan. The licensing rights to this American version put out by UPA, Last Days Of Planet Earth, was not renewed when UPA was bought by Classic Media and has now reverted back to Toho.
It was never released officially on DVD or video because when the film came out in Japan, the scenes featuring radiation-mutated humans caused controversy with an anti-nuclear activist group who felt the scenes were offensive to the survivors of the Hiroshima & Nagasaki bombings. The studio Toho has been reluctant to put it out on home video anywhere in the world ever since to this day because of the controversy that came out of the film's theatrical release in Japan.
Oh man - I saw this on TV as a kid and the ending with the mutants is all I remember, but I remember it VIVIDLY. Spent ages trying to find out the title!
@GueiGirl, the Hong Kong English dub with the Danish subs is NOT the uncut version. The original Japanese version runs 114 minutes and was never dubbed into English. The complete version is in all sincerity the best way to see the film as it has a sincere message and many plot points and characterization that is missing in the English language versions.
I have the uncut Hong Kong english dub with Danish fan subtitles. I say it's one of the strangest films I have ever seen. It's like a trainwreck, but it makes you beg for more at the same time.
i saw this. some of the things they show in this are not out of the question. for example,. if we can have a hole in the ozone layer, or red ocean surfaces, then a red & reflective sky due to pollution might be possible.
Saw this film years ago it was kind of ridiculous but still fun to watch. Most scenes just didn't make sense yet still held my interest maybe cause it was so screwed up it was just to weird not to watch. Always wondered why it never came out on DVD.

Movies like this used to scare me when I was a kid.

Toho produced that cut, so it’s how they themselves wanted to release it outside of Japan.
